Everything thing was as described! I wish the fishing was better, however in the summer its always hit or miss. Rob the caretaker was great!

We had an excellent time. Perfect setup for a family of 4. Just a short ride to town and Grand Ely Lodge made it a perfect balance of seclusion, while still being able to enjoy a dinner out.
We will be back!

Wonderful location and accommodations unfortunately the lake was about 5 foot higher than normal

The cabin is situated with no other cabins in view. Beautifully decorated Minnesota Cabin thats extremely functional. The boat was perfect for this lake even with high winds you can easily get around. The wildlife on the island made the trip. We cant wait to come back.

Very nice cabin and super location. Got lucky with the Northern lights and beautiful weather. Bed is comphy.
It's as described with being "off grid" but it certainly isn't roughing it. Its luxury camping for sure. Kitchen is well equipped and we did most meals over a week on site.
Lake had significant algae while we were there. Miners lake close by was great for a dip.

My husband and I booked over Labor Day weekend through the week. The cabin and little island were just perfect! I love the way Neil has carved out little areas to capture all the beauty surrounding you in Shagawa. The hammock area for reading or napping! The sunset sitting spot (perfect to share some wine and star gaze)! The fire pit area to host a small gathering of family to toast marshmallows and eat chili!! Perfection! The cabin is well appointed and cozy. We were very comfortable thru some wild weather and temperature swings! The provided boat allowed us easy access to Ely and all the fun there too! Couldn’t be more pleased! Also, caretakers Rob and Lee were friendly, responsive to questions and super helpful. FIVE sparkly stars!! Thank you!!

The property is exactly as described. We were looking for a boundary waters "light" experience as we are getting a little older and struggle with the full wilderness adventure. This cabin fit the bill perfectly.
We enjoyed how fully stocked and appropriated the cabin was for being off the grid. We were able to cook numerous delicious meals. There was plenty of water, TP, paper towels, bedding and towels.
We used the provided boat daily as we went fishing and into Ely for a fun day. We hooked up the trolling motor to help maneuver the boat while fishing.
Overall, it was a very relaxing week on Loon Island. If you are looking for an off the grid experience, this place is for you. But you can still turn on the lights for a while and make some toast!

My family and I had an absolute blast! We stayed for 4 nights. The cabin is quaint and cozy and the electricity is also nice for modern conveniences when you have kids. We had one cold rainy day so it was nice to head in and explore Ely and went to the Bear Museum.

We hopefully can get back someday.

The cabin is outfitted with everything you need and the boat is perfect for the lake.
Thanks again! And we’ll be back for sure.

We really enjoyed our time on Loon Island. The cabin was spectacular as was the quality of our stay. We enjoyed fishing with the provided motorboat and enjoyed a few walleye dinners. We left feeling restored and reset. Thank you!

Great off grid way to enjoy the outdoors of ELY
Great vacation with great fishing in the boundary waters (we had 3 amazing fishing days with Mike Stark with Ely fishing co). Only thing that could be a touch better would be a slightly bigger motor boat (was a bit small when all 4 of us were in it). Great host

Magical Experience!
Just had the most amazing week in Ely! We came for a Daddy Daughter Wilderness trip and wanted to have an experience that was unique yet comfortable for us. Our stay on Loon Island checked all the boxes and more. Prior to the trip our amazing hosts Neil and Dave, the caretaker, were attentive and exceptionally informative which took so much stress out of planning. They really thought of everything! The cabin is such a gem, what sold me was the comfort of a building but the remoteness of being on the island (although we were only a short 10 minute boat ride from shore). The accommodations were top notch and we slept better than we have in at least weeks! Despite the lack of running water (being on an island of course) Dave and Neil provided everything we needed for drinking, doing dishes and even taking a pretty good shower! We were able to cook most of our meals over the campfire and made some meals inside on the stove as well.
The island was a little paradise, we were there early enough in the season to miss the bugs and the crowds and we enjoyed watching all of the birds on the island. And of course, hearing the loons at night!
Overall, we had a fun and truly magical week of memories and a big part of that was our stay on Loon Island. I cannot recommend this place enough or the hospitality and knowledge of Neil and Dave. Next time we're up in Ely (which I hope is soon) we're definitely staying at Loon Island again!

Second excellent trip!
Guys trip this time. Last time was my wife and I. Cabin was still beautiful and has everything you need. The new motor on the boat and the outhouse were a great addition. After just canoeing the boundary waters it is really convenient to run into town if need be.
We changed our dates to add a day on each end and Neil and Dave were very accommodating.
Dave was right on time to take us back and forth and is very helpful with everything.
We look forward to returning again next year!

My husband and I recently got married and wanted a few days to relax, have little human contact, and spend some time outdoors. And this property absolutely delivered.Dave, the caretaker, was super easy to contact and always answered quickly whenever we reached out with questions before our stay. He helped load and unload all of our things as well, which was unnecessary but much appreciated. There was plenty of water provided for our 3 night stay. And even though it was cloudy, we had no issues with using the solar power to charge phones and to have the lights on for a few hours at night. The linens were clean, and the property was well kept. Our only complaint is that the fishing was better around the lake, but we heard everyone was having a hard time so we just enjoyed dinner at the Grand Ely Lodge one night instead of fish. If you’re looking for a place to disconnect, drink coffee in nature (while being close to civilization) and relax. Then this is your place. Definitely going to come back someday.

Great getaway
The cabin is absolutely adorable and well appointed. The location is the best of both worlds - privacy while on the island but within close proximity of town. Also, Dave the caretaker is a gem! Already thinking about next time....

The definition of off the grid ( but you still have cell service!)
Everyone should experience island privacy, peace and complete quietness once in their lifetime!

Peaceful
Everything was great, Dave the caretaker was very nice and helpful. The boat was easy to manage. Unfortunately the kids got bored quickly which necessitated trips to town which was fine with me. Lovely cabin.

Refreshing
The stay on the island is slow & refreshing. Amazing way to take a step away from busy life and just relax. The amenities were fabulous - a great option that falls between the comfort of home & packing all the essentials for tent camping.

We loved our stay at Loon Island! It is like having your private slice of heaven. My husband and I relaxed to bird song, Loons and we heard wolf at night. Loved having the boat to go for rides daily. Cabin is so clean! Dave the caretaker makes you feel so comfortable and he lets you know he is there for you! A great unique experience.... one my husband and I will not forget! Look forward to going back! I miss it already❤️

reset and refocus
I really enjoyed my stay here. I didn't leave the island, just read a book, sat on the dock, listened to the trees and water, watched the loons, admired the big trees and the flitting birds and the sweet cabin, then rested. Thanks to everyone and everything that has made this little gem possible.

A scenic and rustic retreat
A beautiful small cabin, with a complete sense of isolation and privacy. The island itself is quite small but very quiet and peaceful, perfect for couples. The cabin is well built and exceptionally clean. The lack of running water will be a challenge for some, but containers of both fresh water (for drinking/cooking) and rainwater are provided by the host. Solar power, propane fridge and stove all worked great (there is no oven). Books and board games are provided too, to keep you occupied in the event of cold or wet weather. Both Neil and Dave were super responsive to our needs and questions.

An island off the coast of Ely!
The escape to Loon Island was the best getaway I think I've ever had, and it was truly a slice of heaven. The cabin, the furnishings and the extras are fabulous. The caretaker is the perfect guy for the job. I cannot wait to return...thank you for making this beautiful escape available for others to enjoy! I was rejuvenated after only 2 1/2 days there.

Loon Island
We had a magical stay. The cabin was beautiful, we caught fish and saw a Bald Eagle fly over a Loon right in front of the dock!

Sweet little spot
What a glorious location! Cabin beautifully appointed, with few lapses. Dave, the manager, was not-to-be-outdone in his helpfulness. We were three adults and we found the cabin's small footprint adequate, even when we were rained in. We hiked and canoed lakes and trails nearby, and grilled in the rain. We'll be back.
We were unable to plan and pack well, though, as the info online were not at all useful. We needed details: pictures/lists of pots and pans, dishes (stemware!), PFD's, bedding and lighting, etc. The worst lapses were: the canoe was not seaworthy (we happily accepted the offer of the manager's canoe, throw cushion and paddles), and there was a complete lack of lighting to help us find the dock in the black of night when we returned from dinner on land.
We regard the glitches in this rental as fixable given the quality of the its construction, its ecological ethos, and the stellar choice made in hiring Dave and Sue.

Great place for a get away
Just the right amount of adventure for us. The property was awesome. Of course we had great weather but was a fantastic trip for us. The house was in great shape and had all the amenities we needed. Thanks to Dave for all his help!
