Dyer's Cottage offers singles, couples or small families something really special. What makes it really unusual is the family history of the cottage which has been occupied by the owners family for 250 years but possibly longer. Originally a farmhouse, it was subdivided during the late 18c or early 19c into cottages for Master Dyers, hence its name.
The spacious 1 bedroom accommodation, with super king size zip and link bed (or 2 twins) is fabulous with lots of character features like exposed beams, a mullioned window dating from 1650 and a superb fireplace with gas fire which looks like a woodburner but provides instant clean heat. It was sympathetically renovated in 2015 to create a delightful place to relax, maintaining all the character features yet providing an extremely high standard of comfort and style. Unusual for a cottage, the rooms are spacious and the ceilings are high so tall people are well suited though do be aware that a couple of doors are on the small side.
The spacious living room has a beautiful Yorkshire stone fireplace with a gas fired stove. The leather sofa seats 3 but also extends into a sofabed with a proper base and mattress for an extra guest. Watch the SMART 50" tv with freeview channels or enjoy the free fast WiFi available all over the cottage. Dine at an antique dining table overlooking the sunny garden with a view across to Norland Moor.
Taking pride of place in the bedroom is the super king Hypnos bed which is so comfortable and can be configured as 2 twins if required. The mood lighting, restored Victorian cast iron feature fireplace and old original gas light ooze character. Relish the moorland view from the bedroom window which can be enjoyed from bed too. The mood lighting, restored Victorian cast iron feature fireplace and old original gas light ooze character.
The contemporary bathroom has pale grey porcelain wall and floor tiles and a long bath which widens at one end to have a shower with a glass screen. The digital Aqualisa shower is powerful and there is a hand held shower attachment too. The gas central heating boiler and the washer/dryer are hidden in modern white units.
The kitchen is fully equipped with an electric oven, electric ceramic hob, fridge with separate freezer section, microwave, small dishwasher, Nespresso Dulce Gusto coffee maker, toaster, kettle and lots of cooking equipment.
Come and stay here to indulge yourselves in your own personal and private space. Chill in the sunny, secluded garden or enjoy a Spa day nearby to ease away the stresses of modern day life. Then discover Yorkshire hospitality by enjoying a meal out at one of the many excellent dining opportunities in the area. There's even an award winning CAMRA pub, also listed in the Good Beer Guide, which serves good value homecooked food as one of our neighbours.
There’s so much history around us as the cottage is in the Wainhouse area of Halifax and we are actually part of the guided heritage walk called the Wainhouse Trail which takes place a few times a year but if you miss it, we have a copy you can follow on your own. Or you may be into outdoor pursuits and canals. Walking, cycling and golf are very popular and bikes can be rented locally. Halifax West End Golf Club is just a couple of miles away and welcomes visitors except on Saturday mornings.
The cottage is an ideal base for 1/3 people (plus baby) if you are a romantic, interested in history or an outdoor or canal enthusiast who wishes to explore the walking or cycling trails of the West Yorkshire/Lancashire border area of the South Pennines, Bronte Country or the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is also close to the amazing art and music culture found in the renovated textile mills, alongside bars and restaurants and is easily accessible to Leeds, York and Manchester. Public transport is excellent. Halifax is a great base but also is a fabulous tourist destination of its own. The 19c town centre and industrial architecture rivals that of Manchester but the must see destination is the magnificent Grade 1 listed Piece Hall. Built in 1770 for handloom cottage weavers to sell their pieces of worsted cloth on a Saturday, it is an amazing double storey building arranged around a huge square. After a long restoration, it re-opened in 2017 as a vibrant shopping, cultural and entertainment centre. Housing individual shops, art galleries, bars, restaurants and cafes, as well as a modern museum and library, it regularly hosts cultural events and is now the number one tourist destination attracting visitors from around the world due to its uniqueness. Close by is Halifax Industrial Museum and Halifax Minster, the parish church of St John the Baptist holding the body of Anne Lister.
Calderdale is now the latest media destination as it has featured in many recent tv series including “Last Tango in Halifax”, “Happy Valley”, and the latest Sally Wainwright drama "Gentleman Jack". This follows the real life of a local lady Anne Lister, who lived at the lovely Tudor mansion Shibden Hall in the early 19c. Come and see the filming locations for yourself!
If you have children, don’t forget to visit Eureka! which is the National Interactive Children’s Museum for children aged 1 to 12. PB's play zone is popular for children up to 6 years too. Please note that the structure of such an old building does not allow Dyer’s Cottage to be able to provide safety features such as stair gates or fireguards etc so if you bring young people, it is at your own risk.
Dyer’s Cottage Halifax Yorkshire is listed on a few sites where both you and us pay a fee. We also support book direct where our pricing structure is different. Search and find us.
A few points to be aware of.
* Stairs (be aware that the top one is higher) between the 2 downstairs rooms lead to a spacious landing with a window and a desk. Please note that it is not possible to put a baby gate at the top of the stairs.
* We can provide a travel cot and a high chair with advance notice.
* High quality Egyptian cotton bed linen and towels are provided as standard but feel free to bring your own by prior arrangement.
*The secluded, enclosed, sunny garden is a lovely feature of this property and seating is provided on the Yorkshire stone patio for you to enjoy the view.
*Please be aware that as the cottage is on the valley side, there is a drop from the top of the wall at the end of the garden to the pavement so a child will need supervision. However, we have installed a small wire fence too.
* There are 10 steps leading from the gate on the pavement to the cottage door which may prove tricky if you are not good on your feet and the path can be slippery at times.
Free on street parking is available nearby with no restrictions.
No pets allowed.
No illegal activities.
No smoking or vaping inside the property.
It is expected that the cottage will be left clean and tidy on departure although a final tip top clean is included in the rental cost so that our high standards are maintained for the next visitors. For the safety of housekeepers, we ask guests to strip the bed and put linen and towels in a green bag provided and to empty all rubbish from bins into the dustbins outside the back door before departure.
We STRONGLY advise ALL guests to take out travel insurance as our cancellation policy is very clear on this site.
Please note that we cannot be responsible for loss of water, gas, electricity or Wi-fi as they are outside our control and in the event of a failure in service, we are unable to refund you for any inconvenience this may cause.

Cottage is absolutely as advertised - charming and comfortable! Jane made sure we had all the necessary info, and provided a fascinating family/cottage history. Good location for walking and bus routes around the Calder Valley.

Lovely place to stay and although not suitable for mobility restricted there was access from the back of property avoiding the steps at the front. The place was clean and had everything you could have needed. Would consider visiting again.

We loved staying at Dyer's Cottage! We moved right in & felt very much at home for our 5 days. It's centrally located for daytrips-- we drove to Fountains Abbey, Saltaire Village, Manchester & Conwy Castle in Wales. Besides seeing closer & more local areas & events. We found a sweetheart of a cottage there in Sowerby Bridge. Thanks Jane for your details in the cottage.

Spacious and well-equipped
We spent Christmas in this delightful cottage and it was perfect for the two of us. Everything was clean and beautifully furnished. It was nice and cosy, but more spacious than expected. Well-equipped kitchen, an amazing bath and bathroom, the most comfortable bed, lovely cosy fire - we even had a full-sized Christmas tree! The owners had thought of everything. Great pub just two doors down. Lots of nice walks in local area, took us about 40 minutes to walk into Halifax centre. Would definitely recommend and would love to return at some point.

The property is very well-maintained and comfortable. I own a vacation rental and know how much effort it takes to maintain a place like Jane does. The place is well-stocked in the kitchen and I didn’t need anything at all. I really enjoyed the pub next-door and wish I had a place like this near my house in Texas.
The plumbing fixtures are all very nice and the lighting is excellent. The view from the bedroom window out over the country side is spectacular in the morning. The neighbors are very nice and quiet and I was always able to get a parking spot right in front of the property.
I looked through the photo album of the remodel project and it is a truly remarkable restoration.
I highly recommend this property as a vacation rental or corporate rental for anyone.

We had lovely four nights in a very comfortable, well appointed, dog friendly cottage. All mod cons but loaded with history. The cottage is very well appointed with everything you could need for a short stay. Lots of information about the local area and details of the best places to eat and drink. ( A real gem is the Wainhouse Tavern 3 doors away. The lamb pie is amazing).
Our host was really knowledge about the local area and provided us with some great ideas for places to visit. Overall we had a fabulous few days and would highly recommend the cottage to anyone who wishes to experience the Calder Valley and surrounding area..

Truly Beautiful Home
My wife and I loved Dyer's Cottage for many reasons. Jane, the owner was generous with her time and sharing insights to the Halifax area. The accommodations are splendid, clean and quiet. Modern amenities and comfortable, even a view of the pastures on the hills beyond from the bedroom window. There is street parking and a traditional British Pub three doors down - excellent! A great jump off point to explore Yorkshire and Lancaster National Trust sites, National Parks, York by train was less than an hour. Halifax is beautiful in it's own right.
Jane and Dyer's Cottage are as delightful as the beautiful English country side and the cheerful friendliness of the people of Yorkshire. We look forward to coming back and will spread the word, if asked. Fantastic !

We arrived to find the cottage exactly as it was presented on the website. Very welcoming and cosy. The communication from the owner was first class and would highly recommend a stay in this property. John and Nicola May 2017

Beautiful cosy cottage.
Dyers cottage is perfect for a break in the countryside. It is beautifully renovated, extremely well equipped and offers a comfort that makes you feel you have been there longer than a few days. There is an abundance of local walks on the doorstep with breathtaking scenery, in addition just a short walk away are pubs, restaurants and bars offering great food, locally brewed beers and hospitality. We will definitely be back for a longer stay!

Perfect place to stay, well equipped, well located
Thank you Jane and Rob - I loved my stay, the cottage was everything I hoped for and more. Very cozy, well equipped (there was never anything I looked for and couldn't find) and a great location right near the hills, did lots of walking rain or shine. Thank you for being so responsive to all of my questions and needs. Will stay again if I am in Halifax!

Beautifully renovated cottage
We were totally pleased with the cottage and also the owner, Jane. She welcomed us with groceries so we did not have to go out to shop immediately and she also had a vase of sweet williams on the window bottom. Additionally, she introduced us to one of the neighbours who was very friendly and helpful during our three weeks stay.
Everything in the cottage was as advertised, spotless, and well maintained. We lacked for nothing! Jane was also readily available to answer any questions. The pub was two doors away serving traditional Yorkshire fare and other foods. All the locals in the pub were also very friendly and helpful. Several good restaurants are in the area and I would not hesitaite to rebook in the future.

Short break with our dog
Lovely little cottage ideal for two with a great bathroom and a fabulous superking sized bed. Be aware of the top step on the stairs though as it is a little higher than the others and can catch you out when going downstairs if you forget. The neighbours on both sides are lovely and ready to give you advice on things to do and see in the local area. Our dog loved it with walks along the Rochdale canal and also up to the nearby Wainhouse Tower.

Very comfortable cottage, ideal for sightseeing.
We had a really lovely time at your cottage and were impressed with all your renovations and found the bathroom really luxurious. The cottage was well equipped and the bed was really comfortable. We found the cottage very accommodating and a great base to explore the local attractions. We particularly enjoyed visiting Howarth, home of the Bronte sisters, as the BBC were preparing to film a drama about their brother and were busy making the shops in the village look authentic for the period. We would recommend a trip to The Navigation Pub , great food and very friendly service, but be prepared for the hilly walk back to the cottage.

Our time spent in a wonderful Cottage in Halifax
The lovely Dyer's Cottage which had everything we needed for our week long stay was very impressive. The cottage has been renovated to a very high standard, but has kept it's old world charm. We would like to thank Jane for being the perfect host. I would highly recommend Halifax and Jane's beautiful cottage.

Beautiful cosy cottage
We stayed in the cottage for a longer term stay whilst our new house was being renovated and it was the perfect place to come back to and relax away from the building work! The cottage has been renovated to a high standard, and has great facilities, I particularly enjoyed the huge bath after a day labouring and the shower is also a high powered. The living room has plenty of room, complete with a wood burner effect gas fire for those chilly evenings and whilst the kitchen is compact it has everything you need for a holiday stay. There is a pretty garden at the front with a bench seat & make sure that you take advantage of any sunny mornings and evenings to sit out with a drink! I'd certainly stay again & would recommend it to family or friends visiting the area. Jane was great to deal with & we'll be inviting her to our new house when it's finally ready.
As a local I'll recommend a few places that are within walking/short driving distance; The Shepherds Rest pub is only a 10 minute walk down the hill heading towards Sowerby Bridge - traditional pub with a warm welcome.
If you carry on into Sowerby Bridge there are several to choose from - The Works is an freehouse serving a wide range of real ales & good wine and food during the day and a great brunch menu on Sundays (it also has a monthly folk night on a Wednesday and a comedy club on a Saturday which attracts a wide range of comedians). The Firehouse serves great food upstairs with a busy bar area on the ground floor. The Hogshead Tavern is a new addition - real ales, wine in a large converted workshop. Cobblestones Bar & Bistro serves great food with a bit of a twist and is in a perfect spot overlooking the canal.
If you want to venture slightly further afield I'd recommend The Winterburn just out of Warley village (5 min drive or a nice healthy walk to work up an appetite) - worth going for the views alone and it's all down hill on the way back! Halifax also has a good range of pubs & restaurants, The Three Pigeons is a grade 2 listed building with it's original 1920's decor intact (and a warm welcome to go with it) for restaurants try Ricci's place in the town centre or Ricci's Tapas at the Dean Clough complex.
Halifax is good central spot for venturing further afield. There are good train links to Leeds & Manchester & you can easily go into the Yorkshire Dales or the Peak District for a day, or even the East Coast if you get up early
