About this house rental
Dramatic beam architecture with massive Bay Bridge timbers, walls all red cedar, main house is 3 Bdr and 2 Ba, 3200 sq. ft. There are views of the ocean from every window but also incredible privacy, with the house sited on a hill, in the midst of 3 acres of coastal property with meadow.
Renting the main house also gives you the option to add on a beautiful, two-story 1 BR / 1 BA studio loft with ocean views, full bath and full kitchen (studio details below). The main house capacity is maximum 8 people, including children, and max 6 adults. Renting the studio as well will give you space for up to another 2 adults and 2 children. *Please note: when indicating the number of guests in your reservation request, please include only those staying in the main house; studio arrangements will be made separately*
This property is not The Sea Ranch (a planned development to the south of Gualala), but the wild, rural Mendocino coast. Constantly changing scenery from morning sunrise to evening sunset, whale watching and wildlife. Also wonderfully landscaped grounds with fruit trees, flowers and herbs, big yard for kids to play in, croquet set, outdoor chairs to watch the sun go down. The house is a unique masterpiece designed and handcrafted by a noted local architect, who owned the house for decades until selling to current owner.
Kitchen has granite and wood countertops and is fully equipped with all new appliances, including gas stove. Expansive loft and office space with sunburst window, multiple skylights, huge windows with stunning 180 degree views up and down the coast. Large, ocean-view hot tub, outdoor couch, stone fireplace with wood-burning stove, new propane furnace, Apple TV with Netflix subscription, DVD player, games, lots of books. Furnished comfortably in contemporary style. Outlet in driveway for electric car charging.
For people working remotely, the house is equipped with the fastest internet on this part of the coast (Further Reach Business Platinum, 110 Mbps upload/download, 60 Mbps minimum) and a cell phone booster that provides the best reception for miles around. The loft boasts two desks (one is a brand-new, sit-stand hydraulic desk), both equipped with high-quality monitors and desk chairs, as well as a multifunction printer. (Guests would need to provide their own keyboard/trackpads and adaptors for the HDMI cables.)
Master king bedroom upstairs, one queen bed and one double bed downstairs, all with ocean views. The living room couch folds out into a fullsized bed, a loveseat in the loft opens to a twin, and there is a queen futon in a private alcove in the loft that is a perfect, private extra sleeping area. Although the bedrooms are all very private, the house has many windows and skylights and is filled with light as soon as the sun rises, so those who like to sleep in late might want to bring eye-shades.
The loft and office space are spectacular, with a massive sunburst window giving views to the south, multiple skylights and large balcony-windows that allow one to step out past the roofline and give dramatic views up and down the coast. Recent re-roofing job also included all-new skylights, including openable ones in the loft, master bedroom and master bath that provide both views and fresh air.
Famous Cooks Beach is right across the street. Beachcomb, surf, or jump in the waves right in your front yard. Kayak the Gualala River (2 kayaks available for guests to use), fish, or take in world-class hiking, local Sonoma Coast wineries and spectacular Anderson Valley (Mendocino) or Russian River Valley (Sonoma) wine trail. Or just relax and whale watch from the upstairs loft or while enjoying the hot tub.
Perfect for art lovers, artists, writers, families, reunions, dreamers, romantic getaway seekers, nature and ocean lovers and those seeking serenity in an architecturally unique house. A family of grey foxes live on the property and, if you get up early enough, you can see them hunting the grounds. The kitchen faces south with ocean views, and ideally located to step out onto the deck for outdoor dining. Would make an ideal writing or artistic creation getaway, as well as a base for comfortable remote working; weekly, monthly and academic semester rates also available.
House is less than 2 miles north of the town of Gualala. The town offers 2 good markets (one organic), art galleries, great independent bookstore, funky cafes, video rentals, gym, yoga studio, and many excellent restaurants. Quite a few other restaurants in area, including world-class St. Orres (walking distance from house), Vue, Sea Ranch Lodge and Timber Cove Resort’s Coast Kitchen.
Parking easily for 4-5 cars, with outdoor electric outlet for slow trickle-charging of electric car. Set back from the road, private estate feeling, on berm above and to the West of Highway 1 with thick forest screen, so almost no traffic noise, which is rare for oceanfront property along this stretch of coast. We are in the banana-belt area of Northern Sonoma / Southern Mendocino, in the fog shadow of Pt. Arena, so usually very sunny and mild.
Note for winter bookings: solar power combined with a Tesla powerwall backup for power outages is in the works, but in the meantime the house is fully equipped for blackouts, with a large portable powerwall to run small appliances, charge laptops and phones, etc., plenty of lamps and headlights and flashlights, and a wood-burning stove that keeps the main living area comfortable. Details in the house handbook.
With advance notice, the garage studio is available as an add-on to the main house, which gives you full and exclusive use of the almost 3 acre estate. It is otherwise occasionally occupied by the owner or friends, in which case you will still have exclusive use of the entire property except for the small area immediately beside and behind the garage.
** The Studio **
A separate, two-story, ocean-view studio on the back of the property (above and beside the garage) will give you space for up to an additional 4 people (2 adults, 2 children). 648 sq feet (264 upstairs, 384 downstairs), the unit is attached to garage behind the main house and has two floors.
It is a stunning but cozy space. The upstairs bedroom / living room has a bank of three big, brand-new skylights providing ocean views and amazing light, as well as ocean views from both the north and south windows. The lower full bath and kitchen / dining room is to the side of the garage, and lets out to small private patio and attached small greenhouse with citrus trees and herbs.
The studio has a new queen bed and two couches that fold into twin futons. Please note: no dogs allowed in the studio.
The studio has its own separate rental rate of 33% of the main house base rate (before any additional guest fees) for 2 guests, with a $40 additional guest fee per night for any third or fourth guest. It also requires an additional $100 cleaning fee. All of this can be paid either as an added fee on this site or via separate arrangement. Contact me for details.

Guests access house through a keypad with code provided at booking.
In main house, maximum 8 people, including children over 2 years of age, and a maximum of 6 adults. Renting studio as well allows up to another 2 adults and 2 children, as well as providing an extra full bath and full kitchen.
1-2 dogs are welcome, and the beach across the street is dog-friendly. There is a $100 pet fee, per dog (if you have a second dog, the second fee is payable to owner through separate arrangement). We'd also appreciate it if shedding dogs are as much as possible kept off the furniture; there is a pet cover for the couch that can be used. Excess cleaning charges (for instance, for fur coating all surfaces of house, uncleaned dog droppings, etc.) may also be held back from security deposit. We are pet friendly; please help us to stay that way. Please no dogs in the studio.
Owner is university professor in Vancouver, Canada, and happy to answer any questions or deal with concerns by phone, text or via e-mail.
Note on our cleaning fee, which is relatively high: We’ve stayed in a fair number of short-term rental places, and cleanliness levels vary. Sometimes it’s spotless, sometimes you’re not sure what surfaces are safe to touch. How recently was that comforter cover washed? Sunburst is always brought to hotel-level cleanliness, which in a house of this size (especially one that allows dogs) takes time. The spa is also always professionally serviced between guests. We pay our property manager and helpers relatively high hourly wages because they are meticulous professionals, can handle any cleaning or maintenance emergency with grace and aplomb, and because they are great people and our friends. Sunburst could not function as a rental property without them. The cleaning fee is set at what is basically our historically minimum cost, which we very occasionally encounter (2 guests with no pets who don't light a fire, eat out for all their meals, strip their bed as requested, and leave the entire downstairs wing untouched); otherwise we pay the difference.
11% local Mendocino tax for any rentals under 30 days included in your VRBO total charge.

Our family of 11 met here for a 4 day celebration. We enjoyed the unique architecture and very clean accommodation. Wonderful biking and tide pools to explore.

The Sunburst house is amazing. We had both sunny and rainy weather and the light from the windows was beautiful. More beautiful than the pictures. Sara was kind and helpful. Ted, you have a great property and we hope to rent it again. Thanks for sharing it with our family!!

We had a large group of mostly teenagers who came to California for a senior trip. Gualala was a wonderful little town, and this house was perfect for our group. Very peaceful, plenty of space, beautiful setting and owner who was very easy to work with. Would highly recommend and would definitely stay again!

The house was all that we hoped it would be. It was a rare occasion for us to rendezvous. We really enjoyed our time there, the amazing views from every room (and the hot tub) and the proximity to all that Gualala and the coast has to offer. We also really appreciated the timely and concise instructions for how to access and use everything the host had to offer. We can’t wait to visit again!

My husband and I took our 3 kids and our dog fora few days of and rest and relaxation. The stunning 180 degree views from this house are unbeatable! We had so much fun playing whiffle ball and other games in the private yard, enjoyed the hot tub with a view, and walking down to the beach. The house is very clean and well equipped for cooking, playing games, and reading. We will be back!

What a splendid stay! Thank you for opening up for your home to our family and friends. We were in awe of the surrounding view, remodeled kitchen, spacious living area, hot tub and beautifully detailed binder you left with history and details to make our stay complete. Your purposeful use of refurbished materials did not go unappreciated. The doors are all so lovely and the welded sun/window off the deck lends a industrial artistic view. Every direction we looked from the house, we were looking at the ocean. We can’t wait to see all the further improvements you are making. Can’t beat the proximity to Cook’s beach. We spent the whole day taking in the sun at the beach while the boys skim boarded.
We had a touch of rain the last night so we cozied up and enjoyed the wood fireplace what was prepared for us with kindling and paper. Thank you again for the hospitality. This house is lovely.

The place definitely has plenty of interesting architectural details. Views are lovely. Large hot tub was very nice and clean. Small dog friendly beach is walking distance. Town with a few stores was close by and we found everything we needed.
Place looks bigger in the pictures that in reality. There is a long term tenant on the property (very friendly, lives in the unit in the back of the house) that limits full privacy and use of the property. There are also parts of the rental unit that were locked and labeled "private". Owner sent instructions making about 1/3 of the pictured property off limits.
Property is not fenced and deer come in the evenings. They are beautiful to watch but yard was covered with ticks. This was a huge problem, especially with two dogs. We ended up going to the store for tick spray and comb for the dogs, and tick remover for humans. Dogs were still covered with them, even after being sprayed, every time we went out. Deck is not big so being in the grass was unavoidable.
House has good flow. Master bedroom upstairs is quite comfortable. We did kill a spider in the bed on our first night. We only used one of the two bedrooms downstairs. Bed was not as comfortable as the master room and I did get a spider bite while sleeping. It would get cold at night (January) and we used central heating that works great for common areas and upstairs gets very hot. Downstairs bedroom stayed cold and needed a little heater that was in the closet. There is a fireplace in the living room with wood provided for 2 nights, we stayed 5 (additional wood can be purchased for $20/bundle).
House gets warm during the day from the sun. Windows are old and hard to open and only a few have bug screens.
Living room furniture is not very comfortable and not sufficient if coming with a larger group. There is a small sectional (impossible for 2 people to lay on the couch and watch a movie) and a chair.
We enjoyed the quiet and sound of the waves. Sunsets were incredible too! We thought the price was a bit on a high side considering everything.

A magical, secluded retreat on a bluff overlooking the pacific. The long, solid wood beams and wood exterior blended serenely with the surrounding forest. And a canopy of glass windows throughout made you feel like you were part of it all. Adding to the magic, were visits at dusk from foxes and deer grazing on the rolling grounds. Look forward to returning one day.

Our stay
The setting was lovely. A wonderful feeling of getting away. Ocean view and sounds, interesting and inviting home and even seal barks on our last day. Next time I might do more hanging out and enjoying the property and less driving to surrounding interests all around.

3rd Time staying
We love staying at this lovely and unique property. This was our third time staying in February and it has continued to be one of our favorite locations in California. It has been a wonderful experience to see how the space has evolved and become more comfortable and accommodating. We have experienced the house in both beautiful sunny clear weather and full blown winter storms and have enjoyed it immensely in all circumstances. Thanks for being a great host Ted!!

architectural masterpiece in gualala
this property is simply amazing. there are no words or images that can convey the volumes of the spaces, the materiality of the interiors, nor its siting on the ocean front. skip sea ranch; this is the place to be.
aside from the proximity to the water, the distance from town, and the architecture itself, the place was very comfortably furnished. we had everything we needed for an exceptionally comfortable weekend. the kitchen is well stocked and we didn't need anything that wasn't there for our stay.
the owners are very communicative and clearly love and understand this special place. they take great care of the home and the renters.
truly worth every penny and we will certainly be back again as soon as time permits. enjoy!!

Beautiful Ocean View Home
Really nice home with a large yard for activities. Beautiful views. Spacious living room. The short walk to the beach was an extra perk! Communication with host was easy, as well as he check in process. Two markets nearby in case you need to replenish your goods.
There was a person staying in the garage studio while we were there but we had no interaction with them so it was fine.

Amazing location and house!!!
We had a fantastic vacation. The location is perfect with panoramic ocean views and a short walk to Cooks beach. The house is beautiful with great architectural details and a Northern California vibe. The beds were very comfortable. Evenings in the hot tub were also amazing. We saw a fox and deer from inside the house. Gualala and the surroundings small towns were also fun to explore and great hiking and beaches everywhere. The coast is so dramatic you could explore it for weeks. Wine tasting is close too!! The owners are very easy to contact and work with. I can't wait to see the transformation of the house and property as they continue to improve and update.
