About this house rental
The original home of artist Hazel Rochester, is now a mixture of old and new. There are four bedrooms and two full baths on the second floor with two stairwells (one on each end). It’s a large house, about 3K sq ft. There was a fifth bedroom on the first floor that we use as a media room. It can still house humans if necessary. One bath upstairs features a clawfoot tub for bathing (not showers). There are two dining rooms, one being more formal with seating for eight.
Rochester House is close to restaurants, trails, family-friendly activities, and lake beaches. It's convenient to many destinations, including LVRT, Hill Farmstead, Caspian Lake (beach) and Lost Nation Brewing. A short walk to the Farmer's Market, grocery stores, and most village restaurants. Downtown is .7 miles, a 15 min walk. This may be too far in the winter. There is a city plowed sidewalk all the way during snow season if needed. The House of Pizza is only .2 miles (two blocks).
This house is in the village. It is not a secluded country location. There is a neighboring house close on one side. The road has a total of three houses on it. It's close to the main road through town.
There is no air conditioning as summers are usually cool. Each bedroom is equipped with a box fan to cool down the rooms in the evening if there is a rare heat wave. The home is heated and stays warm during the winter.

We had 6 adults - 2 couples and 2 singles - staying at the house. It was a great accommodation for us. Big house with lots of rooms and opportunities for both togetherness and alone time. The location is good, convenient to Montpelier and Stowe, and the neighbor is very nice. As others have mentioned, it is close to traffic. We stayed in the summer and with windows open at night, we could hear the vehicles. Kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils, and there is a Tops grocery store right across the street. The property manager was easy to communicate with and responsive to our needs. We would stay again!

We enjoyed our stay and Paul was a helpful and gracious host. Check-in and check-out instructions were clear and easy to follow, and Paul made our evening arrival easier by leaving a light on for us. The house had more than enough space for our family - including plenty of common spaces to gather in case of rain (and it's Vermont, so of course there's rain). The house is close to a main street, which made access easy.

It was an awesome stay, close to supplies and attractions. Natural beauty is beyond imagination! Our trip to US for fall colours was made worthy!
Improvements: Heating of water in bath and kitchen, dishwasher needs to be checked.

Not a bad rental, especially if you are in the area for work. There were a couple things that prevented this rental from getting a higher score.
The dishwasher was broken so doing dishes was tough, especially without a drying rack. Also, visitors are expected to take their own trash, which was mentioned on the listing, but for a vacation rental is not a positive point. Last thing was that the drive way did not get plowed. It is a steep driveway and this is something that should be taken care of in winter months in NE Vermont.

The home is spacious, with an extra effort to provide lots of blankets, pillows and kitchen equipment. Paul is an excellent host.

From the pictures and description you think this will be a quiet secluded home, but when you get there you see it's a little different. Pic of the house is from the back at just the right angle to not show the neighboring house just 15 feet away. The front drive for both houses is maybe 30 yards give or take from a main road running through town that has fairly heavy traffic with heavy trucks that you get to listen to at all hours of the day AND night which becomes an issue since there is no air conditioning you sleep with windows open to help cool the house. The house itself is a neat historic house. It has good size rooms and if you're just looking for a place to lay your head down at night it will serve it's purpose.

We stayed here while visiting family in the area. Everything was as expected from the listing. Paul was very accommodating and easy to work with via email. No problems at all and would definitely come back here!

We had a great stay at this house and were all pleasantly surprised as soon as we walked in. The place is very spacious and fit six of us very comfortably. The owner was very attentive and replied to my questions very quickly. Definitely recommend getting food from the Hardwick House of Pizza located closeby!
