About this house rental
Watch the bountiful wildlife and the seasons change on the Big Sioux River while listening to the water flowing over the Klondike Dam from the large deck, lower level porch or new 7 person hot tub. The exterior to this home resembles a rustic cabin in the woods but is far from rustic once you enter the front door and see the modern amenities.
Most of this home is constructed from reclaimed lumber from the 1900s. Much of the wood is Southern Yellow pine with the Great Room constructed from reclaimed 2 x 6s. The Great Room on the main level overlooks the Big Sioux River through 2 large windows and a sliding glass door to an expansive covered balcony. The cabinets were hand made for the home from reclaimed lumber but the granite countertops offer elegance as well.
The main floor has a full kitchen, one bedroom and one full bathroom. It also has a cozy gas heater. The dining area has a large table for family card games, or just relaxing with your morning coffee looking out the large windows.
The lower level is a walkout with nine foot ceilings that gives it an open feel. There is two bedrooms, a bath, a laundry room and a family room with another cozy gas heater with remote thermostats. The entire lower level is completed in knotty pine with log style furniture to complement the rustic feel. It also offers a large TV, pull out queen sofa sleeper and electric recliner to enjoy a little down time watching that football game or movies or finish that great novel. There is a large log table here also to play cards, games or complete crossword puzzles. There is also a laundry room with Samsung washer and dryer. This level has a door which leads to a large covered patio, landscaped yard, and new hot tub! The river is less than 50 yards in front of this exit, but one will not be able to access the river from the home due to a very steep incline so the land is left natural with trees, tall grass and wild flowers.
You can access the river though, one block away at the historical Klondike dam site which now is closed to traffic, but offers a large bridge to fish from. Kayaks also enter and exit at this point for a beautiful experience down the Big Sioux River.
Fishing - Iowa or SD fishing license
Relaxing – you won’t need a sound machine or fan for white noise here. Just sleep with the windows open and hear the sound of the babbling waterfalls below.
History
The Klondike Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, and given the #75000696.
Little remains of the Klondike Mill except an old stone wall and a few artifacts from the historical structure. It is located on the Iowa side of the dam where a bridge spans the Big Sioux River, just beneath the public access parking area.
Kayak or Canoe
There is a loading/exiting area approx. one block from the house where one can take the scenic 3.5 mile ride to Canton or exit from the up-river trail from Sioux Falls. The Canton trek is rated as one of the best with steep canyon sidewalls.
Bird-Animal watch
Perfect area to just sit on the porch and watch. Bald Eagles and deer are a daily site in this area.
In addition, there is a wealth of animal life on the waters of small South Dakota lakes, rivers, and creeks, including geese, ducks, pelicans, great blue heron, egrets, hawks, owls, perching birds, deer, raccoons, and beaver. Eagles, fox, and coyote are also sometimes spotted.
Lake Pahoja Recreation Area
2.5 miles west on Highway 276 has something for everyone!
It is open year-round and offers a variety of recreation activities such as ice fishing, hunting, biking, bird watching, canoeing, frisbee golf, outdoor basketball court plus a whole lot more.
All of the facilities have been made handicapped accessible along with the 1 1/3 mile asphalt hiking/biking trail along the north shore. A 3 2/3 mile hiking trail encircles the lake for the nature and exercise enthusiasts.
At the northeast end of the lake there is a 350' x 100' swimming beach and an adjoining comfort station for those interested in a little sun and fun!
$5 daily fee.

We had a wonderful stay in your peaceful cabin by the river. The property owners were very responsive with questions. The hot tub was wonderful. We would absolutely stay here again.

Lots of steps for 3 old ladies! (62 years old). Getting in and out with having to open the garage door every time. The house itself was beautiful and peaceful. We felt that the chores that we were expected to do were unnecessary.

Was a beautiful property and environment. The facility was very clean and was described very accurately. We really enjoyed our stay!

Loved the property. Very nice way to relax after a day of driving. Geese & ducks are hatching their young on the river. Was cool to listen to them speak to each other. Unusual layout, but it works!! Beds were comfortable, furnace heating was amazing. The house behind the property made us uneasy, but we kept to ourselves. I think you should own more properties for rental if you can. God Bless. Thx for sharing your home with us.

Scenic location with great view of the river and much wildlife. Nice place, clean and great for gathering. Only draw back is the surrounding properties are a mess.

We enjoyed our stay at the cabin for New Year’s Eve with our teenagers. The privacy of the property was nice and the scenery was even better, we got a surprise visit from an eagle. We took advantage of the hot tub even though it was cold out and we liked that shopping wasn’t too far away. Thank you for having us, we hope to stay again in the summer sometime!

My family spent the Thanksgiving holiday at this cabin. It was decorated so beautifully with autumn/Thanksgiving decor which was a wonderful, unexpected touch of home. It was a perfect size for the 6 of us and we really enjoyed the hot tub! This cabin was so cozy and inviting! So much more than we expected. Great location as well. You felt like you were in your own world, but the towns and are only a few mins drive away. I highly recommend this cabin for a lovely, relaxing time.

The property was everything advertised and more. We used it as a base camp to explore four states. It gave a frontier atmosphere with with all the modern features and comforts of home. We loved our time spent there.

Everything was just as it appeared online. Beautiful view and nice quiet location. It ended up being just me alone so the entire lower level went unused.

Even though we worked remotely part of the time, the location of the house was perfect. Tge views from inside and out are beautiful. Listening to the river & nature was truly relaxing. Cabin is remote enough to offer privacy but close to anything you may need or want to do.

We enjoyed our stay. This cabin is super cute, relaxing and in a fun location.
We'd recommend it EXCEPT there is a mold problem that must be addressed. We first discovered it when we went to do some laundry. The washer had a major mold problem and we considered it unusable. This was especially concerning since the linens likely had been washed in the same machine. The linens seemed clean and probably bleached, so we still used them.
There was additional mold in some other basement places, including some door frames and behind the tub.
If the owners can confirm this health issue is resolved, I wouldn't hesitate to return. I've messaged them directly with more details and photos. I hate to blindside them with a negative review, but I feel compelled to warn other travelers.
Oh, one more thing: Read the provided binder of materials carefully. The hot tub chemistry is expected to be monitored and maintained by the guests. It's a bit fiddly to test and adjust the various chemicals.

We were so happy with our stay at the Larchwood Cabin. The sunsets were absolutely amazing and the thunderstorm on our last night on the deck was a little slice of heaven. Everything was clean and tidy. We were able to have breakfast in Minnesota and lunch in Iowa and dinner in South Dakota - it is so close to everything! Already planning another stay soon!!

Awesome place to stay! We all loved it, only thing maybe from experience of other places would be to maybe have some small generic condiments on hand like ketchup and maple syrup.

Very nice place! Beautiful home! Beds were FABULOUS!! Such a nice, comfortable sleep after sightseeing in Sioux Falls!
Enjoyed firepit and marvelous view!

This cabin didn't disappoint! Although it seems isolated, it is actually very close to many attractions. We enjoyed Sioux Falls which was an easy, just less than 30 minute drive. Also, the arboretum, casino, dairy farm, winery, and state parks all very close. It was so beautiful and peaceful sitting on the deck or patio watching birds and listening to the rapids. GREAT place for our annual sister trip!!

My husband and his brothers stayed here for a week. My husband said I couldn't have picked a better spot for them! They were surrounded by water and quiet! They fished the hearts out.

This house was great overflow lodging for our annual family event just 5 miles away. Beds were very comfortable. We didn't get an opportunity to enjoy the hot tub, but can imagine how relaxing an evening in the hot tub would have been. We fit our two large SUVs in the garage just fine. Thank you, Vickie!

We take a short family trip each winter. The cabin was beautiful along with the large windows overlooking the river. We were able to see many eagles from the warmth of the cabin. The gas stoves made it extra cozy as the temperatures outside dropped. We enjoyed using the hot tub and playing games. This was a great spot to enjoy family time.

This was our 2nd time staying at this property. We love the quiet peacefulness of it. It's perfect for getting away from it all! We celebrated our family Christmas, traveling from 3 different areas and this is a great central location. The kids and adults alike all loved being out on the deck and enjoying the sound of the river below as well as going on walks on the quiet roads. We did take a short couple mile trip down the road to the creamery for delicious ice cream and seeing the farm! I highly recommend booking this and look forward to stayng here again.

My wife and I stayed for three days and absolutely loved every minute of it. We loved spending time in the hot tub and looking at the wildlife on the frozen river below. The inside of the cabin was also very beautiful. It was decorated for the Christmas season and had everything we needed.

Our son lives in Rapid City and we live in the Twin Cities so were looking for a location in between. This worked great. Loved the hot tub. Had issues with the downstairs stove -- we never did get it to work, which would have been nice, since it was very cold our first two nights. Could have used a bit more lighting and comfy chairs for reading -- we are all readers. But, overall it worked well and was convenient to Sioux Falls. Thanks for sharing your home with us.

Great place for our family to gather and spend time together. Beautiful brisk walk along the river and the sound of the frozen Klondike was incredible.

This is a lovely location. The views and wildlife were awesome. We saw deer and the eagles were soaring. Hosts were very accommodating and decorated the house for us for Christmas. Wifi was excellent. The beds were good, and the hottub was a wonderful bonus. Only problem we had was using the tv's/dvd. Would be helpful to have some detailed directions for us smart tv challenged folks. Thanks for everything
