About this cabin rental
RIFUGIO DI MONTAGNA IS ITALIAN FOR 'MOUNTAIN REFUGE' ~ Our refuge in the Dodge Ridge/Pinecrest area at 5,300 ft elevation is the perfect place for you and your family and friends to spend together in a unique combination of new construction infused with traditional memorabilia.
THE PINECREST TRADITION BEGAN WITH GRANDPA AND GRANDMA IN THE '50's ~ This 2,200 square foot mountain home was lovingly constructed in 2007 as a place to recharge and relax, and is located on a quiet street in Cold Springs. Having grown up with grandparents who owned a cabin in the area for many years, this home was built after thoughtful planning and much creativity to use and enjoy some of the furnishings that were located in the old cabin. Rifugio di Montagna was actually designed 'around' the grand old dining room table which can seat up to 12 and is the focal point of the home.
A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RIFUGIO ~ The slate floors and granite countertops of the interior are combined with the natural colors of the outdoors making for a warm and cozy refuge for your mind and spirit. The living areas were specifically made to be the largest rooms in the cabin and to flow together. The spacious kitchen has an island and a breakfast bar which opens to the dining room, which in turn is connected to the 24' high ceilinged Great Room. The Master Suite is also located on this floor and has it's own entry AND A KING SIZE BED. You will feel as though you are showering outside under a waterfall in the oversized, full slate shower in the ensuite Master Bathroom.
The loft upstairs has a sectional couch that quickly converts to a Queen sleeper.
This room overlooks the Great Room and is flanked by two bedrooms, BOTH OF WHICH HAVE KING-SIZE MATTRESSES. (No more arguing over who has to take the 'little' bed!!!) There is also a full bathroom on this floor with a tub/shower combo. All of the beds are fitted with 500 and 400 thread count sheets, beautiful hand-crafted quilts, and 100% goose down comforters. The two raised twin-sized Deluxe AeroBeds can be automatically inflated in three minutes and can be used in any room where there is carpeting allowing families great flexibility for sleeping. We also have a full foam mattress that can be used on the floor in any of the bedrooms or the loft.
The 560 square foot front deck wraps around three sides of the house, bringing the outdoors right to your feet. And who wants to eat indoors when the perfect Summer weather calls you outside to dine on our custom-made, bar height picnic table? As an alternative, sit out on the back deck which offers a view of the landscaped area and the undeveloped forest beyond. In the Winter you will be glad you've chosen to rent a newly-constructed, well-insulated cabin with double-paned windows plus two sources of warmth - the fireplace and central heat. AND - we've added a generator in May of 2022 so that you will never be out of power - even when PG&E power goes out all around, our lights, heat (or AC) and all other amenities will still be on!!
THE PINECREST/DODGE RIDGE AREA CAN BE YOUR TRADITION, TOO! ~ Or, maybe it already is and you want to make wonderful new memories at Rifugio! There are many fabulous things to do in the area - great family skiing/snowboarding at Dodge Ridge and sledding at High Sierra Snowplay in the Winter, and in the Summer, the great fishing, hiking, and boating choices are endless. We've prepared a book at the cabin - just for you - which lists all of the wonderful things to do/places to see, with Rifugio as your home base. Come ~ relax, refresh and recharge ~ experience Rifugio di Montagna for yourself!

Amazing property that is beautiful and for a cabin is absolute luxury. Found the one I will want to book for our yearly vacation from here on out.

We had a few days with all of our grown children & was looking for a place that could sleep all of us. The cabin was beautiful, comfortable & had everything we needed. Definitely would recommend & would stay again next time.

We have rented many VRBO properties in US and abroad. This is the first time we have experienced these:
The host accepted our renting request within 1 hour when we booked. And we arrived within 16 hours later, due to global IT problem that canceled our flight.
1/ A welcome gift basket and greeting card! So classy
2/ The kitchen full of needed cooking tools, utensils and beautiful dishes.
3/ Bathrooms full of soap, shampoo, body wash
4/ Laundry room full of detergent, dryer sheet and others.
Then on top of that:
The host called to check in, in person welcome, and he was just a second away every time we had questions.
THIS IS AN EXEPTIONAL HOST, A WONDERFUL PLACE. He helped to ease a very difficult travel problem that we faced. We RECOMMEND this place đź’Ż. đź’ś

This is hands down the best mountain rental I’ve had the pleasure to vacation in. The house is very comfortable, very nicely appointed and the hosts are very helpful and a pleasure to work with. Three bathrooms (2 showers) and a generously appointed and finished kitchen, a large great room, capacious dining area and expansive deck made for the best stay we’ve had in the mountains. The house is within easy striking distance of Pinecrest Lake and Strawberry, 15 minutes from the terrific grocery in Twain Harte and about an hour from Kennedy Meadows. Negatives? We didn’t catch any fish. Can’t be my fault, but I can’t really blame the hosts who were both charming and gave me fishing advice which my companions chose to ignore. The takeaway here is, don’t go fishing with my cousins and you’ll have a perfect stay.

We booked our 4 day Christmas getaway with the family at Paul and Pam's Cabin and I have to say it was just so lovely! It was very spacious and close to Pinecrest Lake which was very convenient. Paul even called the cabin the next day we arrived just to check and make sure we were happy with everything and even had a little welcome basket waiting for us when we arrived. The only bad thing was that there was no snow on Christmas morning, but that was out of Pam and Paul's control...LOL! We will be staying here again in the future for sure.

Thank you Pam and Paul for welcoming in your house!
We enjoyed our stay a lot. Only one issue we encountered is slow internet and it must be due to heave rain. One of us was planning to work from the house and instead we played board games :).

A Great Snowy Get-Away For Our Group
Our party of 8 had a wonderful time making snowy memories at Pam & Paul's beautiful cabin! The cabin is well appointed, and the owners are very helpful and easy to communicate with. Would definitely recommend!

House was very welcoming and had all the amenities we could want.
We skied and snowboarded at Dodge Ridge and then enjoyed the house in the evenings. Holiday decorations were up and we felt very welcomed. The wi-fi was too slow to watch football, but that is our only complaint. Our vacation was very enjoyable.

Great option for a large family group
We were very pleased with our stay. We had a total of six adults, three teenagers and five little ones. The three large bedrooms were perfect. All had large beds and plenty of room. There were extra blankets and pillows and airbeds. The kitchen was large and filled with just about everything you need.
The outside deck was expansive and roomy, the family room was also well equipped with a large TV, sofa, gas fireplace, games and DVDs if needed.
The location is great for visits to Pinecreast lake, dodge ridge or the tubing park.
Parking was fine for three cars, any more than three and it would be a bit tight.
It is important to follow the directions the owner offers. There is no cell service. There is wifi in the cabin, but no ability to call outside of the local area with the included phone. The local area is very small so be prepared to have an internet phone app if you need to call outside of the very immediate area. The larger towns down the hill are considered long distance so the house phone will not work. The owner is very transparent about this, so make sure you are prepared.
In addition, the GPS/Google maps etc. will not work leaving the cabin so be prepared with a screen shot on your phone of the map to get back to the highway. The navigation should work on the way to the cabin, but leaving, that was not the case.
That being said, I would recommend this cabin.

Beautiful cabin
It was wonderful. The place was very accommodating and there was plenty of snow around the cabin for the children to play. The owners were readily available to communicate with. The only drawback is the steep driveway if you have a long vehicle. Its a sharp left turn to park. It may have been just fine if it wasn't snow season. Awesome kitchen, huge family dining table, comfy living area and 2.5 roomy bathrooms. It was so beautifully decorated for Christmas. We so appreciated the ambiance. Great family vacation for all of us.

Pinecrest
Great place for a quick get away with my sister and her husband. Cabin is well stocked and plenty of room if you do have a large family. The only thing that could be an issue for some are the steps to get inside. Otherwise a great place!

Beautiful mountain home
This cabin is beautiful and well appointed. As the listing said “just bring your clothes and food”. The only issues we had were maneuvering the steep driveway and making the sharp turn at the top into the parking area. Also, renters are responsible for getting the garbage cans down to the bottom of the steep driveway and then hauling the cans back up the hill after trash is picked up. We are an older couple and this proved slightly difficult.

Great place with lots of room
Nice quiet location with lots of tall trees. After climbing the stairs, you'll find a large balcony with views. Inside is a modern kitchen, and spacious living room. 1 bedroom is on this floor and 1 and 1/2 bathrooms. Upstairs is a loft full bath ant 2 more bedrooms.
A really nice place, close to other sites in the area.

Nice house, but has some communication/safety issues
As other reviews indicate, this is a very nice house, maintained well, good heating, beds are comfortable, and well stocked.
But we would avoid staying here in the future due to a couple of issues we encountered.
During our stay, we had a problem with the water suddenly stopping (turned out to be a water company issue) and in trying to resolve it realized that there is basically no easy way to contact the owners in case of emergency. There is no cell service at all and the owners have decided to disable non-local calling from the landline. The owner's number despite having the same area code as the property turns out is actually long distance (nowhere is this stated) so it can't be called. Rather than apologize, the owner argued with me when I brought this up and said that we should have driven to a store to buy a calling card to reach them. Given the high price of this house, I'm not sure why they don't enable calling ( or just simply provide a calling card).
Also the driveway is pretty steep/narrow and tricky to park in due to a steep ditch (which is really hard to see at night especially in bad weather). They really need to put in better lighting and perhaps a fence or markers to make it more safe.

Fabulous place
We all enjoyed a family holiday vacation. Many happy memories were made during our stay. The cabin is very well stocked, from the kitchen to the bedrooms, we had everything we needed for our 2 family holiday. One small suggestion would be to decrease the number of knives in the kitchen (a dozen +) and replace them with one high-quality set.
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning soon!

It doesn't get much better than Rifugio
This "cabin" is more like a house. Beautiful and exactly as shown in photos. When Paul and Pam say all you need to bring are your clothes and food - they truly mean it. We stayed 3 weeks and enjoyed every day.
You will get a workout climbing the stairs - but its worth it!!

Fantastic kitchen and deck!
The house was clean, modern and had plenty of seating. The kitchen was larger than most cabins and very functional. Beds were very comfortable. The huge feature of the house was the deck - we ate dinner out there every night. Owners called the first night to check in. Would recommend!

Weekend in Cold Springs
The cabin was just perfect for our family! 3 adult couples. It was very nice and accommodated us quite nicely. They do offer WiFi however we did not receive cell service- enjoyed the area and scenery instead of being on our phones. Driveway was a little bit challenging. The Picchi’s were so easy to work with and even called to check on us about our stay and welcomed us with a gift basket a great personal touch!!

Really comfy, really clean, well-stocked
An annual family camping/fishing trip to Pinecrest changed to a comfy cabin and fishing trip this year. We chose Rifugio based on the 5-star reviews, and they were spot on. The cabin was a comfortably tight fit for six men between the ages of 23 and 83. Those who needed beds got them (king size) and the rest snoozed on comfy couches and inflatable beds. The kitchen is super well-stocked and the entertainment options are abundant. Wifi and cable worked pretty well, though we had to clear the satellite dish of snow a couple of times (in mid May... Woohoo!). Pinecrest was beautiful as always, and Mia's Pizza is just a few minutes away. The driveway can present exit issues for challenged drivers so take your time the first couple of times. You'll get the hang of it. Awesome place to stay. The hosts checked in by phone to make sure all was well. And they left us a welcome basket with wine, cheese, and salami. Just book it.

Nice and Big house with everything you need! Love it and will definitely come back!
The house is very big with 3 bedrooms and 3 king size bed. There is also the sofa bed in the loft on the 2nd floor. The kitchen has everything that you could ever need. Pam and Paul also provided the complimentary welcome wine basket which was very impressive. Pam also sent us the map to get to the house in a bad snow condition. Paul called us upon we arrive to make sure we had everything we need. However, it's very hard to drive in winter time with a lot of snow on the street. The road was narrow and very slippery. Pam and Paul hired people to clear out the driveway for us to make sure we had the parking spots which fitted 3 cars perfectly. Thanks so much. We definitely come back!

Beautiful home in the mountains
We had a great time at this home! It's a great home base for heading up to Dodge Ridge, Leland for snow play or Pinecrest Lake. We had several adults and kids under 10 years old and there's enough room for everyone to have their own space. The kitchen is nice and well stocked and there's big dining room table where everyone can sit down for meals. We watched movies and living room fit us all. The beds are comfy and the linens are nice. I was really happy we upgraded this year from a "cabin" to this home. The owners, Pam and Paul, were very responsive to our questions. They're a really nice family and take good care of the property and their guests. Thanks Pam and Paul - We'll be back!

Rifugio di Montagna
Beautiful cabin/home and wonderful accommodations, exceeding our expectations. There even was a welcome basket with wine, salami, crackers, and a personal note from the owners waiting for us upon arrival. Later, the owners called to make sure we arrived and that everything was there that we needed. We were only a short 10 minute drive away from Pinecrest Lake, where we spent our days. We would definitely recommend this gorgeous cabin/home to others.

Really enjoyed our stay!
Our group included 6 adults and 2 children and there was plenty of room for all of us. The large dining table was a real plus so that we could all eat together, and the large living room with an expansive view was very comfortable to gather in at the end of the day. The air conditioning kept the home very cool, even on the warmest days.
The home is very cozy and lovingly decorated. There is a beautiful table with benches on the deck for eating outside. The home is also well appointed and I ended up bringing way too much with me.
There were a few normal maintenance issues that needed to be taken care of (burned out light bulbs and a switch that needed to be replaced in the master bath) but I let Paul know about them when he stopped by, and feel sure that he has taken care of the minor issues by now.
I found the owner's to be very warm and wonderful people who were very gracious to deal with and will definitely stay in one of their homes when we return to the area.

Comfortable house near amazing hiking
We spent a week at the Rifugio and were very happy there. The house is spacious and comfortable, making it easy to relax on the couch and on the deck. There is a fantastic grill, essentially a smoker with both a gas side and a charcoal side. We grilled and ate outside every night and most mornings. The kitchen is well equipped and the welcome letter makes it so clear what things you specifically don't need to bring. Pam is incredibly helpful and friendly, and she responds to any questions really quickly. We look forward to returning to the area, and we'd love to stay here again.

We booked this beautiful cabin for our family Christmas and it was definitely a hit! Nestled back off of an already secluded street, this getaway has all of the modern comforts of home without losing that mountain cabin feeling. It is equipped with all of the seating and place settings to accommodate a fairly large family gathering for Thanksgiving, Christmas or any other occasion. We loved the views from all of the rooms but especially the great room. It's high gabled ceiling and huge front windows are breathtaking. When we arrived there was a nice welcoming gift basket including a bottle of wine and a 10 foot Christmas tree that was already decorated. The entire cabin was decorated for the holidays and strung with lights both inside and out. If you are considering a vacation to this area, I highly recommend that you take a look at Rifugio Di Montagna. We will definitely be back!

Pam and Paul were so easy to work with. Pam was like chatting with a friend. Quick to respond to emails, provided lots of details/recommendations and even left a cute welcome basket tailored to the kids. We had specific need for one large room for kids to sit together and have leadership discussions, roomy kitchen for kids to cook in teams without others getting in the way and 3 baths. They were very accommodating and wiling to work with us. We had a full house of teens but were able to move about with ease. Cabin had everything. Shelves and drawers were all labeled to make it easy to put things away. We opted to clean cabin ourselves, list provided made it so easy to get it all done for next guest to arrive. The large dining table and seats along kitchen counter were perfect for our large group. There was a nice TV, lots of movies and internet was dial up but moved pretty quick. There were some pretty good books in master bedroom closet too. Neighborhood was very quiet and pretty. Pinecrest Lake was literally minutes away. It would have been nice to have lake within walking distance but this location was so nice it didn't matter. Kids went on hike around lake and had a great time. Store and shops had everything you would need if you forgot something. Perfect for when you discover no one packed the butter. lol The personal items/touches in cabin made us feel like we were at our own home. Make sure you read the history about the pictures on the walls, its on the clipboard on coat rack. We hope to make this our cabin every year.

A group of adults rented it for a week in August 2013. The first few days were wonderful with swimming and star gazing. The house is cozy and user friendly. Then came the forest fire and we had to leave early. Paul and Pam were super understanding and concerned about our safety. Some of us returned in October for a short "do over" and loved being there in the fall. Don't bring any kitchen products as it is well stocked with utensils and a great big grill on the deck.

We had a fabulous time! Home was clean and inviting with many homey touches. The kitchen had everything you could need to cook with and tons of space. The Counter seating was perfect for our kids.
Great selection of DVDs that pleased the group and there was plenty of table space for games and puzzles.
The king beds with soft bedding were especially welcome after a long day of skiing. The handy fold up cots were also great to have. Towels were fluffy and fresh and the bathrooms were immacculate. The heater was super warm and even with all the windows and high ceilings, we felt cozy.
We loved the close proximity to Dodge Ridge (about 20 minutes) and the kids loved exploring in the surrounding woods.
Other than a minor issue with the dryer, we couldn't have been more pleased with the home, the communication with the owners and the thoughtful touches Paul and Pam provided to make their home a wonderful getaway. Thank you!!!

Family of 5 with 3 young kids, we had such a great time at Rifugio. We came up on a Friday and the snow was coming down. We played outside in the snow on the side of the house, it the first time the kids got to see snow fall. The rest of the weekend it rained, but it was no problem for us. It was actually enjoyable to not leave, the cabin was so comfortable yet modern. It was nice to see the rain coming down and us being inside the nice cozy cabin. The living room has very high ceilings with a lot of windows which keeps the cabin light and airy. We played hide and seek, watched movies, played board games and Yahtzee on the very big and long dining room table. Kitchen is stocked with cooking, baking, etc equipment. There is a Keurig coffee maker as well as a regular coffee maker. The owners Paul and Pam were great to work with and they even left a gift basket waiting for us in the kitchen when we arrived. They have a garbage service, which is nice because we have been to a few cabins where we have to take all our garbage with us which is not fun. We have already booked the cabin again to enjoy with extended family, there is plenty of room for a bigger party. We are crossing our fingers that there is more snow. One thing to be aware of is the steep stair climb to get up to the cabin, which wasn't really an issue for us because we didn't go anywhere, but making a lot of trips up and down with stuff can be a "good work out". Not that big a deal though because majority of cabins have steep climbs because your in the mountains. Overall, our experience was amazing. Best cabin we've been to and can't wait to go back!!
