We spent two nights at Selva Verde Lodge during our Costa Rica trip. The lodge offers beautiful, spacious rooms with air conditioning, which were honestly the best accommodations we had during our trip. The property is well-maintained, featuring its own trails, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, and daily guided activities. The staff is incredibly friendly and always willing to help.
We found the lodge to be too busy to our liking, even during the low season, which detracted from the feeling of being in the wild nature. Photographic opportunities were limited, as the different perches could be set up in a more photo-friendly way. Additionally, the food was disappointing. Although advertised as local cuisine, it felt and tasted overly adapted to Western preferences.
It's important to note that our disappointment stems from our travel style, which favors adventure and rough wilderness experiences. We can easily see how this lodge would be perfect for older travelers, families with kids, or those who want to enjoy natural surroundings while benefiting from nearby facilities.
Overall, while Selva Verde Lodge didn't meet our expectations as adventure travelers (which the lodge cannot be blamed for as that is our own responsibility), it has many qualities that would appeal to others seeking a comfortable and nature-friendly stay.

Cool and comfortable rooms right in the midst of verdant forest. Water dispensers and recycling facilities dotted around. The bird table at breakfast was wonderful. A beautiful green snake crossed my path one day.
Could hear the busy road. Some of the hiking trails across from main hotel not maintained properly. Food not great particularly the Italian restaurant. The other one was ok except a bit soulless. Staff seemed a bit jaded compared to all the other places we stayed at. Had to wear a paper wristband for our bnb deal.

The property is set amongst a huge area of tropical rainforest. The rooms are in groups of 4 with a generous decking overlooking the gardens. They are beautifully designed and have fly wires enabling us to have windows open at night. Because of the gardens and jungle we saw many birds, even howler monkeys coming along the bridge to access a tree. The restaurant overlooks a nice patch of forest, fruit is provided so saw many birds there. The restaurant serves good, tasty food.
Presently construction is going on building 8 new rooms. As we were quite near it tended to be noisy and dusty.

the serene location and opportunities to see wildlife were amazing
there was a lot of noise from the road including loud trucks

Could not get access to the primal forest across the river without paying for a guide, then after having a guide, half of the tour was on the local side of the river before ever even crossing the bridge. This limited the time on the far side.

The ability to refill a water bottle at various locations throughout the property. Although it never rained while I was there the covered walkways are great. Staff was friendly. Rooms were spacious!
I wish there had been more activity at the bird feeders. Would like to have been able to order pizza at lunch and not just dinner.

has excellent breakfast
not many birds come to the feeder up close so we have to look for birds outside the hotel. birds are too far to photograph.

Very clean and comfortable.
You allways need a guide to go out on the trails i n the forest. This was a big disappointment. Why not open the trails during the day

set in its very own rain forest
the meal choice. buffet or pizza. and very short hours e.g. dinner was 6-8.
needless to say we went out to eat. fine for us as we had a car but not so easy for those without. The breakfast wasn’t good either - big tureens of mass catered food - we just had toast

A great place to stay for nature lovers.
They can't help it but the traffic noise from the highway is bad. Ask for room as close to the river and as far away from the highway as possible. Also we didn't like the weather--a lot of rain.

From the moment I arrived the staff were polite and very helpful. My room was spacious and clean and in a beautiful setting among the trees by the river.
The hotel manager was kind enough to send me an electronic copy of a bird field guide so that I could identify the numerous types found around the grounds. The hotel grounds are truly beautiful and well maintained with wildlife abounding in the various trails and paths. Designed so that visitors can walk around in the heaviest of rainfall without getting wet. There is a veranda at the restaurant where you can eat breakfast and watch the birds coming to feed on fruit put out by the staff.
Easily reached in two hours using the public buses from San Jose.
Breakfast was well prepared and very tasty, both continental and local dishes available.
Noise from traffic on the nearby road detracted a little from the night time experience of being in the jungle with all the strange insect and frog noises.

I liked the bungalows and covered walkways. The pool was rustic but a good size. The on site tours were excellent.
The buffet food was very average, particularly dinner. The Italian was better.

Comfort of the room.
We like to practice birdwatching and this hotel was highly recommended for the diversity and number of birds visible on the site.We were very disappointed by the fauna much less present than expected, even at the place where there is feeding.

the nature around is amazing!!! there two different self guided trail to do.
some room does not have AC . Luckily we ask if they had room with AC and we could change room thanks to the amazing receptionist.
the buffet dinner is 22 per person but propose only little choice and is not worthy of this price.
we did the bird watching tour, which is not that good, we learned the name of the bird that were so far away that we could only see through the binocular but he did not explained about their habits…we did another birdwatching tour in monteverde santa elena which was so much better!! as a plus the other guide even explain how to take a picture with our phone through the binoculars :)… so i would recommend to go since the place is amazing but maybe the nature walk in the primary forest only accessible with a guide could be better if you go to monteverde.

We like our room, the dschungel feeling and the pool.
The restaurant offers pizza in the evening. We would have wished local food options.

Rooms lovely and big and comfortable. Great forest for birdwatching and superb guided birdwalks. We saw both species of Macaws, Lovely Cotinga and Rufous-tailed Jacamar. The adjacent river is very nice and peaceful.
A very spreadout Lodge, a bit of a walk to the furtherest rooms (5 minutes however not really a burden!). At the time the meals werent really value for money, but perhaps they were still adjusting to welcoming tourists after Covid

River side location and limited walking trails.
great buffet breakfast. unlimited coffee and great fruit selection.
Most walking trails are only open for guided walks.

Hotel was exactly as described . An oasis in the rainforest. However what made our stay was the prompt help from staff when i twisted my ankle and they arranged for a doctor. There’s nothing more telling about a place than how they deal with things going wrong. So grateful for every they did .

A great location. Accommodation comfortable, a big clean room, in the middle of a green garden. Breakfast very good.
Private forest beyond Sarapiqui river accessible just a part of guided (and paid) tours.
I understand the reasons why but anyway - isn't possible to make a short trail on the opposite bank accessible to the lodge guests freely ?

The food, the pool, the covered walkways the feeders and the birds.
We were unlucky during our week there was a big excavator in the river in front of our room. It was moving rocks to protect the river banks to stop erosion but it was far from peaceful. It worked from 8:00-5:00 7 days a week!

- The hotel is inside a huge tropical forest
- Nice Italian restaurant
- Very nice tour organized in the hotel
- You can pay everything at the end and with credit card (without asking for 5% more)
- Bathroom is a bit old (but shower works well)

This is my second time staying at the property and definitely the best in the area. The property is located within a protected forest, so there are lots of hiking trails and you are completely surrounded my nature. The facilities are impeccable and comfortable, wifi is strong and the meals were amazing. I loved the pool and the guided nature hikes
Zero complaints!

Nice place big and the path were all covered with a simple roof to avoid the rain. Food was good, restaurant has a cute long balcony to look into the forest.
Wifi is very poor.
Low season is the time they are doing some renovations.
Many big size bugs visited the room.

Location and property is ideal for Wildlife and the River is Beautiful.
It was a-shame what this Pandemic has done to the CR economy especially the tourism sector.
Come to
