Morningside Cottage is located on the South-side of Little Platte Lake in the northern portion of Benzie County, Michigan about 3.5 miles from Lake Michigan and the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. The cottage is on a 1.5 acre, heavily wooded parcel with 200 ft. of frontage on Little Platte Lake. The mixed variety of trees including maple, beech, oak, hemlock and white pine provide a canopy fifty to sixty feet high and make the property very secluded and private. Morningside Cottage is 275 ft. from Deadstream Rd and accessed by our own two-track. The cottage overlooks the lake and surrounding forested hills. Morningside Cottage is 1200 sq. ft. in size and the first floor consists of a fully furnished kitchen, Berber carpeting throughout the rest of the cottage including the paneled dining room, living room (stone fireplace-hard wood included), small library/reading room, both the master bedroom (over-looking the lake) and 2nd bedroom with queen-sized beds, full bath and a half, and a washer/dryer. The downstairs consists of a large Berber carpeted recreational room with TV, wood stove, tables, and couches. You’ll find Morningside Cottage to be a very relaxing family-oriented cottage that is very private, quiet, and secluded. All the utensils you should need during your stay are found in our well-stocked kitchen. We provide bed linens, but you must bring your own towels. We are pet and smoke free. As you shut down for the evening, lying in bed, you may be entertained by our resident loons on the lake as their tremolo echoes across the lake, a symbol of the up-north mystique. During daylight you may see one or more of our resident Eagles soaring above the lake and also the numerous resident swans and if you’re really lucky you may have a group fly low over the cottage – awe-inspiring- and when you hear their wingbeats you realize just how big of an animal they really are. A person may say they are going to take a “stay-at-home-vacation” but what I have found is that all the troubles and cares as well as “things-to-do” don’t’ go away but when you leave home you do have that opportunity to relax and refresh.
A 400 sq. deck is attached to the front of Morningside Cottage overlooking Little Platte Lake and includes chairs, table, and gas grill, a great place to relax with your morning coffee, evening-meal, or mid-day relaxing/reading time. The lakefront includes a dock, boat hoist/13 ft. fishing boat with 4hp motor/oars/canoe/four kayaks/paddles/lifejackets, and a fire-pit stocked with wood for those evening fires/hot dogs and some-mores.
Little Platte Lake, sand and gravel in front of our cottage, is a shallow lake with blue-gills, perch, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and pike. The Little Platte Lake outlet, “Deadstream”, flows into the Platte River then into big Platte Lake and finally via the Platte River to Lake Michigan.
Our Northwestern Michigan Area was voted “Most Beautiful Place in America' by Good-Morning America in 2011. Traveling though the vast United States a person may witness many beautiful areas, but our area is surly one of our Nations highlights. Our property is approximately 40 minutes to Traverse City, 20 minutes to Interlochen National Music Camp, 2.5 hours from Grand Rapids, 4 hours from Detroit and 6 hours from Chicago.

We had a lovely week. Quiet, comfortable, cool breezes, and great information and support from Ray. We will be back!

Ray's cottage is an awesome traditional cottage. Cottage is clean and very well maintained. The stone fireplace and deck views were amazing. Cottage sits on a very nice large wood lot. Loved listening to the Loons in morning and evening. Excellent fishing lake, caught several good size large mouth bass and a few smallies. Great location and area to see all the local beautiful beaches, lakes and towns. I definitely recommend and want to return soon. Great place Ray!

A wonderful cottage perfect for the two of us! Comfortable and cozy and very welcoming! Owner was the highlight, spending time mapping out points of interest he thought we would enjoy and did we ever enjoy! Sitting on the deck overlooking Little Platte Lake watching the trumpeter swans was a bonus! We can’t wait to return to Morningside Cottage in the future!

A nice cabin on a beautiful peaceful lake. Lake Michigan just a few miles for day trips and sunsets. Sleeping bear dunes and wine country. We had a wonderful stay.

The Morningside Cottage is a little slice of heaven! The view from the deck is serenity at its best and the house has everything! We had fun kayaking, making s’mores by the fire pit, grilling and eating on the deck, playing ping pong and darts in the basement, watching our favorite show, reading books from the library etc. Not to mention that the location is super - down the street is miles of beach on Lake Michigan, and 20 minutes North we hiked and explored Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. Ray the host is the best! He took time when we arrived to go over a map of the area and give us all the ins and outs and how to get to everything. So glad we found Morningside Cottage and will be back next year as there is more to explore and the area is just gorgeous and staying at the Morningside cottage was wonderful!

The cottage is wonderful. Great location. It has everything you need and the owner was very helpful in making sure my stay was enjoyable. I will definitely rent again.

Host is very friendly with an extensive knowledge of the area. Provided great hiking tips

Just close enough to local establishments to scratch the wanderlust itch yet remote enough to loose yourself in nature. Ray’s little Morningside Cottage was a quaint and accurately described place to stay. Reasonably priced and super clean it met the needs of our small group for a place to lay our heads, shower, and leave the city behind. As mentioned in other reviews the cottage is somewhat dated, however it has all the basics and was very clean and tidy. You won’t find a better place to stay in this county for the price!

We absolutely love Michigan and especially this time of year. No one is up here yet and we had the entire area to ourselves. The house was just the icing on the cake. What a beautiful place and the owner was awesome! He spent a solid hour with us going over the ins and outs and then showing us in a map all the cool spots. Trails abound in the area and we got several. We loved it so much that we cannot wait to go back next spring!!

My friend and I stayed here. Loved the location to different hikes and ski resorts. Would stay here again.

We enjoyed our stay very much. The wood burning fireplace and the view of the lake were great. Ray, the host, was very helpful in suggesting places to go as well as providing us with a detailed map of the area.

Owner was very informative, loved the view, loved the lake for kayaking, short drive to sandy beach of Lake Michigan. Cottage was dated, yet peaceful. We would stay again,

Close to our points of interest. Owner was very helpful in pointing out what to see. Property had nice amenities on quiet fishing lake. Building is old and smelled of mildew.

The owner Ray is very helpful. Property is private with a great view of the lake from the deck and shoreline. Saw lots of wildlife around the lake. Deer, loons, swans, and bald eagles to name a few. Lots of bass fishing too. The basement gameroom is a nice perk. We highly recommend this property!

We had an amazing time at Morningside cabin! Beautiful location and we can't wait to go back again. Ray is very knowledgeable and made sure everything was covered. The cabin was spotless. Thanks for everything!

Cute lake cottage with gorgeous views of the sunrise over the lake from the deck. It was the perfect location to explore Sleeping Bear Dunes and close to Frankfort where we kept our boat to salmon fish on Lake Michigan. Quiet lake with fantastic bluegill fishing and very little boat traffic. Looking forward to staying again! The host was very helpful and attentive!

One night we hear a owl.
Thank you Ray for a enjoyable week.

Ray, the Host, is so thoughtful and wants to help make your stay memorable. He showed us some beaches on Lake Michigan and recommended places to eat and wineries. He was spot-on with all his recommendations.
The cottage has everything you could need except for towels! That is a long list of things you have at your disposal. It is quiet and has a view/access to Little Platte Lake.
My husband and I hope to stay here again next year.
Thanks, Ray!

Wow! This is it! We have stayed at many houses and different locations in northwest Michigan, but this one was by FAR the best! Truly a hidden GEM on beautiful Little Platte Lake. Ray was AMAZING! So welcoming and helpful. He left us a map with all the "hidden" locations to explore—the type of thing only locals would know. We cannot wait to get back to Morningside Cottage! Ray, thank you so much for opening your home up to our family. Happy New Year! The Stones

This site excels at being the “right” mix of relaxation matched w a beautiful setting along w having a lot of other outside activities if you chose. PM is beyond kind & knowledgeable. Great nearby eateries and beaches. The lake itself is beautiful…keep an eye out for the bald eagle. We would highly recommend this location & look forward to returning.

Beautiful view from awesome deck overlooking Platte Lake. Interior could use some updating but had everything we wanted and more!! Great stay!
4.9
The property was exactly as shown and described. What is not said in the description is how helpful Ray is right from the start. We have rented many properties from VRBO and have never had a more thorough briefing on all of the opportunities in the area of the things we like to do. Ray answered every question and offered a variety of options for our week stay. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the dunes area with its many miles of trails, beautiful beaches, and pristine lakes. Thanks to Ray for making out time so enjoyable.

Had a great stay at Morningside! Ray is the absolute definition of a super-host. Property is very private and peaceful. All the amenities you need and more. A million things to do in this area. Highly recommended. Thanks Ray!

No ac but because cottage is located in wooded area, interior stayed cooler than outside temps. Plenty of room for 3 families. Large sofas upstairs and in basement. All dune areas a shirt drive away. I will stay again.

The cottage is a comfortable cottage in a great location. It has a beautiful view and lots of privacy. We particularly enjoyed the wonderful stone fireplace at night as we had some cool days during our stay. Ray was a wonderful host, giving us lots of information about things in the area that only a native knows. It was a wonderful week.

This is a very nice older rental overlooking the lake.Great deck and firepit area.Owner was very nice, helpful and knowledgable about the area.We really enjoyed our stay.

Got away for the long weekend with the husband and kids. The property was in a great location and was a gorgeous piece of property. We were able to get out and go sledding at the dunes and go snowshoeing. We all loved the rec room in the basement and the stone fireplace upstairs. Great little getaway for quality family time and great memories.
4.9
A beautiful location - quiet, nestled back in the woods, great views of the lake. Enjoyed having a real fireplace. Spacious place and windows overlooking the lake. Owner was very responsive and helpful. A few things I would change....the mattresses aren't very comfortable & while we do appreciate the rustic look, some of the rooms could be updated (ie older carpeting in the bathroom, kitchen, furniture, etc).

My new husband and I have stayed at Morningside several times and knew it was the perfect place to start our married life together. Mr. Antel really makes you feel as though Morningside is YOUR place and feel like a native northern Michigander. There is much to do in the area even as the weather gets chilly. Nightly fires in the fireplace help warm you up!! I cannot recommend Morningside enough!!
