Hotel staff was vey friendly and accommodating to our requests during our stay. In particular. Catia is a gem! She assisted us with a late night check-in (our plane was 1 and 1/2 hours late in arriving to Funchal), taxis when the local Bolt service was completely booked and information about how soon we needed to get to the ferry to go to Porto Santo along with a breakfast box that morning (before the Melia breakfast buffet would be open).
We had some difficulty understanding the thermostat in our room and how to regulate the temperature.

Location of hotel was good - near the ocean.
The room was a good size, facilities were great.
I had a massage, was was great. The spa had plenty to offer, which I made the most of.
The bed wasn't as comfortable as I would have expected.
Towels for the pool need to be collected from the main reception, which means going from your room, to reception then to another floor, where the pool is - it would be much easier if towels could be collected from the pool area.
I found a member of staff who worked in the pool bar a little rude. She answered the phone twice as I was trying to pay. Then asked if I has any change, because she didn't have enough change the till. She didn't tell me how much my item was. For a hotel of this standard, I would have expected for some more professionalism.
