About this cottage rental
Farlands Cottage in the heart of the Peak District is a great place to stay at all times of the year. It is close to the village of Hayfield, and in a stunning location - the BBC series 'The Village' was filmed around here. It can be a quiet atmospheric retreat – it has a log fire, and is well-equipped (the wifi has recently been changed (Aug 2018) and now works perfectly.) Equally, there is always lots to do and see. The Cottage is the left-hand wing of the impressive 19th century Farlands House. It is comfortable and homely; ideal for recovering from a hard day in the outdoors, or from life in general! Enjoy eggs and honey from the smallholding, and relax with a BBQ, or in front of the log fire in the living room.
We can now offer:-
1. accompanied walks - if you want some help with route-finding, carrying your gear or just want a gentle commentary on the local landscape.
2. smallholding tours - 2 tours available: Highlights (1 hour) and the Full Tour (2 hours)
3. The Green tour (new!) - see and discuss in detail the biomass boiler (wood pellets), the solar panels, the water system, energy efficiency and recycling. All based on a greener, more sustainable way of life.
If you are looking to change the way you live, then this tour may gave you some ideas.
Free range eggs are available to buy along with Farlands comb honey.

James is the perfect host - very friendly and always available if needed, but in no way intrusive. The property is wonderfully well-located, both in terms of access to local pubs and shops, and also for walking and sight-seeing in the Peak District. It was great to be able to undertake so many fabulous walks either directly from the house or starting very near to it. The property was the perfect size for us and was well-equipped, although some features were a little dated. I never thought we could possibly need the heating in July, but the solid structure of the house meant that it was a bit cold on arrival and we had to resort to it.

I enjoyed my short stay in Farlands Cottage very much. It was rainy when I arrived, but in the evening I was able to go for a long walk up onto the beautiful ridge above the reservoir. The next day on a longer hike up to the Pennine Way the sun came out, shining on the reservoir, Kinder Scout and other ridges and peaks all around. This is the perfect location for hiking in the area, and I recommend it.

James was very responsive to our messages and accommodating of our needs. The property, although a little outdated, is wonderfully situated for walking from the doorstep and near the local pub which is always a bonus!!

Clean, tidy and a superb quiet location with the friendly owner next door.
We were there for 5 days for family reasons, but if you are into walking/hiking, this location will be absolutely perfect.

Lovely Spot
Great location, with walks from the door meaning you’re immediately ‘away from it’ as soon as you step out of the door.
Helpful host and comfortable accommodation.

Great holiday
Fantastic location, amazing view. Very quiet place, a lot of routs to walk. We didn't drive at all. The cottage is in really good condition (new kitchen and bathroom). Enough space for kids to run around. James and Sarah are lovely hosts!

A pretty location, excellent access to great walking, very peaceful.
The cottage is well situated for access to the peaks and is quiet and peaceful. The owner is pleasant and friendly and the cottage was warm and the beds comfortable. It is small however, with a downstairs bathroom and potentially risky open tread staircase. The kitchen and bathroom are modern but generally the decor is dated. The kitchen was not well equipped, eg. the only frying pan was a badly damaged Teflon that had seen better days and the crockery and cutlery could do with an update. Compared to other properties this carries a high price tag for the overall quality of presentation and provision of household items.

Beautiful Cottage, Amazing location!!
I stayed here with my mum and 2 daughters and we all absolutely loved it! The cottage was gorgeous and perfect and exactly what we all needed. There are a number of beautiful walks straight from the door step, so you’re not having to drive and park up anywhere. The location is absolutely stunning and so peaceful. It’s just what we needed! We only stayed 2 nights, but we could’ve easily stayed for a week and still had stuff to do. James is lovely and very helpful. On the second day, we booked the tour around his small holding - this was extremely interesting and informative. The only downside was that there were not any bees to see in the hive which would have been better to know before the tour, as my 7 yo was looking forward to that bit the most! Overall we all had a lab amazing time and felt completely relaxed after our stay at Farlands Cottage. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to escape the madness of everyday life and just take some time out to recharge their batteries.

Loved this place. Full of character. Great location for hiking - we never used the car all week. James could not have been more helpful. Lovely terrace outside for post hike cup of tea. Will return.

The views
The views and grounds were beautiful and well looked after. We were greeted with a warm welcome and shown around , had a bottle of milk waiting for us in the fridge which is always helpful when you do not know the area.
The beds and the sofas were uncomfortable for us but that’s personal taste .

Excellent Property
We loved this property. Unfortunately the weather didn't work in our favour and we didn't get to explore as much as we would have liked. The property is exceptionally clean and has everything you need. James is very welcoming and on hand to help if you have any queries. We had booked a tour at the Speedwell Cavern, but this was also unfortunately cancelled.
On the one night we did stay we ate at the local Sportsmans Pub. Food is good and the team are very welcoming. Would highly recommend this property.

Perfect location for a weekend in the Peak District
A lovely place to stay. It was our favourite type of holiday - great walking from the house, and a choice of pubs in the evening, also just a short walk away. Great host.

Wonderful stay in a beautiful location
Farlands cottage was set in the perfect spot for us to attend a beautiful wedding at Upper House. We were able to enjoy amazing walks from the doorstep of the cottage. The cottage is very quirky and is in a beautiful location. The Italian in hayfield colosseo served superb food. Chatsworth house isn't too far to travel too either which is a great place to visit. James the owner and his wife were always on hand to answer any of our questions and to guide us in the right direction for all the walks.
Overall we had a wonderful long weekend and hope to return one day in the future.

The Joy of Farlands
We had a lovely stay at Farlands and James Ellson was an attentive but unobtrusive host. The location is truly stunning with breathtaking scenery very close by and the cottage is comfortable and well equipped.
We had an interesting tour around James's smallholding and were able to buy wonderful honey, marmalade and eggs. We would highly recommend Farlands and we hope to be back for another visit soon.

Great little cottage, perfect for walks
We really enjoyed our stay here. Communication from James before we arrived was very good, the cottage was just as described.
The cottage is a great base for walks up and around Kinder Scout, we managed to scale it twice.
Our children enjoyed feeding and looking after the chickens.
The cottage was nice and warm and blissfully quiet at night, apart from the odd owl !
Would recommend this cottage to anyone looking to get away from it all and enjoy the beautiful Peak district (though if you do need to stay in touch with civilisation the newly updated wifi works perfectly)
Many thanks to James, we’d love to come back.

Excellent base for walking
There are so many walks around here that we did not use the car all week.

Beautiful location . Walks from the doorstep.
Very warm and cosy with an open fire and plenty of hot water. A well equipped kitchen . Fresh eggs and 'homemade' honey for sale which was delicious. Only stayed 2 nights but would have loved to stay longer. Great local pub 15 mins walk away (but definitely need a torch in the dark evenings and walking boots/shoes). James has lots of offer if you want it from guided tours of the property and guided walks. Unfortunately we didn't have the time to do this .

Comfortable cottage in great location
We enjoyed our two night stay in this stunning Peak district location. Cottage had everything we needed. particularly liked the log fire. We are happy to recommend this property and will stay here again in the future.

Well situated for hiking and touring Peak District destinations
Farlands is excellently situated for using the area walking trails, and an excellent pub down the road. Peak District destinations like Peveril Castle, the village of Eyam, and others are well less than an hour drive. Ample parking and well equipped kitchen. Guest house itself is full of character and owner was able to provide honey, eggs and apples produced at the property.

cosy and comfortable
The closest you can get to Kinder with a bed! If you like walking then take advantage of this location. No need to drive to a car park, just walk out the front door and you are right at the base of the Kinder reservoir. James is a friendly host and the cottage has everything you need. It is a little dated, but this is not important to us. Although it is a small cottage, the outdoor space provides an extension to the living room... a fantastic garden to sit in the sun with a glass of wine and admire the scenery. We stayed with our two boys who loved the great big lawn and the chickens. The beds were warm and really comfy. We will definitely be staying again, and recommending the property to friends and family.

Comfortable base in stunning location
We booked the cottage as we were visiting family in the Greater Manchester area.It proved to be a very peaceful location(apart from the overhead aircraft!) and a great base from which to venture out on short or longer walks. The terrace at the front is pleasantly sunny to sit out on.We would definitely consider returning in the future.

A Great Getaway to Recharge, Enjoy Nature and Explore
Having found my way from Manchester Airport to Farlands Cottage late in the afternoon, I was warmly greeted by James who was awaiting my arrival and who showed me the lay of the land. I enjoyed the first snowfall of the winter and the beauty of Kinder Scout and the surrounding hills and walked into Hayfield to enjoy lunch at the Royal Hotel. The location of Farlands is perfect for a quiet, relaxing break and the fire, burning each evening, added to the serenity of the cottage. The cottage is well-kept, spacious and has fabulous views from each room. It is great for a single person or a family. The walking paths are right there at the front door and even in November are wonderful to explore. The river running down at the bottom of the garden adds to the peacefulness of the environment. The location is ideal for getting into Manchester, exploring the surrounding area in towns and villages such as Castleton and Buxton and is close to the caves and stone circles. So much to do and not enough time. James and Sarah's homestead is truly a magical place and one to which I will definitely be returning.
