About this cottage rental
Set in its own conservation area in Barton, one of the historic villages that make up the popular seaside town of Torquay, South Devon; Sweet Rose barn is a beautiful, lovingly restored cottage. Tucked away behind the 15th Century Devon longhouse, ‘The Old Manor Farmhouse’, this one bedroom, one bathroom barn is the perfect couples retreat. Dogs and infants are welcome.
Together with Honeysuckle (2 bedrooms) and Threshing Barn (4 bedrooms), the 3 properties form the multi-award winning ’Pilgrims Rest Cottages’, that have been welcoming guests since 2009. Awards include ‘Most Pet Friendly’ accommodation.
With countryside to the north, the coast to the east and all that Torquay, The English Riviera, and its nearby surroundings have to offer, previous guests have found it to be an ideal location for their stay – with the local shops, a stroll away, an added bonus. Martin and Kim (the owners) personal information folders, revealing countless gems in the area (walks, eateries, pubs, attractions, beaches…), enhance guests’ stays further.
Sweet Rose is all about relaxing and unwinding. As you enter this lovingly restored cottage, you will find everything you need for a cosy space for two people. The open plan ground floor layout includes a sofa, dining table and kitchen area, while spiral stairs take you upstairs to the bedroom where you will find a lovely king size bed, gorgeous roll top bath to enjoy a luxuriating soak with a glass of wine or champagne and separate toilet area.
Parking and Property
From your allocated, off lane, parking for 1 car (with extra parking available on the lane alongside Pilgrims Rest), you will walk down a path through two white picket gates into the barns’ courtyard with white bistro tables and chairs, and ornate plant pots. Sweet Rose is the stand-alone cottage on your left with the entrance just around the corner.
Upon entering the property, you will be met with a cosy open plan lounge / dining room and kitchen; all decorated in warm colours, exposed beams, and oak pillars.
Up a set of historical, newel, spiral stairs, you will discover the open plan bedroom and roll top bath, set into the exposed beams of this well-lit vaulted bedroom with windows overlooking the garden.

Pilgrims Pooches
Dogs are an important part of Pilgrims Rest Cottages and are very welcome with Pilgrims Rest Cottages an historical winner of the best dog friendly business on the English Riviera and South Devon.
The owners have dogs themselves, and over the years were annoyed at large extra for their dogs. They have, over the last 14 years, worked on a ‘Dog Free’ policy, asking owners to follow some basic rules, which to date have been fine with guests and enabling that policy to continue.
The Pilgrims Pooch rules include:
- Not letting your dog go upstairs in the bedroom.
- Not letting you dog go on any furniture (if dog throws are brought, there can be
exceptions, but must be agreed at booking)
- Not leaving your dog home alone unless by prior agreement and discussion at
booking (the owners know that many dogs are fine on their own, and allow some
leeway here)
- Do not leave their dog to roam alone outside; being respectful of others who may be
staying at Pilgrims Rest
- Finally, as always pet owners are required to clean up after their pets and dispose of
pet mess in the bins provided in the car park.
- We do require a £50 refundable pet deposit which is refunded within 7 days after
departure with the approval of the cleaning team.
- Vacuum cleaners are provided to help, in each property.

The Sweet Rose is quite neat very small downstairs but a lovely bedroom, unusual to have bath there and I was a bit concerned that my wife could navigate the stairs as she has Parkinson’s but she was absolutely fine. The dog loved the garden and meeting the other dogs in the neighbouring cottages. We really enjoyed the visit and would recommend the cottages and the Barton area.

Sweet Rose Cottage was very clean and pleasant and as described in the details online. It was nice to be greeted with a bottle of wine and snacks, milk coffee tea and sugar enabled us to have a drink on arrival, even better as we arrived around 9pm after visiting family earlier. (even our dogs had snacks provided).

Cottage was fully equiped , dog friendly , and contained everything you would need for your stay . Off street parking , a bonus in Torquay . Beautiful , secure gardens that give you plenty of options to find the sun , shade or a quiet place . Would stay again , and the 3 cottages together would be an ideal option for larger groups . Found the property a lot smaller than it appeared to be on the photos, a little bit tired looking, could do with sprucing up.

Cody getaway for 2
Very easy to rent.
Martin was in contact with us from day 1 of booking and welcomed us when we arrived. There were complimentary drinks for us as well as milk so could have a cup of tea. Gave us lots of advice about walks. It was a very good base and close to shops and walks straight from the door. Really enjoyed our stay and people we met Reg in the wild goose pub in Combeinteignhead and the thatched tavern nearby were very hospitable.

Dear Martin and Kim, We wanted to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for a wonderful stay in picturesque Torquay at Sweet Rose Cottage. We were so happy that the cottage was absolutely gleaming and miraculously spotless (well done cleaning team!) when we arrived and there was even the most amazing little welcome gift awaiting us when we arrived! One of our favourite features of this beautiful 500 year old property was the slip bath that stood elegantly in the bedroom; not only did it add character and charm to the property, but it also gave Sweet Rose Cottage wow factor. The cottage also came equipped with everything you could imagine and we felt like we were in a luxury villa, from the inside! True bliss!Torquay is a beautiful place and there's lots to do in the nearby towns, including the little town of Brixham with its colourful houses set onto the clifftops. With all the nearby coastlines and lovely country walks, there is plenty to do.So thanks once again Martin and Kim for our marvellous break to recharge our batteries! We'd certainly recommend this stunning property to anyone and everyone! Bravo!

A lovely cottage in an amazing location
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Sweet Rose cottage. Martin and Kim were wonderful hosts who left booklets of incredible advice on local places worth visiting and also answered any queries/ sorted any concerns we had very swiftly. They went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our stay, with goodies and all the tea and coffee we could ask for on arrival. The kitchen was also very well equipped, it was like being in a home away from home. We would definitely recommend Sweet Rose Cottage to family and friends, it's in a brilliant location for a relaxing holiday away.

Go on...stay at Martin and Kim's place...you'll love it!!!
...we stayed in 'Sweet Rose' ...which is just perfect for a couple. The cottage is delightful...(but there are two larger properties if there are more of you) Our little dog Crumpet was welcomed with her own letter and a bag of treats; making us feel very at ease...('Dog Friendly' isn't always actually that friendly). So much information provided by our hosts about the history of the cottages and about dining, transport, attractions etc. in the surrounding area...so we didn't have to waste a minute of our precious week working stuff out. We are non drivers, the location couldn't have been better...bus stop, baker's, supermarket all around the corner...and the best fish and chips we've ever eaten. Bath in the bedroom feels a little bit naughty...which can only be a good thing. Gardens are lovely and secure...and importantly in the current climate, the attention to Covid precautions was thorough, but unobtrusive. We really couldn't recommend this cracking little spot more highly. We will come back.

Very cosy and relaxing
We had a wonderful stay at Sweet Rose cottage at Pilgrims Rest Cottages. It was our first break away since the Covid lockdown restrictions had been eased and Martin was very helpful in letting us know the extra cleanliness measures taken. We received a very warm welcome from the hosts and whilst having our privacy, Martin was very helpful with providing tips and recommendations. The cottage is situated in a lovely area with access to a number of local beaches in South Devon. It was very clean and has a range of facilities. We will definitely recommend to family and friends. Thank you!
