Wonderful place, close to the city centre but also to several hikes! Wonderful food - I asked for vegan food and they really delivered!
All was great!
4.7
great quiet location just a few minutes walk from the city center, delicious breakfast, historic atmosphere in the house, view from the room into the Gasteinertal
nothing to complain, I only missed a proper hotel bar and pool or steam bath
4.7
Villa Excelsior was just wonderful, with its atmosphere, interior design, views and surroundings - and not at least the very helpful, funny and friendly owners&staff. The most charming, welcoming and cosy hotel we have stayed in during our 20 winters in the Alps.
4.7
Superb breakfast and dinner, with very kind staff at the restaurant. Our room had a big terrace with nice view to the mountains. The hiking trails were also fantastic. An idyllic winter holiday

We were super impressed by our stay ! The staff were very kind and helpful. We received recommendations for a scenic nearby hike and the hotel offers a discount for the thermal spa in the center, which was super nice! We also were picked up directly from the train station. Additionally, the room was comfortable and clean, and the whole hotel gets you into a classy, antique feeling! It made our trip :)

Exceptional service, great price/quality ratio.

Villa Excelsior exceeded our expectations with its unique atmosphere and unusually friendly and polite staff. Breakfast and dinner were delicious, the room was quiet with a great view over the valley. Nearby Kaiser Wilhelm promenade with cafees and art galleries. We even got an early breakfast and tranportation to trainstation before 08 a.m.

Cristoph and his staff was amazing, and the hotel and its decorations was beautiful. Would highly recommend this hotel!

An old, beautiful building. The hotel is original and I have never visited one like it before. This visit was an experience in itself and will surely surprise you. I recommend to try.
The old beds creaked when you turned while sleeping. We woke up to it sometimes.
4.7
The personal service was exceptional. We felt realy cared for and you can tell the owner loves his place and what he does.
And the wiew from our room was magical.
I would love for the room to have one mattress on the bed instead of two on the dubblebed so there is no gap in the middle.

Stay at Villa Excelsior allows you to experience the atmosphere of a mountain resort from belle epoque with all modern comforts (three different saunas, outdoor pool, newly renovated bathrooms). Christof, the owner, and his staff and family are friendly and helpful, breakfasts are amazing. We loved how much attention is paid to little details, like engraved coffee pots and beautiful wooden furniture.
The wi-fi could be better.

This hotel is a true gem. The interior has retained the opulence from 100 years ago, with virtually all the furniture / fixtures and fittings from the era. Even the coffee pots at breakfast were solid silver! Added to this were fantastic staff who worked really hard and gave an authentic experience. The food was high quality and I really enjoyed the 4 course evening dinners. Fantastic value for money.
Very little. The only possible drawback is the location, though a shuttle bus is provided every 15 minutes to the ski lifts. Otherwise its a 10 minute walk into town.

Food was excellent.
Breakfast was plentiful with a wide choice.
tables are waiter service.
We had same waiter throughout -Tomislav. He was attentive, friendly and receptive to our needs/wants.
Dinner was exceptional. There was a choice each morning of what we would like that evening. Always a vegetarian option . Meal was 3 course with a fresh salad to accompany main course.
After dinner guest tend to drift to the bar area which is cozy with comfortable chairs tables and lots of games/cards for guest to play
Christof looks after all his guests very well and pays personal interest and attention to all his guests making them feel welcome and important. Nothing was too much trouble for him. He fetched and took us to the train station when we arrived and left
The whole hotel is beautifully decorated in original style with artefacts to match
Somehow you are made to feel very relaxed and at home whilst being well looked after.
I haven’t even mentioned the spa area which offers a Finnish Sauna, Bio Sauna and a 60C one .
Location gave lovely views down the valley.
There is a direct footpath into town which takes 10-15 mins to walk to centre of town. For those that don’t like walking there’s a shuttle bus.
Can’t really think of anything…..
Be aware there is little option of English speaking TV channels - my husband wanted to watch 6 nations Rugby - this was easily overcome by using a VPN and our lap top though so not really a problem.
I do like a kettle in my room for a night time cuppa and one first thing in bed. But although they aren’t routinely in rooms Christof was happy to give us one - so again not a problem

Christoph, the host, wonderful, helpful - all in a good and kind atmosphere and especially nice and personal. The food was good and tasty.

My stay in this belle epoque villa was the best in Austria! The staff was outstanding, the food as well (highly recommend having half-board), and the furniture and ambiance were refreshingly old-fashioned (the villa's motto). The shuttle to/from the train station/ski area was very useful. Moreover, unlike most ski resorts (which offer mainly ski), there is so much more to do in Bad Gastein. I will gladly be back in Villa Excelsior and Bad Gastein!

perfect old-style hotel with modern infrastructure, functional shuttle to Stubnerkogel and back, very nice though professional staff everywhere in the hotel, new sauna area with enough space for everyone and Bad Gastein as such...
alles war in Ordnung.

The fin de siecle style of the house, the fantastic staff and excellent wellness comfort for a reasonable price.

We came for 4 nights over Christmas and had a wonderful break in this hotel which is full of charm and history. The service from all the staff, is exceptional. We had comfortable, clean rooms which were decorated in a traditional way with lovely old furniture. The shower was powerful with plenty of hot water and the duvets were comfortable and warm. We had a great view of the valley.
There is a sweet bar area with a lovely chess table. Loved the breakfast - plenty of choice both hot and cold and I especially liked the delicious Bircher Meusli. As you choose what you want the night before, there isn't the wastage of a breakfast buffet. The 4 course evening meals were really good traditional food with equally good vegetarian options. There is not much choice but this makes it easy.
We loved the skiing and the free shuttle to and from the slopes was a great bonus. We had a Hot Spring bath after skiing in what looked like a 1950's bathroom - fantastic - definitely felt better after :). Nothing was too much for Christof who runs the hotel. On our last day our daughter had a big bruise after a ski fall and Christof gave her some arnica schnapps which his mother had made. She put it on the bruise (this schnapps is not for drinking) and felt much better.
I'd highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a wonderful break in a great value hotel full of character. It is like stepping back in time in the best way. If you are looking for a perfect modern hotel with neutral decor and big TVs, this is not for you.

Friendly Service, good choice of menu (vegetarian offer), Breakfast Staff went out of their way to provide Turkey Ham instead of usual pork-ham. Great evening menu. Superb massage organised right there!
I am not a fan of filter coffee, especially at breakfast.
4.7
Very kind owner and staff, płace with the unusual history (dr Freud spent there holidays for several years), unique and historic equipment, nice pool, great dinners and position in beautiful Bad Gastein.
Everything was great.

The place itself is very nice, but it is not so simple to reach it by car (and the narrow road near hotel would need a repair). There are fantastic views from windows, a little pool outside of the hotel is an advantage. There is about 10 min to the city center. (Unfortunately there is a major reconstruction of a few buildings in the centre of Bad Gastein right now, and it will take place to the end 2023 resp. 2024.)
Personnel in the reception and kitchen were perfect. You can opt dinner only from two main courses - meat or vegetarian dish. The hotel building itself is over 100 years old, a bit fusty, but well-maintained, all facilities are OK. However, it cannot gain better than 3 stars without a major refurbishment. And a little thing in the end - we were surprised that in such old-fashioned settings there was not any music instrument, especially piano, so maybe it can be an inspiration for the keepers (owners), to organize some piano evenings or so...

Breakfast more than enough and good value. Dinner was excellent, 4 course, starting with a fresh salad, very tastefull, good quality. Very pleasent waiters, and a lot of fun.
It's not really important, but it would be nice if the music wasn't exactly the same every evening. I suggest a playlist with easy jazz or easy classical music.

Beautiful place, lovely owner

Very attentive service. Good food. Location is really nice - easy access to paths into the mountains. Bad Gastein is a really interesting town!
The shower sometimes unexpectedly became boiling hot, so a relaxed shower was not possible. The mattress was really hard and some of the furniture quite outdated. But then again, that's also the charm of the hotel.
