The staff were lovely and helpful
It’s decor could do with modernising in the room but you get what you pay for and you can’t really complain

The hotel is situated in a very pretty location. The staff were friendly and helpful, fitting us in for dinner even though they were full. The food was good and very reasonably priced. There was a nice woodland walk to take the dogs.
Although there was a lift it was a little antiquated. It was a self service breakfast with only one choice of eggs, which made things awkward when looking after two dogs whilst having to eat in the lounge.

Lovely old building great Victorian architecture. The room was nice and spacious facilities good but bed was very uncomfortable dud not sleep at all husband the same Mattress can do with an update. We had a meal in restaurant food basic no great choice but was edible. All in all good value for money. Shame about the mattress
As above the mattress needs replacing. And more choice on menu there was pork fish or veg curry I don’t eat any of these

Beautiful building in lovely setting
Inexperienced and unhelpful staff, this is a hotel very must catering for coach party's. Private guests are not looked after and breakfast is not the best. No Scottish beer on tap at the bar. New owners in April 2024 would give this place a wide berth until end of the year at least to give them time to improve would rate this at the moment as a 1* B&B in my opinion.

The main hall/reception area and the various quiet rooms in the main part of the ground floor were very nice spaces, well maintained and very grand.
As seems to be the case with so many grand old hotels it was a great shame that, although the main part of the hotel was grand and imposing, clean and tidy, the rooms themselves have been left to deteriorate over the decades.
I'm not overly fussy about accommodation and dont look for perfection, but there was something forlorn and a bit sad about our room. The old fire place had been boarded over, the ceiling lowered, which cut a decent chunk off the lovely old sash windows. The taps were wonky, the bath a bit mouldy, the toilet cistern lid had been broken in half and glued back together, the mirror chipped. Peeling textured wall paper, worn and slightly grubby carpets and a vague smell of foostyness. The furniture looked like it had been fished out of a second hand shop. The beds were comfortable though. This could be a real gem of a hotel if only they invested wisely in a tasteful interior. After all, it doesn't really matter what the rest of the hotel is like, it's the room you've paid for.

The staff and the food were great. It was very dog friendly and they were lovely to me and my dog.
The room was a bit tired

The property is a grand building. With good communal rooms.
The location of the property is great with everything you need on the door step.
The rooms had stained walls, it was just a bit grubby. The bed was clean and the sheets.

Excellent breakfast. Very welcoming staff. Great pint of Guinness.
Dinner was fairly awful and certainly not worth £20 per head extra. Rushed back as kitchen closed at 8 pm and then let down by choice and quality of main course fare.

Location of hotel was lovely
Poor evening menu ended up going elsewhere to eat . But do understand you can’t please everyone . My biggest complaint is my bed was broken I would expect if your paying £117 for a room this should’ve of not happened surely who ever does the rooms would of noticed this when making it up as a result a relaxing night away was ruined

The location was perfect and the staff very helpful.
This hotel would have been wonderful in its heyday. It feels very tired but one can see great potential which will need much funding.
The breakfast was terrible. I could not eat mine.

Would recommend upgrading to a superior room. Our room was spacious and overlooked the front of the hotel with lovely views over the hills and town. Two lovely walks from the hotel. One up Knockfarel and the other up past the golf course and around by a small loch. The Childhood museum is very small located on the old station platform. The coffee shop here is lovely and staff so friendly although not that cheap. the Deli on the square is also nice with homemade brownies and nice homemade soup as well as other options. Vegetables were frozen watery mixed veg rather than fresh. Boiled potatoes were often tasteless. Breakfast was better although one morning the scrambled egg had a dreadful smell and we left it on the plate rather than risk eating it. Staff were friendly.
There was a brown stain on the bedroom carpet which could have been coffee or perhaps a mishap from a dog as pets were allowed at the hotel. Would have though some carpet cleaner could have been used on this. After booking , we read so many poor reviews before going so did not have high expectations especially for the dinner. Quality varied depending on choice . . Stains on bedroom carpet and some small blood stains on bathroom door front and back. These were never cleaned. Very busy with coach parties. Four bus loads staying in hotel on several nights of the stay. The entertainment was not to our taste and was like something from a care home but easily avoided and we couldn't hear it from our room on the second floor.

Old fashioned and a kind of genteel! A typical Victorian hotel.
Uncomfortable bed. One wee tiny lift.

it was well placed geographically to what I needed. comfortable but too many e mails from Booking.com asking me to up grade and even when I sent the names of the people travelling with me for the rooms they did not appear when we arrived
it wasn’t the property as such, disappointed at the entertainment

Beautiful old hotel - gorgeous views!
Very thin walls and not much sound proofing so could hear everyone in the rooms next door and in the corridor.

We didn't take breakfast we had an appointment
Staff (bar) very slow service, not at all dynamic. Ordered pizzas which took half an hour and was not accompanied by cutlery or napkins. Requested them and it seemed an inconvenience to the bar staff member who seemed both unacquainted with the location of cutlery then delivered it with bare hands and no napkin, akin to passing my glass to me by the rim. Should I just lick your fingers too? Other than that experience it was truly lovely hotel.
