Crafted of heart redwood, Whalesong House is a charming two-story home with a well-equipped, full kitchen, an adjacent dining area, and a living room with a wood stove. A designer’s delight, this rental is lavishly landscaped with an enclosed, rear garden brimming with rhododendrons, climbing roses, hydrangeas, camellias, and other perennials. Designed by one of the owners, the three-foot spherical fountain, Global Peace, which punctuates the dozens of heathers, lavenders, and ornamental grasses in the front garden, has become a Trinidad landmark. And Byrd Baker, the “old-timer” from Mendocino, who, in his small skiff, once blocked a Japanese whaling ship, carved the driftwood whale insignia, which hangs at the apex of the face of the house. Guests of this rental will also enjoy the view from the furnished balcony, the gas grill, and the private hot tub, perfect for soothing both body and soul.

Trinidad is a hidden gem with beautiful views and beaches. The house was exactly as pictured in a nice neighborhood with views and close to local shops, grocery store and restaurants. It was very comfortable for our family of 6 but lacked some basics I've come to expect like at least a minimal amount of alum foil, plastic wrap, sugar etc. Not even a salt shaker! I also would have appreciated a bottle of cleaning fluid. The only thing provided was 2 rolls of paper towel, trash bags and a 2 oz. bottle of dish liquid. You get the listing from VRBO but end up with VACASA who is cumbersome to deal with. Communication with the local manager was difficult.
Nevertheless, I would recommend the rental. Just make sure you bring your own salt.

Bad communication with the local management company, as in we didn’t hear from them until after being there for a full day. Also, why are there so many mirrors in this house? But great location, ocean views, walking distance to local shops/food, close driving distance to the mini grocery store as well. Would stay again.

We loved everything about this house! We had 4 adults and one kid and there was plenty of room for everyone. You could not ask for a better location. It was just 1/2 a block away from the best restaurant and shop in town, and an easy walk to the beach, although it's kind of steep in the way back from the beach. The house had everything you needed, and the yard was phenomenal. Our kid was ready to move in permanently. The only downside is the house is really creaky. If you have light sleepers they will want ear plugs or white noise.

This comfortable house in the middle of Trinidad offered just the right amenities for our stay on the coast for 4 adults and 2 kids. We like to cook so the fully-equipped kitchen was a plus. The backyard allowed the kids to play in a safe place. Views of the bay and ocean were just right. Quiet neighborhood within walking distance to stores, restaurants, aquarium, and beach was another asset. And a wood stove for extra heat and ambience was another plus.

I recommend reading Vacasa's rules very carefully, as they are very different from dealing with human property owners, who are generally more understanding and flexible. We gave notice that terrible inclement weather (torrential rains and dangerous flooding) too concerning for us to travel to the area, hoping not to risk life and limb -- and offered to move our trip to a later date. Vacasa was not interested in offering any flexibility. It's basically the Uber of vacation rental property managers, and their only priority is to take your money. Don't even think about trying to get anyone helpful on the phone, should anything go wrong.

Our family of four thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the house. The ocean and restaurants were steps away. Plenty of Redwood hikes within a short drive.

If you’re planning a family vacation to the Redwoods and trying to figure out where to stay, stop scrolling and book now! Whalesong and the whole town of Trinidad is a charming, walkable treasure! The views from the back deck are beautiful, and the garden in back is incredibly private. There wasn’t one thing we didn’t like about our stay here. We have two kids, a teen and a preteen, and they didn’t want to leave. It’s not fancy, but it has everything you need with nicely updated bathrooms (with excellent water pressure if you care about that), a nice family-friendly game collection, and every book you could ever want to read. Seriously, just book it!

Had a friends & family vacation… we stayed in 2 great places! We had the time of our lives and I look forward to doing it again.

The cottage was great for our family including young-adult children. Everything was very clean, the kitchen was well-equipped and they layout was fantastic. We had one member who needed to do some work and there is a small upstairs "office" space and a desk in the laundry area that worked well for him. The upstairs deck was lovely, and the outside/backyard area was very pleasant. The location was fantastic - short walk to town or beach. Main downside was lack of communication both before the trip and during - you are dealing with a company rather than a single owner, and the instructions for getting in, communication in general was poor.

This was the perfect home for our family. Location could not be better, and house was comfy and warm. Would love to return!

The bad. Look for hood stuff at the end of the review.
We walked in to the back door wide open and water all over the floor. How long was this door open. The back room with the laundry smells like mold or mildew.
The home is a cozy cottage vibe with very outdated appliances. For example the laundry does not function well. The dryer will not get your clothes dry.
The listing states two queen beds but one is a full bed and it’s hard as a rock. I wouldn’t care about these things normally but the price was outrageous for what you got. On top of some hot tub few and a non refundable damage waiver the company takes you pay the almost four hundred a night.
The good
It’s a great location except for the unfortunate homeless person sleeping across the street, (we made chili for this person but they were gone before it was done).
Right next to the beach and if you know the trails around Trinidad you can take shortcuts.
The upstairs bed was like a cloud and the deck upstairs was nice

The house was just perfect. The location and the second floor view of the ocean was spectacular. Highly recommend staying here.

We stayed one week in this home and it was perfect for our family of four. The location is great as you can walk to the pier, Trinidad point, restaurants, stores, a winery, etc. We cooked several of our meals and the kitchen had everything we needed, although they could supply a better spatula (the one there is too thick). The grill is a nice new Weber. The bathrooms are remodeled and very nice. The deck off the upstairs bedroom was nice for enjoying an evening cocktail and watching the sunset. The listing's photos need some updating as the layout of the furniture has changed. For example, the large TV in the living area is not shown. The carpet on the stairs and upstairs could use replacement. Overall we were very happy with our stay and wouldn't hesitate to book it again.

Sunsets from the upstairs balcony are not to be missed. The private hot tub is great for a soak after a day of exploring the coast. Wonderful place with responsive staff.

I enjoyed the stay here overall. I liked the open concept living room and kitchen. There's also a great loft area, and almost every corner had a good view of the water. The location is excellent! It's walking distance to the beach, trails and restaurants. The couple things I wasn't the most fond of were that it was dusty in the bedrooms, and the beds were just OK comfort-wise. It might be fine if you're below 6' and prefer a firmer style bed.

The house was located in a very cool town of Trinidad. Walking distance down some stairs to the beach and a coffee shop / bakery where I had some delicious Crab Benedict. There is also a grocery store and several restaurants about 1/2 mile away where we ate at twice because it was so good and affordable. The house itself was older, but the kitchen and bathrooms seemed to be updated recently and the kitchen was well stocked with cooking supplies. It didn't have cable TV, but there are Roku's and tons of books to read. It had a big stand alone heater near the front door to heat the place which worked ok, but we built a fire in the wood stove a few nights with the supplied wood. That was perfect. It had hot tub out back on the patio that was great after hiking through the Redwoods all day. Ocean views from the front and off the deck from the upstairs master bedroom. This was a great place for our first trip to northern CA and we would definitely stay here again!

Vacasa is a great company! Very responsive! When we checked in there had been an animal that had knocked over the trash bin and spread trash everywhere. We also had an issue with the furnace. These problems were both dealt with almost immediately. The person who dealt with the issues, I believe her name was Jasmine, was prompt, professional and a great representative for your company! Definitely an A+ experience!

Whalesong House is amazing. I loved staying in such a unique, beautiful house. Trinidad itself is beautiful, and the abundant windows in this house let you enjoy the ocean and the scenery. I wish we could have stayed longer.

We enjoyed our stay at the Whalesong house. The location is exceptional, the ocean views are wonderful and the house is very comfortable and cozy. The grounds are lovely and we enjoyed watching hummingbirds zip around the backyard. The upstairs bedroom does get rather warm in the evening but the ceiling fan certainly helps it feel cooler. The window shades also allow quite a bit of morning sun in but we brought travel blackout shades so we could sleep in a bit. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning to this home.

This reservation was last minute and the only home available the dates needed. The home was exactly as represented. The downstairs rooms are small, but the custom design of the home works well. The upstairs was the only room used. There was small deck off the room with garden views. The bathrooms were modern and bright. The art in the home represented owners who have traveled. It was refreshing being in a house with personal touches. It was very easy to get comfortable and relax. There are plenary of windows and a bench in the front to enjoy the garden and view the ocean. Walking distance to the Eatery restaurant, the beach, Trinidad Head and Seascape restaurant. Great place for visiting Trinidad. I would definitely recommend and book again.

Fine and funky
We have stayed many times at Whalesong due to proximity to our family and walk to Trinidad State beach and hiking the head every day! Love the Beachcomber restaurant and this year enjoyed the Seascape restaurant for breakfast! The house seemed brighter and the bathrooms have been nicely updated past few years and well stocked with towels etc. Plenty of dishes, glasses and utensils, pots and pans! Very pretty front and back flower gardens and a great library! We enjoyed our stay and can see a new couch and carpeting up the stairs and bedrooms in it’s near future.

Short and Wet
Our travel plans only had us here for a couple days during which time it rained a bit so we did not get to enjoy the patio or deck. Rest of house was clean and comfortable. Lots of brightly lit space to spread out in. Plus Trinidad is a great little town right on the coast with a great beach and not far from the Redwoods.

Lovely home
Whalesong is an extremely comfortable and beautiful home. Beautiful ocean views from the living room, kitchen and upstairs bedroom and balcony. Kitchen is well stocked with anything you'd need to cook. Very clean and sparkly! Beds are very comfortable. Short walk to town restaurants and oceanfront. Friendly town. Might suggest some plastic glassware to use outside in the beautiful garden yard.

Redwood National Park Getaway
This is such a beautiful home. There was plenty of space for me and three friends and it was very clean when we arrived. The backyard is a gorgeous and peaceful garden, the hot tub was great, and the house had all the cooking supplies we needed. There is a small deck off the upstairs bedroom that makes for great sunset watching, too. Comfortable, light-filled, welcoming.

It was a beautiful home in a very nice location!
We took the family out for a Redwood forest expedition and had a comfortable home with a beautiful hot tub to come back to and relax in after hiking and exploring all day. There was also an amazing hiking trail right by the house that we walked to watched the sun set.

Great location with beautiful views! It was as cute as it could be❤️
2.5 / 5.0
This is a great location, close to so many state parks, a national park and many beaches.
Downside is that there are a lot of bugs. I did read in the binder that this is normal due to wet weather but want to make sure I call this out. In the morning many pill bugs come out from the carpet and ceiling and toward the end of the day there are many flies that congregate in the upper floor bed room.
Other than that the house is quite charming and you cannot beat the view. It’s across from a sweet little church and walking distance to the beach and lovely restaurant.
