The staff was helpful and very welcoming right from my check-in until the moment I left. The location is very convenient for getting food from the main street with all the restaurants and cafes, and also close to the Hikone Castle for sightseeing, yet very peaceful in a back street right next to a temple. The room is cozy and I had a very good night's rest on the futon on the tatami floor. The bathrooms and shower/bath areas were spotless, and there is a washing machine that I could use which was so nice after a whole day of cycling. I would recommend this place if you are staying a night in Hikone.

As soon as I arrived at Honmachi Juku I realised that I had stayed there once before - perhaps 5 years ago. The building is delightful. The elderly gentleman at reception couldn't have been nicer and more welcoming. Indeed, the welcome started with the enthusiastic ladies at the Tourist Information office at Hikone Station, where they gave me a map and drew directions to the Honmachi Juku. En route I stopped at Izara, a bar / cafe on the historic shopping street, where 5 years ago I'd sat outside sipping beer after visiting Hikone Castle. Not only is the castle itself magificent, walking around the extensive moat area is genuinely relaxing: the pairs of swans living on the moat appear to get that, too. Another Tourist Information office is a short walk from the castle: again, friendly, informative, enthusiastic ladies in charge. One place I recommend and which (on this visit) I didn't have time to re-visit is 'Peters' - an Okinawa-themed bar / restaurant a short walk from the JR Station. I will make time next time - soon.

Very historical and well kept building. Staffs were very kind and welcoming. Nice traditional Japanese style breakfast. Nice location by Castle road of Hikone.

The building is an Important Cultural Property in the old town of Hikone and right next to a beautiful temple. The breakfast is the best Japanese breakfast I have ever eaten, made fresh at a time of the guests’ choosing
The walls are thin, as in all old Japanese houses, and our room was right next to the common sitting room, so there was almost no “sound privacy”.

Location wise, it couldn’t have been better, right next to the old-new town( the place with all the cool kura style buildings). It is also a hop away from the castle and a hop, skip and jump away from the lake. It is a traditional Japanese house with Tatami floors and you wake up to the sound of birds!
I liked anything and I’m sure I could have asked for an extra futon, but I’m a side sleeper and my hip bone got a bit sore.

NIce, small, establishment. Simple but good breakfast. Friendly staff. Good facilities and very clean. The location was very convenient to Hikone attractions and to local restaurants etc. Despite some shortcomings, we would stay there again.
There were some communication difficulties resulting in some gaps in service. For example, proper bath towels were not initially provided until we asked. On departure, the staff were unable to secure a taxi to the station necessitating a 20 minute walk (with luggage) to the station (where a number of taxis were waiting, un-engaged!). We were the only guests, but there could have been noise from the other two rooms on the floor if they had been occupied (although, this is common in Japan).
