Description and History:
174 B Saint Philip Street, Unit 1 - The Adams Bennett House

The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable Charleston double house is constructed was acquired by John Jochim Bulow in 1834 from the Rowland Rugely estate.  Bulow, a prosperous merchant, and planter owned extensive real estate holdings on the peninsula as well as south of Charleston along Rantowle’s creek.

Constructed in 1922, this home is now known as 174 B Saint Philip Street. This iconic double house style architecture is characterized by symmetrical facades, full two floor construction, gabled or hipped roof, large porches that run the length of the house and provide ample space for relaxation and socializing, soaring ceilings, and large windows, and standing seam metal roofs.

This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a renovated dependency or a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, original moldings, plasterwork, windows and doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction. As an integral part of Saint Philip Square, this award-winning (Preservation Society and Governor’s award) historic building has been meticulously curated to enhance your stay in Charleston.

Saint Philip Square:
Saint Philip Square is unique collection of historic buildings carefully tucked away from busy traffic, and meticulously curated to enhance your stay in Charleston. This property is one of seventeen unique rentals. The grounds comprise five special outdoor garden areas with amenities such as fountains, dining areas, fire pits, and covered barbecues. In the evening, this oasis sparkles with outdoor lighting, making it the perfect place for nightcaps after a day of exploring.

Your unit at Saint Philip Square includes a piazza-style private porch overlooking gorgeous, landscaped gardens. With comfortable seating, ideal for a morning cup of coffee, or a restful break between city adventures. The Piazzas overlook lush, landscaped entries from the street and private parking areas as well as the beautiful gardens and fountain areas.

This 5 BR/5 BA home exceeded expectations! The location is fantastic, the courtyard was so great for our group to enjoy happy hour and the end of our evening. The bedrooms and baths were all great for our 5 couples. The porches were great too and even the artwork was great. We are out for every meal so having just a small dining area was no issue for us. Would 💯 recommend!

Lots of outdoor space to sit together; however, many people use the space and it can get crowded. We also had a porch for seating most of us. Living room was pretty small compared to how it looked on line. I was not aware that we had to use a stairwell going to the second floor - I don't know if I missed that or it wasn't clear on the booking; I thought we were on the main floor, plus a room on the second. No outside stairwell to 3rd floor bedroom; had to use the spiral staircase inside. Shower on 3rd floor is very tiny. Water pressure and hot water in showers in most rooms was not good. The kitchen worked well for us, although we had to eat in the living room or outside because of seating. The bedrooms are very large and very pretty. Location and parking are good - about one mile from downtown. Property manager was very helpful. Instructions for checkout are very clear and useful.

We loved our stay in Charleston. We had 5 couples with us and this house was perfect! They thought of everything! We enjoyed the outdoors pace and convenience to all that Charleston has to offer. Only complaint was the water pressure in the showers.

We had a wonderful stay at Adams Bennett. There was plenty of room for 8 adults. Great location, easy check in, and exactly like the pictures. We didn’t get to use the beautiful outdoor space as it rained the entire weekend. Thankfully they even had umbrellas for us which made walking around Charleston easier. Would definitely recommend staying here.

The location and parking pass was great! Having restaurants and ice cream parlors nearby were a plus. The CART stop was two blocks away which we used daily. There are several steps to the living quarters. The living room area was hard for 10 girls to comfortably sit and visit. We did love the outside area
