About this bed and breakfast
ABOUT THE LANAUX 2-BEDROOM SUITE:
Our namesake two-bedroom king suite is as beautiful as it is spacious, combining original period architecture with an elegant Parisian theme and all the modern comforts you could want - A/C, wi-fi, smart HDTVs, and more. A private balcony, en-suite bathroom, sunlit atrium kitchenette, and king-sized pillow-tops plus day bed in separate bedrooms invite you to stay right next door to your friends, yet still enjoy a space of your own. Vaulted 14-foot ceilings soar high above it all, adding to the sense of openness and grandeur.
MORE ABOUT THE SPACE:
The Lanaux Mansion is a historic bed & breakfast at the intersection connecting the lively French Quarter with the famous jazz and blues district of the Faubourg-Marigny - a.k.a. Frenchmen Street.
The mansion consists of two deluxe 1-bedroom suites, one massive 2-bedroom suite, and one separate cottage suite, all with private bathrooms and kitchenettes. Ground-level suites have private entrances, while the second-floor suites share a common staircase just inside the mansion's front door.
This listing describes the Lanaux 2-Bedroom Suite on the second floor.
This is our namesake accommodation, and one of our finest. It features spacious living areas, a private balcony, an en-suite bathroom with shower and vanity area, and a sunny atrium-style kitchenette overlooking the courtyard.
Beautifully renovated, these massive rooms combine the classic architecture and detailing of the period with every modern comfort you could want - wi-fi, individually controlled air-conditioning and heat, smart HDTVs, microwave, refrigerator, coffee/tea station, and more.
When it's time to sleep, two pillow-top king beds plus a daybed in large separate bedrooms let you stay right next door to your companions while still enjoying space of your own. There's even convenient daybeds if you're traveling with a child or additional friend.
Everything you need is right here for you in the Lanaux Two-Bedroom Suite, though we imagine you won't spend too much time inside. After all, you're mere steps away from the city's best entertainment, restaurants, and bars.
NEED SPACE FOR MORE FRIENDS?
For even bigger parties, you can add the adjoining Ruthie's Balcony Suite (https://www.vrbo.com/2089869), also upstairs in the main house.
You can sleep another four by booking the Wieland Suite along with Sophie's Enchanted Cottage, downstairs off our courtyard. Here's the link to this combination listing: https://www.vrbo.com/2012644

ABOUT THE LOCATION
Step outside the Lanaux Mansion and cross the street to hit the bars and restaurants of the French Quarter, or walk around the corner to find the myriad music spots on Frenchmen Street.
You're about a block from either.
Also within a few minutes' stroll are the famous and sprawling French Market, the legendary beignets and coffee of the Cafe du Monde, the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral, and the paddle-wheeled riverboats along the Mississippi waterfront - not to mention more bars, restaurants, museums, curio shops, and art galleries than you could possibly ever visit in one trip.
The dream-like settings of Audubon Park and City Park, with their massive moss-covered oaks and glorious mansions lining the nearby avenues, are a short drive or bike ride away. Further afield, you have the deep Louisiana bayous full of gators and cajuns alike, plus historic battlefields and plantations to tour.
You couldn't possibly see and do everything New Orleans has to offer . . . but you can sure have fun trying!
So grab a drink and start planning your trip now. Or come with no plan at all. Either way, having a great time in the Big Easy is, well, easy.
ABOUT THE LANAUX MANSION:
You might recognize the stately Italianate mansion at 547 Esplanade from "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," just one of the many films and TV shows in which it's been featured.
The house itself is a star, with a fascinating past. But it's not just its good looks and pedigree that make the French Quarter Lanaux Mansion so attractive. It's the unbeatable location at the corner of Chartres Street and Esplanade Avenue - which literally straddles the line between the rollicking French Quarter scene and the famous music clubs and jazz dens of Frenchman Street.
Sitting on the balcony with a drink in your hand, you might hear the blare of trumpets from nearby Frenchmen Street, the drums of a parade on Esplanade, and the whistle of a riverboat rolling down the mighty Mississippi, just two blocks away. If you're lucky, you might even catch the spectacle of a second-line or jazz funeral during your stay here.
Built in 1879 by wealthy attorney Charles Andrew Johnson, the house has played host to not only actors and film crews, but to prominent figures of history including southern general Robert E. Lee and others. Some even claim there's a ghost among its distinguished list of guests.
Wallpaper from around the time of the American Civil War still adorns the massive double parlors downstairs, as does much of the home's original furniture. The vaulted guest-room ceilings soar high overhead. And the decor is a fine mix of classic period architecture and stylish upscale amenities.
In 140 years, it has changed owners only four times. Most recently, it was the gregarious and accomplished New Orleanian businesswoman Ruth Bodenheimer who ran the home as a much-loved bed and breakfast for decades until her passing in 2019.
Inspired by Ruth's love for the house and the one-of-a-kind city called New Orleans, her daughter Beth now proudly carries on the legacy of making guests feel welcome and at home here.

Beautiful space, but was a little awkward for our krewe. You have to walk-thru one of the bedrooms to us the toilet or kitchen, which can create some potential uncomfortable situations depending on who you travel with. Also, a lot of street dwellers hangout on the front steps at all hours, which could be a little concerning for some.

The Lanaux Suite upstairs is historic and classic.
The age of the building of course causes issues.
The heater blows cold air, the refrigerator freezes everything, the curtain in the toilet keeps falling, creepy sounds at night.
The parking around the house on the street is good, but the owner kept scaring us to go park in a hotel which we did but was very inconvenient, expensive and not required,
The Bed and "Breakfast" is literally just boxes of yogurt and juices in the fridge which were frozen and hard to thaw out.

A beautiful, historic home with character and balconies in a great location to explore both the French Quarter and Frenchmen St. areas. Relatively quiet neighborhood just a few blocks from French Market and the streetcar line. Very comfortable accommodations. Great communication. The host is very helpful and responsive. We will definitely recommend this property to friends and family and hope we can come back and visit this beautiful home and city again!!

I travel to NOLA with a group every year. Without question this is the best place we’ve ever stayed. The mansion is beyond gorgeous. The location is in the middle of everything. The host was super helpful. 100% will stay here again.

I am hesitant to write a great review, as the secret of this gem will be out!! However, Beth and her staff were so wonderful, I must give them allllll the props. Easy check in; gorgeous and comfy beds; stocked mini-fridge with water, mixers, and snacks; glistening bathrooms with such good water pressure... and the views from the house itself! Such a great spot, with a private balcony and garden. The house was so pretty! Very comfortable and quiet. Thank you for having us!

Great communication, responsiveness. We spent several nights in a 2 bedroom apartment, then several in another apartment. Staff made the transition seamless. Great location, will stay here again.

Excellent location
You cannot beat this location for proximity to the French Quarter and Marigny. The home is beautiful with rooms much larger than usually found in the Quarter. We had no wifi or TV after the first night which negatively impacted our vacation. The management responded courteously and quickly to our questions and concerns, however, although they were unable to resolve the problem. They graciously offered a reasonable resolution.

We had a great time during our stay - the location was excellent and was everything we were hoping for on our first trip to the French Quarter!

Charming and Beautiful
My husband and I had a lovely stay at Lanaux Mansion. The house is beautiful and has that old New Orleans charm. Beth was super helpful with any questions we had. We would definitely stay there again.

New Orleans Charm
Great location right between Frenchman St, Burbon St and right around the corner from Frenchman Market. Walkable to all venues. Quiet and felt safe where we stayed. DO NOT park at the open air lots close by - too many break-ins, but there are good garages not far and everything is walkable. Bathroom is off one of the bedrooms and there is only one so it worked well for our group but may not for others. Everything was well put together to be old New Orleans, very glad we stayed here.

Amazing Property & Location!
We were lucky to stay in this home for three days/nights towards the end of our vacation. This home is an amazing historic gem! The location is great and within a very short walking distance to French Quarter. The home was very clean, bedding comfortable, and we loved the history of the home and the antique furnishings. The washer & dryer on the first floor was a God send when on a 2 week trip. We had plenty of room to relax in the suite. Hats off to Beth and her staff!! If ever in New Orleans, this will be my go to for accommodations.

Authentic New Orleans!
What a gem this place is! I really wanted someplace that felt safe, clean and luxurious, but authentic to the city. We loved the neighborhood! The little grocery around the corner was convenient, Dat Dog was fantastic, and access to the French Quarter was perfect! We had the best time!

First trip to NOLA
I can't say enough about how positive our stay was at the Lanaux Mansion. The location was absolutely perfect and the two rooms we stayed in were gorgeous. The hosts were beyond gracious and offered suggestions to restaurants and activities. We can't wait to come back!

Beautiful New Orleans
We stayed here from March 18-20 with our 3 children ages 8 to 16. What a magical place this is. Absolutely beautiful! Our hosts made us feel so welcome. The beautiful Lanaux Suite had everything we could possible need from shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom to a stocked mini fridge in the lovely kitchenette. The beds and linens were so comfortable it was hard to get up in the morning. Just steps away from the French Quarter, you couldn’t ask for a better location. The historic charm and beauty of the Lanaux Mansion is something that will definitely having me stay here again.

Wonderful quick 2 night stay
The mansion is beautiful and the Lanaux Suite is so grand. Beth provided all the information we needed and responded when we had questions. Access was easy and the directions were clear. The ceilings are SO high and all the furniture and decor are perfect. The kitchen, with continental breakfast, was tiny but useful. The short walk to the French Market made sightseeing, meals and quick trips for beignets very convenient. We were driving on after NoLo, so were only there for 2 nights, but I'm thinking of coming back for a girl's trip. Either way, we'll be back.
