The hotel is generally fine and centrally located with an independent feel. The lobby and halls looked a bit older than expected with a not great looking, but not busy pub vs restaurant downstairs. It is also at the edge of the Tenderloin so you will get the usual characters and dirtiness on the street. That said, I walked to Moscone Center/Yerba Buena Center daily (12 min) for a conference and heading toward Union Sq vs straight down to Market is a nicer route. Staff was nice and friendly. The lobby was generally nice with work stations, free coffee and tea in the am and a water machine for drinking water. The room was cute, we got a free upgrade to a King room (not huge but reasonable size), and it seemed renovated and clean. Seems to attract a lot of tourists from around the world who were friendly. There were protests at the Hilton across the street, when we stayed, so it was slightly noisy, but there were no protests at our hotel and the windows mostly blocked the noise! It seemed to be a citywide protest at the big hotel chains only.

Kathryn at the front desk is amazing. She is helpful and professional.

I had a terrible experience at this hotel. When I tried to call to let them know I will be late to check in, it took us calling the hotel 7 times in order to get a hold of someone. Once we got there, while checking in, they informed us of the protestors across the street that have been banging trashcans and sounding off bullhorns starting at 7am and lasting all day and night. This should have been an email to mentally prepare us for what was happening. I talked to them about switching rooms the next day but ended up staying in the room that I was in. On the last day of my stay, I went to my room that evening after being away the entire day, and my door wasn't shut, they left it open with all my valuables in there. There are a few additional things that happened which I will be emailing the hotel directly about, but I will never stay at this hotel again and there needs to be accommodations made for the experience.

Hotel Spero is not rally on Union Square but fairly close. Good value for the price. Very friendly, helpful staff.
4.4
I would suggest they allow you to cast from a phone or laptop to the TV. I was preparing for a work presentation and that would have been very helpful. Most hotels allow this so I would think the Spero would want to be competitive. Not a huge deal if on a pleasure trip but was very inconvenient in this case. Other than that is was a great stay.

Nice Hotel. Most of the staff was friendly. The manager in charge of housekeeping was not friendly - he was filling in at the front desk and didn't seem happy at all about having to do that. It's obvious that he is not a people-person and needs to be kept away from direct contact with customers.

Small but nice room. AC could have worked better, but all in all a nice stay.

Hotel Spero is a small, old renovated hotel that is nice and clean inside, but it’s in a rough neighborhood, Tenderloin, and there were hoards of homeless people everywhere on the streets. There were also 2 other hotel cleaning staffs picketing across the street from 7am-10pm blaring sirens, yelling, drumming, and keeping our family awake.
I spoke to the front desk and said we completely understood that they need to picket for better wages, but that we weren’t going to stay for the next two nights at the hotel and needed a refund for our remaining two nights. She told us to contact hotels.com who contacted the hotel management and refused our request, only offering to move us to a higher floor, which wouldn’t have accomplished anything.
Stay in Nob Hill or Fisherman’s Wharf or basically any other neighborhood, unless you enjoy covering your ears all night and dodging hundreds of people living on the street right outside.
The bathroom and room were also very tiny.

Wouldn’t recommend staying in union square at all. Protesters outside the Hilton making lots of noise and only a street down there are lots of homeless people who appear to be on drugs … of course none of this is the fault of the hotel. The hotel appears nice from the reception area. The rooms are small. Look like they could do with a deep clean. And the air con is unable to be adjusted in the room so was really hot at times. We had dinner at jaspers one night… service was slow and we were literally the only ones in there. However hotel staff are friendly and there is a water refill station in reception which is nice. Overall wouldn’t recommend staying.

Housekeeping was great/timely, cool lobby, roomy suite, had the amenities we needed and was in a good location for getting around. (Homelessness wasn’t horrible right around the hotel. Other reviews had us worried).
4.4
It’s the second time we’ve stayed here. Super convenient for what we were doing. My only complaint has nothing to do with the hotel itself. But the Hilton down the block has striking workers that were making a bunch of noise until 10pm and started again at 5:30 am. (I fully support the striking workers!) But I didn’t get much sleep. The hotel itself is nice, staff is friendly. I would make sure the strike is over before booking a room here again

Stylish and well appointed room. Very comfortable bed. Great location. Great price/value.

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Spero. Rooms were comfortable and clean. Staff were very friendly except one person. We had no problems with the area and walked out at night. Just don’t go too far down Taylor street. Convenient for trams, busses and BART
4.4
While the neighborhood itself is not the best, the hotel was clean, comfortable and the staff was super helpful and welcoming.
4.4
Good. Very hard to reach front desk by phone, in the hotel or from outside. Suite was nice.

My recent hotel stay at this establishment was a pleasant experience overall, with clean and updated rooms providing a comfortable stay. Despite the less-than-ideal location of the hotel, I felt very safe inside. However, I would advise potential guests to be aware that booking through a third party may result in additional charges, including deposit fees and other hidden fees. It has been 6 days since my stay and I have still not received my deposit refund, which is concerning. Due to these issues, I will not be returning for future visits or inconvenience.

The hotel was beautiful and very clean, the restaurant Jaspers (attached) was very good. Parking available right next door by valet for a fee but was super easy! San Francisco needs to do better after dark though, the neighborhoods are NOT safe in these nice hotel districts any longer. Not a reflection on the hotel at all.

The staff was very welcoming. We stayed in a quiet suite on an upper floor with a large bedroom, bathroom, living room, and plenty of natural light with city views. The suite had been recently updated with nice furnishings and a comfortable bed but still looked pretty worn around the edges. The first thing we noticed were two large white-ish stains on the dark gray sectional couch, so we steered clear. We had dinner plans and didn’t inspect the room any further, but after coming back to turn in, we found short hairs from a previous guest around the sink and on the toiletries, as well as longer hairs on the back of the bathroom door and bath tiles. Oddly, there were also short hairs embedded in the tub’s paint, likely from a bad reglazing job. By that time, there were a lot of people checking in and we were too exhausted to change rooms, so we cleaned up the bathroom as best we could before using it, and turned in. Overnight, the toilet stopped working. While the hotel has charm and we really liked the size of the room, we wouldn’t stay again. Also, the area near Union Square isn’t exactly walkable to the more picturesque parts of the city and can have an aggressive vibe. If you are driving, keep in mind the hotel doesn’t have parking. There is a lot next door with in/out privileges but it’s $49 overnight. I really wanted to like this hotel, but unfortunately it didn’t live up to the reviews or the beautiful pictures.

Nice hotel, great staff, however the surrounding areas of the hotel are not great,
Room was a little small for 3 of us, but for a city break it was okay
4.4
Architecturally lovely hotel with great staff. Super comfortable bed, quiet room, plenty of towels! The area the hotel is in is pretty sketchy but I knew that in advance. I didn’t have any trouble with people on the street but I definitely waited inside for my transportation.

Loved it! Super cute and clean.

All staff are exceptionally nice. Especially Jon. He was amazing and he knows how to connect to people and make then feel at ease. Whatever you need, just call the front desk and the staff are more than happy to help. Everything about this hotel is fantastic.
4.4
The stay it self was good. I was charged an extra charge of the equal amount of my stay a few hours after checking in and when I asked the front desk about it they said oh it was a mistake but I have still not gotten my money back from their mistake yet.
4.4
Great hotel! No free breakfast but not a deal breaker. The valet parking isn’t cheap/ but not awful either and they are right around the corner from the front door and so very friendly! Love the city!! The area around the hotel definitely has some unsavory things BUT you see that in any city and no one was rude or threatening by any means. The little convenience store across the street was super handy. Definitely would stay here again!
4.4
Sound carries a lot, and there are drug needles on the roof next to the 2nd floor. There was one just a foot or two away from my window. However, front desk staff was really great, and lobby/hotel rooms have elegant decor. Would be nice of they put a desk in all their rooms. There was also some dust on some of the furniture/bathroom, and the drain clogged quickly.
4.4
The hotel doesn’t look clean and I didn’t feel safe around it.
4.4
The property has the old world charm with classic new amenities. It was clean and comfy. I stayed on the 15th floor so the view was great.
4.4
Clean room. Nice city view
4.4
Clean the rooms were small and cute
4.4
Great place! Walking distance to a lot. Water and coffee in the lobby were great
4.4
I love the property but the surrounding is not great coz of homeless roaming in the street and some of them lying on the empty spaces of most properties and buildings
4.4
The one bedroom suite was huge, and the room was beautiful. The staff are a shining example of hospitality and made my stay even better.
4.4
Comfortable and quiet. Appreciate the upgrade
4.4
Everyone is always so friendly and helpful. I love staying here.
4.4
Nice clean hotel, but would stay there again due to the number of homeless people in the area. Felt very unsafe and uneasy walking around the hotel area especially from late afternoon onwards.
4.4
Nice hotel, good location.
Scary amount of homeless in the area
4.4
Overall it was good , location is not good . Drug people on street.
4.4
Hotel was good, restaurant was good. Was able to check in early so was grateful for that
4.4
Staff was terrific, a few blocks from Union Square, and if you're vegan, several restaurants within walking distance.
4.4
Bad area, old bulding with weird smell. Super small rooms with overall questionable cleanliness throughout. Pictures did it too much justice online. It was inexpensive though.
