We enjoyed the location - walk to a beach for sunrise and kayak in the evening on the river. It was an extremely peaceful setting. The room was comfortable and it was fantastic to have a kitchen with a nice size refrigerator. There was even free laundry on premise! Complimentary beach gear and kayak equipment were available. The grounds would have benefited from more watering and love. We look forward to a return visit.

Just a calm and quiet place to stay.

We stayed in Coco Unit D for my honeymoon recently for 5 nights and we had the most incredible stay. The river view from the unit was stunning. The units themself are small but really comfortable and have everything you’d need such as AC and a kitchen with dishes and pots and pans and coffee maker and a comfortable bed and plenty of towels. The location is really ideal since it’s in between Poipu/Waimea and the north shore and 10 minutes away from the airport.
But what makes this place really stand out is the amenities it has to offer. We used the free kayaks to kayak to Secret falls trailhead which was about 40 minutes away. We used the free bikes to bike along the ocean. We loved being able to do our laundry here and use the snorkel equipment. Also the mango trees! There are about 5 mango trees on the property that you are allowed to harvest from and the mangoes are so delicious! There was also a star fruit tree and a small lime tree!
Paul has truly put so much thought into his property and I couldn’t have imagined a better place for us to have stayed at for our honeymoon.

If you don’t want to pay the high prices for a resort this was an excellent choice. We had 5 days on the island . Being close to the hotel was not our goal. We got up and out exploring each day. Back to shower for dinner at one of the multiple restaurants within 5 minutes away. The beach once you locate is also 5 minutes away. Perfect choice for us

Beautiful and peaceful cottage on the river and 5 minutes from the beach. Very comfortable bed and woke up to a palm tree breeze every morning along with a rooster reminding us it was time to get up 😊

This was the perfect place for our stay!! We absolutely loved the River cottage and highly recommend it to couples. It’s renovated, with all the amenities, and a built in alarm clock (roosters lol) Fern Grotto Inn was a beautiful place and will forever be a special place for us.

The property and suite were beautifully kept. We loved that they had bikes, kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkeling equipment which we used at the river which was right next to us and at the beach across the street. The bike path nearby was amazing views over the ocean. As everywhere in Kauai there are roosters so bring earplugs because they start early.

It was very clean and comfortable place, very efficient and warm home feeling, the kitchen had absolutely everything you could need. I would recommend this place to anybody looking for a small kitchen, great location place.

This truly is a home away from home! Kitchen is well equipped and the bathroom has full size toiletries. Free laundry facilities include detergent and dryer sheets. The amenity that totally goes above and beyond is the recreational activity supplies: kayaks, SUPs, coolers (ice, too), beach towels, beach chairs, beach mats, and snorkel gear! You can get to the river from the property and the beach is a very short walk. I recommend this place for adults and solo travelers.
Only complaint, and it has nothing to do with the resort (it's all over the island), was the roosters. The owner lives onsite which also helps keep any issues to a minimum.
We would definitely stay there again.

True Hawaii. We were immersed in the sounds of birds, breezes, and we could even hear the ocean at night! Really
appreciated the easy access to the river and they had all the outdoor amenities like kayaks, coolers, boogie boards, and bikes (for the 10 mile bike path just a block up the road!) It was central to the Kauai adventure tubing, Smiths luau, and only 30 mins from the north shore. Kapaa town is 5 mins and has all amenities. The road this property is on is also on a Heritage trial —which has multiple sacred sites to visit, a Hindu temple, and a waterfall! I can’t say enough about this place.

Booking the River cottage instead of a hotel and resort was such a great decision. The cottages are surrounded by lush gardens with trees laden with fruit and flowers. The area is quiet and affords you complete privacy. The check in process was great! Everything was already prepared for us when we went inside. The cottage is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need and was impeccably clean. There is an access point to the Wailua river with kayaks available. Laundry facilities were also such a convenience. I would love to stay here again! Such a magical and whimsical place.

We enjoyed our stay at the beautiful Fern Grotto Inn. The room was clean and its furnishings and atmosphere greatly enhanced our Kauaiin experience by introducing us to local culture and customs. The well maintained grounds reflected the beauty of the "garden island" and the kind and friendly staff were quick to address our every need. We would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for an awesome Hawaiian experience!

This was our first time visiting Hawaii and our stay at Fern Grotto Inn was a pleasant one. The room was very clean , plenty of towels . The air conditioner , toaster oven, microwave worked perfectly. The grounds are well kept . There are fruit trees on the property as well. The inn keeper was very hospitable and attentive to our needs.

This place was quiet and cozy. Walking distance to the beach, river, restaurants and bike path. Kayaks, bikes, beach equipment all to use. No need to rent anything. We stayed in the River Cottage and it was fully loaded down to chocolates and a 2 beers in the fridge. Definitely want to go back

The Fern Grotto Inn was an amazing place to stay for our visit to Kauai. We had the Ohana house all to ourselves. It had all the comforts of home. The property is gorgeous and has access to the Wailua river. It is close to a wonderful beach - Lydgate Beach which is walkable but I would recommend driving to it. Close to shops and restaurants. Easy access to the highway which takes you everywhere. Our host was accessible and always on property if anything occurs. Lovely stay!

This is such an incredible place to stay! Includes laundry, full kitchen stocked with beer, water, and chocolates, coffee, tea, olive oil, a grill, a private backyard, snorkel gear, beach chairs, umbrellas, beach shoes, even kayaks and SUPs! I even had a cordless Dyson to vacuum any sand daily. The honeymoon suite is incredible for couples - just a wonderful place run by wonderful people who make the stay just lovely.

The Fern Grotto Inn is a lovely property. The staff is wonderful and the grounds are well kept. There are 2 BBQ ‘s outside should you want to cook outside. We were in cottage “b’. The Wailua river is just behind it. The property offers 2 stand up paddle boards, snorkeling equipment and 1 very large kayak.
This would be a great place for a large family gathering.

There was plenty of privacy. The landscaping is dreamy. There were chickens up in the mango trees. The launching chute into the canal for the kayaks was such fun.

The cottage was extremely well appointed with everything we needed to be able to cook basic meals. It even had a bidet. We enjoyed the use of the on site kayaks, paddle boards and grills. The location is perfect for exploring the island. If we return to Kauai we will definitely stay here again.

Great old house with modern amenities. Small inn. Windows everywhere throughout the house, as well as ceiling fans. Unit air conditioners through out. Well stocked. Little extras like specially folded linen and paper products, as well as flowers. Great support. Tucked away from a major thoroughfare, next to a park. Easy to traverse to other parts of the island. Close to airport. Back of property on a canal that connects with the Wailua river Bikes, kayaks, and beach stuff free for guest use. Chickens, birds and geckos everywhere. Loved this place. Would stay again.

We stayed in the Garden Cottage. It's a wonderful size with basically everything you would want and more: nice AC unit and fan, plenty of towels and blankets and pillows, great shower, pots & pans and a hot plate (we fried up eggs most mornings), a small fridge, electric kettle, a huge flat screen with Roku and AppleTV.
One also has direct access to the river! I paddle boarded for the first time and launched feet away from where we stayed on a paddle board owned by the inn. Parking was also super easy.
Where it's located is also great. We were near grocery stores, great restaurants and coffee shops, and walking distance from nice beaches.
We don't really like resorts and wanted a quiet place that made it easy to get hikes and good eating spots without having to deal with crowds or noise at night. This was perfect!

The River Cottage is thoughtfully furnished. The kitchen is stocked with good cooking pots and pans, cutlery, and plates. Alexa was a wonderful feature. It seems like you are in an older time in Kauai, not just a sterile new room.

This is a dream accomodation for anybody who wants to visit Kauai. It is idealy located, very comfortable, very clean, extremely well managed. The property is equiped with everything you need (laundry, cayaks, snorkeling gear, beach mats etc...). Highly recommended.

We spent 5 nights at the Fern Grotto Inn (Garden Cottage) for our first trip to Kauai. The cottage and grounds were absolutely perfect for our needs. Kapaa is an easy traveling distance to both the northern and southern/western parts of Kauai and the Fern Grotto Inn made a great home base from which to do this. Other guests were staying at the other cottages on site but it still felt very private and secluded. Lots of great amenities made it feel more like a home than an Inn: Laundry on site, several gas grills, and a large supply of boogie boards, coolers, beach chairs, snorkeling gear to borrow. Cottages also have small thoughtful touches in them shampoo, bodywash, dish soap and fresh sponges (who wants to buy dish soap for just a few days??), coffee, guidebooks, beach towels and we even had a box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts in our room (which we devoured). There are even mango trees on site and Paul the owner encourages you to eat them if there are any ready to eat. We will definitely stay here again when we make it back to Kauai. No complaints!

Quiet B & B in local neighborhood. At base of Sleeping Giant mountain area, near Kappa. This is more like a small 1 bedroom apartment. Stocked with many cooking utensils and a gas grill ready to go. Loved having a washer and dryer in the apartment. David and Linda helpful hosts for info about the island. Great outdoor space overlooking a small stream.

We stayed at the Canal B cottage for 7 days. It is very comfortable and private. The only thing inconvenient about the Inn is finding it - the entrance isn't well marked. The location is close to everything in Kapa'a. I felt like we were staying in a private home during our stay. It is only a few miles from the Lihue airport. Thanks Paul for a great vacation stay on Kauai.

Fern Grotto Inn is actually a grouping of cottages a block from the beach, just south of Kapaa, on the beautiful island of Kauai. It can be a little difficult to find, as there are no signs announcing the Inn, but that adds to the privacy and tranquility of the setting. Our cottage was the perfect size, and the only one without a full kitchen, but the microwave, refrigerator and other kitchen supplies more than satisfied our needs. The cottages are all air conditioned, but with the soft island breezes at night, we had no need for it. The beach is not one of those that have lifeguards, but we felt confident enough to swim there when the ocean was calm. The Inn is conveniently located near stores and restaurants. After staying there I could not imagine staying at one of the larger resorts. If you desire privacy, a romantic setting and just kicking back, this is the place for you!

Fern Grotto Inn is a wonderful place to stay, but i hesitate telling anyone this for fear that you all will find our secret getaway on Kauai---Paul and his wife are wonderful hosts---such a beautiful place:-)

My husband and I loved this property. It is small, convenient, and intimate. We enjoyed the fact that there are only four cottages on the property and that the growns were like a backyard at home. The location is perfect (about halfway between Lihue and Kapaa), across the road from a lovely beach, across the river from Smith Family Gardens, and 100 paces from the Wailua River Tours. The only drawback to the Fern Grotto Inn is that it is not a resort. We didn't have maid service during our stay, but we did have to pay a $100.00 cleaning fee. So be sure to budget that into your travel expenses (we didn't, because the bill came the day we were checking out). We had to use the cash we were going to use to pay the extra baggage fee from the airlines (put that on credit card). If wouldn't have been a big deal if we had known. I wouldn't have spent 3-hours cleaning the cottage that morning and would have left it the way it was when we woke up.I don't want to be negative, because the rest of the trip was perfect. I just don't like expensive surprises.
