We understood the area of Hamburg in which we were staying, so the comments and score for the area around the property will never be 5-star.
However, we do expect levels of customer service, cleanliness, and that what has been described is being delivered. These weren’t and the rating scores reflect this.
The hotel mentions this for some rooms, so we chose and paid a premium for a quiet room that did not give this warning. Well, after settling into bed we were awoken by nightclubs and street noise that continued through the night.
I contacted Hotels.com to report and they suggested that I dressed and complain to reception. I was in bed. I’d been missold. I expected them to make my complaint. I didn’t expect either a room change or a hotel change, or the nightlife to be stopped at 01.00.
Hotels.com offered a refund. This has yet to be processed.
The room was basic.
Customer service at reception was poor - we waited 15 minutes to be checked in.
Buyer beware - both in respect of the hotel and the supposed Gold service through Hotels.com.
The recent Expedia, Bookings, Hotels etc changes have not left me impressed so far in my regular travels.

We got little rude service at the check in
Reception staff , when we arrive wednesday 28 august , but rest of the days the other staff was nice..
Great location for drinking and strip clubs , also near different restaurants

Not family friendly at all. If you are in Hamburg for the first time, you probably have no idea that this hotel in located right in the middle of sex clubs and main red light street. No air conditioning when windows are closed and so much noise that you can’t sleep when the windows are open. The cleanness was not deep and proper. Breakfast was below average. In overall this hotel is overrated.
The staff were friendly and helpful and the location is close to center.

Great hotel if you are looking to experience the Reeperbahn; literally you will be in the middle of the action. I had a courtyard room, so I did not have a problem sleeping. The staff is nice and the hotel clean, beds comfortable and the breakfast was quite adequate. I have never had a hotel room that has no fridge, no kettle, no coffee/teas, no water; this room had nothing however they let me get hot water in the breakfast area whenever I wanted. Staff was kind and offered me free beer in exchange for my displeasure around no coffee/tea/water/fridge in the room.

The hotel itself is pretty good considering the price, and the staff are friendly and helpful. But the area is a lot worse than I expected - while some say that this location is the "party street" and only a few blocks down are the "bad parts", this part is actually smack in the middle of the red light district. The partying/sex shops isn't the problem, especially at night because it's very lively. But in the morning, the whole street is a deserted wreckage filled with trash, crazy homeless people shouting/staring, and the smell of urine. And it is like this for at least a few blocks whichever direction. So maybe this is the right vibe for some people, but definitely not for me.
A few other things to note:
-they have free fruits and hot water that you can get any time, which is much appreciated.
-the breakfast has a good variety of selection, but I didn't dare touch the meats that are left, uncovered, on the table with flies flying around.
-it is very loud at night even with the windows all closed, and you can feel the vibration of club music beats on the bed. I didn't mind too much cuz I sleep easily and brought ear plugs, but it will be a problem if you're a light sleeper.

Cheap and cheerful hotel. Some of the reception staff are good, some unfriendly and make you fell like they are doing you a favour by serving you. Generally, the hotel has a tired feel.

Me and a friend booked this hotel for our birthday weekend and were definitely not disappointed! WOW! The staff (guys) are amazing in service and helped out with whatever we needed help with! So happy and friendly all the time.
On our birthday one of the guys gave us a bottle of sparkling wine, balloons, birthday song and a cake! Thank you so much again!
It’s a really good location, in the middle of everything. The room was very clean and the bathroom very fresh! We got a room with windows facing the party street and it didn’t disturb at all when we had the windows closed.
We didn’t try the breakfast because we’re hangover every morning haha.
I don’t know if it’s a thing in Germany or just the hotel’s policy but we had a friend visiting us in the room and we had to pay €20 for him and he had to register at the reception. Strange and I think it’s too much.
It’s also our first time visiting Hamburg but for sure not the last!

I booked two rooms with 3 beds in each. When we arrived, we were told that we were given two rooms with one bed each and that a cot would be fit into the very small space, and that if we didn’t like it we could go elsewhere. The check in person also told us we had to separate into rooms based on gender, and snapped at me to get me to come to the front later on. The rooms were filthy, there was pee in the toilet in one room when we arrived and visible excretions on the wall above the bed. It’s also to be noted that the surrounding area is extremely loud overnight and loud club music shakes the rooms until 8am. The other staff members during our stay were more helpful, but I felt really disrespected at check in. The rooms were also not cheap, so I would’ve expected to at least get what was reserved.

Very decent stay with incredibly helpful staff. The hotel is located at the heart of the party district so beware that there might be some noise from the outside late at night. We stayed from a Monday until Tuesday, and the nightlife was very much alive until 2am. We were told that the nightlife is way more intense on weekends. The windows did a good job of isolating most of it though.
The breakfast was decent but not amazing. The only warm meal served was scrambled eggs. Other than that you had different types of cheese, ham, bread, ham, and apple or orange juice.
The building seemed a bit worn, but nothing that impacted our stay. For the money you can't really go wrong with this place!

Absolutely in the center of St. Pauli, near to everything including local transport (S-Bahn station Reperbahn); Simple but decent continental breakfast including fruits, minced meat and good roles; The warderope was new but suitcase compartment was too small; Tablet-sized safe without deposit, Mattress was rather old

Ok and clean hotel with good price. Excellent location in the party district of Hamburg. But get a room away from the street.

It’s not too bad especially for the price you are paying, but they need to be more flexible

Excellent hotel - thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Within walking distance to everything. Staff professional and helpful. Clean, quiet (surprisingly) with a fantastic continental breakfast buffet. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

A great location, and a real gem.
Beds are very comfy, and the rooms are well set out, ours was a 3 person room. The bathroom was modern and very clean. Shower was a bit small, but plenty of hot water.
Free WiFi, and a continental breakfast served between 6 am and 10am.
Located a few hundred metres from the S-Bahn.

The room was lovely and clean, the bed comfortable. The breakfast was good. And, due to the hotel's location, we exoected some noise but...
Our room sounded like the DJ from the club next door was actually in the room next door. The bass made the walls buzz and you could sometimes feel it through the floor. It made sleep impossible.
At 4.00am I went to reception to explain the problem but the hotel was full. The lad behind the desk told me there would be rooms on Saturday night and they would move us. On Saturday i explained this to the day staff and was told the only rooms available were in the same part of the hotel so what's the point in moving?
On Friday we had been up for 20 hours due to our early flight and went to bed at 1.00am having had a few drinks through the day but sleep was not going to happen. If you're out all night (literally all night) this might be OK but we weren't there for the 24 hour party.
The music ended at 6.00am on Saturday morning, on Sunday morning it ended at 10.30am! This didn't bother us too much as we had already booked into another hotel for Saturday night. It seems to have been a wise, if not inexpensive, choice.
There's nothing on the St. Joseph website to warn against this, or nearby rooms, and nor does the Hotels.com website mention it.
Either way, this room is a non-starter if you're spending the weekend as a chilled break as opposed to a 'get massively drunk and stay out until it's light'.
Check the number of the room or be sleepless.

Good location for nightlife. A lot of bars and clubs so if you are not in the party mood stay somewhere else. I booked it because it was within my budget. The check in counter staff was accommodating but did not sound friendly.
The room was ok but on the street side. luckily the sound was bearable for me to sleep at night. The breakfast was ordinary.

It's a nice hotel, the rooms were comfortable and the breakfast was good. Sadly it's a victim of it's location, with a lot of clubs and bars outside. The noise persists until 5am or so, and the rooms aren't air conditioned so it can be difficult to get a good night's sleep. I found I was ok with a good pair of ear plugs. Otherwise it's convenient to everything, being a very short walk to the S-Bahn and convenient bus routes nearby.

Great hotel if you like to party all night through.. super fun and safe location.. very nice staff.. it was a bit noisy from the fun outside ..but it wasn’t a big problem ...the breakfast was excellent indeed... I enjoyed my stay there... great value for money.. There is no airconditioning in the room.. only a desk fan.. the weather was ok at the time .. definitely would stay there again but not in hot weather..

My last review wasn't accepted, not sure why. Maybe it was too negative. Either way, I don't normally leave a review BUT I have to tell people that if you sleep in this hotel you just won't get a good nights sleep. It's right on the main disco/bass/party street and if you, like me, get a room facing the street, it's incredibly loud all night long til 6am. Not kidding. Til 7am on fri/sat night. OUCH. I'll never stay here again.
