I traveled a long way from home by myself for the first time ever! I felt safe. Staff and other guests are super friendly! It's close to anything you could ever want/need. While I didn’t attend, they do something different for the guests 6 out of 7 days of the week. Everything is clean. It smelled nice. Huge fan of the big windows, natural lighting, and overall funky aesthetic! Thank you Gaslamp Hostel for aiding in my unforgettable trip!!

yeah it was a hostel... i probably should have researched the neighborhood first. tons of clubs and loud bangin music thru the night. bring earplugs! otherwise, good good.

My stay was amazing!
I can't say enough about this place.
Everyone was really nice, my room was clean, the place had many amenities, all at an unbeatable price!
I will definitely be back!

The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful, and they keep the facilities clean and well organized. My only recommendation is to clean the bathrooms earlier in the morning (around 7:00 am) rather than close them off for cleaning during a peak hour (at 8:00 am).

Absolutely perfect location, friendly staff, and amazing amenities. Can't recommend this spot enough!

Can’t go wrong staying here. Cheap, lot of amenities, clean, awesome staff, & 11 am checkouts (lot of places nearby do 10am). Perfect for solo travellers

Bathroom smell was very awful, there are only 3 shower room, 3 bathrooms so all people share with it

Stayed here many times. Location is great and they have a few nights where they have activities. Wifi reception has been spotty in the past but was good this time around. One drawback this time from past visits is that their water filtration machhine was out of order. I had 2 separate stays over a 2 week span and they never fixed this. Also lots of painting going on during part of my stay. I saw a few guests with paint on their shirts!

Great place for a one-night vacation. Other guests were very respectful in the shared bathroom, the kitchen and other common areas.

The pipe above my bed had dripping water from condensation. Staff were rude.

Staff does a great job of keeping things clean, organizing events, and creating an atmosphere of comfort, safety, and socialization.
As with any hostel, a positive is that people from all walks of life and every region of the US and the world come together here. It can, however, also be a pain point (also in any hostel) as it seems it is not universally considered rude to have blaringly loud conversations or video on speaker phone at all hours of the night, or to make as much noise as one wants by coming in, going out, or accessing luggage or lockers at all hours of the night.
That being said, Gaslamp Hostel is one of the best at mitigating that and creating a pleasant place.

This was a great place to stay. The staff were nice and helpful. The beds creek a lot, but totally understand they are older so not too big of a deal. I would definitely book here again!!

Great deal. Got a private room and was very happy with the location and the convenience. Staff was helpful. I’d definitely stay here again.

Having stayed in the hostel years before I had found it to be a clean, relatively quiet, and professional affordable option in the heart of San Diego and a special gem for large events such as San Diego Comic Con. On this trip I found the hostel to very noisy - with patrons partying in the lobby well past the posted noise hours and general disregard for shared toilet and shower space (while I was brushing my teeth I saw a patron use the shower as a toilet). I also experienced issues with my check in and when I tried to return to my room for bedtime around 11pm found my key no longer worked. When I tried to contact night staff to let me into my room I had to wait for 10 mins before a night staff member appeared - during which time I noticed an open can of beer behind the desk. If you are in your 20s and want a heavy party environment resembling a college dorm this is the hostel for you.

This was my first time staying at a hostel, although I did opt for an individual room. The room was small - no frills - but comfortable. The bathroom facilities were shared but clean, and I never had to wait to use a toilet or shower. Convenient walking distance to the convention center, lots of food options in the neighborhood, friendly staff - if I ever find myself back in San Diego, this will be my first choice for lodging.

I had an amazing stay at Gaslamp Hostel during my San Diego visit! The hostel's location in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter was perfect for exploring the city. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the amenities were top-notch. The dorm rooms were clean and comfortable, and the communal areas were great for meeting other travelers. I especially loved the fully-stocked kitchen and the free breakfast every morning. The hostel also organized fun events and activities, like karaoke and walking tours. I felt like I was part of a community, not just a tourist. Gaslamp Hostel exceeded my expectations in every way. I can't recommend it enough - it's a must-stay for anyone visiting San Diego!

The Gaslamp Hostel is a great place to stay in Gaslamp. Amazing location, service and staff! Kate, Shannon, Pedro, Madison, Meg, Erika, Isadora, just to name a few, are legends and will make your day and your stay. Totally recommend staying here!

It had all the things I needed for my stay.

Location, location, location - fantastic! However, having 5th St. blocked off at both ends afternoon/evening reduces its accessibility. The "free Continental breakfast" is appreciated, but does not rise to a normal Continental breakfast of fresh fruit, pastries, toast and jam, yogurt, etc. Keep trying, though! Finally, make sure there's enough toilet paper in the bathrooms to last until the next morning. Yes, I'd stay here again; it's a lively, funky, charismatic place to stay.

My favorite hostel so far. Next time I’ll be booking for multiple nights; one wasn’t enough.

I booked a private room, and thought I would be getting a single bed with a window. Instead I got a windowless bunk bed. The walls were painted dark blue and it was very depressing. The room was also hot and stuffy. The air conditioning is connected to several rooms, so if it was cooler in my room, it would affect other rooms. There are a lot of vagrants in the downtown area. And I mean A LOT. I didn't like walking around there in the daytime, let alone the night. The hostel decor itself was very colorful and cheerful, and the staff very good.

Staff was super friendly and accommodating. Super location if you are attending a conference.
You can drop off luggage if you arrive early and enjoy the town without lugging your luggage around until checkin time.
If you want to visit the city after checkout time you can leave your luggage at the hostel until early evening when you are asked to retrieve it.

What a wonderful experience! First time in a hostel, so this may be more a review against pre-conceived notions than prior experience, but that is what I have. Ease of check-in and out. It is just a place that some people use akin to a hotel and that is their prerogative. I gently immersed myself in the happenings of the place, selectively chatting with other guests who, although there was an age mix, were mostly younger than me. I found many of them to be delightfully friendly, curious, inquisitive and engaging as they or I desired. The room is as advertised, with 3 sets of 2 bunks, decent mattresses and basic linens. Locker available and locks sold cheaply which was very much appreciated. There is a basic set up for breakfast of coffee, cream, cereal and milk, canned fruit, and oatmeal packets. If I stayed a week or more I would get my own no sugar oatmeal and a bit of fresh berries for my bfast as their options were all sugar added. That isn't really a complaint as I am not eating low carb in SD, but I like to avoid it in cases when I enjoy the item just as well with less of it. The kitchen has proper utensils and knives, pans, etc as well as enough pantry and fridge storage to make meals home as a traveler desires. Laundry room available to guests 3-10 daily. There seemed to be availability the couple of times I looked. The rate was great, not only in comparison to hotels but modern times. Bravo, great place, thank you, do recommend and will stay again!

First time staying at a hostel, and had a great experience. Staff was friendly, other guests friendly and respectful, the hostel is very beautifully kept, and has a nostalgic feeling. Shared bathroom and showers were safe and very clean. I would definitely stay here again!

Generally nice, clean and right in the middle of the Gaslamp District. Thus it can feel noisy at night if you are a light sleeper. Unfortunately the Wifi is intermittent when I was in the room. It only works well when I was near the front desk or the lounge area.

everything was perfect….. except the shower.
Loved the staff, the decor, the lounge, convenient location, the little chocolates in my room!
The shower experience was rough though. Dribble weak water pressure and it never got hot, not even luke warm. 1 of the 2 I can deal with but the combo was not ideal.
