When we checked in, we were given a room on the 5th floor and the elevator was not working during the entire stay. When we got up to our room it was not cleaned, and there were no other rooms available so we had to wait while they cleaned the room.
The service over all was substandard. During the entire stay when we left the hotel we had the "please clean the room" sign on the door, but no cleaning was done.
The toilet paper ran out on day 2 and even though we told them when we left the hotel for dinner, it wasn't refilled during the 4 hours we were gone so we had to go down to reception and get it ourselves when we got home.
The toilet was freezing cold. We couldn't get the ventilation damper to close so it was incredibly uncomfortable to use the toilet. There was no shower curtain, so when you showered, the entire floor got wet. We also couldn't use the towels to dry the floor because they weren't replaced.
One bed leg was loose. The bedside lamps were loose. No bedside tables or shelves.
Overall absolutely nothing to recommend. Although this was a hostel, I think you can expect a higher standard than what we experienced. I do not recommend booking!

Look a while to check in. Only one person on the desk and they were on the phone. The lobby is really hot and no air conditioning. Bathroom was dirty. The sink in the room was dripping all night. Taps are great. But good mattress and it isn't too loud at all. The social area seems good. Coffee is good. Lifts were out of service when checking out which wasn't fun. And some vending machines not working. But good price for private room. You get what you pay for

The hostel reception were often too busy messing with their mobile phones. Toilets on the 3rd floor the door locks didn't work and not on the "changing room" bits either. There was nowhere to put clothes while showering nor to sit down while getting dressed. Plug sockets or usb closer to the beds would be appreciated.
Overall though I slept quite well and it was ok for the money

A bed is a bed and the rooms are nice but I was next to the smoking area where people were so drunk and loud one night someone was banging on something and then the fire alarm was pulled at 2am.

Nicely decorated in the reception and bar areas, needs a bit of a touch up around facilities, toilet doors etc. Was a small stain on mattress and my sheet had seen better days, but bed was comfortable and handy light and USB plus for charging on each bed. Room was so hot, but large fan was already in the room.

It was my first time at a hostal being a lone female traveller l was a bit apprehensive but I had a really great time at Generator. Staff happy and helpful all the time. Met people l wouldn't usually meet and l had one awesome evening with a few.
It's all there for you, you don't even have to go outside. Every night is Saturday night on the ground floor, food till late, drinks and club till 3am.
your in a safe environment and getting back to bed which is comfy is no problem either. I would definitely stay again.
Well done Team Generator ❤️

Super clean, roomy, eclectic and thoughtful design. Great staff, great location, great value.

For the cheapest stay in London and a great atmosphere, I love staying at Generator. It was my third stay and even though it was a 13 bed room, it was not even half full. They’ve adjusted the food hours so you can eat at the bar later than before, and as always the staff were very courteous.

Started off bad at arrival when reception coldly stated that i cannot check in without ID. No hotels in London require ID and i never had it on me. There is nothing on the hotels.com website stating this. We sorted it but only because i got a copy of my passport from the cloud!
Room is tiny - 4 strangers in a room, snoring, farting, fidgeting, coughing, trips to the toilet, talking in sleep. The room was boiling hot too! It was very difficult to get to sleep or not disturb other guests if you needed to do anything at all as everyone is within 1 arm reach of you.
The showers on my floor were out of action so had to use other floors. Toilets were disgusting, unclean and didn't flush - same everywhere i tried across the whole building!! Had to use a local Pret in the end.
The working showers were good though - by that i mean hot and excellent flow rate - the rest of the facilities in these rooms were run down, falling apart or poorly maintained with broken door locks, toilets covered in poo, disgusting!
Having said all of the above, at £35 in central London, it was value for money in a great location (if none of the above issues to do with poor maintenance bother you at all). The facilities on the ground floor - bar, games, food & drinks were excellent although staff on service were painfully slow to serve anybody... you need to be very patient!

It was a nice place to stay due to location being near to the city centre and transportation is accessible

Very nice staff in the reception, but the building gets very hot during the summer with no functioning AC.
The bathrooms were in a horrible condition, many of them were either broken or clogged.

I was staying in a mixed dorm. The doors into the room slammed shut which disturbed everyone else trying to rest. The toilet facilities were really far away, having to walk to the area of the floor staircase/lift.
I didn’t make use of any of the other facilities as was staying alone but it done the job and super cheap. Cannot complain too much.

No bathroom for the bunks ensuite. Staff can't control the loudness of people in the smoking area. Bathrooms were dirty. Accomodations were mid at best.
This may have cured me forvever of the urge to travel on the cheap.

Recently stayed at the Generator with a group of friends. Unfortunately we left early and forfeited the rest of our stay and booked a hotel instead because we couldn’t get any sleep - it was too hot and the room bathrooms and common areas were dirty.

I booked with the Generator chain’s London location thinking it’d be similar in quality to the other location I went to in Amsterdam — incorrect assumption! All Generator hostels are not generated equally (though I wish there would be more consistency in quality across the chain).
Only one or two of the shower stalls and bathroom cubicles locked properly — all the other ones were either broken or didn’t line up with the other part of the door, and weren’t able to close.
When I checked in, the mattress and the bunk were spotted with something brown (mildew?), and my pillow was on the mattress so the pillowcase was scuffed and dirty even before I used it. (Bring a sleeping bag cover or your own sheets.) The 8-12 bed room was spacious but had dust and hairballs strewn about the floor. Also, though there was a sink and soap in the room, there were no paper towels accessible anywhere, not even in the shared bathroom.
The basement shared shower/washroom for women was right next to the men’s washroom, lift/elevator, laundry room (dryer didn’t work well), and smoking area, so it felt exposed. Oftentimes there’d be men taking a phone call or just standing in front of the women’s washroom — not the best vibes.
Staff were helpful though, and location is absolutely great, central to many bus and train stations. Just listen to the other reviews. I do think that even if we’re not paying as much as other hostels, the facility needs to be looked over and fixed up quite a bit.

Fine for the money. You pay for what you get. For the private rooms its literally just a couple of beds and a sink. separate bathroom as expected because it is a hostel. The bathrooms smelled horrible! one of four showers had only freezing cold water, and two of the other showers had no locks. But on the bright side, the first floor lobby, bar, and dining area were awesome! and the location was really good! Walkable distance to kings cross/st pancras. tons of shops and cafes even closer.

So hot in the rooms

The place stinks, most things are broken, and you should probably only stay here if its your last option

The keycard kept not working even after I've been down to reception to get it fixed, the women's bathroom on my floor was broken so I had to walk down to the basement, and the elevator was also broken.

Strange but convenient location, near St Pancras and tube stations. Staff not overly helpful or knowledgeable; however, the bed was comfortable and the shower was good. No facilities in the room. Cheap for London but would give it a miss.

Visit here often but sadly the summers are terrible for the rooms as the duvets were more suited for winter.
I did find that this time the bed had better plug sockets for charging and night light.
However the person above was maybe having very heavy body and everytime he moved shook the entire bed (unavoidable i guess). So would have prefered to have less of that.
The matress felt much better this time than previously.
There was an issue with the breakfast team undercharging. Lukily i was honest and they they a reduced price to pay. Still it was another 20 mins before that was resolved.
Overall the experience this time was a little better than last time although safety is still an issue as i nearly got hit by the door just outside the toilet as someone was in arush and slammed the doors, someone is going to get hurt if this is not looked at.
One of the hand dryers didnt work in the toilets but luckily there was another I found after a bit of investigation around.
Price was reasonable i.e. less than £27 so hence was my main reasons to stay here.

Fun place, great location. Good conditions for a hostel, however the lift broke the first day we were there and had to walk up for our room on the 5th floor. Was not fixed in the 3 days we were there. Also, just note there is no A/C and no fans and London is hot in June.

I was in a room near the snookers area so heard talking all night and smoke smell was all in the room. i left with a bad cough because all of the smoke. The front desk staff was not very accommodating they made me wait to exactly 2pm on the dot to go into my room even tho it was ready a few minutes prior and I had been there since 8 am.
The bathrooms were not in the best condition and most of the shower dora didn’t close.
Over all the places just needs a over all deep cleaning but okay for the price

Loved it! Very affordable and made a few friends.

The elevator wasn't working all the four days I stayed in. The bathrooms were disgusting, the bins were always full, the toilets were never clean. To take a shower I recommend to wear boots because it flooded with hair and dirt.

Have good food onsite and around, it has things to do to get entertained at night.
Might get noisy specially you have to share the room with some of the peeps that party all night a the “disco” downstairs.

The hostel facilities are fine, but the closest WC to the room was out of order, and in the following, only half of the WCs were working. And it was too loud at night.
Anyway, it's ok for the price you pay.

There has been no hot water and water at places. It’s dirty at times . Despite complaints nothing was done

There has been no hot water and no water in many of the communal toilets. Makes the place unclean and not suitable to stay.

Ventilation in the basement is very bad. 5 people in our room had to sleep with our door open.
The employees are fantastic the owner (rich guy lives in Florida) needs to spent some money.
