About this cabin rental
Ausable Lodge is a Waterfront Lodge on Lake Everest at the 50 acre Adirondack Wildlife Refuge, about two miles from Whiteface Mountain, as the crow flies. Ausable Lodge has 4 bedrooms, two full baths, sleeps ten. and features Hot Tub, Wood Sauna, as well as 2 canoes, 7 kayaks and a paddleboard on Lake Everest. a section of the West Branch of the Ausable River, staggering Mountain views and a great place to swim, fish, kayak and take in Nature’s beauty, as well as hike or snowshoe or cross-country ski on the frozen river in Winter.
The main view from the back yard of Ausable Lodge is Whiteface Mountain to the west and the Wilmington range to the northeast, and there are many Adirondack Chairs, two picnic tables and a dock for swimming, fishing or sun bathing. We have noted the return of our wild bald eagles to their nest at the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge, across from our dock on the the Ausable on Jan 30th. If you're a skier, the drive to Whiteface is only three miles.
Ausable Lodge has a brick fireplace in the Living Room, a propane stove in the larger sun porch bedroom, which sleeps 4, washer-dryer, fridge, dishwasher, microwave, oven and carbon monoxide/ smoke detectors. The dining table seats 8 places. The Lodge features fiber speed WiFi, which will enable you to have Internet Access for movies, social media and email. Each sleeping area features bedside lamps with USB charging ports and a standard electrical plug. Ausable Lodge rents for $450 per night or $2,800 for the week. Every room in the house has been repainted and redecorated after Jan 1st, 2024
The owner of the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge, Stephen Hall, lives alone in a separate apartment in the north wing of the Lodge with a separate entrance and parking. He spends a great deal of time traveling, looking for wolves, moose and bear, and writing about wildlife, so you won’t see much of him, unless you need help with something in the Lodge.
The Wildlife Refuge itself is a great educational place where the family will learn all about nature, from wildlife to livestock and pets, and their relationship and importance to human civilization. For example, did you ever wonder how cats and dogs became pets or which animal we developed cows and cattle from? You’ll find out here.

The location was fantastic, and the property manager was a very nice man who appeared to care a lot about the area, and was a great host. Unfortunately, the property itself ( home) was not represented well by the photos. The home is in desperate need of deep cleaning and many repairs, specifically in the bathrooms, rodents, and doors.

The lodge was great but didn’t realize we had to share outside facilities with others also wifi did not work and neither did tv. It really needed some work on the path to the river very grown up around the place

Beautiful location, great access to ausable river, great host but you will be sharing the backyard with strangers renting other cabins on the property walking through the fire pit/hot tub/sauna area of the yard and also using the same launch/dock to the river. The house is in desperate need of deep cleaning and house/property maintenance&repairs. It is rustic for sure which gives it a certain charm but there is also a rodent infestation in the kitchen/pantry that immediately takes the charm away. We caught 3 in our short stay. Many food items were left behind from previous guests and also dirty dishes in dishwasher. This is an atypical experience from my previous VRBO experiences.

Located within the woods is this rustic property, nearly hidden. With everything you need for your stay and more. Everything about this place builds upon the natural beauty of the area. The hot tub offers views of the Mount Whiteface region, including the nearby western branch of the Ausable River. Cool and tea colored this portion is about 4' deep. Accessible via a small path to a sitting area and dock this portion can be canoed, kayaked or just enjoyed. Views here include a Bald Eagle nest with views of the eagles in flight. Wind down by the camp fire or soak in the rustic wine barrel sauna to sweat a bit, then cool off in the nearby cool Ausable River. This portion is home to brook and brown trout which can be fished from the dock or by one of the available canoes or kayaks (be sure to be licensed). A nearby supermarket/gas station offers additional necessities, fire wood is available everywhere, friendliness and hospitality is part of the vibe. You'll notice how pristine and natural the region is - pack out what you bring and please pick up any found trash (what little and overlooked there is). Everyone here throughout is open, friendly, welcoming and hospitable - take advantage of this and support the local businesses, you won't be disappointed at all. The Hungry Trout restaurant and their associated fly shop are a must visit. The trip to Mount Whiteface is worth the short drive. A mom and pop pasta shop at the corner of Springfield will surprise you with how good it is.
