Cayman Brac From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Cayman Brac is an island that is part of the Cayman Islands. It lies in the Caribbean Sea about 145 km (90 mi) north-east of Grand Cayman and 8 km (5.0 mi) east of Little Cayman. It is about 19 km (12 mi) long, with an average width of 2 km (1.2 mi). Its terrain is the most prominent of the three Cayman Islands due to "The Bluff", a limestone outcrop that rises steadily along the length of the island up to 43 m (141 ft) above sea level at the eastern end. The island is named after this prominent feature, as "brac" is a Gaelic name for a bluff.
The Teignmouth Electron, the boat in which Donald Crowhurst attempted to sail round the world single-handed in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, has been left to decay on the south coast of Cayman Brac.
Christopher Columbus sighted Cayman Brac and its sister island, Little Cayman, on 10 May 1503 when his ship was blown off course during a trip between Hispaniola and Panama. He named them "Las Tortugas" because of the many turtles he spotted on the islands. The Cayman Islands were renamed by Sir Francis Drake, who came upon the islands during a voyage in 1586. He used the word "Caymanas", taken from the Carib name for crocodiles after seeing many of the large crocodilians. Many people believe he had only seen the Rock Iguanas that inhabit the island today.[citation needed]
During the heyday of piracy, pirates would use Cayman Brac as a haven and a place to replenish their supplies as there are a number of fresh water wells on the island and had many sources of food included in the local flora and fauna.
"Diving: Of interest to scuba divers is a 100 m (330 ft) Russian Koni class frigate built in the Soviet Union in 1984 for the Cuban Navy. It is one of only a few sunken Soviet naval vessels in the Western Hemisphere, and the only one that is easily dived. The Koni II class frigate was purchased and sunk by the Cayman Islands government in September 1996. Originally designated 356, the frigate was rechristened the M/V Captain Keith Tibbetts, after a well-known Cayman Brac politician. The wreck is the only Russian warship that divers can explore in the Western hemisphere.[1] It originally sat upright at a depth of 27 m (89 ft) [2] with the deck at 18 m (59 ft), until wave action generated by a winter Norwester storm (December 1998-January 1999)[3] which nearly tore the ship in two. The result was that the fore section tipped to about a 45 degree angle in relation to the remainder of the still-upright aft portion.[4] and the midships became a debris field. The wreck's stern area was essentially unaffected. The frigate is located in a sandy area with generally good visibility, 200 m (660 ft) offshore (a fairly long swim) from 'Buccaneer', on the island's north side, near the western tip of the island. There are numerous openings in the upper portion of the ship for non-wreck certified divers. Many more openings are available since the ship broke in half. The site also serves as an artificial reef. Other interesting dive sites are Radar Reef, Cemetery Wall, and the Wilderness Wall,[5] all well covered in corals and with a wide diversity of marine life.
Caves
Cayman Brac also appeals to visitors of many persuasions besides divers.
Caves are found around the island, offering spelunkers a glimpse of delicate underground formations. Steps and, in some cases, ladders have been constructed to allow visitor access to more remote caves. One cave, Rebecca's Cave, contains the grave of a young girl lost in a struggle against the ravages of the great 1932 Cuba hurricane."
Rock climbing
Rock climbing was developed beginning in 1992 and the island now contains about 100 sport climbs.
Walking and Hiking trails
Walking and hiking trails have been opened by the Nature Tourism Program which allow exploration of the island's dense Karst forestation. Unique flora and fauna thrive here and can be observed in the wild.
Fishing
Cayman Brac's waters are especially utilized for both fishing and the pursuit of big game fish”.

Clean and roomy. Quiet area with great sea views, the photos are accurate. This our 5th trip to Cayman Brac, with more to come. Brac Beach House will always be our first choice if available 😃

Rosanna was the perfect host in every way imaginable. The property exceeded our expectations as did the island itself. If I could give more than 5 Stars, I would! The only complaint was that we weren’t able to stay longer than we did to enjoy the sunsets, sunrises, venturing into the water, and relaxing with a gorgeous view from everywhere in and around the house! We couldn’t have been happier with our entire visit to Cayman Brac and the Brac Beach House.

Just returned from an awesome stay at Beach House. My wife and I were looking for a quiet place to relax and listen to the ocean, away from it all, and this house delivered wonderfully. The house was clean, well maintained, private and has a magnificent porch for taking in the ocean, rain or shine. We made use of the well stocked kitchen, as we enjoyed purchasing groceries at the island market and generally preparing our own meals. We brought our own water shoes and snorkeling gear, but we aren't the particularly adventurous sort, so we just waded into the ocean from the shore (which is right there!), and enjoyed viewing the sea creatures in shallower depths. Still spotted a ray, some squid and a myriad of fish! As others have mentioned, this location is not a sandy beach, so plan accordingly. The host was very thoughtful and responsive, and will definitely assist with questions and suggestions. But the house had everything we needed and then some! Some of the other things we enjoyed on the island were Sushi Tuesday at Barracuda's, hiking the island trails, getting fresh bread from the local bakery and fresh produce from the farm market. Every evening we were back at the house, though, soaking in those ocean sunsets. Definitely can't recommend this house enough, and definitely would return.

This was the first time my husband and I had a vacation in 7 years. I travel the world for a living and often go to incredible places. This house did not disappoint.
I think that Beach Brac House worked for us because of so many reasons.
Aside from its proximity to the water and access to the pier, the property was also well located, had ample car parking and was quiet. I think that these are the main factors I look for when staying somewhere because there's nothing worse than not being able to sleep or relax when going on a vacation.
Aside from the above mentioned, the house itself it's well equipped. There are so many little touches that made such a difference. For example having snorkeling gear and the outdoor shower as well as a place to hang set gear was incredibly handy especially coming out from the water.
I think that one of the biggest thing that won me over was the laundry. A simple piece of equipment means a lot. Not having to go somewhere to wash and dry clothes made so a difference to my mind set. I could just unwind and relax and not have to worry about the mundane day-to-day things.
Lastly it was nice to get frequent communication from Rosanna with ideas of what to do. It's like having your own concierge service.
Overall we had a good stay, no complaints or issues.
I highly recommend this property.

We enjoyed the relaxing nature of the house and island… if you are looking to dive, snorkel, hike, and relax by the ocean, Brac Beach House was wonderful… the house is just as pictured, secluded, and stocked with everything you could need, from first aid kit, spices, pots/pans, storage containers, beach towels, grocery bags, and a cooler. The owners are great about recommending activities and dining options… perfect off the beaten path vacation..

Wow! Where do I start? Rosanna & Larry's property is spectacular! Beautifully kept and furnished and right on the ocean. What more could we ask for? Well, we didn't have to ask for anything. From the time we booked and all through our trip, Rosanna provided us with all the information we needed for a trip to Cayman Brac: info on diving and snorkeling, where to get groceries, best places to eat (where and when), maps, rental cars, and the list goes on! And then, when we arrived at Brac Beach House, we were suitably impressed with how the house was outfitted. A typical VRBO rental has the requisite dishes, kitchen wares and towels, but at Brac Beach House – there was so much more! Yoga mats, snorkels and fins dishes and cutlery galore, beach towels, flashlights, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, binoculars and more. Too many things to list here. Suffice it to say, you will want for nothing!
Rosanna was also very responsive to our needs. We had a medical issue that required a doctor’s visit and she was in touch with us all the way. She took a huge burden off our shoulders and I cannot thank her enough. If you’re looking for a place to stay in Cayman Brac, look no further!

Brac Beach House is everything that our two couples could hope for in Cayman Brac. Wonderful location, impeccable appointments and kitchen accoutrements, incredibly clean and comfortable. The Beach House would work well for two couples and children also- plenty of room. Wonderful!

The property is a well built user friendly property. One can easily waste the day away on the lovely and spacious veranda overlooking the ocean as the waves lap at the shore. Comfortable King size beds provide and easy nights sleep. The home is located in a quiet area and well located to grocery stores, restaurants and “The Bakery”. A few lizards and the hermit crabs provided critters for the youngsters to enjoy watching. The house is located at and near great snorkel and dive sites. We received plenty of information about the home and the island before arriving but the available information in the home made finding anything on the island extremely easy. Staying here was a good decision and will be an easier one in the future. We look forward to a future visit.

We’ve been to Cayman Brac more than a dozen times and stayed in various beach front homes. This house is definitely on the top of our list! Beachfront of course, but also roomy, extra comfy couches and beds, a huge master shower, and a very spacious covered back porch. It is also the most well-stocked house we have ever stayed in anywhere. The kitchen, the laundry, and the bathrooms were so well stocked it truly felt like home. If we needed it, it was already there. Owner was very easy to reach and provided lots of useful home and island info. We will definitely be back to Brac Beach House!

My husband and I enjoyed our week stay at the Brac Beach House in November. The house is well appointed, spacious, and the view of the sea from all rooms is incredible. Rosanna (host) provided detailed information regarding all aspects of the house and the island including restaurants, dive and snorkelling sites, grocery stores, caves, and more. We do not dive but if you do this island is definitely the place for you. Exploring different sites along the north and south roads was part of our daily routine. The island is small and quiet which made our vacation very relaxing. The Brac Beach House is simply outstanding!

The property is lovely. The owners are very responsive and eager to help you appreciate the beautiful island as they do. I can think of no better place to relax and commune with nature away from the crowds.

If you like the pics ….
If you liked the pictures you will love the house. Unlike some houses online, this home is every bit as beautiful as the posted pictures. We visited the island for a month. Most people go to the Brac for the fantastic dives. We however, are many, many decades old and just wanted to relax, enjoy the island, and perhaps eat some different foods. Many evenings we just savored the gorgeous sunsets from the porch, with a drink in hand. The yard leads right to the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean with cute little curly tailed lizards scampering everywhere. You will probably see an iguana and maybe a few parrots if you go to the reserve. If you are looking for a big night life scene, this probably isn’t the place for you. However, whether a swimmer, snorkeler, fisher, diver … or just enjoy nature, this might be a nice match. There are a plethora of caves to explore and some little museums from a local artist’s interesting flashback to the sixties, to a small history museum. There is no signage, but it has some relics from the past and stories related to the great hurricane of 1932. There are a surprising number of restaurants available from an upscale “farm to table” one to basically island diners. Aside from the usual island fare, everything from horse hoof to pig’s tail with beans could be found on the menu. Chicken feet were also available. By the time we left I was hooked on the local bakery’s, “only on Tuesdays”, cinnamon rolls. We missed a big turtle release, but did take in the crab races. The house itself furnished us a beautiful home base with all the necessities from a washer dryer to good wifi service. There are 2 master suites and a fully equipped, modern kitchen. A 54 ft. porch overlooking the Caribbean across the front of the house. I spent many hours there in the hammock or chaise lounges, with book in hand, watching the waves roll to shore. There is a nice platform to swim or snorkel from behind the house, but you will need shoes or diving boots due to coral, rocks and sea urchins. The owners could not be more accommodating and kept us posted on island events the whole time we were there. The location is nice, mid island, between the west end shopping and east end light house. Food is barged in once a week, usually Wednesdays, so if you are staying a while you might want to take that into consideration. All and all if you want to slow down, enjoy the place with nary a neighbor in sight, this may be the place for you.

Brac Beach House April 18 - 25 2022
We just returned from a wonderful 8 day stay at the Brac Beach House. The house was absolutely magnificent and is even better than pictured. The house comes completely equipped with all your cooking needs, and has wonderfully comfortable beds and indoor and outdoor furniture. The host was on top of everything, even the current weather conditions. One beautiful but windy day we got a text message from Rosanna as to the best place to snorkel on a North East wind, she was spot on and we had a great afternoon snorkeling Hand Cut Reef. When the winds are down, there is a great shore dive right in of the House, I will send some picture took on Frigate Reef that I hope can be attached to this recommendation. This was my 4th time renting a seas side house on the Brac and I highly recommend the Brac Beach House!

The Brac Beach House was perfect for us. It was in a great location, the house was clean and had everything we needed, and our host Rosanna was on top of everything. Her willingness to share so much information helped us enjoy our time that much more. If we come back to the island, we will definitely try staying here again.

This property is lovely...bright and clean inside, and an amazing view outside. Every room is perfectly laid out, and there is plenty of room. The host (Rosanna) sends tons of great information, and answers questions immediately. Cayman Brac is a very small, very quiet island. But if that is what you are looking for, you can't find a more ideal place to enjoy it than the Brac Beach House.

Azures and Aquas and Blues -- Oh, My!!
We had no idea what to expect of Cayman Brac, we just knew that Grand Cayman had been a favorite place of someone close to us. We wanted lots of sun, warmth, aqua marine warm water, outstanding views, comfortable outdoor furniture, and a pleasant house. We got all of that at Brac Beach House. Rosanna (and Larry) were outstanding hosts who were inn touch with us directly about a myriad of things we might need or want to know. We also knew we could be in touch with the property manager, though we never had a need to be. I can confirm that the porch is "the best one on the island" with comfortable chaise loungers, hammocks , and two lovely tables (large and small) looking out on the wide open Caribbean Sea just feet from the porch. The house was very nicely furnished with all the comfort and utility guests can need or want, and the wifi is strong. Cayman Brac as an island is very remote and we rarely saw another person unless we chose to. Neighboring houses are hidden by beautiful hedges. Though the shore is really quite inhospitable for swimming because of it's sharp uneven rocks at the entry and on into the water and its very abundant sea urchin life, it is, as a result, a wonderful place for snorkeling once you've managed to get out in the water 20-30 feet, you can float on out and start your adventure of seeing all the variety of life just under the water and in amongst the rocks. And happily Rosanna and Larry had a bin of hefty dive boots and a couple of snorkels that saved the day. One downside was that the beach was not good to walk on (sharp rocks etc), so just going out for a walk meant always on a street or road or getting in the car to find an official trail or footpath. So all-in-all a wonderful and quiet respite if you appreciate a lot of quiet and beautiful shades of blue.

How we LOVED our 5 week stay in this super-clean, well-stocked home! The 3 sets of large patio doors brought the outside in. We were hypnotized watching the beautiful sunrises, sunsets, and the sounds of the ocean waves.
Rosanna kept us abreast of the COVID rule changes, monitored our flights, had the caretaker of the property stock the house with groceries that we had pre-ordered ahead of our arrival time, and then escorted us to the VRBO to ensure we knew how to work everything.
Rosanna is well connected to many fabulous people on Cayman Brac; from the local bakery, to restaurants, and the local fishermen for fresh lobster and other fish. She was so fun and easy to communicate with - and truly the gold standard in customer service!!!
The Cayman Brac people are congenial and take great pride in their homes and professions. It was a walk back in time - with no traffic lights, beautiful scenery, and friendly locals who can't do enough for you.
We will definitely be back ... and can't wait to experience this great home and relaxing island life, again!

Christmas on The Brac
A setting to relax and have unhurried family time. The island was beautifully decorated for the holidays. Access to groceries was easy. Barracudas restaurant/bar was our favorite local eatery. If you are looking for quiet and slow this is definitely the place to come. We did not SCUBA, but we did snorkel everyday. There is very little life in the reefs close to shore. The waters were choppy there on the north side of the island. We did find some calmer waters on the south side.

Best week ever !
The property was just as described. The home was beautifully decorated and was fully stocked with all the necessities. All you needed were swim suit and toothbrush. The owner and property mgr respond almost immediately to emails. There was snorkelling gear, 2 bicycles, kayack and literally steps from the water. Beautiful porch for dining or just relaxing and looking at the water. Highly recommend for a quiet place to slow down, relax and forget about everything !!

Perfect Vacation Spot!
BBH is a stunning property with every amenity you could want or need. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the caretaker and escorted to the home for our introduction. We arrived just in time to enjoy the stunning Cayman Brac sunset from the spacious veranda overlooking the ocean. Our next six days were spent in complete and utter relaxation as we unwound from life to soak in nature and tune in to island time.
Just minutes away from any point on Brac, BBH was the perfect rental. This beautiful home is equipped with every kitchen/ bath/laundry/leisure need. We stocked the fridge on the first day with a shopping trip to Kirkconnell’s and opted to stay in for our meals to enjoy the full experience BBH living had to offer. Three trips to Pioneer Bakery the first day to grab a smorgasbord of items did not disappoint either! Do not miss this place!!!
While our trip was truly about recharging and relaxation, there are many activities to be had on Brac. Snorkeling, diving, kayaking and cycling are within seconds reach right there from the doors at BBH. Ashton Reid Drive, one of the few causeways to the Southside, is minutes from Frigate Drive and leads to the lighthouse, Parrot Reserve, Bluff, and South Drive. We enjoyed exploring the island via our rental car and took advantage of having this means of traveling about.
Pre-arrival communication with Rosanna was excellent. She ensured that we had lots of information in advance to make our stay magnificent! We greatly appreciated her willingness to answer our questions and how in tune she was to our needs. Even from a distance, it was like having her host us in person. She went above and beyond our expectations as a home owner.
This vacation is at the top of our list of recent travels! Cayman Brac is a beautiful island with friendly residents, a laid back vibe, the cleanliness is unmatched, and this cottage was pure perfection! We’ll definitely be back and simply cannot wait to return!

Beautiful House with amazing Sunsets
We had a wonderful time at Brac Beach House, the house is located in a very quite neighborhood and the ocean views and sunsets from the veranda are spectacular.
The house has everthing a guest can ask for and we were very happy there.

Brac Beach House is fantastic
Rosanna and Larry have a beautiful house. My wife and I spent a week at BBH. We were met at the airport by the property manager and taken to the house. By the time we arrived I had received a text message from Rosanna. Over the course of the week she kept in touch just in case there was anything we needed.
The property has everything needed for a fantastic week's vacatoin.

Paridise
We stayed at the Brac beach house for 14 days, this home is everything you would want and more to rent. Rosanna answered every question that we had before we went, while we were there, and after we got home, her responses were the quickest I have ever seen. They are an amazing couple. The home was beautiful, the furnishings are gorgeous, the views are spectacular. The water is so warm, the sunsets and the sunrises are gorgeous each day. We cannot say enough good things about the Brac beach house. I would highly recommend if you’re going to stay in a VRBO this would be the one that you would choose. We spent every morning, afternoon and evening sitting on their patio, and it was so comfortable. They are not that far from town or the grocery stores which made it nice . They were set up with everything that you could possibly need . Thank you Larry and Rosanna for making our vacation so amazing with your beautiful home. Paul and Mary

Spectacular home and views
We stayed @ the BBH for a week celebrating 25 years of marriage. We have rented many vacation homes over the years & this is one of the best. The home is spectacular with awesome views & very private. You can't even see the homes on either side & we rarely saw other humans. The only visitors we had were a very friendly puppy, a skittish, but playful kitten, some geckos & some doves. The owners even have some cracked corn to feed the birds which I enjoy doing @ home.
The home is very well equipped & we had everything we needed to cook our meals. We found that we preferred the view & comfort right at the home and with the variety of spices, pots & pans & utensils it was an easy decision to stay in for dinner.
The water was rough while we were there & we did not kayak or snorkel, but we had many wonderful hiking adventures & interesting experiences w/the locals. We ventured out early enough & drove to the end of the bluff for a stunning sunrise & incredible views.
While much of the terrain is rough, we enjoyed the change & were always thrilled that we ventured out & pushed on as far as we could possibly go. We loved seeing the nesting boobys on our many hikes & really enjoyed watching the parrots in the preserve. There was a group of them that kept us entertained for quite a while & we captured some great video & stills.
We generally ventured out early & then returned to the BBH to spend the afternoons & evenings on the enormous porch overlooking the sea. Every day was peaceful & we felt like we had our own private island. We hope to venture back again one day & if we do we will be sure to stay here again.

It was hard to leave the Brac Beach House!
The Brac Beach House exceeded our expectations for a relaxing and fun filled vacation. The pictures are accurate, but they can’t capture the feeling of peace and serenity you feel the moment you enter the home. The view of the ocean from every room is incredible, but it is best enjoyed from the large porch which was pretty much where we spent most of our time when we were not out diving, hiking, rock climbing or kayaking!
This was our first trip to Cayman Brac and Rosanna and Larry were so helpful with all our questions about flights, rental cars and diving. They communicated with us before and during our stay to ensure we had everything we needed for great vacation. Courtney, who manages the home, met us at the airport and made sure we got settled in. He was always available if we needed anything. We have stayed in many vacation homes and the Brac Beach House is one of the best equipped. It has everything you need to prepare meals, which we did just about every evening, as we could not find a better view for dining then the front porch!
Divers will welcome the convenient rinse tanks, drying rack (equipped with heavy duty hangers) and fresh water outdoor shower. There is an ample supply of beach towels provided. Brac Scuba Shack is conveniently located on the South side of the island and the staff is great. The seas were a bit “rough” the first few days of our stay (to be expected in December), but once they calmed we were able to shore dive at several sites. Check out the dive information provided at the house for locations and descriptions of the dive sites. We also were able to enjoy the kayak (life jackets provided) when the seas calmed down.
Diving is great on the island but there is so much to do. Rock Iguana rock climbing with Angel is a challenging and exciting adventure. The view as you climb is CRAZY!!! Check out the newly opened yoga studio, The Yogi Wall (South side of island). Angel and Geri are great teachers!
We can’t wait to return to the Brac Beach House!

We would go back here in a heartbeat!
Let me start by saying that all of the reviews that you read about this property are accurate and it’s hard to write a review and not just reiterate what everyone else has said. We easily give this property 5 stars and would love to go back!
Firstly, Rosanna and Larry are excellent to deal with and are very quick to respond to absolutely anything that you ask. Managers are important and the manager for this property, Courtney, is top notch!
The house and property are extremely clean and well maintained. In our opinion, the owners have really thought through what is needed in a vacation property. The house is spacious with well placed and comfortable furniture. The beds are kings with lovely linens...waking up to a view of the ocean (in both bedrooms) is just a great way to start the day. We also loved the very large covered porch across the front of the house. When you’re not out diving or exploring, it’s a great place to spend time.
My husband and I come to the Brac to dive and this property is extremely well set up for this activity. There is a large rinse tank with a well placed and good working hose nearby. There is also a very sturdy hang rack with lots of heavy duty dive gear hangers. Just around the corner from that is a lovely outdoor shower to rinse yourself off and stare at the ocean. The snorkelling and diving right out in front of the house is excellent!
The Brac, being a fairly small island, has very few locations that are NOT good, but Brac Beach House is in a great location! It’s a very quiet area, but yet a quick drive from everything...grocery shopping, Brac Scuba Shack for tanks, airport, hiking and diving.
This will be our go to property when coming to the Brac! Thanks to Rosanna and Larry for everything that you do!!
