About this house rental
Quirky & spacious, 'Old Angel' in lovely Axbridge enjoys pride of place in a Medieval Square. And offers a best-of-both-worlds location: near renowned Cheddar Gorge in the Mendip Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with stunning Somerset countryside on the doorstep - and in easy reach of three great UK cities: Bristol, Bath & little Wells.
With wood-burners, a large rambling 'secret' garden & arty charm, it's a home-from-home house, loved by guests for relaxing friend & family get-together's. Airport, coast, culture & heritage sites all nearby.
A Listed house which combines a sense of history with contemporary comfort, the Old Angel is artisan and eclectic in style - flagstone & wood floors, old fireplace or two, scattering of beams, up-cycled furniture, vintage & arty decor.
With a Mediterranean style courtyard for al fresco dining/BBQ area, there's plenty of outdoor space to relax in.
Hidden away from the house and past the Little Angel annexe at the rear of house, is a large and secluded 'secret' garden, with steps leading up to various terraces. Do note that another guest or family member occasionally stays in the apartment, which has it has its own separate entrance & won't impact on your stay in the house. The entire rambling garden is yours to enjoy. Please note: not suitable for unsupervised youngsters.

We have just arrived back from a weekend in this beautiful house. It was a reunion of 8 school friends and we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect house in a beautiful location.
The house was so well equipped with everything we needed for our weekend. The house is beautifully decorated with so much space. The outdoor space was amazing and the garden just kept on going.
We highly recommend this house and had a perfect weekend away.

Facilities very good. Everything we required for our stay, including bedding, towels, blankets, etc. Beds very comfortable and clean.
All equipment and utensils needed were available, including use of condiments, spices and oils.
Local amenities were great. Local pub and supermarket for all essentials.
Hosts very friendly and accommodating. Had clear expectations and instructions for each room and facility available.
Highly recommend the house and hosts.
Fantastic stay.
Thank you.

Booked this beautiful house for a birthday weekend and it was simply great. A great location and a warm friendly pub just steps away. We loved it, Saturday morning was amazing as the Farmers Market was on the doorstep.
The only regret was not being able to enjoy the wonderful garden as we went in November as I expect it would be outstanding in the summer.
Totally recommended.

The Old Angel is amazing, a spacious, cosy property full of character and charm. Ideal position, close to pub, shop and a tasty breakfast. Would wholeheartedly recommend a stay at The Old Angel, in fact I think we'll all be back.

Couldn’t have been better apart from if we could have stayed longer

We had an amazing stay at the old Angel. The house is really cute, but spaciyenough for a group of 9 adults. After a long day walking through the Cheddar Gorges, it's the perfect place to get back to, cook a 3 course meal in the fully equipped kitchen, after which we relaxed and played games next to the log fire. We fully recommend, and would stay here again when visiting the area again. Thank Marianne & Simon for having us!

From the moment we walked into the property we were amazed. Every room was an exciting surprise! Such a fantastic place to say. We met Marianne who was lovely - don't forget to explore the garden!
Thank you for everything

We had a lovely weekend in this very special property. A 16th century former inn, loads of space - no low ceilings despite its age! Best equipped kitchen I have ever stayed in. Lovely log fires, comfortable beds and beautiful art and 'objets' all around the house. The house is in a very pretty village which is full of history and historical buildings. We ran around the reservoir, had a great trip to Wells and did lovely walking from the house onto the hill behind it. Could not recommend it more.

We were all thrilled with our stay at Old Angel. As well as character, there was comfort. We lacked for nothing. We were blessed with brilliant weather and enjoyed time in the beautiful rustic, terraced gardens . Axbridge is a delightful village & we enjoyed chatting with the friendly locals. Would highly recommend Old Angel to anyone,, I really hope we can come back here again.

We all had a wonderful stay at the Old Angel. It's a fantastic old building, that the owners clearly love and have put a lot of time and effort into decorating.
Our children had a great time exploring the garden and looking for frogs as well as trips to Wookey Hole and the coast. The adults enjoyed runs from the front door and relaxing both inside and out.

A fantastic place to stay!
We enjoyed our weekend immensely, everything we needed was either provided or available in the medieval square! The house was comfortable and large enough for the five of us to feel like we had our own space. The weather was good so we were able to enjoy the garden as well as the local pub....four doors away! Thank you Marianne for your clear instructions both by email and left in places around the house. I will definitely be looking at my diary to book again!

The Angel totally surpassed our (already very) high expectations. Amazing character features, beautifully furnished and superbly equipped - all this and more ensured every member of our family group thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The only downside was the 2 nights went way too quickly!
Axbridge medieval square is a delightful place, steeped in history and a friendly welcome and excellent service and meal were enjoyed in the Lamb pub just a stroll away.
The owner, Marianne's thoughtful, generous and timely communication was the icing on the cake, especially as we were arriving on the day of the worst storm in 30 years!
Already hoping to return in the not to distant future and properly explore the garden!

A charming House for all generations
We were lucky to find the Old Angel House for our family of seven covering three generations to gather together again after lockdown. We were attracted to the house on the booking site and have to say it lived up to our expectations and more. It is delightful in its quirkiness and history, ideal in its spaciousness and equipped with every essential many times over. We were all fascinated by the objet d’art to discover in every room. Presentation and cleanliness could not be faulted and communication with Marrianne made easy.
Thank you for a lovely experience in this gorgeous old house in the Medieval Square of Axbridge

We had the most amazing time at The Old Angel. It was the most well equipped place .
From the moment it was booked the owner was so helpful answering any questions I had and also giving so much information about the immediate surroundings. The house was so well equipped and so many bedrooms to suit all breaks away weather that be friend or family. It’s fabulous kitchen dinning area was the real hub of the home full of everything you could possibly wish for.
A real home from home experience, very well thought out with so many interesting things to look at giving it so much character. We would definitely go back.

Utterly Perfect
If you're looking for a relaxing time away this is definitely the place! We had such a wonderful weekend away in this house, it's in such a fab location with two pubs to choose from, a tea room and a co-op all just outside the front door.
Our whole group fell in love with the house as soon as we walked through the door, it's such a beautiful property with all of the facilities that you would need. We would all 100% recommend this house.
Thank you so much Marianne for such a wonderful stay!

Perfect Choice!
The Old Angel was the perfect choice for our family visiting from the States. It has all the character and history we were looking for with just the right mix of modern conveniences. Marianne made us feel so welcome and there were nice little touches everywhere making the house warm and inviting. Everything was clean and comfortable and you have everything just a few steps away - a little grocery store with everything you need, 2 pubs and a tea house that were all very good, friendly people and beautiful area. We loved every minute and really hated to leave. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us Marianne and Simon!

This is a gem of a property!
We stayed here as a group of 9 and it was so spacious. Lovely kitchen with everything you would need and big sitting room! Comfy beds and plenty of bathrooms. The village of Axbridge was really lovely, there was a Market on the Saturday morning which was a real treat. We ate at The Lamb Inn, in the square, which was really good, everyone was really friendly. We went to western super mare which was about 25mins in car and to Bristol for night out. Bristol was about 40mins away, I'd recommend prebooking taxis if you do this. I couldn't recommend this place enough, we would definately return.

Our Angelic Holiday Break
The Angel house is a wonderful blend of old world accomodation with modern comforts. The kitchen is especially well equipped and the combination of bedrooms made it perfect for our varying numbers before and after a family wedding in the area. Its situation in Axbridge is fantastic with a shop and two lovely pubs right on its doorstep. The owners Marianne and Simon were very hospitable and accomodating. We had a wonderful stay.

A wonderful weekend in Somerset
We were a party of 7 adults and stayed very comfortably in Marianne and Simon's wonderful home in Axbridge. Located on the market square the house was easy to get to, parking was plentiful (and free) and the convenience of the pubs and supermarket on our doorstep were so helpful. We loved the interior of the 3 story home, so well furnished and thought out. Our rooms were all very comfy with excellent mattresses, linens and towels. We especially loved the big kitchen dining table and enjoyed our grazing breakfasts there before we headed out for the day. We cooked a big roast on the Sunday eve and the oven was perfect, a great range! With only one proper shower, getting ready in the morning was a bit of a planned effort but the baths in the other bathrooms were utilised too. It would have been fun to have some board games in the living room. Marianne and Simon have everything else in the house you could hope for, the pantry is well stocked, there are a million pots, pans and plates and even a welcome bottle of Prosecco, lovely! My mum had the "best birthday weekend ever", thank you!

We all loved it.
We had a very good stay and everything was just as we would like it. The area was very good for visiting with lots of things to do.
The pubs and restaurants are all within walking distance which was good as nobody has to drive and the parking in the town was easy and FREE.

a beautiful home
the old angel was a wonderful place to stay, spacious and well furnished and stocked with plenty to do (although the area around abouts is so beautiful you're not likely to be in much!) thank you so much for a fault-free relaxed stay :)

Beautiful Huge House
We all loved this house - we had the large bedroom with the ensuite bathroom which one of my daughters described as ridiculous (in a good way). To describe the house as spacious is a real understatement; 8 adults and two grandchildren had more than enough space. The location on the medieval square was perfect; a few steps from 3 pubs and a supermarket and a lovely setting. Our grandson loved the trampoline. The house was also extremely well equipped including a large selection of dvds and cds along with enough crockery etc for a small hotel. We didn't actually meet Marianne but she sent us welcome messages. We were there for New Year's Eve and went outside for the gathering in the square and the surprisingly good (and loud) fireworks.

Amazing Christmas experience!!
We are an Australian family of 6 (2 adults, 4 teenage boys). This place could not have been more perfect for a quintessential English country get-away! The stunning history of the home and Axbridge itself, the large, comfortable rooms with their exposed wood frames, the awesomely appointed kitchen (with everything you could possibly need), the huge selection of games, DVDs, books, the artistically creative bathrooms. Everything was there to keep you cosy, amused and comfortable whilst relaxing with the family. Marianne and Simon had even placed a fully decorated, real Christmas tree in the main room to help make our stay more memorable. The locals we chatted to were also lovely and helpful. There was so much going on in the square over Christmas plus lots of great pubs and shops to explore. Nearby, the Cheddar Gorge and Caves were also a great day out. I don't think I've stayed in a more generously and thoughtfully appointed home stay and would not hesitate to recommend it. Thank you for helping to make our Christmas break magical!
