Perched high on a knoll at the very tip of Kittery Point , the Red Cottage { circa 1740 } is located on 3 1\2 private acres overlooking Portsmouth harbor and the open ocean. Located at the end of the point, it is surrounded by water on three sides. Capturing all the charm and privacy of a bygone era , the cottage has recently experienced a complete renovation , and while retaining some of the original features which include Indian shutters, wide pine paneling , and match stick moldings, it has been transported into the 21st century with such additions as an elevator, en suite bathrooms, a modern kitchen, and central heating and air conditioning.
The Red Cottage has a most interesting and historic past. Situated on the same property where the first dwelling in Kittery was erected in 1636 , the cottage has kept vigil throughout the entire course of American history from colonial days to the present. On November 2nd, 1789, George Washington came ashore on the stone pier in front of the cottage to attend the Congregational church at the head of the lane. This same stone pier { still standing today } , had been erected by yet another important figure in American history, Sir William Pepperrell, a prominent merchant and a hero of the siege of Louisbourg in 1758 { during the French and Indian war }. It was here that Pepperrell had command over a fleet of more than 100 sailing ships trading throughout much of the modern world.
During the Civil War the cottage was occupied by Hannibal Hamlin while he was the acting vice president under Abraham Lincoln during the latter's first term as President. Hamlin was stationed at nearby Fort McClary, which was built in 1689, and today remains a State Park and an important historic site.
In 1870 Admiral Farragut visited the Red Cottage while he was vacationing at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard . He died at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital later that same year.
Our great great grandmother, who lived in Portsmouth, N.H., acquired the Red Cottage as a summer residence in 1855, and we purchased it from other members of the family in 1988. The cottage has remained in our family for over 165 years. We have five boys and one daughter, and it is our plan to pass the cottage on to our children .
Located on a private 3 1/2 acre peninsula at the very end of Kittery Point , with over 925 feet of waterfront , the Red Cottage property itself has a wonderful deep water dock, pier, float system, and boat house. At the face of the floats the depth is 22' at low water.
There is excellent fishing as well as squiding at night from the pier under the lights . Lobsters are plentiful, and can always be made available for our guests to enjoy for lobster dinners on the dock. The location is very private with ample parking for all guests. The view of the Harbor and light houses is unsurpassed.
The cottage today consists of 5250 square feet , and is comprised as follows: on the ground floor there is a bedroom with a king sized bed, as well as a single bed , and an adjoining bathroom which may be shared with the second bedroom. The second bedroom is furnished with a full sized set of bunk beds { both beds are traditional size double beds }. The two rooms together make an excellent space for children or others who may wish to have privacy from the remainder of the house. A common area in the spacious entry hall just outside these two rooms includes a sink, microwave, and refrigerator\ freezer. The ground floor also includes a two car garage, laundry room with 2 washers and 2 dryers , as well as a spacious entrance foyer leading to the elevator.
On the main floor there is a wheelchair accessible bedroom with a king sized bed and an en suite bathroom { also handicap accessible } . Located just opposite the elevator, this room is very private yet readily accessible to the kitchen, living room, dining room, and front porch.
The tiled chef's kitchen is spacious and includes a 36" Viking Professional gas range , two sinks and work stations , double side by side refrigerator and freezer, as well as seating for 10 - 12 at breakfast. All countertops are granite , and the kitchen cabinets are cherry with leaded glass doors. A door leads to the sun porch directly off the kitchen where meals may be enjoyed outside at tables overlooking the waterfront. The adjacent formal dining room seats twelve , and is enhanced by the original Indian shutters, match stick molding, and fireplace.
A spacious living room is located on the other side of the kitchen and is separated by a central foyer. At the front of the cottage the living room and dining room are connected by a main entrance hallway that houses a powder room as well as the front door leading onto the porch.
The front porch is furnished with classic Woodard wrought iron tables and chairs as well as a full set of Seaside Adirondack outdoor furniture, to include a picnic table, eight chairs , a loveseat, and two chaise lounges . One end of the porch houses a built in outdoor kitchen including a Viking Professional outdoor grill with side burners . In addition there is a sink and a series of stainless steel drawers which are built into tiled cabinets with a granite top and backsplash . The views from the porch are spectacular; especially the sunsets!
The second floor includes three bedrooms all with en suite bathrooms and king sized beds. All bathrooms throughout the cottage have granite vanities and fully tiled showers with glass door enclosures. Every room in the house has water views, and all bedrooms have 48" flat screen "smart" TVs { there is a 55" Sony 4K "smart" TV in the living room } , and a desk with WIFI connection. The elevator arrives in a central hall between the bedrooms , and a traditional stairway leads back down to the living room and front foyer.
In addition to the main house there is a classic Maine dock house . A great place for those that want to stay up late to reconnect or to fish off the dock under the lights. The spacious decks adjacent to the dock house are a wonderful spot to have a picnic or lobster dinner at the water's edge .The dock house is only available from Memorial Day through mid October .
Upon entering our driveway there is a wonderful unobstructed view looking out the mouth of the harbor to the open ocean. Fort Constitution Lighthouse (the terminus of Paul Revere's ride) is on the right side of the entrance to the harbor , and Whaleback lighthouse { 1830 } is on the left side . Situated at the very tip of Kittery Point , with views out to sea as well as the whole harbor, guests can enjoy both sunrise and sunset.
Kayaks and a rowboat are available for guests' use . In addition we can offer harbor cruises, whale watching , deep sea fishing , and picnics aboard our 32" boat, the "Anna D". We also have a 24' Carolina Skiff center console boat available for rent to qualified guests. Our locally renown lobster rolls, fish chowder, fresh fish, and live lobsters may be ordered in advance. Award winning pies and cakes homemade on the premises are also available for our guests.
The White Mountains of New Hampshire are only one hour and a half away. Nationally famous L.L.Bean and Cabelas are within 45 minutes. Portsmouth, NH, with it's fabulous restaurants, shopping, live theater, beautiful parks and historical sites, is just across the harbor. The famous Ogunquit { Maine } playhouse is twenty minutes distant by car. There are several undiscovered sand beaches right nearby ----- mostly known only to locals --- and the wonderful York beaches and Wild Kingdom are located in the neighboring town of York, Maine.
For rainy days one could consider shopping at the renowned Kittery Outlet Malls. During part of June, July , August, and September rentals are by the week --- from Sunday to Sunday.

Our family and friends stayed in The Red Cottage for a month. The place is beautiful, very comfortable, spotlessly clean, in a perfect location with remarkable views, and has delightful and responsive hosts. We have stayed in many homes in Maine and without question The Red Cottage is the best.
We plan to stay 5 weeks next year.

We rented the Red Cottage for 2 weeks with friends and family coming and going. The Cottage is a treasure of a place and Jim and Tudor Austin are attentive hosts. All of us loved everything this very historic place offered. We are telling all our friends!!!

As a retired nurse of 40 years, I've met hundreds of people and families. I have NEVER met two kinder souls than Jim and Tudor. They were so lovely, caring and easy to work with. The property was amazing, the food outstanding...lovingly prepared and served by them in their home. We were treated like family. If you are planning a small, intimate family wedding, this is the place to be!

This was by far the greatest sibling trip we have had in our 15 years of getting together. We have 5 siblings along with spouses who gather once a year for 5 days. The red cottage was a perfect setting. Everyone had a king size bed with their own bathroom. The huge kitchen made meal time very enjoyable. The spectacular view from the front porch was very relaxing especially the sunrise. Jim and Tudor made us feel like family right from the beginning. The lobster dinner with all of the appetizers and sides was the best seafood my family has ever tasted. Everyone has stated that this should be our yearly trip. We cant wait to come back. Thank you so much Jim and Tudor.

Wonderful views off a fabulous porch. Location is excellent. The Red Cottage has a nice large kitchen and many spaces for our friend’s reunion to talk and reconnect. Overall we were pleased.

Beautiful home with plenty of room for 6 couples. Extra large kitchen. We loved the back porch overlooking the bay. Comfortable beds. Extra large towels in all bathrooms. We highly recommed this location. Please be aware you are required to have all towels washed, dried and folded and the bed linens started in the washer before 10am checkout

We rented this property for my daughter's wedding. We spent the week before the wedding finalizing plans, including meeting with our hosts, Tudor and Jim. They not only catered a fabulous meal for our 50 guests, but Tudor made a beautiful wedding cake she decorated from a picture my daughter gave her. All in all - the bride and groom were happy with all the arrangements, making their dream wedding come true! A wonderful memory! Thank you, Tudor, Jim, and family!

We had an incredible stay at the cottage. The home was spectacular and perfect for our family of twelve. The accessibility with ramps and an elevator worked perfectly for family members. Jim and Tudor were most accommodating and helpful. The view from the porch was lovely and we enjoyed relaxing on the porch. All in all, we couldn’t have asked for a better place to spend our vacation. It was delightful, cozy and historic.

Upon arrival we knew this would be an idyllic setting for us even before entering our beautiful home away from home.
Pulling in to the driveway overlooking manicured lawns and huge trees, your eyes come to rest at waters edge where a whole other world is taking place. We were blessed to experience, if only for a week, the world by and on the water. James (Jim and Tudor's son) took us on an excursion one morning. He was the perfect captain with giving our small group tidbits of history with just the right amount of space for reflection and relaxation.
The property alone is rich in history, but we managed to get out and about for a few sightseeing adventures.
Our hosts, Jim and Tudor prepared an excellent meal in their home for us mid-week. Lobster rolls, whole belly clams (Chef Jim), and lemon Blueberry cake(Tudor's specialty). Although the food was delicious, our highlight of the evening filled with laughter was the company of our hosts whose personalities were delightful!
Five Star Hosts, Five Star Property!

The property was adequate to comfortably accommodate all 16 members of the extended family. While the weather impacted some of the outdoor activities, the area surrounding Kittery Point ME is rich in history with many places of interest available to visit including the city of Portsmouth, one of America's oldest.

We booked the Red Cottage for a week with friends and family, culminating with our son's wedding on the property. I can't imagine a better place to stay or a more beautiful venue for our special event.
The cottage itself is well appointed and super-clean. The large eat-in kitchen and additional dining room were perfect for our group of 12. We spent a lot of time on the large porch reading, napping, sunning, and just generally enjoying the weather and the amazing views.
The bedrooms are large with high quality furnishings and linens. The whole experience was like staying in an elegant home, and not like a typical short term rental.
In addition, our hosts were pleasant and attentive.
Only two notes for those thinking of a stay: (1) the bedroom with the bunks also contains the stairwell from the ground floor to the main floor - probably fine for a kids room, but a little "high traffic" for an adult room, and (2) the boat house is... a boat house - even though it has a bed, I would think twice about having anyone sleep there (cute and clean, but very musty and no bathroom).
We look forward to returning to the beautiful Red Cottage again in the future!

We rented, to have a lovely home for days leading up to our daughters wedding and have the bridesmaids stay and get ready together. Everything was perfect! The kitchen was amazing and the home was totally equiped for entertaining friends and relaxing on the large wrap around porch. The grounds were beautiful and well kept. Jim and Tudor hosted rehearsal dinner at their home and knocked it out of the park!

We had a great lobster dinner that they prepared that was both relaxed and very yummy.

We had a family gathering to celebrate Easter and the place was excellent. The location was beautiful--we enjoyed the sunsets and watching the seals hang out during low tide. We had an epic easter egg hunt (those rocky outcroppings made for some excellent hiding places!) and the kitchen and dining area made our dinners very easy to prepare and enjoy. I wish we could have stayed longer and would love to return when it's a bit warmer to enjoy the water, but overall very happy with everything.

The hosts and the property were everything we had hoped for.
The owners were very attentive and did everything they could to make our stay pleasant and were very helpful in addressing our travel issues. Thanks so much, we will be back the next time we
gather near Boston.

We stayed for a large family getaway… great property that slept 12… everything worked and the decor and location were great for this extended family. The decor fit nicely with a family of naval traditions and outdoorsmanship.

The house worked great for our needs for our daughter's wedding. Plenty of room, worked great for having the 2 grand's running around. We had a family medical emergency en route to the house, so it changed the 'way' we lived slightly, but if you have some medical issues to deal with this is the perfect house for you to rent. Plenty of cooking items in the kitchen, which was a delight for our group - we all greatly enjoy cooking together as a family activity.

Nice setting and home. The beds were comfortable, the grounds inviting. Plenty of room for 8 adults, three toddlers and three dogs. There were dogs on either side of home so we did not feel comfortable with letting our dogs off leash.
Enjoyable watching sailboats, kayaks and one huge ship go by.
The highlight of the trip was dinner for 9 prepared by Jim and Tudor. It was soup to nuts and sumptuous. Thank you Jim and Tudor, there is still talk of that memorable meal.

We rented the Red Cottage for the week of our wedding and hosted two different events there, including the ceremony. The property is stunning while the house is beautifully decorated, comfortable, and well maintained. We comfortably slept 8 adults and 3 children with room to spare. The kids loved climbing on the rocks looking for crabs and walking on the private beach searching for sea glass. However, the most exceptional part of our experience revolved around working with Jim, Tudor, and their wonderful family.
The planning process (beginning approximately a year in advance) was smooth and uncomplicated. From our first meeting where we discussed general event scheduling to the last meeting where we finalized menus, we always left with an overwhelming feeling of warmth, humor, and confidence that our upcoming celebration was in the best possible hands.
Our trust was not misplaced! We were consistently blown away by the quality of the food and how friendly and accommodating everyone was while helping with the events. There is a good reason that Jim and Tudor do all the catering for private events themselves. They are experienced, passionate, talented, and singularly focused on delivering the best possible experience for their guests. They listened carefully to our preferences for each menu while adding their own input and recommendations. The result was a pair of meals that were sensational.
From the cocktail party hors d'oeuvres to the elegantly decorated cake, the food was absolutely delicious and the service was without fault. One of our favorite memories was how Tudor made sure that my wife and I were able to try each and every item on the menu (especially the ones she knew were our favorites!) whether we were being pulled away for pictures or greeting our guests. Their personal touch and genuine investment in our happiness shone through in every aspect of our visit.
As with any good vacation, we were sad to leave. Most of all we miss sitting with Jim and Tudor at their kitchen island talking and laughing, always accompanied by a cup of coffee and a piece of cake or crumble that just happened to be handy upon our arrival. We cannot thank our attentive and gracious hosts enough for making the week of our wedding truly unforgettable. We cannot wait to return!

The Red Cottage is a truly a premium place to stay. From the spacious grounds to the well appointed granite kitchen, everything about this house felt comfortable and upscale. The Austin family was very warm and welcoming, the best host experience yet for us. The location and views are superb.
We just got back but are already talking about returning next year. Well worth it.

STUNNING HOME, FABULOUS HOSTS
This was our second year staying at the Red Cottage and it did not disappoint. The home is the perfect place to gather with our extended family. There is plenty of room for everyone and endless things to do, including kayaking, relaxing on the porch, shopping/eating in Kittery + Portsmouth, and enjoying the property. Jim and Tudor are exceptional hosts!

Amazing Family Reunion
Just spent the last week in paradise! Home was large enough to accommodate 3 family units with room to spare. Squeaky clean and fully furnished. Jim and Tudor were exceptional hosts. They prepared the most delicious seafood and desserts for us (the lobster was awesome, but the broiled clams were over the top!). Tudor’s cakes and pie were devoured 😂. The setting is picture perfect. And, the sunsets were glorious! We went into Boston for a day to sightsee and to Portsmouth a couple of times, but mostly stayed close to “home”’. Jim took us out for a harbor cruise and lobster roll picnic. Absolutely delicious! The week flew by way too fast😢

Coastal Maine Getaway
We spent 6 nights in Maine at Jim and Tudor's Red Cottage.
The home is very spacious, clean and comfortable with spectacular water views. We spent a lot of time hanging out on the back covered porch ( morning coffee, end of day lounging and sunset watching). Jim and Tudor were gracious hosts and were readily available to answer any questions that we had along the way. We shared the house with extended family. Two adults and three young kids shared the bottom floor of the home which has a master bedroom ( King and twin) next to another bedroom with 2 full size bunk beds. Our 75 year old Father stayed on the main floor in the Accessible bedroom which worked out very nicely for him. My husband and I, along with our twin 18 year olds shared the upper level of the home ( 3 bedrooms all with King size beds). All of the bedrooms are nicely sized and have ensuite bathrooms with the exception of the lower level bedrooms. The layout of the home gave everyone privacy at the end of the day as we each had separate floors . We did a lobster bake at Tudor and Jim's residence one evening and everything they prepared was delicious ( Clam chowder, Caesar salad, lobster, clams and Tudor's Homemade Carrot Cake. We used the house as a base to do day trips to surrounding towns like York , Ogunquit and Portsmouth. Do make reservations on Resy to have lunch and/or dinner at Frisbees in Kittery Point. The food and location cannot be beat ( we went twice). We also dined at Chauncy's Creek ( Kittery), A Stones Throw ( York), and When Pigs Fly ( Kittery). We look forward to going back next year!

A glorious week at the Red Cottage!
Jim and Tudor are kind and gracious hosts, who go above and beyond to ensure their guests have a wonderful stay. We highly recommend the lobster dinner, which they prepare for guests in their home (next door to the Red Cottage). They are former restaurant owners, and it shows! It was the best seafood dinner we've ever had!
Our time at Kittery Point was incredible. We walked or drove around the charming town, with its beautiful homes, lighthouses, and forts, most of which are older than the United States. With sunny skies an daytime temperatures between 65-80, we had many opportunities to kayak and play in Phyllis' Cove with our 3-year-old and teenage daughters, see a beautiful, full moon from the Point itself, and we had an outstanding fishing trip with Jim and Tudor's son, James and his lovely wife and first mate, Sara. We caught several 2-foot-plus striped bass, and Jim prepared the one 28-incher that it was legal for us to keep and eat. It was delicious, which came as no surprise after the wonderful lobster dinner.
Lastly, I'd like to briefly describe my brother-in-law's experience. My brother-in-law is a quadriplegic, and the stay at the Red Cottage was just as outstanding for him as it was for the rest of us. The Red Cottage is equipped with an elevator, ramps, and a roll-in shower, so if you'd like to have a disabled family member or friend come along on your trip to Kittery Point, you can rest easy if you stay at the Red Cottage.
Thanks for everything, Jim, Tudor, James, and Sara!

Family vacation
Overall - outstanding!
On arrival, communication with the host was harder than necessary because the app didn't show a phone number. It wasn't impossible, just harder.
Jim was very helpful with all our questions and guide us well. The place was very clean and well equipped. We had the entire family, 9 people, never felt crowded. We will look forward to seeing Jim and Tudor again.

A joy from start to finish
We rented this property for a 12 person family reunion (all adults), and the experience was wonderful from start to finish. Jim and Tudor went above and beyond in so many ways, with excellent and consistently timely communication during the planning and booking as well as throughout our stay. Plans changed a few times both before we arrived (decided to bring our dogs at the last minute) as well as while at the house (when we felt that adding the dock house would make sleeping arrangements for our large group easier), and they were not phased in the least - even going so far as to make sure the guests in the dock house were warm enough at night by providing an extra down comforter for them!
The house is incredible!! Even with a dozen adults and 2 small dogs, the place is so spacious, comfortable and welcoming that we were beyond happy. Everything we could need was there, including the small things many places do not think of - coffee and tea, salt and pepper, even baby gates to that allowed the pups to explore the deck as we sat there. The property is amazing, lots of nooks and crannies along the coast to enjoy - and plenty of parking for the 5 cars we had.
We were so sad to leave, but we will definitely be back!!! Thank you to all the Austins that made our stay so great!

Just perfect!
The Red Cottage was a perfect property for our family group of 10 people, ranging in age from 29-86 (plus a small dog). The well-appointed house was large, allowing for whole group gatherings while also providing quiet/private space when desired. Everyone loved their comfy beds and en-suite bathrooms. The elevator and handicapped accessible bedroom and bathroom were greatly appreciated. (Note that access to the deck/porch from the house does require a step down.) The outdoor space was also awesome-large deck/porch with tons of seating options, some in the sun and some shaded; great outdoor kitchen; big lawn for corn hole playing; and easy access to the water for kayaking and paddle boarding (we brought own paddle boards, but enjoyed using kayaks provided). Location was perfect too. Quiet and peaceful property in a lovely village, but super close to grocery stores, restaurants and southern Maine beaches and sites. Owners and their family were great; all communication, before and during our stay, was easy and questions answered quickly. Tudor's pies, carrot cake and cinnamon rolls were delicious and an absolute must! We hope to return!

Best Maine Vacation Experience For My Family
We just spent an extended Memorial Day weekend at the Red Cottage and we are all so rested, peaceful and satisfied from our stay. The accommodations were perfect for my disabled mom - the elevator was an absolute must to give her mobility throughout the house. The whole house was beautiful and spotlessly clean. The kitchen was well stocked with consumables, oils and spices needed for cooking - we cooked a lot in that gourmet kitchen. There was plenty of space for the 10 adults and one child we had in our group. My brother in law loved fishing from your dock and my niece loved skipping rocks and searching for beach glass in Phyllis’ Cove. The owners Jim and Tudor and their son were very welcoming and friendly - thank you so much for helping my family create some much needed happy vacation time/memories together. They will last a lifetime. We hope to visit again - perhaps next summer.

Sons Wedding Week
Amazing location with 270 degree water views. The Red Cottage is a beautiful historic home that has been meticulously restored and enhanced for todays living. The kitchen is a dream kitchen with everything you would ever need. (The 36" side by side Ref/Freezer is so nice). All of the bedrooms have ensuite baths and are oversized. At one point we had 13 people at the house and you would never know it.
Big surprise was the elevator. At first we did not think we would use it but with the Kitchen on the second floor and BR on third it was used daily.
Our hosts were the nicest people. They live next door but you would never know it.
We have stayed in many great VRBO homes in beautiful locations in the past and this is my favorite.

We just had a great family reunion at the Red Cottage! We especially appreciated the accessibility — the roll in shower and elevator were great. So hard to find normally!

Perfect 3-generation getaway
The house was very comfortable for all members of our party ages 17-80+. All rooms are elegantly appointed with furniture and art. The owner/caretaker are very attentive and quick to respond with questions or issues. We hope to be back in summer to enjoy the waterfront. Highly recommended!

Perfect way to bring in 2022!
My friends and family left it to me to find a place to bring in the New Year. After many hours of looking at different locations we decided on the " Red Cottage". We couldn't of made a better decision. From the communication from the owners to the location, and most importantly the property. Everything was better than expected. Even though the weather wasn't the best the accomadations made this a vacation to remember! Thank you for making the start of 2022 enjoyable!!!!
