About this cabin rental
NOTE: GUESTS MUST HAVE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE OR 4-WHEEL DRIVE ALL YEAR ROUND TO ACCESS THIS CABIN. 3-story two bedroom plus den 2.5 bath rustic log cabin on a fenced and gated two-acre property in a private, secluded location at the summit of Buck Mountain - almost a mile high elevation for cool Summer temps. Lots of privacy and seclusion (no neighbor's homes in view) with year-round, dramatic long-range mountain views. If you like a quiet, forest setting with mountain views and elk, turkey and the occasional black bear wandering up the driveway from time to time this may be the place for you. This cabin is not a large, luxurious sprawling cabin. It is small, rustic and charming and is really only suitable for a couple or a couple with 2 kids or 2 couples. The spaces are tight, the pine floors creak and there is very little sound proofing between floors. But, what this cabin lacks in size and luxury is more than made up for by its charm, private setting and limitless natural beauty and wildlife close by. If you like a vacation spent relaxing out on the porch listening to the birds singing or out picking wildflowers, blueberries and blackberries in the Summer with temps in the 60's and 70's or watching the leaves turn red and gold in the Fall and roasting marshmallows on the fire on a 2-acre fenced and gated property (where your dog can roam free!) and where lots of area attractions such as the GSMNP are close by this cabin may suit you. Its an 8-minute car ride up to the newly renovated Cataloochee Ranch for gourmet dining or for some horseback trail riding or for some winter skiing at the close by Cataloochee Ski Area. NOTE: Dining or horseback riding at Cataloochee Ranch, which is a Relais & Chateaux property, requires reservations well in advance; 828 926 1401 and they offer group or private trail rides and a picnic ride up to the fabulous Swag Country Inn. The Cataloochee Ski Area (open in Winter from approx. Thanksgiving thru March) is just 3 miles away (10 minutes by car). There are guided fly-fishing tours by Maggie Valley Fly Fishing 828 537 2557. You can take a walk around the surrounding neighborhood of rustic cabins or take a drive over to the Great Smoky National Park (GSMNP) with 800 miles of hiking trails (46 minutes by car to the Cataloochee Valley entrance). Download the AllTrails app for info on access to local trail. For longer car trips from the cabin it's a 51 minute drive to the Biltmore Estate and Vineyards (38.2 miles) on I - 40. 45-minute drive to Asheville. 1 hour and 36 minute drive on I-40 W to Gatlinburg. Close to the Cherokee Indian Reservation.
Note: there is no AC in cabin - but high elevation keeps it cool in Summer. This cabin has 3 queen-sized beds. The cabin has 3 levels - 1 bedroom (with queen size bed) with 1 full bath on top floor, 1 bedroom (with queen size bed) plus a den (with queen size bed) with 1 full bath on ground floor, 1/2 bath with washing machine and dryer on living room level (middle level). Wood burning fireplace in living room. Firepit in yard. Hi-speed, reliable WIFI Internet thru Skyrunner. Live feed NEST cam overlooking the driveway (link available if guests want to monitor it during stay).
We recommend you try to arrive before dark on day of check-in and to buy basic groceries (or pre-order groceries on Instacart app) to be delivered on your way before checking in as the road up to the cabin is a rural, mountain road - unpaved (gravel and dirt) and it's a pretty long (1.5 miles) steep drive from the paved road (Fie Top Road) up to the cabin. It's not the sort or road you want to spend a lot of time driving up and down if you can avoid it. If you decide to order groceries on Instacart to be delivered from Publix down in Waynesville just make sure you message the delivery person that they MUST HAVE 4 WHEEL OR ALL WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE to deliver groceries to this cabin. If you are bringing dogs you can close the drive-way gate and pedestrian gates and your dogs can run free on the 2-acre property surrounding the cabin (unless they can jump the 5-foot fence!) Have a great time in the Mountains! Sorry, no motorcycles or 4 wheelers permitted. FYI: be aware that there are Black bears in the area from time to time.

Had a wonderful time. Peaceful, quiet and relaxing. Beautiful views, perfect weather and stayed in the 60 degree temps the whole time. Loved everything about the cabin inside and outside.

We climbed the mountain road in a Sante Fe and had no issues, even in the rain & dark. Definitely need an all wheel drive vehicle, but the views are worth it.
The cabin and grounds were wonderful with fully equipped kitchen & laundry. With Cataloochee Ranch above and Maggie Valley below there was a lot to do outside of hiking.
We loved it and will be back next year.

The cabin is a spectacular retreat on a mountain. The road up is definitely not for the faint at heart but is doable with 4wheel drive. This cabin was the most stocked with kitchen appliances and utensils that I’ve seen. The fenced in yard was a bonus as I’m traveling with my dogs. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the cabin and would recommend as a private retreat.

Our Stay was really wonderful! The view from this cabin and the peace and quiet are excellent. Yes you can hear the silence. The beauty of the mountains and the cabin are like a mystical land. The cabin has everything you need as far as services and utilities. Watching the Weather come in from the high elevation you will understand why they are called the Great Smoky Mountains. If you like the mountains this cabin is it!

I could write a book about our positive stay! We have stayed at a few cabins and this one by far was the best "stocked". I don't have anything to complain about and we will be back. The host was very responsive with questions. The fence around the property was amazing for our corgis and surprising for being a "pet" friendly destination, it was picked up.And of course we picked ours up. We over packed not knowing the complimentary amenities but now know. There is all the appliances you can imagine which added to the flair. I really can't say enough but highly recommend this property as a vacation. The little details made this a home away from home!

Wow, did we enjoy the cabin! It was so hot when we left Florida and perfect weather on the mountain!
Our favorite spot is the porch, my dogs love it too!
The cabin is always clean and well stocked. Laura is the best host! She is always quick to respond to any questions and easy to reach. She has been wonderful as we made our plans to head home a day late because of the hurricane.
I cannot recommend this Cozy Cabin enough! We will be back!

This cabin is our absolute favorite place to vacation. We've been coming here for years and plan to come for many more. The stunning views year-round, the amazing property, and the lovely cabin itself have given us some of our most cherished family memories. We love our home away from home!

First and foremost, fantastic views, peaceful, and thoughtful amenities were all impressive. Thoroughly enjoyed the landscaping and nature around us! Laura was quick to respond and very understanding during our stay.
We did want to provide input on the drive up the mountain. Heed the 4 wheel drive warning! We were in an AWD SUV (RAV4), do-able but far less than optimal. Climbing the 1.2 mile private road up the mountain was much less of a concern compared to the driveway to the home. A running start was needed due to loose gravel on the steep slope which in turn also meant sliding when backing down the driveway. The intent here is to hopefully help future guests be fully prepared. Would suggest installing geogrid to stabilize the surface and hold the gravel in place. Would also note that we used a hitch mounted carrier to haul dog crates. The unevenness of the switch-backs may cause a carrier to drag depending on the vehicle.
Overall, being prepared along with safe maintained access makes this home truly breathtaking!!!

This place and location are just beautiful. Cabin was lovely and had everything we needed. Definitely need 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive but if you do its worth it. The views of the surrounding mountains are gorgeous. The property is fenced in so our dog was able to roam and run around. We will definitely stay here again in the future.

Everything about our stay in the cabin was amazing. Beautiful cabin and very cozy and comfortable. Kitchen supplies, the porch and fire pit outside very cool. We recommend very much!! Thank Laura!!

You can't get better than this cabin and this owner. Seriously!
We celebrated Christmas with our kids here, and we were pleased well beyond our expectations.
The cabin is immaculate and cozy, and the scenery here is nothing short of breathtaking. We were completely surrounded by the mountains. Unfortunately, there are no words to describe this view. The best I can think of is humbling.
In addition, Laura (the owner) was very kind, flexible and attentive.
We are hoping to return in the Fall; but this time we might not leave :)
Our experience at this cabin will rate as one our best family vacations.
Did I forget to mention that we were smacked by a bomb cyclone during our visit? Unbelievably, the mountain temperature dropped to -18, but we were comfortable and warm. The storm was actually a delight for us.
What are you waiting for? Book this when you can. You will be so happy that you did.
Sweet Laura, I can't thank you enough for your attentiveness and constant communication. You've been a dream to work with.
Stay in touch and Happy New Year!

Have been wanting to stay at this cabin for quite some time and was well worth the wait. The layout and location are the perfect representation of a mountain cabin and the view was way better than expected. Cabin is just as pictured and the host is very accommodating. Thanks again and will be back to make more family memories.

Even this time of year, with no leaves on the trees, the stay at this cabin is the best. Weather kept us in for two days but we were quite cozy in the cabin. Did lots of fishing and hiking in the area and really enjoyed the fall leaf watchers being gone. Year after year we love coming to this neck of the woods but especially this cabin. The owner Laura is the best when it comes to communication and will always bend over backwards to make you feel welcome and well taken care of.

Beautiful cabin. Best stocked rental we have ever had. Kitchen well stocked with cooking equipment. Also included numerous coffees, condiments, food items, shampoos, soap, etc. Other than using a few keurig pods we used our own coffee, tea, paper towels, and other items. Greatly impressed that these items were available if needed. The house is comfortably furnished. Quality dry firewood was provided for the large stone fireplace. Best host we have experienced!

This was our second stay in the cabin during Fall, and we loved it even more than the first time. The location is very private and quiet. The yard is nicely landscaped and fenced. The kitchen is incredibly well-supplied. The rooms are warm and cozy. Best of all - the views are absolutely amazing. We hope to return again next year. Follow the advice to bring groceries with you, and be prepared to take trash with you when you go into town or check out. The gravel road up to the house was being maintained during our visit and may have improved, but be prepared for a rough drive in places. Follow the recommendation for 4WD and you will be fine.

We had been wanting to try Cataloochee Cabin for quite a while and our stay was everything we had hoped it would be and more! The kitchen was the most well equipped of any place we've ever stayed, even coffee and spices were provided! The rest of the cabin was equally as wonderful, from the extremely comfortable bed in the upstairs bedroom to the stack of dry firewood on the porch and the wonderful leather sofa in front of the fireplace. The outside was even better. The yard was beautifully landscaped and even with rain one day we were able to wrap up and enjoy the covered porch before going in to enjoy the fire. I have to say though that the host, Laura, is as wonderful as her cabin! A plumbing leak was found three days before our arrival. She notified us right away and stayed in daily contact with us about it. She was on top of it and kept us informed. You can be sure if any problem arises she will quickly do her best to make it right. We will be back!!!

Peace and tranquility
This cabin was everything we wanted. It was so peaceful and perfect. The host was fabulous. There was record heat our first couple days at the cabin and she offered to send us air conditioning. She provides everything you need for your stay plus extra. We highly recommend staying here.

Beautiful cabin
It was a gorgeous view from the top of the mountain. Our kids loved the location as well. It was well stocked too! The drive up to the cabin was initially tricky! The owner was great at communicating with me about any needs! It was a beautiful time.

This was my 2nd stay at Laura's cabin and just as wonderful as the 1st! Relaxing on the deck watching the mountains bloom was amazing. My dogs loved roaming the property and throughly enjoyed the deck as well.
If you are looking for a quiet, remote, and peaceful place to recharge this it!
Laura is a great host, the cabin is well stocked and the view is simply amazing!
I look forward to my next stay!

What a great location to enjoy the Southern Appalachian Mountains when you’re 5,000+ feet up on top of one looking out over at many others. This is a quality-built house/cabin with quality furnishings. All needs were met and then some… well appointed (A+).
When entering the house – it smelt clean, looked clean and felt clean. Everything functioned as it should (including the heat) and we loved the access to fresh dry wood and a fireplace. Tasteful landscaping and rhododendron surround the house. The full week we were there, it was peaceful and private.
We enjoyed exploring and hiking the southern section of the National Park and surrounding areas – Cataloochee Valley, Maggie Valley, Bryson City, Fontana, Waynesville. Many decent restaurants around and Waynesville simply added even more opportunities for shopping and dining out.
It was difficult to say goodbye and leave this place but we did. The best thing was - this cabin manifested itself into wonderful family memories !

We always have a memorable time staying in this cabin. That is why we keep going back! The property is so fun whether you're enjoying time on the porch or running around the yard with your family. The accommodations could not be better thanks to the well-stocked kitchen, fenced in yard, and so many more details that you can only appreciate once you're there. We can't wait to return! Thank you for sharing it:)

After several trips to Townsend and Wears Valley, we tried Maggie Valley for the NC-side hiking trails and realized not only had we been missing some wonderful trails and amazing views, but an absolutely hidden gem of a cottage. Cozy Cabin (Cataloochee) was perfect in so many ways: well-laid out, comfortably-appointed, amazing views, wrap-around deck, crackling fireplace, spacious-fenced yard. From a rocking chair to read about Hattie's Maggie Valley memories (before checking out the historic homes mentioned in the book) to the perfect couch for a nap after hiking in historic Cataloochie... and a bathroom on each of three floors is a win-win when all return at once! We and our teen sons and small dog had plenty of room to stretch outside after a day's hike. The location is just a down-mountain to the village; a hop and skip to many hot spots like Soco Falls and Waterrock Knob; and a jump to a bucket list checked: rafting the Nantahala River (blast!). And you're centered to hiking trails on all sides. The Smokies sell themselves, but the cabin really did complete the vacation. The front porch at some 4,800'+/- elevation (on par w/ Chimney Tops) faces a beautiful slanting ridge with angling ribs set before distant smoky peaks - you just feel like you're wrapped in the very midst of the mountains. Finally, Laura checked in with us and was informative and responsive. I expected the listing to be a bit embellished; it was not in the least. One note of caution: when the listing mentions the road up the mountain as steep and to have four-wheel drive, take heed. It's worth it.

Amazing
I am half way through my 50's and have been coming to "The Mountains" , Cherokee, Maggie Valley, Wears Valley, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Townsend all my life. Even as a kid coming there with the parents as far back as I can remember. I can honestly say, this place is one of the best, nicest, accommodating, pet friendly (and fenced in) places I have stayed. If you're looking for the crowds then this place is NOT FOR YOU!!! If you want a beautiful view (all around), PEACE AND QUITE, Relaxing Atmosphere, oh did I mention a VIEW you will want to stay here!!! Hopefully the owners will allow us to stay there again, anywhere else will be disappointing!!! You do need 4 or all wheel drive to drive up the mountain, but it's worth it!!!

Snow get away
We went for a short get away to see snow, being from Florida it’s something neither one of our children had experienced. Laura had warned us that the weather was looking like a lot more snow and the driveway would be steep. We decided to take the risk, we end up getting snowed in for two days longer. Laura was the most gracious host out of anywhere I have ever stayed at. She was in constant touch with weather updates and how we were doing. It was a great home , and we would definitely stay again. Thank you Laura for all you did!

Great time in the mountains
This was one of the coolest properties I’ve stayed in. It’s at the top of a mountain and you get all the good that comes with that. The house had everything you could possibly want inside. The full bathrooms easily fit pack and plays for the little kids making tons of room in the actual bedrooms.

Beautiful place
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cabin is lovely, and the yard is wonderful mix of steep mountainside and flatter yard. The fencing was super for the dogs as well. Cabin was well stocked and nicely decorated. We enjoyed our visit to the Cataloochee Ranch and nice trail ride too. We also got to see an elk the last evening on the road up to cabin.

WONDERFUL mountain cabin!
The cabin was exactly as described. It sits high on a mountain with amazing unobstructed views. Very quiet, clean, well-stocked, and comfortable home on a large fenced lot. Watching an elk walk up the driveway and through the yard while we enjoyed our first evening on the porch was priceless! Very close to Cataloochee Ranch, where we took a horseback ride up to the Saturday picnic at The Swag. We are already planning a return trip for next year!
