About this house rental
Sometimes the best way to describe a place like Windward House is to let our guests say it for us:
“Best property we've rented for a vacation on any site, hands down.” (5 Stars)
“Words somehow fall short in describing this phenomenal property!” (5 Stars)
"Does it get better than this???" (5 Stars)
"This is my idea of perfection." (5 Stars)
"Tasteful, restful, creative, playful, peaceful and serene." (5 Stars)
"The horse and donkeys were very sweet. They soothed our souls." (15 Stars. Owner's Note: the boys insisted I include this and to let you know they each get 5 Stars)
We appreciate our guests, and we enjoy having them here. Because our focus is on creating a great guest experience. And our niche is to provide a special place for couples who are looking for a sophisticated retreat and an amazing Shenandoah Valley getaway.
Windward House is a place where old meets new, a place to relax, recharge, refresh, romance, or just chill when life gets to be too much. The house is designed to be a cross between vacation rental and boutique hotel, and is tailored for discerning travelers who like to discover memorable places. The owner (an architect and artist) has renovated the space to combine the aesthetic of Mid-Century Modern, with an eclectic and rural Mountain Log Cabin. This unique vacation home’s vibe is warm and relaxing, yet with a streamline feel.
Close to Lexington and Staunton (actually about halfway between each town), this lovely home has a large master bedroom with vaulted ceilings, a window seat, vanity desk, and spectacular views. It has two full baths and sleeps, 2 adults — our max occupancy. We do allow for 2 well-mannered dogs. Please contact us before booking for pre-pet approval. Also, please see the "Pet Policies" download, and the Windward House Policies, in the "Rules and Policy" section.
This unique retreat has been designed and furnished with visitor's enjoyment in mind including: self-check-in and check-out, tons of privacy, original art, a modern fully equipped kitchen — outfitted with a Samsung gas range and Keurig coffee maker with morning coffee or tea provided — a super comfy Queen sleigh bed with bed & bath linens, soaps, and shampoo also provided. Log on to a secured wireless network, watch Apple TV and Hulu Live, or use the Calm app to super chill. Enjoy a large sunny back deck, a lovely covered front porch with drop-dead gorgeous mountain views—all on seven private acres. Plus, there is a paved drive to get you up the hill to the house, (a real bonus in a rural area filled with bumpy gravel drives) that gently curves down to the barn, perfect for a short relaxing walk.
But wait, there's more! As ambassadors of the property, Cody the gorgeous Quarter Horse, Bug, and Jack the portly donkeys live there too, and will come to hang with you by the fence to say, "Welcome!"
Other amenities include: Central air, gas log fireplace with remote, stack washer and dryer, hairdryer, iron and clothes steamer, wireless Bluetooth speaker (for tunes on the deck), and, for the unplug-me minded, there is a stocked bookshelf lined with fun things to read from animal stories to recipes. Oh, and the cell service is excellent here! We book exclusively through Vrbo, but there is more information about the house and our vibe on Instagram, @ chill_windwardhouse.
There is a ton of stuff to do here too, everything from Shakespeare theater to the Lexington Horse Center, hiking, biking, shopping, and good eating. It is all around you. Check it out, you won't forget this special place.
OUR 2022 COVID-19 UPDATE for our returning guests, and to our future ones: I hope you all are well. Although the pandemic is slowing — thankfully — we are still currently doing limited bookings and still adding three days between bookings, so we can carefully clean and disinfect the house between guests. As the caretaker, one of my favorite reviews included the statement, "The house is immaculate upon entry." That was our goal before COVID-19, and will continue to be our goal as we strive to make our place both special and safe.
So if you need a break, a wide-open view of the mountains, and some sweet donkey love, contact me for a booking.

This is our second time around, and it was idyllic as before. Breath-taking views, calm, quiet, and just a short-drive from many enjoyable spots. Will definitely return.

This incredibly well-appointed cabin is exactly the place you need to decompress from the pressures of your daily life. We spent every evening on the porch watching the sun set while the swifts fed their babies, the cows grazed and the deer trotted. Conveniently located close to both Staunton and Lexington and not a bad drive to Charlottesville either. And be sure to check out charming Brownsburg, just around the corner

This was our second trip to Windward House. We had a wonderful time. We stayed a bit longer this go around and appreciated even more the stocked kitchen and comfortable surroundings. This place is such a treat. We can’t wait to return!

The home and property was much more than described. The home was spotless. Was well equiped. Front porch is deffinately made for relaxing.

The owner was flexible and accommodating and the house was quiet, clean, and perfect for an overnight getaway! Wonderful place to stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house was comfortable, well decorated with plenty of amenities, the view was excellent, and the 4 footed neigh-bors were a delight.
Comfy bed, lots of space and privacy... an excellent hidden gem in the countryside. Night time provided an impressive opportunity to star gaze.
Highly recommended for a chance to getaway and reset for a few days.

The hone was everything we wanted. It has history, woods in back, with deer in am, peaceful and quiet , stunning farm land around the home, and amazing view of farmland with mountains from front porch. The host had welcome gifts for us and our dog. The place was stocked well and immaculate. Our dog enjoyed the yard and eventually got comfortable with the donkeys Love bug and Jack and the horse. We stayed at 6 VRBO places and this was by far the best. We did hiking and visited Staunton . Lexington and Charlottesville. Toured Monticello, saw VMI, and Cemetary where Jackson buried. We will definitely be back!!

My wife and I are still on a high from staying at this gorgeous home!! Our host was incredibly communicative, very helpful in local recommendations, and was the most gracious host we could ever have asked for!
If you need to get away from it all, you can do no better than recharging your battery in this perfect country home!
We will be visiting again - hopefully soon!

This is the best home we have ever stayed at, by a mile. Here are my top 10 things I loved about this home - 1. amazing, breathtaking views 2. great front porch with comfortable, cushioned chairs, 3. huge master bedroom with a very comfortable bed and even different pillows to choose from! 4. Kitchen that has EVERYTHING and more 5. dog crates so we didn’t have to bring ours (genius idea!), 6. so many little personal touches like a basket full of dog toys/supplies with our dogs names written on the front 😊 7. super sweet donkeys and a horse right next to the house (don’t forget to feed them cookies) 8. 10-15 min from at least two lovely wineries. 9. Bluetooth speaker in the kitchen (nice touch!) and 10. the personalized Windward house print that you’ll find on the shower curtain! know I’m probably leaving out a lot , but seriously, this place is homier than my own home - we fell in love and we will be back! Bravo!!

This property is wonderful. I spent my birthday weekend here with my partner and my puppy. The house and property are well designed and immaculately clean. Even better than the photos. I am usually skeptical of short term vacation listings, as I have been burned by misleading ones. I was thrilled to find this property was exactly as described by other reviewers. I plan to return and would recommend this place to others. 5 stars across the board!

We have rented many homes on VRBO and this is the first review I’m taking the time to write because our experience was absolutely awesome!
You will love your stay! The house was very clean, well stocked, adorable, and personalized touches scattered throughout the home…including our dog’s name on the food dishes. Every detail is thought about and made us feel at home and welcome.
Thank you for the most relaxing and enjoyable holiday we have had in a very long time!
We can’t wait to return to your beautiful property!!!

I stayed at this property back in April 2022 and knew I had to return in the Fall with my husband in tow. I knew I would have an amazing time and my husband soon discovered why I had been raving about this place for six months. The house was again perfect with every little detail so thoughtfully executed.
Dee is an absolute delight to communicate with and is very responsive to any question or request. Due to my city girl ignorance (long story), Michael had to visit the property and was so kind and friendly despite being slightly inconvenienced (he is also a tremendous artist!). I really feel like part of an extended family here.
Being here in the Fall was breathtaking and relaxing. The scenery is unbeatable and you can't help but release all of the tension stored in your body. I was very excited to visit with Cody, Jack, and LoveBug again. Next time I will bring carrots for our animal hosts (unless Dee and Michael would also like carrots). :)
We will be back again with our dog who loves this property as much as we do (and although not really curious about the resident animals - he sure tried his best to roll around in their fragrant deposits!) Ack! Bad dog!
You owe it to yourself to get away and be pampered in the most unobtrusive and comforting way. Dee and Michael truly make you feel like a treasured guest. And this place restores peace and tranquility to an overstimulated city dweller.

Words seem inadequate in describing this amazing property! It combines an amazing view, with the meticulous work by the owners at making the home the perfect escape. Our second visit, but will not be our last!

This is the 3rd time we have stayed at Windward House and it was wonderful every time! The attention to details and coziness of the cabin are unmatched. The front porch views are what dreams are made of 😍. We so enjoy sitting and watching the cows in the pasture and of course visiting Cody, Jack and Lovebug. Overall excellent experience!

Beautiful home and setting! Very clean and the attention to details were top notch. Highly recommend this property to anyone looking to relax and enjoy the amazing sunsets.

Do you need some time away from the crowds/noise? Are you looking for a place that offers quiet and serenity? Here you go. It's beautiful, colorful, incredibly tasteful, stunningly peaceful, has easy access to a couple of towns with some good restaurants/shopping, and features a well-equipped kitchen with quality cookware (a real rarity). Hang out on the porch, read a good book, go visit Cody, Bug and Jack, enjoy the beautiful view, take a drive on the back roads, go for a hike at one of many options within a short distance. The owners live nearby and are easily accessible if you need them, but they also understand why people come to a place like this and aren't intrusive. This place is designed for couples and succeeds on that front exceptionally well.

We stayed at Windward House for the second time in less than three months and couldn't be happier. They are the most amazing hosts (including Cody (horse) and Jack and Lovebug (Donkeys). We would wake up to a family of deer out front overlooking an amazing vista. Anything you could want is in the house, and Dee leaves the best recommendations for Staunton and Lexington. Really - we could not recommend this more highly. It's serene, it's scenic, and it's unbelievably comfortable. The highest of recommendations, again!

What a bucolic setting. Ideal location with easy access to Lexington and Staunton. The owners have thought of everything, providing the ideal getaway retreat.

We came to the Windward house with high expectations from the pictures, and our expectations were surpassed. The lovely house has an idyllic setting that must be experienced in person to truly appreciate. We arrived at the last few minutes of twilight, and the final rays of the Sun foretold the beauty that we would behold during our stay.
The location is peaceful and you can walk around barefoot on the impeccable lawn/grass down to the stables to greet the three lovely neighbors: Cody, Jack, and Lovebug (a horse and two donkeys).
While the location can provide you with serenity as you sip coffee on the front porch and watch the rolling hills (which can be done for hours), you are less than 10 minutes from Rockbridge vineyard/brewery, about 15 minutes from Devils' Backbone brewery, and 20 minutes from Lexington.
While the scenery is beautiful, the house itself is worth the trip; it is beautifully appointed with sublime aesthetics.
I would highly recommend this to any couple looking for an idyllic get-away. The house would also serve well as a muse for the artist (or anyone) looking for inspiration.
Everything worked perfectly (WiFi, TV, appliances, etc) and the hosts do a phenomenal job with amenities. We will definitely return to this lovely vacation home.

Peaceful & relaxing retreat, gorgeous views!
Windward House is a beautiful property inside and out. You walk into a beautiful, thoughtfully prepared property and simply enjoy! Dee & Michael provide pretty much anything you might need ... and more! The kitchen is well stocked if you like to prepare your own meals and if you prefer going out, a list of restaurants in both Staunton and Lexington are provided (along with other helpful info). It is the perfect place to return to after a day of exploring...sit on the front porch and enjoy the spectacular sunset. Having Cody, Love Bug and Jack to enjoy is an added bonus! This was our second anniversary trip to Windward House...and we will definitely be back! Thank you, Dee & Michael!

Our second stay here, this is a wonderful property to get away from it all and enjoy the peaceful VA countryside. The house has all the amenities you could ask for and the hosts are top-notch. We can't wait to return.

Windward House is a serene dream. The house is secluded with gorgeous mountain views and a completely relaxed, stress free environment. Jack, Lovebug (the donkeys) and Cody (the horse) greet you upon arrival. The house is spacious and comfortable, fully equipped with anything you could want during your stay. Dee is always a text message away and leaves tailored recommendations and kind notes throughout the house. She even went well above and beyond and assisted us when we unexpectedly had to depart early. This is easily among my favorite stays. We absolutely cannot wait to go back this Fall. Absolute highest of recommendations.

Loved it!
The property is everything as described and pictured in photos and more! We loved the setting, cool home with antique logs and modern mix. A great kitchen with views, we live to cook. Well be back with our 2 beardies, it was doggie Disneyland for them. Thanks so much to our superb hosts, a pleasure to know!

Our stay at the Windward House was a 5 star experience on so many levels. Dee and Michael go above and beyond in providing a peaceful, picturesque getaway that was impeccably clean with an inspiring creative vibe throughout! Communication from booking to checkout was excellent as well as informative for dining and local attractions. It was hard to leave this quaint sanctuary on the hill along with saying goodbye to Cody, Jack & Love Bug. We look forward to returning once again to breathe it all in . . .

My wife and I were in town for our son's lacrosse game and needed a place to stay with our dog Josie. The cabin was perfect and has awesome views to include a horse and two donkeys on site that you can pet and feed. The owner was very attentive and a great host. The bottle of wine she left was a great touch after a long day of driving. I would highly recommend this property! We are definitely planning to stay again.

I cannot recommend this property enough. If I could rate it 6 stars, I would. Every detail is so thoughtful. The property is immaculate but also welcoming and cozy. The view of the mountains and rolling hills is breathtaking. Dee was absolutely lovely and accommodating. You can tell she and Michael take great pride in the property. And of course, our welcome committee Jack, Love Bug, and Cody made our arrival that much more perfect. We will be back in the Fall and likely return customers for years to come.

Our New Happy Place!
From the moment we drove up the driveway, past the donkeys and horse (who later became our four-legged friends and neighbors) we knew we had lucked out on this unique and special property.
Windward House is a warm and beautifully designed home on top of a hill with exceptional, serene views in all directions. Evenings included happy hour on the front porch watching the sunset over the mountains and then grilling up a delicious meal on the back deck dining under a blanket of stars. Mornings included grabbing a cup of coffee and heading out to hear the symphony of birds and then watching the neighbor's calves skip down the hill.
As if the outside wasn't enough, the spacious inside of the cabin is super, super clean and beautifully decorated. The place really is spotless. The furnishings, art, rugs, throw blankets are cool and comfy. The decor is both whimsical and functional. There are lots of great books, magazines, games and candy too! The kitchen has everything you need to create great meals, which was helpful because we didn't want to leave the place. Michael's paintings adorn the walls and add so much to the personal touches the hosts have given this lovely home.
You couldn't ask for better hosts who treat you like old friends. They are authentic, funny, kind and caring. They were really responsive and provided clear instructions including simple steps to operate the TV! They also provide tips on eateries, shops hikes, etc. in nearby Lexington and Staunton.
We originally thought this would be our only visit to the area, but we are already planning a return because this was such a one-of-a-kind, tranquil, and romantic experience. Until then, we will keep the images of the Windward House in our minds as our "new happy place"
Thank you Dee, Michael, and of course Love Bug, Jack and Cody!
PS Our dog loved sitting on the porch and taking in the surroundings. Her welcome basket was another sweet, personal touch by our generous hosts.

Beautiful Charming Home
This house is the best! Sparkling clean, beautifully appointed, and so charming in every way. The owners have taken the utmost of care in furnishing, decorating and stocking their home and we truly appreciated and noticed all the special touches. The communication with Dee was so efficient and immediate. She welcomed us with a personal note and a bottle of bubbly to celebrate my husband's retirement. We enjoyed the porch and expansive views and a few great dinners in the quaint town of Lexington. We've stayed in a lot of VRBO's over the years and this one was truly exceptional in every way. Thanks so much Dee and Michael for your hospitality, your artistry and your attention to detail.

Best VRBO!
Dee and Michael have procured a perfect getaway for many of us needing a break from the hectic world. This place is the most thoughtful vacation rental we have been to. Every little detail (even for our dog!) was combed through so, as a guest, you could simply come and enjoy.
We loved hanging out on the porch and taking in the surrounding nature. We loved having Lovebug, Jack, and Cody right on the property. Being close to Lexington, Staunton, and Skyline Drive was perfect for whatever you felt like doing for the day. All of the recommendations that Dee and Michael gave were spot on.
We would definitely return again to this peaceful getaway!
