About this house rental
The MacKenzie home, in exclusive Wildcat Ranch, is one of the world’s great destinations. A vacation at this luxurious property will allow you to experience a beautiful and private Rocky Mountain environment while still enjoying convenient access to world class skiing and the rich intellectual and cosmopolitan attractions of Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley.
Wildcat Ranch is an exclusive 6,700 acre property, limited to 15 estates. As the first owners within the Ranch, the 512 acre MacKenzie portion occupies a choice part of the ranch, a lush private valley just over the hill from Snowmass Ski Area at the end of Wildcat Lake. The main lodge is 11,000 square feet, with seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a private theater, game and exercise room, steam showers, outdoor swimming pool and expansive communal spaces. Featured in the New York Times Home section, the lodge is an architectural marvel, combining classic arts and crafts design, quixotic imagination, and unparalleled luxury.
From the main lodge, there are few signs of other habitation. The lodge sits on a knoll within its own pristine valley. The drive traverses a beautiful grove of aspen trees, which leave long shadows across the fields. In winter, cross-country ski trails lead across the snowfields to a circular trail through the trees. In the distance, above the valley, one can see the the Campground and Sam's Knob runs at Snowmass Ski Area and the dramatic, snowcapped summits of Capital, Daly and Sopris mountains. A quarter mile across the valley, a 1,200 square foot log cabin accommodates up to six additional guests. Accessible by the property’s golf carts in the summer or by snowshoes in the winter, the cabin overlooks a small pond next to an open meadow with terrific sledding opportunities in season or wildflowers and roving herds of elk in the summer. To the right lies mile-long Wildcat Lake, stretching down valley toward Old Snowmass Valley.
Despite the remote feel of the estate, a five-minute drive by our on-site manager will take you to Snowmass Village and world class skiing. A twenty-minute drive deposits you in beautiful downtown Aspen with three star dining, and superb museums, music, theater and shopping. When you return to the house, a relaxing hour in the outdoor spa will ease all the pains of your day, while you drink a glass of wine and watch millions of stars emerge in the crisp, evening sky.
If you never left the Ranch, you would still experience all the pleasures of a remote Rocky Mountain vacation. Wildcat Ranch has miles of exquisite hiking and cross-country skiing for all levels. During the winter, the lake provides opportunity for ice fishing and ice skating. In summertime, use lure or fly to fish for rainbow and cutthroat trout. There are paddleboards and electric powered boats for your use. Or simply stretch out on the rocks by the eleven-foot tall waterfall that pours into the home's swimming pool next to the spa.
The main lodge is hand crafted from rare heartwood pine and stone. The interior design combines intimate inglenooks and dramatic public spaces. Exquisite arts and crafts cabinetry graces every corner of the structure. Each of the seven bedrooms is imaginatively unique, ranging from light filled cupolas to a clever pullman room that makes one feel as if one were traveling by sleeper car across the wilds of Transylvania on the Orient Express. Dark wood and leather furnishings match the standards of the finest five star hotels, with lavish comfort and design. The great room looks out on both mountain and lake from its giant picture windows, and resembles a classic mountain lodge with fireplace at each end of the room, a 30 foot peak ceiling, arched beams and Western-style chandeliers. Many a hotly contested boggle or game of charades has played out before the hearth.
Radiating out from the living room, a series of corridors lead to libraries, small sitting rooms and reading niches. Here an individual can find privacy while entertaining a crowd.
For work or to follow your favorite sports team from afar, there are five flatscreen televisions around the house, equipped with Apple TV and DirectTV. There is also a fully equipped home theater with seating for 15, and the entire house is wired for high speed WiFi. Finally, there are two private offices and several work cubicles with printers, scanners and copying machines for putting out the evening menu.
Naturally, the kitchen has everything one needs to generate a feast for 20 guests.
In summary, for getting away from it all, or having it all, or just enveloping oneself in the splendor of a Rocky Mountain experience, the MacKenzie ranch is the destination of a lifetime.

House manager made our trip a wonderful experience.

Our family spent a blissful week at Mackenzie Ranch and we cannot wait to go back. The ranch property itself is unparalleled. Miles and miles of gorgeous trails begin just steps from the home. You can take a short hike that will wind you through gorgeous aspen groves, or a longer trek that will take you to higher places of breathtaking beauty. If you prefer to enjoy the trails on horseback, there is a kind and extremely knowledgeable wrangler available for trail rides. Back at the house, a friendly fox may greet you on the driveway; you will wake up to elk grazing on the hill behind the guest house; and if you're lucky, a black bear will peek in your window. If you prefer the water, the house also sits on a lake with two pontoon boats ready for use.
Inside the home, our children spent hour upon blissful hour exploring the secret passages that wind brilliantly throughout the house. They swam daily, jumping through the waterfall that flows between one of the passages and the swimming pool. When everyone was tired, the family sat in the library or played chess in the great room, or enjoyed the view from the inviting porch swing. Each member of our family, ranging in ages from 18 months to 73 years, had an incredible week.
Robbin, the house manager, was integral to every experience we had. She is quite possibly super human and accomplished the largest and smallest tasks with incredible ease. She organized white water rafting and fly fishing with the most knowledgeable and experienced guides in the area and simultaneously made sure we woke up every morning to freshly baked croissants and fresh flowers in every room. With her help, we dined at incredible restaurants, enjoyed a delicious meal cooked by a local private chef, discovered hiking trails, and never went hungry for even a moment.
To say Mackenzie Ranch is a special place is an understatement. It is quite possibly one of the most uniquely beautiful places in the world.

Our family of 17 people, ranging in age from 62 years old to three months old, spent a glorious week at this property. And what a week it was!! We cannot say enough good things about this property. We have run out of superlatives to describe our experience. The house is beautiful, of course! And there were several sitting areas so that if we wanted quiet time we could have it. But the porch with its porch swing was a favorite gathering point. The view!! The children were so busy all week with swimming, horseback riding, fishing, play-acting, running, discovering all the books and crannies (**wink**) in the house that they never once opened up an electronic device or turned a television on.
The kitchen is filled with absolutely everything we needed to cook several meals there (another favorite). The housekeeping services were just perfect.
And the house manager, Robbin, is second to none. She answered innumerable emails we sent leading up to our arrival, she received packages for us before we arrived, she did ALL our grocery shopping for us prior to arrival (it was a huge shopping list), and she arranged for special breakfast treats for us. All the while, Robbin arranged outings, answered a million questions, and often helped out when a baby neeeded to be held.
Our entire family said it was the best family trip ever and we all want to go back!!!

Beautiful views and outstanding property!
This is truly a fabulous place to spend your vacation! From the wonderful hiking trails to the multiple mystery entrances into the passage ways between the walls of this unique property, there is really nothing left to ask for. Robbin, the ranch manager, is an outstanding chef. The lunches she prepared made the return from our morning activities (hiking; horseback riding; golfing; horseshoes, boating, etc.) an event of great anticipation. They are truly delicious!
The view of the lake and the nearby meadows make the time spent amazingly relaxing and enjoyable. Often we would see elk, bears and other wildlife right from the kitchen windows. In the evenings we watched movies in the theatre, played pool or table tennis, or spent time reading in the two story library. Overall, I would highly recommend this property for an incredible luxury getaway!

Briefly stated, the owners and staff of this magnificent home have left no stone unturned in terms of attractiveness, convenience, comfort and fun. It's unique features are indescribable, but a few specific examples might begin to provide a sense of the treats that abound; a warmly appointed, two-story library, stocked with countless titles, puzzles, and games; a gorgeous two level heated pool, with the option of jumping in from the top or through the middle of a giant waterfall; countless decks with gorgeous views; a log cabin guest house with 3 bedrooms and yet two more decks for enjoying the out of doors; two pontoon boats for cruising and fishing the waters of Wildcat Lake; boxes overflowing with costumes in a closet off the theater; daily shopping for groceries and whatever else guests might want by an extraordinary concierge who advises on restaurants, hiking trails, and anything else that might come to mind; breathtaking views from virtually every room, . . . . The owners' meticulous attention to detail throughout the house and across the property is exceeded only by their imagination, creative energy and talent. The result is a home as exciting and enjoyable for seniors as it is for children.

Accessible wilderness + Luxury: Unbeatable
We've been coming here every summer (usually June/July) for years, and swear it's the most beautiful place in the world. It's big enough for our whole extended family to come together, and there's so much to do! There's the swimming pool (with waterfall) with a view that makes the pool continuous with the lake; there are trails all over the ranch; there's boating on the lake [and fishing]; and there're endless opportunities to see and experience wildlife. But the best thing about it is the combination of perfect privacy and tranquility -- you really are in the wilderness, with nobody but yourselves for company, but at the same time you've got all the amenities of Snowmass Village literally 5 minutes away (and Aspen 20 mins away up valley). The house is wonderfully comfortable and superbly looked after, and we need hardly mention that the views are out of this world. Come once (as we did), and you'll find yourself (like us) coming back every year.

Beautiful and Relaxing Luxury Home
Wildcat Ranch is the perfect getaway for families or a group of friends. The setting is expansive and majestic, and this large, elegant home is warm and welcoming. There are several delightful bedrooms to choose from, and the vast living space is well appointed and very comfortable. You can hike out of the front door, cozy up in the library with a book or find more than one perfect place to take an afternoon nap. If you want to go to a restaurant or museum, hop in your car, and you will be in downtown Aspen in no time. However, once you land at Wildcat, you may choose to spend all of your time there. If you are heading to the Aspen region, this is the place to stay!

GORGEOUS ESTATE IN A SPECACULAR SETTING
I had to write a review about the Carlston’s incredible estate because I would love for other people to have the wonderful experience of vacationing there. The main lodge is beyond beautiful and it setting in the exclusive Wildcat Ranch simply spectacular. My favorite kind of vacation is one where I can share an exceptional home with family and dear friends. Our group of fifteen had an absolute ball in this magical home, which so perfectly lends itself to having fun. All the bedrooms are unique and beautifully appointed and the room I stayed in had a wonderful large deck that was perfect for star-gazing. The spaciousness and comfortable design of the home allowed each of us the privacy to relax on our own; as well as offering a variety of indoor and outdoor settings perfect for sharing each others company – all with spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Robin, the house manager, was fantastic and took great care of us so that we could plan our days doing whatever we wanted. She made arrangements for two amazing chefs to cook for our group and every meal was a feast. I live in San Francisco but grew up in Colorado and the summer has always been my favorite time to visit the Aspen area. It’s wonderful that the estate is so close to Snowmass and Aspen but I must confess that I only left the property twice because we were having such a great time entertaining ourselves in the house and on the Ranch. We thoroughly enjoyed swimming in the pool, horseback riding, hiking in the surrounding hills and boating on the lake. My husband and I have had the pleasure of vacationing at many of the finest resorts around the world. This estate offers a private and yet luxurious resort kind of experience in one of the most beautiful settings anywhere. If you have the opportunity to go there, just say, “Yes!”

I've been coming to the Aspen/Snowmass area for many years. I've stayed in lovely homes close to downtown Aspen, and in lodges way off in the mountains. Both have their charms.
The Wild Ranch property, however, strikes the perfect balance between these two very different experiences, and gives the visitor the best of both. If you want a hike, or utterly magical scenery, it's just outside your door. If you want music, or skiing, it's a short drive away. And yet, complete privacy for you and/or your family and friends is part of the package.
The Carlstons' home is, in my opinion, the balance within the balance. How can a place that is so roomy and luxurious still be so intimate and tasteful? Somehow, this home makes it all work. My favorite parts of the house are, of course, the lovely swimming pool and waterfall, the breakfast/kitchen/lounge area (bring your binoculars and you might see all kinds of interesting creatures outside your window!), the upstairs portion of the library, where I like to gaze down on the lake from the comfort of a cushy armchair, and the home theater, where I can relax and watch old movies.
Aside from all the architectural charms of the place, I especially like that you can choose to mingle with your entire family or group of friends, or you can disappear into some other part of the house and have your privacy. Whoever designed this magnificent home had a real skill for making people comfortable. I plan to come back in 2016.
My review in one sentence? "You may find cheaper, you may find more expensive, but you won't find any better".

It's very hard to properly describe this place - not enough adjectives... The setup of the main house is absolutely amazing; with both the internal layout of the house and views from the rooms and the outdoor patios. Everything inside is of a superb quality and beautifully designed and built. Our family of four actually stayed in the guest cabin. The cabin is a beautiful house by itself with all the amenities, surrounded by aspens; it’s the main lodge’s grand features that steal the show... Our young teenage boys absolutely loved this place – it’s a nature’s paradise and you can spend weeks exploring around: endless trails, amazing trout fishing on the lake, night viewing of the elk herds, porcupine, etc., etc., etc. At the evening we would go to the main lodge, and while adults enjoyed their time with other guests the boys would disappear in the basement and pay ping-pong or the board games and watch the TV in the movie theater. Robin and her crew were amazing!

Paradise Vacation Home
Our family fell in love with Wildcat Ranch and this fabulous home with its breathtaking sweeping views of the mountains and lake from the moment we arrived.
From the exquisite fully-equipped gourmet kitchen to the sumptuous living area and elegant comfortable bedrooms, the owners paid special attention to even the smallest details in creating a home that indulges the senses and captivates the mind of even the most discerning guests.
After an exhilarating day of boating on the lake or exploring the hiking trails, we looked forward to relaxing in the beautiful heated pool and spa and refreshments on the wonderful inviting porch, both while enjoying an amazing panoramic view of the lake and watching the sun go down. Whether its relaxing in the elegant grand living spaces of the home, enjoying a good book or nap in the quiet of a well-stocked library, a game of pool, or a movie in the impressive home theater, this home boasts every amenity one’s heart could desire and makes it much more than five star.
The home was exceptionally well maintained, equipped and managed in every possible way. We loved it and hope to return again soon!

A Home For All Seasons
This is an absolutely spectacular home in an even more spectacular setting. The 500+ acres that surround this home make for wonderful hiking in the summer and snowshoeing in the winter while the views are both invigorating and relaxing. However, all this is a mere prelude to the house. The comfort of the living room encourages great conversations, the chef's kitchen - great meals and the pool/hot tub is over the top. Every comfort and amenity you can possibly dream of is already in place in this wonderful estate.
And with Aspen and Snowmass so close, there's always more to see and do.
We loved our time at this place.

I have stayed at Wildcat Ranch both in February for Winter Break and during the summer. Both my visits were incredible. The house is situated in a breathtakingly beautiful wilderness, and I loved being able to finish my coffee and just stroll outdoors to hike, snowshoe, cross-country ski, sled----it's a wonderful place to explore, listen to birds, chat with a friend while hiking or fishing. After a day outdoors skiing or hiking, this is a deluxe palace to return to. Robin Morris has all the local knowledge at her fingertips, & is 200% helpful in arranging any activity you fancy (dogsled trip, horseback riding, massage, reservations for dinner in town, etc.). A snowstorm once forced us to scramble and change our travel plans---we were so glad that Robin made arrangements and helped us get home on time. The house is HUGE and gorgeous, with lots of space to be together as a group and also areas to get away for some private time. The rooms, bathrooms, etc are much more luxurious than any 5 star resort. This is a WONDERFUL place to stay.

Like staying in your own National Park
What an incredible treat. Our family loved the setting because it is secluded and surrounded by nature and yet only five minutes from Snowmass which offers the best and most varied ski terrain in Aspen. We even saw a small herd of elk on our first day.
We split our day time activities between down hill skiing, cross country skiing and snow shoeing but somehow always ended the day in the outdoor hot tub. The house itself offers unbeatable mountain views but is filled with cozy nooks for reading or napping. The manager, Robbin, was great and saw to our every need. She really knows the area and gave us some great ideas for both activities and entertainment.
Finally, we loved the house itself and hope we get to stay here again.

Wildcat Ranch is Stunning
Our stay at the Wildcat Ranch was enthralling on so many levels. The approach and sense of arrival far exceeded our expectations. The house itself was large and spacious, yet delivered the coziness we were expecting from a mountain home retreat. It was clean and well heated. The windows were expansive and offered a variety of views, each one as stunning as the other. If I had the time and creativity (and a winning lottery ticket!) this is the type of sanctuary I’d want to build – but, even better, I rented it! It is multi-faceted with larger rooms for group conversations and meals, rooms for playing games, a library for self-reflection, areas for casual dining, an outdoor hot tub (large with views!) and plenty of bedrooms and other spaces for relaxing. The house sits on a rise offering sprawling views across the valley floor. I went for a morning run and spotted a herd of elk (or some other species!) running across the plain toward the mountains – spectacular!! Wildcat Ranch is the kind of place that “stays” with you even after you’ve left. I’ll be going back!

It just doesn't get any better
I have stayed in a number of high end homes courtesy of HomeAway/VRBO. This one is the most spectacular of all. An amazing and very private setting just a 5 minute drive from snowmass. Incredible views, both winter and summer. Best for a larger group (more than 4) the biggest challenge was choosing what outdoor activity to do first, again, winter or summer. The house itself is perfect for groups when people will want both privacy and several fun central areas in which to gather. In addition to a full variety of bedrooms (master, couples, individual, bunks) the main areas a comfortable and top of the line. I can't imagine a better location for a reunion, gathering with friends or a family get-together. This location is truly magical.

Spectacular wilderness sanctuary
It's simply astonishing that Wildcat Ranch exists to begin with. To feel such utter peace and silence amidst thousands of acres of unspoiled wild beauty, just a short drive from Aspen's shops, restaurants and ski slopes, is a miracle in itself. It's a testament to the care that Wildcat Ranch's owners and stewards have taken at every stage of preserving and developing this property over the past 25 years.
Arriving in this very special house, I felt immediately enveloped in a rare combination of solitude, wilderness, and perfect comfort. The house is luxurious but (unusually for a property of this caliber) not the least bit ostentatious.
The style and furnishings are in perfect harmony with the natural surroundings. Everything has been thoughtfully designed down to the smallest detail to be enjoyed, not to impress -- although impress it most certainly does. Its rooms all feel somehow just the right size, with great variety, and flow beautifully into the shared spaces. Some of the bedrooms are quite small, and all the more cozy and pleasant for that. It's the opposite of the cookie-cutter oversized rooms and too-high ceilings that make many grand houses feel somehow inhospitable.
I've never been in a house that offered a more welcoming and relaxing setting for a large family or group of friends to strengthen ties and share quality time together, with endless (and pleasant) opportunities for both privacy and togetherness, indoor and outdoor activities, according to everyone's temperament.
I visited in summer (and had the magical pleasure of watching the Fourth of July fireworks with my children, from a boat in the middle of a vast, dark lake) and would return in a heartbeat, at any season.
Years ago, when I closed my eyes and imagined myself in a happy place, I would sometimes picture a beach. Now, I imagine myself back at this house, with the stars overhead and the elk in the hills.

Exceptional
There's nothing like ending a beautiful day sitting by a crackling fire surrounded by breathtaking mountain views on all asides, except perhaps by lounging in an outdoor hot tub with a beverage in hand. This unique wood-crafted home is nestled in a valley, steps away from a trout-stocked private lake and wooded trails for both avid hikers and casual strollers. With no other properties in sight, it's hard to imagine that Snowmass Village and Aspen are a short drive away. The bedrooms are both roomy and cozy, with first-rate furnishing and luxurious baths. The expansive chef's kitchen is built entirely of reclaimed heartwood pine and opens up to a fully equipped barbequing patio. This is a great place to relax and get away from it all, with all that the area offers--from great restaurants to river rafting--just minutes away,

Best Mountain Vacation Ever!
We were some of the first guests at MacKenzie Estate. I don't believe there exists sufficient superlatives to describe the experience of staying in this magnificent house on this unbelievable property. Our group of eight was divided between skiers and snowshoe users. With decades of international travel, everybody agreed this was the greatest mountain destination we have ever experienced. The descriptions and photos online do not do begin to do justice. The house was spectacular with remarkable, unique rooms constructed and decorated with impeccable taste. Great aprés ski, relaxing around the grand fireplace in the evenings. The view outside the windows was breathtaking. It felt peaceful and isolated. Yet we were only minutes away from the ski slopes. The manager, Robbin, fulfilled our every need.
On previous winter trips to Aspen, we have always rented ski-in, ski-out. But this was so much better because, not only could we be delivered or picked up from any part of Snowmass in five minutes, but having Robbin gave us equal access to all four of the incredible Aspen mountains. As a result we ended up with spectacular days on Ajax and Aspen Highlands.
Given the magnificent accommodations, and multiple rooms, MacKenzie Estate is an excellent value. Highly, highly recommended. It is amazing a house of this quality is even available. Can’t wait to come back in the summer. Anybody who stays here will have the vacation of a lifetime.

Magical!
Its rare that we visit a new place and don't find the need to want to explore the larger area. Can you imagine going to Aspen, Colorado for the first time, as we did, and finding yourself in this situation? The view from every window of the house is exquisite. Views of raw mountains filled with wildlife, cozy groves of Aspen, and no traces of civilization. It was always hard to believe that one could be here and then, in less than 10 minutes, on the slopes at Snowmass and ready to ski. Other than skiing, we had intended to go into town to explore shops, restaurants and the new museum. It never happened--we didn't want to miss a minute enjoying where we were!
Inside the home, it is hard to choose where to go because every room is not only beautifully proportioned and detailed, but done so in a way that makes it intimate and comfortable. The fine details of the construction are carried through into the smallest details making the house like a woodworking museum. Oh dear, do we relax in the library with views of the lake or in the living room with its vast ceiling of half timbers by the fire or just in the cupola in our bedroom with sunshine seducing us into a nap? Such hard choices might drive you outside for a hot tub to watch the sunset over the lake or into the mountains for a snowshoe adventure beforehand.
Doug and Kathy's people who maintain the home are people they have known for years. They are warm, have kept it immaculate, and are excellent with suggestions about how to enjoy the home and the area. We were able to barbeque local elk, hosted a dinner for 12 on one evening, and were able, among other things, to bake a tempermental dessert in the well stocked kitchen.
For anyone who loves the spirit of the great lodges of our national parks or other beautiful mountain retreats and spas of the world, look no further.
