Description and History:
174 A Saint Philip Street, Unit 3 - The John Bulow House
The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by John Jochim Bulow in 1834 from the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. Bulow, a prosperous merchant and planter, owned extensive real estate holdings on the peninsula and a plantation south of Charleston along Rantowles creek.
Constructed in 1922, this Victorian building, now known as 174 A, showcases exquisite ornate trim, expansive porches, bay windows, gabled standing seam roof, and exterior vibrant exterior color. The high ceilings and large windows allow ample natural light to flood the spacious interiors.
This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a renovated dependency or a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, original moldings, plasterwork, windows and doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction. This is the real deal!

We had a great visit to Charleston and loved this rental. Everything was well stocked and it was very clean. There is a lot of shopping/places to eat just one block away on King Street.

Great location, plenty of room enough for 5 ladies!

Perfect location and VRBO for girls trips. Plenty of room for five of us. Kitchen was a great set up for everything we needed. Loved sitting on porch in morning and drinking my coffee. Easy walk to King street. Did some Ubers because of heat. Wish we would have realized sooner there was free bus transportation and a stop very near our place. Amazing restaurants and shopping. Great trip. Will return. Jamie was a great communicator and very helpful.

Location was perfect. So spacious and comfortable.

We enjoyed our stay in this sunny 3 bedroom property. King and queen beds were a plus. Kitchen is galley style, but big enough if you’re mostly eating out as we were. Second bathroom makes creative use of a narrow space but using shower there comes with downsides (e.g. floor wet for a few hours despite good ventilation). Patio is lovely and courtyard seating area is also a plus. Parking is plentiful and easy. Location is excellent for accessing King Street shops and restaurants, and the Market, waterfront, etc are about 20 min walk or short car ride away. We would definitely stay here again.

Perfect location
Booked this apartment for a bachelorette (7 gals) and this place was perfect. The location is extremely ideal - walking distance to tons of bars, shops, and restaurants - and the apartment itself is adorable. It was exceptionally clean, the perfect amount of space, and the property manager was extremely responsive, helpful and just the sweetest. Highly recommend!

Fun time
Great property. Good location to King Street and places to eat. Unit very comfortable and cute.
Water pressure low and kitchen could use a little more if you are doing any serious cooking. Refrigerator doors not being able to open needs to be addressed.
But overall a great place to rent.

College friends get together
We were a group of 3 long time friends that get together once a year and try to visit some where new each time. Had a great time in Charleston. The city is rather rambunctious from all the young college students who like to party late!

Great Historic Unit with Lovely Balcony
This was a beautifully restored second-floor unit with three bedrooms and two baths. It was extremely clean and comfortable. Beautifully decorated - a real haven for us. Five ladies comfortably stayed in this unit for a mother-daughter long weekend. The beds were very comfortable and the linens simply lovely. You are able to walk to many stores, however if you want to get to the heart of the shopping district, you may need to drive. We drove to the central part of the tourist section and parked in the garage since two of the ladies have difficulty walking more than half a mile. If you can handle a walk of a mile or two, you are definitely within walking distance of the attractions. Sitting on the second-floor balcony was so enjoyable. We spent our early mornings and late evenings on the balcony each day. I strongly recommend the professionalism of this owner.

Perfect Stay
Our experience with this property was fantastic from start to finish. When the original unit we booked needed last minute work, Jamie upgraded us to our choice of available units, which ended up being a great fit when our group expanded. The location was perfect and we were able to walk absolutely everywhere and enjoy everything downtown Charleston has to offer. Jamie was incredibly accommodating with early check-ins, late check-outs, and even a last minute request for puzzles! We all can’t wait to return to Charleston and will certainly be booking one of these units again!

Beautiful space and great location!
Communication was always easy and clear. Appreciate that she was able to accommodate our parking requests. Check in was very easy and instructions were clear. House is very stylish, functional, and clean. The beds were extremely comfortable and felt luxurious. Although I could hear people outside late at night it wasn’t excessive and didn’t bother our group. We enjoyed our stay very much and would definitely stay here again!

AMAZING PLACE TO STAY
We can't put into words how wonderful our stay was at this property. We came in from out of town for our wedding and booked two of these houses for our bridal party and close friends traveling from out of town. Jamie and the owners were incredible through the whole booking process as the properties were getting renovated. The inside is absolutely stunning. The bedrooms feel like you're staying in a 5-star suite! The location is very convenient to downtown and to king street. It's about a 30 minute walk to the water/rainbow row and 15 to market. King street is right there. I would HIGHLY recommend booking this property for your next stay in Charleston :) We can't say enough positive things. And all you brides - you cannot pick a more adorable setting for photos if you are looking for a place for first look and getting ready!

We rented this house while in town for our daughter’s wedding. It is bright, clean, well-appointed and the most comfortable beds. The property manager Jamie was so nice and accommodating. Highly recommend. Street noise on a Saturday night was significant so bring earplugs.

Great location, perfect apartment
The apartment was clean and properly stocked with essentials you wouldn’t want to pack or fly with. It was 100+ degrees outside but the air worked great and the beds were all very comfortable. Would recommend this property to anyone looking to stay in Charleston!
