Description and History:

174 A Saint Philip Street, Unit 3 - The John Bulow House

The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by John Jochim Bulow in 1834 from the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. Bulow, a prosperous merchant and planter, owned extensive real estate holdings on the peninsula and a plantation south of Charleston along Rantowles creek.

Constructed in 1922, this Victorian building, now known as 174 A, showcases exquisite ornate  trim, expansive porches, bay windows, gabled standing seam roof, and exterior vibrant exterior color. The high ceilings and large windows allow ample natural light to flood the spacious interiors.

This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a renovated dependency or a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, original moldings, plasterwork, windows and doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction. This is the real deal!

Saint Philip Square:
Saint Philip Square is an award-winning collection of historic buildings with 17 charming rentals. Each unit offers unique features honoring the particular character of that unit. There are no cookie-cutter units, yet we’ve retained the highest standards of Saint Philip Square in design, materials, furnishings and onsite management. The grounds feature 5 individual outdoor gardens with fountains, dining areas, fire pits and covered barbecues. In the evening, this oasis sparkles with outdoor lighting, making it the perfect place for nightcaps after a day of exploring.

This protected sanctuary is remarkably accessible to the vibrant King Street scene. Be sure to study the area map to appreciate our prized location. You’re as close as it gets to King Street.

Neighborhood:
Saint Philip Square is situated adjacent to Charleston’s renowned King Street along the southern boundary of Cannonborough. Our property provides unrivaled access to King Street’s premier shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Within a two-block radius, you'll find over thirty restaurants plus gourmet sandwich shops, coffee bars, pizza spots, oyster bars, wine bars, bakeries, ice creameries, and vibrant entertainment and music venues.

Like many European cities, Charleston’s historical and cultural offerings are contained in a walkable district. Within a thirty-minute walk you can walk to the historic Charleston Battery, Broad and East Bay Street, Waterfront Park, the Four Corners of Law, historic churches and private homes, the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Charleston Museum, the Aiken-Rhett House, the Charleston Children's Museum, the Charleston Visitors Bureau, the College of Charleston, and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

Don’t feel like walking? Take an Uber or Lyft or try a Pedicab or rickshaw. Charleston Black Cab Limo is excellent for larger groups; in addition, the City provides free shuttle bus services utilizing its attractive DASH trolleys.

Want to explore further? We are two minutes by car to the main cross-town artery, making the Airport, Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, Folly Beach, Mt. Pleasant, and Ashley River Plantations (Drayton Hall, Middelton Place, and Magnolia Gardens) readily accessible.

Whether you’re here for the history, the food, or the vibrant community, our location places you in the heart of it all.

Perfect location and VRBO for girls trips. Plenty of room for five of us. Kitchen was a great set up for everything we needed. Loved sitting on porch in morning and drinking my coffee. Easy walk to King street. Did some Ubers because of heat. Wish we would have realized sooner there was free bus transportation and a stop very near our place. Amazing restaurants and shopping. Great trip. Will return. Jamie was a great communicator and very helpful.

We enjoyed our stay in this sunny 3 bedroom property. King and queen beds were a plus. Kitchen is galley style, but big enough if you’re mostly eating out as we were. Second bathroom makes creative use of a narrow space but using shower there comes with downsides (e.g. floor wet for a few hours despite good ventilation). Patio is lovely and courtyard seating area is also a plus. Parking is plentiful and easy. Location is excellent for accessing King Street shops and restaurants, and the Market, waterfront, etc are about 20 min walk or short car ride away. We would definitely stay here again.

Perfect location
Perfect location
Booked this apartment for a bachelorette (7 gals) and this place was perfect. The location is extremely ideal - walking distance to tons of bars, shops, and restaurants - and the apartment itself is adorable. It was exceptionally clean, the perfect amount of space, and the property manager was extremely responsive, helpful and just the sweetest. Highly recommend!
