We loved our stay here! Great views and relaxing atmosphere. It was a great anniversary trip! We would love to stay again!!

The views from the deck were amazing! We spent a lot of time just enjoying the mountain views. It was private and secluded. It was perfect in every way. We have taken our dogs on many trips in western NC and this is hands down our favorite. The downtown is super cute and lots of hiking nearby. Howard was wonderful to work with.

This house in the mountains is perfect! Very relaxing and peaceful. House was just as described, deck is beautiful and the scenery is awesome. We did not use the hot tub or sauna, so can not comment on that.
Would definitely recommend and would go stay there again.

The Great Escape was such a wonderful property to stay at. Howard communicated everything very well and his directions were fantastic. The property was very clean and comfortable. The views are absolutely breathtaking from the house. We would definitely stay again.

Very clean and well maintained, and the views from the deck and house are better than the pictures so beautiful. It was a very relaxing vacation for us. Any questions we had were answered by Howard. Thank you again for sharing your home.

The property was very clean and secluded. It was an excellent getaway with awesome views. The property was just as described and met our expectations. We look forward to staying there again when we are back in the area.

This place was better than the pictures! Spotlessly clean, plenty of room inside the cabin, fully stocked kitchen, great hot tub and amazing views. Could not have asked for anything better. Host responded promptly to any question i had and was very helpful. Plan to come back! Thank you, Howard!

The beauty of this cabin high in the mountain range of the Appalachians is phenomenal! I would stay forever if I could! My husband and I returned to Great Escape after 12 years and it was still as breathtaking as the first time! Howard is great to work with!! 10/10

Beautiful cabin with privacy and gorgeous views. Extra large kitchen had everything we needed. My husband loved that we could park in the garage. You definitely need AWD or FWD to get up the mountain! I would highly recommend this property.

Lots of great things about this property and we had a really nice 3 day stay. Truthfully I wish I could give it 4.5 stars but that's not an option. 4 stars is too low and the 2 star review is just crazy. It's not supposed to be a 5 star hotel, it's a cabin in the mountains!

The view is as amazing as described/better in person than can be captured in pictures
The hot tub is large and clean with a perfect view
The large deck with seating and that view was also perfect
As others have mentioned, the kitchen is very well equipped
The location is very private which we loved
We had several questions and the owner was prompt and friendly with his responses
Having a garage to park in was really nice! (we've made many trips to the mountains and never had that option at a cabin before)
Bed comfort is so subjective based on people's preferences. I liked it, my husband didn't love it. Definitely not something people should let deter them from staying here, in my opinion.

The road going up to the cabin was in terrible shape in several places so it was a rough ride. I didn't see many people commenting on it in reviews so I'm wondering if recent heavy rains might have caused some of the issues. Still not a reason not to stay in this cabin but be prepared that it will take quite a while to get up and down that 1.7 mile road. And I definitely wouldn't take any vehicles that are remotely close to the ground
The couch isn't very comfortable
Overall, a great place to stay!

This stay was for our honeymoon we just had better expectations for the price we paid for a week.
Pros : beautiful views / hot tub / great kitchen / easy check in / whole house to yourselves with privacy
Cons: poor quality shower head / poor quality towels / new shower liner is needed / no actual couch like in photos but instead an uncomfortable futon and a twin bed like couch/ uncomfortable bed / not enough cleaning products for laundry and dishwasher left / the round chair in the living room smells like cat urine / no Keurig. The pool table is up against a wall in the garage with stuff around it so we couldn’t use it either and the water tasted chemically so we also had bought gallons of water to use as well.
We tried to reach out to the owner via text because we didn’t get good cell service and we received no reply.
We ended up leaving a day early because we could not sleep well in the bed and we even tried sleeping in the living room.
I think if this was a short weekend trip it would have been more okay for us but we were here a whole week for our honeymoon and we expected better quality for the price.
I’m normally not one for leaving reviews but I felt this review might be helpful to someone else planning a vacation.

We loved our stay. The property was exactly as described in the listing and the directions provided by the host were very accurate. The sunrise and sunset views were breathtaking. The property has one of the most well equipped kitchen of any property we have visited. Our two reactive pups enjoyed the peace and quiet. If you’re looking for a secluded getaway with great views and some peace & quiet… then this is the place you want to book. Also, the boat was great at communication and always responded promptly. 10/10 would highly recommend!

My partner and I booked a long weekend here and it was the perfect place to enjoy quality time together. The view is so incredible, even better in the hot tub! And the hosts were so responsive and proactive, so helpful with every question we had. They even helped us navigate the bumpy road when it was covered in snow!

I'll start by saying this was my first time ever staying in the mountains. Not my husbands first rodeo, but most definitely mine and I was nervous. We arrived late in the evening, and despite unfamiliar terrority, mountain road, and freezing rain, we made it up relatively easily. We pulled into a wrong driveway because I didn't follow the instructions Howard provided and simply trusted our GPS. Howard immediately answered our phone call and our mistake was easily and patiently resolved. The road to the cabin is maintained and good. Upon arrival, we were blown away. Beautiful cabin, beautiful layout, and secure but easy entrance.
Binoculars are provided. We did bring our own, but were happy to find another set. The view is astonishing, for a new mountain viewer or a veteran. My husband was quite thrilled to discover even chilled beer mugs were provided! We did bring our two daughters (9 & 14) and both girls were quite content with us to not even worry about venturing out. They didn't want to leave. We brought our two St Bernard/Poodle mix male large dogs. Space can be an issue with their size, but the mountain, deck, and interior space was plenty for them to enjoy the trip right along with us.
Howard is a wonderful host to work with and we were so grateful for this beautiful home he has built. We will definitely be returning to enjoy this escape.
Thank you very much sir!

Typical gravel mountain driveway. Not too rough but would recommend SUV/awd/4wd especially in winter.
Beautiful views, open floor plan. Easy drive to West Jefferson or Boone areas.

This place is truly an escape, we only left the cabin 1 day to explore other wise you can just relax and watch different sides of the scenery.

What a wonderful stay at a peaceful and beautiful location! The cabin was perfect and our host couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating. The perfect great escape to the mountains!

This cabin is beautiful. Upon arrival, we entered the door to the kitchen and dining area and it was a dream. The highlights for us: the views, porch, the hot tub, and the fireplace. We were celebrating our 20th year anniversary and it was our first time staying in a cabin because we've had a camper that we usually pull everywhere. We did it RIGHT our first time. It was so beautiful and relaxing, we only left to buy groceries to cook. We plan to go back with our teenagers next time. :)

We had a great time at the Great Escape. The views are absolutely spectacular. As much as we like to sleep in, getting up to watch the sun come over the mountains was so worth it. Very secluded private place, all the sounds of nature surrounding you. A short 20 minute drive to West Jefferson, that is a fun mountain town. The cabin is well stocked, and has just about anything you need. We really enjoyed our stay, and plan on returning again!

This house is so beautiful. The woodwork makes this feel like a real cabin. The owner has it equipped for his guests to be comfortable. We had a wonderful and relaxing stay especially with the hot tub on the deck with those beautiful views of the mountains.

Amazing stay as always. We got to add seeing a snake and two deer to our wildlife spotting while staying at the cabin. The views were as breathtaking as ever and allowed for game night to be had with a view. The hot tub was once again a hit for the kids and proved a great way to relax after horseback riding in town for the adults. Mr. Shipman’s hospitality was too notch as always! We look forward to another return trip in the future.

We had a fabulous tranquil stay at the Great Escape and can’t wait to return. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time on the deck listening to nature with the panoramic views. This is the spot to unwind and relax with fresh air and scenery of the NC mountains with the comforts of a beautiful cabin. Thank you Howard for sharing this special place with us.

We had a wonderful time at Howard’s property! The views were stunning and we felt like we had a little slice of paradise during our wedding weekend stay. Everything was super clean and Howard left us lots of clear detailed Instructions.

The Great Escape was a real gem in the mountains around West Jefferson. We loved the house and the layout. The back deck is wonderful. The owner Howard was very helpful. We try to get to this area every year. We loved it

The property needs sprucing up. Couches are uncomfortable, needs new mattress in bedroom and new bath towels. Needs a good cleaning on fans and baseboards . Hot tub had scum floating. We cleaned that and filtered the tub well.
We loved the view! The owner was helpful and attentive before we arrived. In your info page you want to say there are 20 stairs to get in.
