Cottontail Creek Ranch started a land conservation fund as of July 1, 2009, whereby guests will be asked to make a charitable donation to the fund in the amount of at least 2% of the rental rate. Cottontail Creek Ranch guests have overwhelmingly exclaimed at their enjoyment of the wide open spaces and working agricultural landscapes during their visits and hope the area will retain this magical quality for their return visits. The creation of this fund gives our guests and others an ongoing opportunity to be part of conserving the natural beauty of the area. A directed giving fund has been established with the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation whereby guests make their donations to a specific earmarked fund called the SLO County Tourism Land Conservation Fund. In turn, the Community Foundation will make grants as directed by Roger and Susan Lyon to non-profit land trusts or public agencies for land conservation projects in San Luis Obispo County. Initially, planned grant recipients from the fund are the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County, the California Rangeland Trust, the American Land Conservancy and the Cayucos Land Conservancy. Each of these land trusts has a proven track record in this County.
Why 2%?
2% was the most obvious number because guests staying in all of SLO county except for this north rural area are charged in addition to the 10.5% Bed tax, a 2% BID (Business Improvement District assessment for marketing). For more information on the how and why please go to "The Making" cottontail creek website
Take the self guided "Roger Chopper Land Conservation Legacy tour". Cayucos to Hearst Ranch

The property offers amazing views, spacious rooms, and a variety of amenities for guests of all ages to enjoy. Susan, the host, goes above and beyond to ensure a comfortable and memorable stay.

Our extended family (11 adults, 8 kids) gathered at Cottontail Creek Ranch for a week-long reunion in August. The location is spectacular, tucked up in a canyon with sweeping views of the hills. The weather was fabulous (especially for heat-weary travelers from all around the country)--sunny during the day, but not hot, and cooling off overnight with the ocean breeze. The home was great for our group, with enough bedrooms and bathrooms that families didn't have to share. And an open living space that allowed all to be part of the festivities but also offered nooks and crannies for those who wanted alone time. Susan was wonderful host, paying attention to every little detail to make our stay enjoyable. Fresh oranges and avocados (in season), rides to the pond for those who couldn't hike, attentive to our needs for the pool temperature or other activities. It was a very memorable reunion and we very much hope to be back again in the future!

The Cottontail Creek Ranch was everything it advertised. From the beautiful surroundings, to the comfort of the home and spaciousness of the rooms the entire family have a great time. Pool, tennis courts, basketball court and even a tether all set -up there was something for everyone. The hostess was wonderful, always available to answer any questions and was extremely helpful in finding things for us to do.

This home was perfect for our party of 16 (6 children and 10 adults). The views of the countryside and ranch were amazing. We enjoyed a little hiking in between the rain showers. Even with a full schedule of events planned in Morro Bay and Cambria, we had the luxury of having a place to come together as a family under one roof. The grandchildren loved the lofts and the space to play in, as well as listening to the frogs croaking in the creek and the rooster crowing. The adults appreciated their own rooms with private baths and the amenities of home. Thank you to the host, Susan, for welcoming us with fresh oranges and avocados along with the beautifully set dining table for our family.

Cottontail Creek was the best stay ever! We are a group of 14 70+ year old women who have been getting together for a week each year for over 20 years. From the first sighting of the property to the final day there, we had an amazing time. Everything was so clean and fresh. Susan even had the table set for our birthday dinner! We spent a glorious week enjoying the vast grounds and the heated pool. It was an incredible time and we plan to come back in April to enjoy the Spring.

After months of trying to arrange a family reunion, we found this listing, and it rose to the occasion! For kids, adults, grandparents, great-grandparents, cousins.. etc. this amazing property kept everyone engaged! Kitchen cooking for a large group, pool time, tennis and pickle ball, easy beach access, wonderful hiking trails to watch the sunset, and the peaceful mornings as the sun rose to greet us was spectacular. Susan was a wonderful host and always open to providing local insight and ways to experience this huge piece of property. We had a ball and hope to return!

There is so much history, rustic charm and wonder to this place. After playing in the playroom, the tennis courts, swimming in the pool and tossing the bocce balls around, our grandkids (ages 1-5) fell into bed with exhaustion each night. We had some truly amazing family time at the Ranch. While it's quite an investment to stay there, we loved every minute. Susan was attentive and clear on all fronts. Great host.

We had a wonderful time at Susan's party house with the whole family. Pool, tennis and hiking were all great. We will certainly be back.

Our family gathering included juniors and seniors (ages 2-78). There was plenty to do on the property to keep busy without ever having to leave: amazing lap pool, spa, hike to pond, fishing at the pond, running trails, tennis and basketball court, bocce ball court, s’mores around the fire pit… The kitchen is ready for large groups with 2 dishwashers, double convection oven, and 2 fridges (one in casita). We had wonderful family dinners around the table that seated all 18 of us (plus a high chair!). The host, Susan, is wonderful. Her attention to detail is amazing: we had fresh cut flowers in the bedrooms, the table was set with fresh flowers, floating candles, water and wine glasses and cloth napkins awaiting our first meal. There is a beautiful history at this ranch. We made some wonderful memories! We will be back!

My family enjoyed our weekend adventure at this beautiful ranch nestled in the hills of Cayucos. There was so many things to see and do that we can’t wait to come back because we couldn’t get to all of them.Sally was the perfect host.

The Cottontail Creek Ranch was everything the property claimed to be and more. Couldn't reccomend the place more... The ranch staff, manager and owner couldn't be any kinder, hospitable or friendly... we even received homemade cookies! The vistas start your day with such beauty and awe as you sit and enjoy your coffee from anyone of the numerous spots on the property you can enjoy. Enjoy your family, friends or work or church retreat getaway!!!

The property is gorgeous and the house is spacious and has everything you need. We had plenty of space and enjoyed sitting together for dinners inside and outside, playing in the pool and spa and hot tub and the kids loved the game room and just walking around and picking fruit. The views are stunning and Susan makes an effort to make sure you're comfortable and having fun, whether you stay at the ranch (like we mostly did) or decide to go out to Morro Bay or Cambria, and so on.

Fantastic trip! 4 days of hunting and wine tasting was not enough to fully explore the ranch. Next time we will add a full day to enjoy this special place and it’s surrounding acreage.
Susan was amazing and helped with any of our needs. Including a Bluetooth speaker.

Cannot say enough about how great this property is......can easily handle large groups....we never left the property once we got there....amazing spaces in the house to relax, talk, play games....and then there is an amazing pool, tennis courts, animals galore, hikes to the fishing pond, game room and on and on. This is a very unique property that you will not find anywhere else.

This is a large, rambling rustic house on an 850-acre ranch in central CA where our family of 16 enjoyed a lifestyle and part of CA not often available to outsiders. The surrounding landscape is beautiful, views galore with plenty of space and activities; everyone found something they enjoyed. The hikes are challenging but doable; the orchards are beautiful, the pool is HUGE, the tennis courts, basketball, volley ball, horseshoes, bocce ball and corn hole kept everyone entertained. The pond is a hefty hike but the kids enjoyed fishing, boating and splashing. Susan was easy to communicate with, providing information, resources and ideas that made this a very special week for our family. The kids were sad to leave. I highly recommend this property for anyone looking for open space, privacy and time to relax and enjoy. We hardly left it to doing anything in the area because this was so special. Hope we can go back!

This luxury, sparkling clean, LARGE resort home was PERFECT for our immediate family (of 15) reunion to celebrate Grammie & Pa's 50th Anniversary. None felt crowded or cramped at any time. The owner attentively answered each of our pre-arrival concerns and questions. Our ages ranged from 9 yrs to 74. EACH of us enjoyed the property to the fullest:
swimming, tennis, fishing, hiking, our own Bocce Tournament over the 5 days, gourmet cooking & peace-filled, comfortable sleeps. The pool with jacuzzi is sparkling and so well designed for all ages and abilities.
You do have to arrive with your planned meals & main ingredients because it is a rough-road (but short) distance from town, eateries & groceries. The kitchen is well stocked with small and large appliances, mixing, cooking, baking (all seasonings & basics) & serve ware for a very large group!
Wi-Fi & cable was excellent, be prepared for NO cell reception. The hills made bicycling too dangerous for the children, will leave bikes home next time because there was PLENTY to enjoy without bikes!
Our beyond awesome memories of this resort will be treasured FOREVER !!!

A group of us, 16 friends, spent 3 nights at The Ranch and had a great time. The host, Susan, is fantastic. Over the years we have stayed at many homes, hotels and B&B's and this one surpassed all of them when it came to hospitality. We walked in the house and were greeted with the dining table completely set including fresh flowers and floating candles! The BBQ was set up with wood and kindling, all we had to do was light it. The firepit was "guest ready" too. So much prep was done before we walked in the door. We never left the property for 3 days. There was no reason to! We kept ourselves very busy hiking, fishing the pond, swimming in the great pool, relaxing in the jacuzzi, playing pickle ball and bocce ball. We didn't get a chance to play tennis, basketball or horseshoes but those are available as well. We were lucky to have dined on fresh meat from the ranch as well as eggs from Jose's chickens. Such a treat. We brought in all our food and beverages and glad we did. It is a little ways from a store. However, our host, Susan, called us on Saturday and asked if we needed anything because she was headed to town. That was so thoughtful!! All in all a wonderful visit. Thank you Susan and Jose for a memorable trip!

What a wonderful location for our family reunion. Our hostess was fabulous, the property spectacular. Although close to wine country or ocean activities, everyone chose to stay on the ranch and enjoy the many amenities. I can highly recommend a stay at Cottontail Creek Ranch.
