About this house rental
The Hornets Nest Lodge, is a brand new lodge built in 2018 fondly Named in honor of our grandfather Harvey J Potvin, who was a UP woodsman for over 80 years. This beautiful lodge is nestled in the quiet serene woods near the Hiawatha National Forest. If you are looking to get away as a family, a ATV/Snowmobile enthusiast, a group gathered together to get their hunt on, or friends looking to spend some quality time in the peaceful Upper Peninsula, then this lodge is exactly what your looking for.
We are 2 brothers who have been passionate about this land, trying to recreate our childhood camp experiences. We have many memories growing up visiting grandpa, and recently decided it was time to rebuild the old homestead of our past and make it more comfortable, accessible, and to allow others to come into our home to make their own memories.
The Hornets Nest Lodge is centrally located in the Upper Peninsula. Its location puts you only a 10 minute drive to Lake Michigan, or a 45 minute drive to Lake Superior. It is adjacent to tens of thousands of acres of Hiawatha National Forest Land, a hand full of miles from the ATV/snowmobile trail head, and across the highway from one of the best Nordic ski, skate, snowshoe trails in Upper Michigan.
The Lodge is approximately 3000 square feet of living space, decorated with a modern rustic theme. All furniture, cookware, beds/bedding linens are all brand new. Also the lodge features over 2000 sq feet of patio and deck, to sit out side and enjoy the peaceful afternoons watching the wildlife of the area, or sitting out and taking in the "Big Sky" at night.
Features inside the lodge are 2 living areas with a big screen TV's, equipped with satellite TV, cell booster, and WiFi. Poker table, 2 full size refrigerators, fully stocked kitchen, washer/dryer, gas fire place, and 2 full bathrooms. Outside the lodge there is ample parking for vehicles with trailers with a circle drive, plenty of outdoor furniture and propane gas grill. If your group exceeds the comfort of our 14 person capacity, please inquire about additional camper hook up for a small fee. (Click the fee button for additional guests and notify us how many additional guests will be staying with camper)
If you would like to bring a furry friend for your northern adventure, please read over our pet policy and in your inquiry include that you agree to the terms of our pet policy. Be sure to check the pet button when making your reservation.

This place was perfect for my family. Clean, lots of space to enjoy and close enough to Escanaba. We will be back!

Everything was very nice again this year

I'm not sure how long something should be considered "new". This property is now 5 years old.
Very spacious and comfortable. Firepit area was great. Concerns: Kitchen is poorly stocked with cooking and serving tools (fry pans, large bowls, etc. were lacking). Internet was VERY SLOW - hard to use. And cell service was poor due to location. Quite a bit of road noise due to location near highway. Wasn't a problem for us, but only 2 bathrooms for 14 people would be a problem. Safety concern is the bowing of the decks. You wouldn't want 14 people on those decks!

The Hornets Nest was perfect for our big group to stay. We had 14 people and it was very accommodating. Having the washer and dryer was great to wash towels and was a nice feature. The kitchen is fully stocked and all the bedding was complete and clean! The fire pig and all the chairs was awesome as well! Would definitely recommend!!!

The Hornets Nest Lodge was incredible; I took my dad, brother, and three boys for a golf trip. The lodge was perfect, very clean, and had plenty of space! Everyone loved the place and planning to come back next year! Mike was an excellent host; definitely a 5-star lodge!!

The guys definitely put a lot of love and care into this place! It had everything we needed and some things we didn't even think we needed (s'mores stuff, bug spray, football, laundry detergent, and more!). The "extras" in the woods was a fun surprise and the kids absolutely loved it! It was the perfect middle ground for all the amazing sights! We will definitely be back!

My family and I enjoyed our stay at this wonderful place. We enjoyed fires in the great fire pit area telling family stories and creating new ones. We loved going on walks on the trails to find the creatures hidden in the woods and playing cards at the game table. We found two creeks very close to the house that were perfect for the kids. We also enjoyed ice cream twice at the Dairy Flo in Rapid River. There are lots of things to do within an hour or so like the Pictured Rocks Boat Tours.

Wonderful cabin, perfect for larger groups or family
The cabin is amazing. Plenty of deck space to entertain, plenty of property to have fun. There is plenty of space to park and a nice circle drive which is helpful for those with trailers if you have one. There is also a trail to ride just across the road! Plenty of access to all of the U.P. trails if that's what you're looking for. I wish my SxS wasn't out of commission for the trip. The owner stayed in contact with me consistently through our stay. No major problems during our stay, but we did have the power go out for a few minutes, but my guess is it was something with the power company. Still, the owner messaged me back right away when I asked him about it. The only warning I have is mind the mosquitos. The cabin has 4 or 5 bug zapper type devices, but the mosquitos are still bad, but I believe that to be a U.P. staple in general. The location is pretty central to all the U.P. has to offer, which is awesome and convenient. Very nice cabin, definitely recommended. If I stay up in the U.P. again, I will look it up again to see if it's booked out or not.

Spectacular lodge
This was an amazing place. There really is a topnotch cross country skiing and snowshoeing system literally across the road; well laid out lodge, with a really nice shower, hang out area upstairs, kitchen/ dining room/ etc downstairs. In terms of cleanliness, was immaculate when we showed up with a freshly plowed driveway/ parking area. We'll definitely be returning.

The house wasn’t too far from town. It’s not in the best location for snowmobilers, but has a TON of room for large trailers if you don’t mind transporting them. Our group had two full sized trucks and a 36’ enclosed trailer with plenty of parking/maneuvering to spare! The owner was quick to respond and very friendly. The property is in a beautiful and secluded setting. We didn’t use the fire pit but it was shoveled out for us. The drive was also plowed prior to our arrival. The inclined walkway to the porch is really slippery— the concrete is glossy smooth, not combed with texture.
Unfortunately we had some problems during our stay. We encountered gas/water leaks that needed addressed —the owner promptly communicated with us and stopped by to attempt to fix them (they were not fixed). We were a bit frustrated to learn suspicions of a gas leak were known prior to our arrival. The stove was leaking gas. The faucet on the tub leaked water on the floor of the bathroom and the washing machine also leaked a considerable amount of water even after using “small” load settings as directed by the owner. The house was not clean. I did request the owner not spray chemicals (like fragrances, Febreeze, wall plug -ins) prior to our arrival due to allergy issues but we didn’t expect the floors to be so dirty (we wiped up a lot of water due to leaks—paper towels and mops were black with grime), there were piles of dead flies in the window sills in the kitchen and upstairs, also heavy dust and cobwebs throughout. We were under the impression the house was a new build but it may have been partially renovated. Drywall on the ceiling in one bedroom had significant paint peeling and cracks around an entire sheet of drywall. It appeared to be leaking at some point although the ceiling wasn’t an active leak while we were there (but no rain either!). Several kitchen drawers were filthy with rusty/broken kitchen utensils and debris, my friend cleaned them and reorganized them. IMO Pots and pans need to be replaced. If using the kitchen is important to you, bring your own cookware.

We had a amazing stay. Close to the Hiawatha Forest. We able to spend lots time grouse hunting within a short distance of the lodge. Rapid River restaurants are only a few short miles away. We will be back next year.

My family (me, my husband, our two boys ages 3 and 6, mother and father in law, and 13 year old nephew) stayed here for 4 nights and it was a blast!!! The property is just beautiful! All the little characteristics such as the hornest nests, the sculptures, and the hornet you turn on made for a very unique stay! The shower is quite amazing and the kitchen comes fully stocked. We loved every second being at this house and hope to make another trip back in the future. Thank you so much!

All the ladies on our annual girls trip had an amazing time. The house was spacious enough for all of us and PLENTY of room outside for all sorts of yard games.
We enjoyed the volleyball court and the fire pit.
We usually spend all our time eating at the house and this year I forgot my knives so I was VERY thankful that the knives were amazing. I’m the chef of the group and made my weekend much better. 😊 Sometimes it’s the little things. Loves the grills outside, the side burner came in handy!
