About this cottage rental
Sea Smoke is a delightful cottage offering a peaceful and cozy getaway with spectacular, long views up and down the lovely ocean bay surrounding Rays Point. This comfortable 2 bedroom, 1½ bath cottage is located in a quiet neighborhood of other cottages and farms on one of Washington County’s most scenic peninsulas. There are wonderful panoramic views of the ever changing tides with many granite points and islands to explore.
One of Sea Smoke’s biggest advantages is its location – there are only a handful of rental cottages close to the services and amenities of the quaint fishing village of Milbridge, yet far enough away to offer wonderful oceanfront views and countryside privacy. Unlike many of the very remote areas around us, Sea Smoke is conveniently located just 5 miles from Milbridge’s small village center where you will find a good modern grocery story, two restaurants, pharmacy, gas station, public library, medical center, and a couple of cute gift shops to explore. Although there are other lovely cottages to rent across Downeast Maine, you’ll find the convenience of our location combined with Sea Smoke’s scenic, rural atmosphere to be a big plus.
Offering numerous amenities, this clean and comfortable cottage is just 20 feet from the water's edge. Sea Smoke's close proximity to the shore ensures terrific up close water views. Visitors have direct access to the shore via a short set of stairs located in front of the cottage. A waterside patio is the perfect spot for relaxing with a book while basking in the sun’s warmth and enjoying the refreshing cool afternoon breezes that come off the ocean and bay.
Sea Smoke cottage takes its name from the occasional and brief summer fogs that roll in gently and peacefully from the open ocean and down the bays along the rocky coast of Downeast Maine. From the cottage you can enjoy watching the clammers as well as the lobster and pleasure boats that come in and out of the channel leading to the open ocean. You'll delight in watching the late afternoon sun create a spectacular show as its rays light up the pink and orange granite shores of nearby Blaskett Point and Peace Point. At night you can watch the moon rise across the bay, enjoy thousands of stars, and even the occasional display of the northern lights.
Sea Smoke is the perfect size and location for a small family or for couples wanting to get away from it all. The interior of the cottage is decorated with a seaside Maine cottage flair, centered around its water views and rocky shoreline. The main bedroom offers a queen bed, large closet and an attached private half bath. The guest room features two twin beds. The cottage also has a fully updated center bath, with tub & shower. There is a glass fronted great-room that includes a dining area, living room with electric log fireplace, satellite TV with DVD player, Wi-Fi Internet, and a well equipped kitchen. The cottage includes many extras such as CD player, washer, dryer, games, outdoor gas grill, phone, and all linens/towels. Cell service is good in the area for most carriers including ATT, Verizon, and US Cellular.
The waters off of Sea Smoke are wonderful for kayaking or canoeing with the tides to “seal island” where you will see numerous seals and nesting birds. This is a tidal bay with DownEast tides changing by as much as 14 feet every 6 hours. So, launching from the cottage is limited to hours around high tide; there is a deep water launch site in Milbridge.
There are several pairs of Bald Eagles nesting nearby, and they are often seen flying over the bay in front of the cottage. You will likely see seals, terns, loons, ducks, and other shore birds along with the foxes, porcupines, and deer that call the Rays Point Peninsula their home. In July and August you can pick wild blueberries and raspberries along the road. The area around the cottage is perfect for walking or biking.
With the cottage's central location along Maine’s beautiful Downeast coast, vacationers have many options to choose from when planning the day’s excursions to take advantage of the area’s plentiful sights, activities and cultural events.
In the immediate area of the cottage we recommend hiking and exploring the beautiful ocean side McClellan Park in Milbridge or doing a boat tour of the local islands or the Puffin colonies at the beautiful Petit Manan light house.
You can also visit Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge (Recently renamed Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge). The coastal hiking trails are spectacular and the seabirds colonies are a wonder to watch. Petit Manan also allows public access and picking in the refuge's enormous wild blueberry barrens.
An absolute must is the 15 mile drive to see the stunning mainland section of Acadia National Park at Schoodic Peninsula with it spectacular granite cliffs and large crashing surf. The park offers wonderful walking trails and you can drive to the top of the 'mountain' for breathtaking views of the ocean, islands, forests, and other mountains in the area. Along the way visit the small but charming walking villages of Corea and Winter Harbor where you will find a passenger ferry service to Bar Harbor.
Take a day trip to Bar Harbor (60 minutes), or travel up the coast to explore Campobello Island (Canada) and FDR's beautiful summer home (60 minutes). In the same area, you will find the breathtaking Quoddy Head State Park Lighthouse, the easternmost point in the U.S., with wonderful hikes and walks including an arctic bog nature walk.
Whatever your interest, this terrific area will not disappoint vacationers looking for the real Maine experience.
Sea Smoke cottage is 1½ hours from Bangor and the Bangor International Airport, 3½ hours northeast of Portland, 5½ hours from Boston, 8½ hours from New York City, and 2 hours from St. Stephen, New Brunswick. The house is 1 hour from Bar Harbor and the Mt. Desert island portion of Acadia National Park.
Sea Smoke cottage welcomes well behaved dogs (limit of 2 dogs) and smoking is not permitted.

Very quiet and peaceful location but also close enough to town. Enjoyed Milbridge

Thanks for allowing us to stay with our pups! We enjoyed the privacy of the cottage and surrounding nature. The property had everthing we needed for our stay.

Overall we loved our stay at Sea Smoke cottage. It is well equipped for spending the majority of your time at home enjoying the views, lounging in a hammock (we brought our own), or doing a puzzle inside on a rainy day. We also really enjoyed picking up fresh seafood from Chipman’s and preparing that for dinner each night. Gave 4 stars instead of 5 because the view during lower tides is just of mud and you can’t access the water at all from the property, so it’s kind of frustrating having to plan your day around these timelines.

We enjoyed our stay at Sea Smoke Cottage. The quiet location on the bay was beautiful and the tidal changes each day were amazing. The cottage was spotless and stocked with everything we needed. We spent so much time sightseeing in the area that I wish we had more time to simply relax on the bay. Thank you for a great stay!

The views were spectacular. Do yourself a favor and make sure to get up to see the sunrise - it's amazing! Watching the tidal changes was so interesting and beautiful. The cottage was cute and had everything we needed for a relaxing Maine vacation. It's a quiet location but not a far drive from tourist sites. Mike the property manager was great.

Place was great and reasonable price. The write up on VRBO though seemed embellished as there was no porch, just the 3 sliders out to a concrete slab. We enjoyed our time there, water pressure an issue for showers, hot water could not keep up. I will say, the owner could upgrade the mattress in the Queen bed, my wife and I dreaded getting in that bed every night, comfortable sleep was hard to come by.

The property location was incredible. Witnessing the tidal changes were surreal. Was surprised that weeds appeared overgrown (around home, picnic table, etc.) and that the water was not usable. The incredibly heavy iron taste made it very hard to use even to brush teeth or wash clothes. A horrible taste and smell. Would be nice to have an outdoor space to sit in rainy weather. The property does become damp during rainy days. No A/C and was not specified in listing but luckily, we didn’t need it as the temperatures were reasonable. Location is close to town, and loved the man in town who waves to everyone passing by. Our first visit to Maine was pleasant. With the tidal changes, using the kayaks not possible but found close lakes and ponds to explore. Was surprised that the exit instructions required the property manager to do a walk through. This was unnecessary and the property manager wasn’t available as we checked out 2 days early.

My family and I had a great time at the cottage. The views were spectacular and the location just outside of Milbridge could not have been better. The cottage had everything that we could have needed for our week long stay.
We did bring a case of water just because we are not used to well water. The leaves were just turning turning toward the end of our stay and they were awesome. Lots to do in the area. Would highly recommend Robertsons boat tours and Schoodic Point. Really look forward to coming back in the future.

Beautiful cottage with bay views, and close to Acadia, was the perfect place for our family vacation!

The house was as advertised and in a very quiet area. It had everything we needed for our time there. It was a close drive to Millbridge and many of the things we wanted to see and do. The high point was walking Petit Manan Trails. There were no other people there so it was a nice break from Acadia. I would rent the house again.

Peaceful.....no other cottages seen or heard....
Great view of tidal cove.....
Did question water quality this year......do plan on bottled water..

We had a great week. The cottage had everything we needed to make some meals and its central location was great for seeing a lot of sights. The WiFi is not great so it wouldn’t work for remote work. It has the best little porch to watch the sunrise and watch the tide go in and out.

The cottage was clean and comfortable. It was decorated nicely with wide open views of the bay. And talk about privacy, we saw only a few people digging clams (interesting!) and a few cars traveling down the road. I personally do not enjoy a tide bay however my partner loved watching the drastic tides come in and out. Good base to travel out to many grand destinations.

Our week at Sea Smoke was a lovely, quiet break during a hectic summer. It was an idyllic Downeast Maine sea cottage experience for us and our Labrador, Jack. We’ll be back!

Great location....on a tidal bay...no other cottages in sight...peace and quiet... beautiful morning sun.
Amazing seafood choices at Chipman's Wharf. Great exploring...east and west.....Acadia and Lubec. Enjoyed Robertson's puffin tour.
Ponds and lakes nearby for kayaking.
Hope to return (with a can of Comet and a couple coffee mugs)

Wonderful getaway!!
This is a beautiful cottage, very comfortable and well stocked, with a view that makes you never want to leave. A full wall of windows looks out to the water. It was even better than described! We spent lots of time relaxing on the patio watching the tide come and go. Nice small town with grocery, a great Mexican restaurant and a seafood market where we bought lobster, clams and oysters. It's a convenient location for Acadia Park .We took a boat tour to view puffins on Petit Manan, Campabello was 90 minutes away. This is a fabulous cottage to relax, recharge and get away. Mike is the very nice property manager and is readily available. Looking forward to a return visit!!

Beautiful location right on the water. Used as a home base as we explored up and down the coast.

Ideal setting
For myself this was ideal. The loction along the coast is great for adventuring north or south. The floor plan was ideal. The home is a lovely setting open to the water in a protected bay from the ocean with a great view of the sun and moon rising. Lots of nature: seals, a nearby eagle, squirrel, fox, deer. Large smooth rocks to sit by the water's edge. Peaceful and energizing.

Enjoyed our week stay in this comfortable and cozy home. This location is very private and quiet with fantastic sunrises and sunsets. Love this area of Maine and will definitely make plans to book this cottage again!

Amazing Maine Vacation
We spent a week here in September. The changing view was even more beautiful and relaxing than we even anticipated. We spent a lot of time on our patio watching the water, sunrises, birds and we did get to see seasmoke on the one rainy, foggy day that we had. Schoodic Peninsula is an amazing, beautiful place. We hiked almost every day, took a Robertson Sea Tour, ate at 44 Degrees North one night, cooked lobsters from Chipman's Wharf.
We highly recommend Sea Smoke Cottage. We did not want to leave!!

Sea Smoke Cottage Birthday Getaway
Was pleased with the location of property.....no nearby cottages were visible..... private and quiet. Enjoyed the tidal cove. As the tide went out the shore birds arrived. Enjoyed our trips to Acadia and kayaking outings in nearby lakes. Made two visits to the community vegetable gardens to gather veggies.
Did discover there was no Wi-Fi service as advertised. Renters should also be aware of high humidity along the coast especially on foggy/rainy days. Bedding, towels, and carpeting often felt damp.

Great location
Felt right at home the minute we walked in. Very well furnished. Best of all, the property manager intercepted a Federal Express package containing medication and was able to get it to us prior to our arrival. Thanks so much to Mike and Betty. Good location to visit many beautiful spots and yet very peaceful and away from the crowds.

Memorable Vacation
Sea Smoke is a wonderful way to enjoy the scenic northern coast of Maine. The views were breathtaking and the wildlife was a joy to watch. The stairs down to the water provide access for kayaks & canoes which is an added bonus. The cottage location is also good for visiting nearby cove communities and larger cities such as Bar Harbor.

A true Maine experience
Away from the crowds, a real Downeast experience. Cottage is homey, private and comfortable. Short driving distance to multiple locations (Schoodic Point, Winter Harbor, Machias, etc) make day tripping easy. Second bedroom could use a queen sized bed for the second adult couple. We knew this going in, but thought worth mentioning. Overall a quality experience.

perfect getaway
Aside from some housekeeping issues in the beginning, I loved the quiet and comfort of the cottage. If you're looking to get away from it all, this is the perfect place!

The property managers and also the rental company were both marvelous contacts, readily available and constantly in contact with us as needed throughout our stay. When we stupidly locked ourselves out during a rush to catch a boat in Bar Harbor, they were able to get us in and on the way quick enough to maintain our plans! Every morning we pinched ourselves over the view and remote location that allowed for easy isolation during these Covid Times. Great location to allow for daily trips to Acadia but far enough away to allow for a more budget-friendly trip, especially since we had our own car to use. A few things to be aware of:-Listing says pet friendly, but in the end you will need to cover all furniture your pet will use with your own blankets. And actually there are no pets on the beds, period. This was a surprise to us when we got the last paperwork just before leaving. Luckily our dog is trained and had his own crate, but this is something to keep in mind.-We were informed of some plumbing issues the day before our arrival, but they were already being dealt with and it was not a huge effect on our stay in the end. I am only mentioning it because if anything does go wrong, due to the remote location it could take days to get someone out to fix something more involved, like plumbing. A plumber was finally able to come out on Thursday (we arrived Saturday) and then everything was fine. The property manager was very good about working with our schedule and keeping us informed.-The last thing I want to mention is the property could use a deep cleaning. The floors and furniture and also the fridge all were immaculate, but little things like corners and inside cabinets were dusty/cobwebby. Just remember, you are in nature! Some of the dishes were also dirty- we had to scrub them when we took them out (no dishwasher).-One more note! Bring your own tissues and toilet paper, or be prepared to buy some while you are there. There was only one small box of tissues and one roll per bathroom provided. Also, double check with the manager going in how many bath towels you will need- there were three body towels total for the two of us and only one washcloth. Also, there was a hand towel at each bathroom sink. You just may need to bring some extra if you are heavy towel users.Overall a wonderful stay that I would recommend highly, as long as your expectations are managed.

Nice property on a beautiful bay. We loved watching the tides roll in and out - and caught some "sea smoke" sightings a couple of times. Cozy house and wonderful views. Loved the proximity of Milbridge but the quiet of being 5 miles away.Favorite spot for our week were our hikes at Pwtit Manan. Incredible! Enjoyed our own lobster dinner from Chipman's Wharf. A trip to Acadia was also terrific. Really enjoyed our stay here - we will be talking about it for a long time.

A little bit of heaven for a week
We thoroughly enjoyed our week at the Milbridge home. It was very secluded, but close enough to everything we needed. The house was immaculately clean , and extremely comfortable. We watched the tides come and go from the patio a number of times and enjoyed them every time. We rode our motorcycle to Arcadia Park and loved it there too. Would recommend this home to all friends and family in an instant.

Great Summer Getaway!
We loved staying at sea smoke cottage! The home was just the right size for our family of four. The view was gorgeous in all different weather conditions and times of day. We even witnessed the most vibrant rainbow we have ever seen in our lives right over the inlet. The location was close enough for us to enjoy Acadia, Bar Harbor, other local hiking trails and yet secluded enough to really relax. We would definitely stay again!

Awesome!
We loved Milbridge and the Cottage we stayed in. Everything was perfect, changing views, our walks and kayaking. We didn't want to leave. There is plenty to do and see around the area, from hiking biking or just enjoying views. We found a great Schoodic Sculpture trail that took us to the the near by towns which was also fun.
Highly recommend this cottage both the manager Julie and caretaker Mike were very responsive and mades us feel welcomed!
