What is the water skiing like in Great Creek? The creek is protected from the main lake by a no wake zone and box culvert. That keeps many of the main lake yahoos out of our "private" creek. With 1.5 mile run, it makes a perfect spot for slalom skiing and wakeboarding. It's not uncommon to see some barefooting and great slalom skiing in the mornings. The jet skis and tubes generally don't come out until 11:00 AM.
How is the fishing in Great Creek? The fishing is pretty good right from the dock at the home. Bream (Blue Gill) and catfish are easy to catch from the dock. We also have large mouth bass all around the docks in the creek. There are many bass tournaments that run out of the nearby Holly Grove Marina and many of the fishermen tell me our cove is as good as any at holding large mouth "keepers". The main lake offers a variety of good fishing spots including large grass fields as you head up into the river where striped bass are found.
How is the boat traffic in Great Creek? During the week it is generally good throughout the day. The weekends in the summer can get busy in the creek between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM. When it gets too much boat traffic to ski or wakeboard, you can get into calm water in the river in about 20 minutes. Going out of Great Creek and heading north, you enter the river portion of Lake Gaston. The river offers miles of calm water, straight runs and deep water (26 feet). Since the water comes from the bottom of Kerr Lake, the water is cool which is refreshing in the heat of the summer. Deep, cool water as calm as butter is awesome for skiing and boarding.
Lake Gaston is one of the truly superior lakes in the country, located in the piedmont area of northern NC and southern VA. It covers 20,300 acres, 34 miles long, and has over 350 miles of shoreline. The lake has very little water level fluctuation year round and has the highest water-quality rating in eastern USA (NC Stream Sanitation Commission, A2 rating). Lake Gaston is well stocked with game fish including striped and largemouth bass, walleye, bream, crappie, sunfish, perch and several varieties of catfish. Lake Gaston has an average depth of 40+ feet (~80+ ft. deep near eastern end at dam).

Wonderful property for a group ranging from 14 to 84. We had everything we needed! Really enjoyed the location for watersports, super-convenient, and loved that we could sit on the point and watch the action from land too!! Lake Gaston has become a family favorite.

The cove was great for swimming & the upper story dock for jumping in, SUPs, kayaks & paddle boat were enjoyed by all. Such an expansive property with amazing views! The house and yard are wonderful; the photos don’t do this place justice! Our family of 10 (8 adults and 2 children) had ample room, the bedroom and bathroom layout made it easy for each family group to have their own space. And the kitchen, den and porch were wonderful gathering spaces. We loved being on the peninsula with a great shoreline & view of the lake. And as a bonus, there was much to explore in the yard; the grounds are landscaped with gorgeous flowers, bushes and trees and there is also a vegetable garden. We would definitely come back!

This gem of a property is surrounded by water on three sides with breathtaking views! The grounds are landscaped with gorgeous flowers and flowering bushes. The house is equally stunning and well equipped beyond the description on the VRBO sight. The owners are super friendly and quick to respond. I inquired if the kitchen had a pizza stone - it did not, but they purchased one and it was there for us!! Best vacation ever! We will definitely return to the Great Escape!!

Our family of four generations enjoyed a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend at The Great Escape. It is a lovely property, well maintained and with plenty of fun activities for any age. The views are amazing from most any room in the home. I love that the owners pay great attention to detail and ensure that guests have access to everything needed during the stay and has provided meticulous notes to assist with a stress free visit!
My niece, a local TV anchor, enjoyed the visit enough to mention how wonderful our visit to Lake Gaston was during her news broadcast!
Truly a splendid family trip!

We are so lucky to have been able to stay at this beautiful place for a third time. The space is gorgeous - lots of areas to spread out and enjoy nature. We loved paddle boarding and kayaking - the sunsets cannot be beat. The kitchen has literally everything you could ever imagine needing and is very easy to work in. The standalone ice maker is the absolute best thing! Having the choice of water sports, corn hole, basketball, ping pong, etc made sure no one was ever bored! Having the lovely Rosemount Vineyard so close by is such a bonus. Communication with the very responsive hosts is always a pleasure. Stay here only if you want to have a perfect, wonderful time!

Our party of 6 adults absolutely loved this place. We found everything that we needed plus much, much more. You won't run out of things to do here and you can't help but admire the wonderful decorating in the house and incredible landscaping on the property. The view and location are great and we thoroughly enjoyed the firepit by the water in the evening, and fishing from the dock during the day. We were very happy that we chose this place for our get together.

We planned a family gathering at this property for Christmas. We had 7 older children and 9 adults. Despite the weather being colder, we still had a wonderful time! We were able to take the paddle boat out, fish, and go on walks to explore the neighborhood with our dogs. It was an amazing experience!

It's a beautiful home inside and out.
Kitchen was fully stocked.
The best was excellence in customer service!

Some friends and family wanted a quick get away and I'm so glad we selected this house! I can't say enough great things about it - inside and out it is perfect. The landscaping is beautiful, all the outdoor spaces are well planned and accessible - and we used them all! It was nice to have a choice of a gas firepit or a wood fire! We used both. The boat house is great with the second level deck. That fact that the home is situated on a peninsula makes it very private and secluded. The house inside is very well stocked and has everything you need for a couple of nights or a whole week. The beds are comfortable, it was clean, the screen porch is wonderful and the home is very spacious. We didn't have any kids but it would be GREAT for family with a bunch of kids. Teresa was very responsive and is a great host. We will be back!

A great vacation home with nice amenities! My family an I enjoyed our stay here. The owners were very responsive when we needed to reach out. It was a nice plus for there to be two refrigerators plus an extra ice maker. The large pantry made it easy for us to store all of our food. There is a wood burning fire pit plus a gas one; we utilized both. The large deck made for a great space to play corn hole. We would come back for another stay.

My daughter said after we left “this was the best vacation ever”. I think this summarizes how everyone felt about our stay. Everything with the house was perfect. And our host was very helpful and responsive. We would definitely go back again.

Teresa and Pete went above and beyond communicating before we arrived. The house was beautiful, unbelievably clean, stocked with everything that you could need, and an open layout that everyone loved.
We really appreciated having access to the kayaks, paddle boards, etc. The yard is beautifully landscaped, and the bird feeders were an added attraction. My favorite part was sitting on the screened in porch.
I highly recommend this house and really appreciate Teresa and Pete sharing their house with my family.

We had a beautiful week. The house was perfect. It was fully loaded with all the appliances gadgets and even spices. It had an abundance of water toys at your hand for relaxing or paddling around. We had one small issue with the sink faucet being lose and Pete and Teresa immediately handled the problem. They even checked on us to make sure everything else was good. I highly recommend this property and am looking forward to spending more time there.

This was our second stay at The Great Escape. We loved this property so much that we came back. The location is perfect as it is on it's own little peninsula on a side creek of the main lake, making it ideal for floating in the lake all day long. We used the SUPs, kayaks, and pedal boat daily! The house has everything you will need including TWO refrigerators and a stand alone ice machine. So many beds to accommodate are large extended family (9 grand children!!). My favorite room was the screened in porch for morning coffee (especially nice when it had rained overnight). The hosts were wonderful and easy to communicate with. Thanks for a great family vacation!!

Our family has been vacationing at The Great Escape numerous times over the last 7 years. We love the house, and the location of the property on Lake Gaston. The house easily accommodates our 4 families and the kitchen has everything we need to make breakfast, lunch & dinner! We were delighted to see an additional full size refrigerator added for our use! Days are spent floating in the lake by the boat dock. Mornings and evenings are enjoyed relaxing or fishing on the point. Sunsets are gorgeous! We just love this vacation home. Pete and Teresa are the best hosts. They care very much about their guests and do everything they can to make sure we enjoy our stay. We can't wait to come back next year!

Pete & Teresa are great hosts! Each time we have stayed there have been upgrades to the home & property! They communicate well with us & are very responsive to our questions. They appreciate it when you let them know of a lot problem. This year was our smallest group. The most recent upgrades were mindful of the groups the house can handle! Thanks from all of us!

We continue to stay at The Great Escape because it is the best on the lake. Pete and Theresa are amazing hosts. We had terrible weather and still managed to have a good time. Can't wait to come back for year 5!

This is our fourth year staying at The Great Escape and it was exceptional again this year! This home is perfect for our large family, and the gentle slope of the lot makes it manageable for our parents. The owners continue to make beautiful improvements - new this year is a stamped concrete walkway down to the point and around the side of the house. Everyone in our family had a wonderful time- can't wait to go back next year !!!!

We made some beautiful memories. We didn’t want to leave. The home had everything from spices to great cookware. It is fully equipped. The owners were very helpful and kind. We will be returning.

The owners really seem to have spared no expense nor - missed any detail for providing an exceptional experience. The kitchen equipment, the furnishings, the attention to detail all combined to provide a completely relaxed and enjoyable stay. Four bathrooms enabled us to have each couple and each single have private baths. If the 5th bedroom is used, a bath will need to be shared, and this is accommodated well by having two bathrooms with both en suite and direct access.

Three generations of our family stayed at the Great Escape for a week. If you are looking for a large lake home for a large group in the Lake Gaston area, this should be your top pick. The house is clean, roomy and well appointed. There are plenty of table and cook ware, small kitchen appliances, two full size new refrigerators and an ice maker, large pantry, etc. that make meal prep easy and fun. The house and the gorgeous and large yard have many seating areas and places to wonder to find a quiet place for yourself or conversational spaces with others. The dock was a terrific bonus for many of us for fishing, swimming (and yes, jumping into the lake from the high deck!) and catching some rays. The Internet runs through fiber optic cables-so no need to worry about not having great connections.
The owners are easy to communicate with and seek to make sure your vacation is as smooth as possible. The owners have a detailed notebook with instructions for everything on the property indoor and out that make getting online, locating the lake toys, linens (an additional cost), etc., a snap. They also communicate with you well in advance on how to open up and close up the property. There is no garbage service; dumpster is only two minutes away near the Citgo station. Be aware the upstairs loft is open to the great room below and has no window coverings. They are three twin beds in this room. Our teenagers (16 & 18) found it a fine place to sleep. Bring your own coolers.

Great big house with lots of open areas and beautiful views of the lake. Loved the fire pit and big tables for board games. Used the driveway for spikeball and had a great time. My only complaint was that there was is a seemingly strict seven car limit with restrictions to “not park on the grass or the street” for the driveway for a house that holds 19 people. We were all coming from different directions and some at various times so we were originally going to drive separately but had to carpool and drive out of the way to pick each other up so we could adhere to the limit. When we got there the driveway is huge and there is no grass for people to park on so it was just frustrating to have a limit that seemed unnecessary. Other than that, gorgeous place.

My cousin and I both turn 60 in November, so we booked this home for a 3 night girls' weekend. The number guests ended up being 19, but no one ever felt crowded. I would love to book this home during the summer, so that we can take advantage of the water sports. The only thing that would have made it better was more refrigerator space. We loved the two ice makers, the screened porch and the fire pit. We felt safe the entire weekend and could not have had a better time. The hosts were excellent and we stayed in touch with them over the weekend.
