About this house rental
Rick’s Place
Discover how to REALLY relax!
Would you like to relax in your own peaceful pool that you share with no one, listening to your favorite tunes, while enjoying the vast expanse of the ocean right in front of you - amazing whales, spinner dolphins and colorful fish, the sunsets, and complete serenity, for less than the price of a resort hotel room? Then our home will be perfect for you.
If you are like me, you want to do nothing but relax and disconnect while on vacation. I don’t like resorts, eating every meal out, sitting around a pool with 100 other people.
Rick’s Place is a cozy, romantic home, perfect for two. Unwind, enjoy each other’s company, and disconnect from your crazy busy life. I suggest stopping in town for a few groceries. Spend your days sitting around in the solar-heated pool, reading on the lanai or sitting by the sea wall. Watch the whales jump in the winter months (they will wake you up at night during whale season!), Enjoy cooking dinner on the gas barbeque or in our well-equipped kitchen while enjoying an icy cocktail. Milolii sunsets are the highlight of the day- no two are ever the same. Turn off all the lights and lay out on the chaise lounges and look at the moon and the Milky Way at night. Showering in the outdoor shower with the ocean breeze blowing on you is refreshing and revitalizing. There is good Wi-Fi and Direct TV on smart TVs, as well as a Blu-Ray player.
There is a viewing area on the cliff where the sea while enjoying your morning coffee or your evening libations. The Kona fishing fleet aims for the waters in front of the house, so sometimes you can witness a hook-up while staring out to sea (we provide binoculars). You can look down and see tropical fish and the occasional turtle swim by. Sometimes the surf is high and the waves crash against the cliff dramatically. One guest called the high surf “Hawaiian fireworks” which is a great description.
The drive down from the highway takes you from 1500 ft. elevation to sea level. It’s a winding ride, but there are spectacular views on the way down. If you want to go to town every night or do a lot of sightseeing, the drive may be inconvenient. For a day trip every few days, it is no big deal.
There is easy access to water and great snorkeling a short walk north of the house at the Milolii Beach Park. There are many beautiful beaches and good restaurants within an hour’s drive. Our house is centrally located between Kailua-Kona and Volcanoes National Park.
If you need supplies during your stay, there are well-stocked grocery stores 20 minutes south, in Ocean View.
My home has one bedroom, 1.5 baths, plus an outdoor full bath with a shower overlooking the ocean. Every room in the house except the half bath offers up an ocean view. Kitchen is easy to cook in and is well-appointed, and the living area is furnished very comfortably and is open and breezy. Bedroom and living room glass French doors open to the ocean view and breeze. The wrap-around lanai includes a small solar heated pool.

Wonderful property for our 30th anniversary trip. All amenities were as shown and we did not need anything. Remote location was a nice thing since we did not need to go to town very much. Owner made sure our stay was special. We highly recommend this property.

My husband and I stayed at Rick’s place for my 30th birthday and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The house had stunning views from every room and the area was peaceful and quiet. As soon as we arrived, we loved Rick’s place so much that we canceled the rest of our plans and decided to stay there the whole trip. We didn’t miss a single sunset or sunrise and even saw a pod of dolphins! Our host Dan was super responsive and so welcoming. We will absolutely be back!

This place was perfect. It is so quiet there! We loved the small pool to cool down in. The view was wonderful. I personally loved all the extras in the kitchen! It is so nice not to have to buy a whole variety of spices! I cooked all our meals and that stove is wonderful! We ate well, rested, laughed and had a wonderful time. Thank you so much! Oh I do have some advice…. Wear mosquito repellent!!! Even if you think they are not out. Wear it! I did not. And I suffered from it! Totally my fault though!!! This place is still worth it!!

This property is amazing! I picked it because we wanted someplace special where we didn’t have to leave to enjoy the beauty of Hawaii. We scored and our visit with Dan was great. We will return to this paradise hopefully again and again!

Enjoyed our stay here in Milolii. The home has everything you need. Quaint neighborhood. The sound of waves crashing and ocean breezes were the best. We will definitely stay here again.

Very comfortable with everything you need except food and theirs 2 markets just 11 miles to the south! Only here 6 nights but could have stayed much longer! Loved the pool and outdoor shower and the chairs out front to view sunsets!! We saw whales - dolphins and turtles right out front!! Dan's a great guy and glad we met him and he help with what ever we wanted!! My wife and I always rate the places we visit and we both said Rick's place is A+!!! Hope to return soon! John & Jenny

Wow! The only critique of this place is that the pictures do not do it justice. Seeing the beautiful green roof as we came down the mountain was exciting. While the home is beautiful, the first moment that we walked out the back door, we were in awe of the ocean beating against the cliffs. We had a high surf warning, and enjoyed a front seat to the waves splashing against the volcanic rock on the patio. It was a wonderful welcome, and instantly put us in awe of the beauty of the area. This home is wonderfully located between Volcanoes National park and Kona. However, getting to Hilo was not an inconvenience. Being in the southern area of the island, it was easy to make both sides of the island very attainable. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend visiting Volcano National Park, Richardson’s Ocean Park and Rainbow Falls in Hilo, the Green Sand Beach, Black Sand Beach, and spending a day enjoying Kona as well. We rented a boat from Kona boat rental, and enjoyed snorkeling at Captain Cook and taking in the ocean. Couldn’t have been a more enjoyable experience and true getaway!! Thank you, Dan, for opening your home, and providing hospitality along the way.

We have been coming to the Hawaiian Islands for the past 15+yrs, having stayed in Hotels and VRBO'S.
Rick's Place only needs to be described with one word WOW!! It was such a beautiful place. We loved the pool, the decor, the outdoor shower, all of it!!
Rick's Place had everything my husband needed to cook with, as well as extra towels, coolers, comfy bed etc... We saw a whale everyday, and a Dolphin, super excited about that.

Such a beautiful place, so hard to leave. We ended up not visiting other sites so we could continue watching the whales, dolphins, birds, waves, etc. and enjoying the well-stocked, open-air home.
We had our wedding ceremony there on the cliff!!

This property comes as advertised: beautiful and well-equipped. We absolutely loved it.
Dan was very welcoming, easy to reach, and provided detailed instructions to assist with the trip out.

My wife and I really enjoyed your home Dan. The way you decorated, your home was just the way we would’ve decorated our VRBO. Anywhere we sat, we could watch the ocean, we enjoyed the whales the first day we got there. The secluded neighborhood was fun to walk through and talk to the neighbors. The house was in a perfect spot to visit the southern end of the island for the first time for us. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils, lots of towels and we sure enjoyed the geckos sneaking into our wine glasses. :-). Will always remember this trip! Thank you so much!

This is the perfect place to get away from it all. We had stayed in Miloli’I before, just down the street, so we knew to bring supplies with us, and that the location was a bit out of the way. Which is one of the reasons we chose to stay at Rick’s Place. Ok I did forget my hairbrush and it was quite an adventure to find one. This is one of the best equipped properties we have ever stayed in. The kitchen has everything you need. I cooked daily. The relaxation began the moment we arrived. The house was decorated (we arrived Dec 23rd) with a small tree, lights and we opened the door to Hawaiian Christmas music and in time for sunset. I can’t describe how relaxing it is just to sit on the lanai and stare at the ocean or sit in the pool and stare at the ocean, take a shower and stare at the ocean or lay in bed and stare at the ocean do yoga on the lanai and stare at the ocean. The house is magical. I brought a kindle but found it more enjoyable to just grab one of the many paper books. Whales arrived on Christmas night. We had daily visits from them, a highlight of the trip. There were a few days that we had plans but decided just to stay at the house. We were there for New Year’s Eve, we watched the fireworks from the lanai. We haven’t relaxed as much on a trip in years, if ever. I am a big question asker and Dan was great dealing with my many questions and was quick with all his response. I have already been looking at the availability so I can book a return trip.

We stayed for 2 weeks and loved every moment. We have a farm in rural northern Colorado and prefer to be away from the city. This house was perfect. It felt like a true Hawaiian home. We spent most of our home time on the lanai, watching the water fireworks, enjoying the pool and hammock. Dan was super nice and wanted our time here to go well. Loved the gecko friends! Mahalo for sharing this special place!

Beautiful setting right on the ocean.

We had a great time staying at this house. It is so relaxing and peaceful. A bit out of the way if you are wanting to sightsee everyday, but only a little over an hour from both Kona and Volcano National Park. We spent most of our time in the pool or sitting by the ocean. We met Dan and he was a great guy. Had told him we were celebrating our anniversary and asked if there were rafts available for the pool. When we arrived, there was a bottle of champagne in the fridge and two new rafts waiting for our use. Great gestures to start our stay. Would highly recommend staying here and we are actually already looking for dates next year.

Derek and I were celebrating our 35th anniversary and both of our birthdays.
We were driving to the house around the 5 o'clock hour.
We die not want to miss the sunset.
We walked into the house where Hawaiian music greeted us. What a welcome!
We couldn't stop looking around at everything. The layout of the house was great and so many fun things to look at.
Then we stepped out onto the patio deck and once again we were stopped in our tracks. The lounge chairs; the hammock; the pool; the cliff deck; and best of all - the view!
Oh, and the outdoor shower. I never took a shower inside - only the outdoor shower where I could see the ocean while cleaning up.
We spent much of our week at the house. It is so inviting and comfortable. We relaxed in the pool with music playing on the outdoor speakers, watching the ocean for dolphins and sea turtles - we saw both!
Dan was a wonderful host and it is obvious he loves his job and the house.
The house was very clean and well-equipped. Everything we needed was there. Even a Thermal coffee carafe to enjoy coffee down on the cliff deck, where we spent each morning.
When we visit the Big Island again, we are definitely going to try and book here again.
We just want to thank Dan for the wonderful hospitality!

Great place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the ocean and this special village. No need to leave the premises. Layout of home is fabulous. The swimming pool is such a plus to sun and enjoy the views. The sunsets are spectacular. Dan is a wonderful host and personable guy. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We will be back.

This was our 2nd time at Rick's Place and it didn't disappoint. The house is equipped with everything you would need, we just stopped off at Safeway in Kailua for food & bottled water, then headed to the house. The location is out of the way but the views are worth it. (If you want to eat out and shop every day, this may not be the place for you).
It was nice meeting Dan, he was quick to respond to any questions we had and we enjoyed learning about the area from him.
We loved the pool and sea side cliff, we saw turtles and fish swimming around. I was excited to see a pod of dolphins swim by and the sunsets are unbelievable. This was by far our most relaxing vacation, we didn't want go home.
We will definitley be back!

5 Star doesn't cut, our stay at Rick's Place was a 10+++. We had stayed here in 2014 and fell in love with it. We didn't think it could have been any better. Boy were we wrong! Fast forward 9 years. From the moment we pulled in the driveway we knew we wouldn't want to leave. Dan you have outdone yourself. From the fully stocked Kitchen, to the openness of the Bedroom, to all the upgrades to the outdoor area there wasn't anything that we needed. Two of the Seven days we were here we decided to not even leave and enjoy the much needed relaxation. Only regret we had was due to a delay in our flight we not only missed being able to meet you, but we missed the first sunset by mere minutes. Mahalo Dan, you are a wonderful host and we will be back. Hopefully during Whale season.

This is an amazing property with every amenity you need to relax and restore your soul. We enjoyed reading in all the comfy seating areas, lounging in the pool and loved the cliff overlook to the ocean. House is stocked for everything you might need from the kitchen, to the bathrooms and outdoor activities. There’s even yoga mats and straw hats. Property manager Dan was amazing and great to work with while booking and all during our stay. Overall a beautiful, peaceful space and one that my husband and I can’t wait to return to. Mahalo nui, Dan!!

The place is absolutely stunning with gorgeous views and we loved how it felt like our own private resort! The bed was super comfortable and the kitchen beyond stocked. Dan was available when we had questions and answered quickly.
The only thing which I feel obligated to say because it effected our sleep was the dog next door. Unfortunately he had a loud booming bark and woke us up throughout the night and early each morning starting as early as 430am.
Even with the dog this place was one of the best stays we’ve ever had! So just bring ear plugs or a white noise machine!

The pictures don't do it justice! We spent so much time on the lanai just taking in the beauty.... amazing any time of day but the sunsets are spectacular. It's so relaxing and we would have loved to stay longer. This home is really comfortable. We enjoyed eating on the lanai each day and we loved the outdoor shower! Dan is an incredible host, very responsive and helpful whenever we needed something. We will definitely be back!

The owner of this property is absolutely amazing. Great person to deal with and he makes you feel like your his number one priority. Absolutely, gorgeous and quiet place to stay and recharge on vacation. If we visit the island again, we will definitely book this property.

We enjoyed our stay so much that we are considering moving to the area 😊
5.0 / 5.0
This place is totally as great as it looks in the pictures. It was so pleasant that we spent a nearly two of our days on the island just lounging at the property. It is also well-appointed with the little things that make a property comfortable to spend time in rather than just being a roof over your head with amenities. It is well-stocked with everything you will need: towels (beach and bath), cooking necessities (pots, pans, and spices, oils). If we make it back, we will definitely stay here again. The only thing renters should keep in mind is that it is in a remote area of the island so it will be a bit of a drive to most attractions.

This was an amazing property and exactly what we needed to spend time together and relax. Landed in Kona and after a late lunch went to the grocery store and headed to the property. When we walked in there was Hawaiian music playing, a soft breeze and that amazing view. We saw dolphins, turtles and even a reef shark while we relaxed in the pool. The host was very responsive to any of our questions and has created a comfortable and inviting home. On the last day my husband kept asking to rewind the week and start over. For us this was the perfect mix of relaxation and quiet that we were looking for to spend our anniversary together. Definitley plan to return.

This home exceeds expectations at every turn. We wanted for nothing. We have used VRBO every vacation for the last 10+ years. Having stayed in some beautiful properties I must say this home is over the top fantastic. If you are looking for a place to re-charge and be totally relaxed, look no further. FYI...The pictures don't do it justice!

Our stay was perfect—and that’s not hyperbole! My communication with Dan was extraordinary. He was consistently helpful, responsive and good natured. The house itself could not be better designed to focus on the amazing surroundings, it’s a remarkable interweave of outdoor and indoor living. I have never stayed in a short term rental that was so well stocked. Rick’s Place is truly in a class of its own!

This has been by far the best rental experience we have had yet. The house and host were incredible. With all the great things to do and see in Hawaii we found the house to be a highlight of our trip. If you are looking to get away from the crowds and have a resort feel at the same time this is the place to stay!

Such a wonderful house! Dan is a very gracious and helpful host, and the neighborhood is safe and friendly. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. You can venture out for the day, but you'll want to spend time here.

A great place to relax. The outdoor shower is a real treat, as are the geckos who like apricot jam. Dan is a wonderful host, available but not intrusive. Highly recommended

My wife and I spent a week here and had an amazing time. The place is just like the pictures with an amazing view of the ocean and coastline. We spent the majority of our time at the house and lounging in the pool. We really enjoyed have the indoor and outdoor speakers that you can connect to via bluetooth. The outdoor shower is amazing. Would definitely recommend staying here.
The kitchen is well stocked with all the utensils and appliances you need. Also, a large selection of staples if you run out of anything. I do recommend doing your grocery shopping in Kona as the stores near the unit are limited to your basic supplies.
The host was very friendly and responsive to any questions or concerns about the unit.

This property was an absolute dream! We were there to celebrate 40 years married and it was a perfect place to relax, appreciate life and the beauty of Hawaii and majesty of God’s work! It’s hard to describe how wonderful our experience was. We are grateful for the time spent and dream of returning! Peaceful area, amazing scenery in every direction, no reason to leave if you are looking for relaxation. Cupboards were stocked with more than expected, as well as pots and pans for cooking. Bed was comfortable, breezes and fans kept the climate delightful, and the constant view of the ocean was perfection. We hated to leave! Thank you Dan! Your gift of sharing this property is appreciated!
