About this house rental

This home was built in 1895 and is listed on the National Historic Register. Property is a half acre and the front porch overlooks 2/3 of it. We are on the north side of Tybee, away from the commercial area , crowds and traffic. For families this is far and away the most desirable part of the island. The beach is 120 yards from the front of the house and Jaycee Park is right behind the House. There is a house on the left and one on the right that are both 56 feet from our house - you will not be looking out the window at a wall of the house beside you. The park has walking trails, Pickleball Court, Frisbee Golf and a brand new Kidde Park. This is a great house for 2 family’s or a generational family reunion. This is where our best reviews and repeat renters come from. The home was originally occupied by the base doctor of Fort Screven. When the base was deactivated it was purchased by one of the previous mayors of Savannah, my parents purchased it from his estate in the 60’s. The beautifully remodeled full kitchen has granite countertops, high end appliances (including two dishwashers, an oversized refrigerator, a six burner smooth top stove, and a stereo system with an MP3/IPod hookup). There is seating for 16 people at the dining room table. The den/library houses a flat screened TV and a DVD player. A marvelous open porch graces three sides of this home with approximately 2000 square feet of outdoor living area and includes rocking chairs and two picnic tables. The first floor features one bedroom (originally the 'Stryker's Quarters'), which is located just off the kitchen. There is a queen size bed in this bedroom, a separate air conditioner, claw tub bath, and its own entrance. There is additional bathroom with a shower on the first floor. There are three bedrooms and three full baths on the second floor, which also has about 1000 square feet of open porches. Each of the bedrooms on the second floor is abundantly sized, has tall ceilings, and a working transom above the door. All bedrooms, as well as the kitchen, living room, and downstairs hallway, have ceiling fans. The third floor has two bedrooms and one bath: one bedroom has a double and queen beds, the other has a queen, a double, and a twin bed. This house was originally built as a 3 bedroom house with a servant quarter on the first floor. The two bedroom on the third floor were added later. The best “fit” for this house is couples on the 2nd floor and older children and young adults in the other bedrooms - the third floor is really not suitable for young children and the servants quarters is too remote . This grand home is for the exclusive use of its guests. The beach is 120 yards from the front door through a quiet (no traffic) neighborhood. Also there is no nearby public beach access parking making this one of the most least occupied sections of beach on the island. Lastly this was one of the houses considered for the movie “The Big Chill”. We have been told by guest that it has that “vibe “ to it. Parties and events such as weddings and graduation parties are not permitted.

The Fort Screven and North Beach area offers fascinating military history, beautiful dunes, long beaches, a nice park, and an eclectic community of homes that is fun to observe on foot or bike. The natural dunes, with sea oats and other dune plants and animals, along with a view of Tybee Roads and Daufuskie and Hilton Head islands, make for a beautiful natural setting worth visiting. Also attracting attention are the mammoth container cargo ships, some almost as long as a 75 story building, plowing the waters of Savannah harbor. The Fort Screven installation gave Tybee a military character for more than 50 years, when 30 percent of Tybee Island's population consisted of military personnel. Today, the former base is a National Historic District. Behind the Officers' Row houses is the former parade ground. Today it is Jaycee Park. Lieutenant Colonel George Catlett Marshall (who was responsible later in his career for the Marshall Plan for the economic reorganization of Europe after World War II) lived next door. During his tenure at Fort Screven, the City of Savannah gave the crape myrtles to the fort as thanks to Marshall and his community minded command. A small creek winds through the park, adding to its attractiveness, as do the Live Oaks, cedars, bayberries, and wax myrtles.

The Tybee vacation home was very spacious and clean. We especially enjoyed outdoor dining and visiting on the huge wraparound porches. The park and playground was a very short walk and perfect for our two small grandchildren. The walk to the beach was also short and private and the owner provided a beach cart which was very nice. The bedrooms and bathrooms were great band lots of room to relax.

We decided to visit Tybee Island for our annual family trip (4 seniors, 4 adults, and 3 teenagers). This property was perfect for our group. Plenty of room so that people could have their own space but also a large dining room table and living rooms that we could hang out together. It is also decorated with interesting historical and local touches that I appreciated learning about. The two levels of wrap around porches were fantastic, and many of us sat outside during our down times. It was a short, easy walk to get to the beach from this house, and the beach was never crowded. The kitchen was well equipped for us to prepare most of our meals. The owners were very friendly and responsive and were quick to offer suggestions or answer any questions that we had. The house is located on the northern part of Tybee Island, which is quieter and less touristy/crowded than the southern part. It was also an easy drive to get into Savannah, so we spent several afternoons exploring parts of Savannah as well. One of my nephews said that this was one of his favorite houses all time that we have rented on our trips, and we have been doing these trips for at least 10 years.

We (my family of 4) live locally to Tybee and had family visiting from out of state. There were 12 of us total, so renting a large house was the best option. The short walk to the private beach (no crowds) was an added bonus! This historic home was SO stunning. It’s updated where it needs to be, and has the remaining original late 1800’s charm throughout the whole home. You can feel the warmth of the owners family as you navigate through the house, with the home being equipped with anything you could possibly need for a family of all ages. We had 6 kids, ages 4-14, with our group, and the rest adults. So it was necessary for us to cook meals a few nights during our stay. The kitchen was stocked with all things you would need to feed a large group. It was greatly appreciated, as we’ve been to other rentals and they barely have any pots/pans and utensils. Not the case here! We highly recommend this home, and have it saved to potentially rent it again in the future! Thank you to John and your family for being great hosts! -Melissa

There were 12 in our family group and this house accommodated us well. We never felt crowded. The historic home was charming with beautiful architectural details. It’s located a short, easy walk from the beach and a thirty minute drive to Savannah. The host was very easy to reach and was super friendly.
