About this cottage rental
This is a beautiful jewel of a house. It's all one level and close to shopping, activities such as hiking, biking, zip lines, farm tours, horseback riding, art school, dining and Haleakala National Park. Just an eight to ten minute drive to white sand beaches.
This 20-acre shade-grown coffee plantation borders a forest preserve and is completely private. A stream runs through the property year-round attracting a variety of wildlife. There are amazing panoramic ocean, jungle and mountain views and a seasonal waterfall view. Guests have the option of booking a personal tour of the farm and grounds which includes a short hike to see the ancient Hawaiian pictographs, an artesian spring and gives an overview where all the private trails, natural pools and picnic areas are. Reservations include full access to all the grounds and amenities on the farm. The cottage is located over a half mile from the main farmhouse and is completely private. It includes:
30 Mbps Wi-Fi, W/D and Detergent, Barbecue with Charcoal and Kiawe Wood provided, Refrigerator, Dishwasher, Range, Microwave, Juicer, Blender, Toaster Oven and Pour-Over and French Press Coffee equipment provided. There is a spacious shower with ocean view. Hair Dryer, Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash Provided. Fully furnished with King-sized bed with Queen Sofa Bed. Cable Smart TV with Netflix and Amazon Prime. Iron and Ironing Board. Beach Towels, Beach Chairs and Cooler Provided. Flower cutting, Fruit and Herb picking (seasonal) privileges included. Optional (additional fee):
Historical/Jungle tour: 2 hours and includes an overview of all the trails on the private grounds, archeological sites, the history of the valley and the medicinal uses of the jungle plants. $75.00 per person.
Organic farm and pesticide free area for those with sensitivities. All one level for those with some mobility issues. Not wheelchair accessible though!
Guests have access to miles of private trails on the grounds of Maliko Estate Coffee where the cottage is located. Swimming in the year-round stream is a highlight. Great bird watching too!
Guests are greeted upon arrival, offered a jungle tour and are bid farewell on departure day too. Owners are nearby if they're needed and have advice and recommendations for Maui activities.
The historic paniolo town of Makawao is only 2 miles away. The paniolo are the Hawaiian cowboys and they still can be seen riding their horses or stopping by the local cantinas for a beer after riding the upcountry ranches. Great shopping and dining is found in Makawao, Haiku and nearby Paia. Makawao is considered one of the best art scenes in the nation.
You will definitely need a car. You won't need a four-wheel drive though. The roads are fine. There is bus transportation but not near the farm which is too rural and uncrowded for a bus stop.
The cabin comes equipped with a koi pond and two resident koi named Lilo and Stitch. Guests are asked to feed them. They'll remind you themselves if you forget!
Owner Sydney Smith is a designer by trade and also a farmer. She is the president of the Maui Coffee Association and a board member of the Maui County Ag Working Group.

Wonderful cottage in the hills. The cabin itself is well appointed and very comfortable. Sydney was very responsive to any questions or concerns, and gave us a very informative and interesting tour of the large property on which the cabin is situated.

Home and owner are simply amazing! The house is thoughtfully stocked, spotlessly clean, and located on the most amazing and indescribable land. You will never get the chance to see and hike a space like this in total privacy, donât miss out on that. Sydney was incredibly kind and helpful before and during our stay. Hand down our favorite stay on the island!!!

House is close to the road making it noisy when traffic picks up in the morning- the only flaw we can find.

We spent 5 nights in the jungle and enjoyed the whole range of Maui weather, wind, rain, thunder (!), sun, warm, perfection. Sidneyâs unit is very unique and almost perfect for everything we wanted. Peace and quiet, weather excluded, we lived it with our tour starting us off. Such amazing property, hikes, swims, collecting avocados and lilikoi, plus more.
Sidney is the perfect host/historian/treasure chest of knowledge. Her tour of the property includes 30 years of history of the area, plus so much more. She was on to of all of our questions, ready just in case the power went off, and there at the send of a text. We felt cared for.
The house was just what we needed. Great size kitchen, easy to clean up after one of our dinner projects, the grill was ready, the coffee, (following Sidneyâs carefully laid out process) was great. We saw where the beans grewâŚa first for us.
We will return ASAPâŚ..

Sydney's property is one of a kind! If you're looking for a laid back location to experience up country Maui, this is the place. We loved learning about the history of the property and enjoyed the beautiful views from the balcony. We hope to return someday!

The home itself was clean and functional with an astounding array of artistic details created by the owners. The view was also wonderful and we were gifted a rainstorm and waterfall! Our host Sydney even gave us a tour and a bag of her estate-grown coffee. We are so grateful for this unique and powerful experience of Maui. Thank you, Sydney!

My husband and I wanted a quiet place in the mountains to get away, and boy did we find it. The property is one of a kind and has an immense amount of history that you won't find anywhere else. Perfect for couples! The host Sydney was amazing. Couldn't recommend higher.

The cabin is a comfortable, cozy retreat with a killer view of jungle and ocean. Everything inside is designed to help you relax and unwind -- big roomy sofa, well-stocked kitchen with high-end appliances, king size bed. The wrap around porch is perfect for morning coffee, reading a book all day, or evening cocktails. And the tour of the property was beyond anything we imagined. This is historically-important land nurtured to lushness by Sydney and her husband. The surprises they have found are amazing. Be sure to see the 200 year old Mango tree and the petroglyphs. We hope to return soon!

Heart of the jungle
The property is truly amazing! Through the tour we learned all about the history of the property and got to see some incredible plants. As you would expect, jungle wildlife (geckos and mosquitoes) are present but they are generally friendly!

My husband and I had an amazing stay. The zen-like cabin was amazing and just what we needed. Sydney's (owner) attention to detail was not lost on us...from the natural river rock shower to the creative inlaid tiles in the kitchen...so many eclectic and enchanting finds with the expansive view as a back drop. Sydney took us on a tour of the coffee farm and it was the highlight of our Maui trip. The welcoming host, lush landscape, petroglyphs and peaceful atmosphere...well, we didn't want to leave! We not only had a relaxing vacation but we feel we have a new friend. We will be back!

Outstanding experience
The house was very clean and set up well for our stay. Lovely kitchen and surrounding deck. Loved the expansive view and surround sound of the forest birds. Sydney provided an excellent tour and history of the island. Too bad the drought has dried up the waterfall on the property. Very convenient access to the Road to Hana sights and upcountry area.

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this beautiful cottage. It was located in a wonderful spot for bird watching and enjoying the sounds of nature. The property was a great adventure visiting the petroglyphs, stream and wonderful old trees. It was especially interesting after the tour given by the owner Sydney who is incredibly knowledgeable of the area and Hawaiian culture. Sydney is a great host. She is always available for questions and ready to help. This was our last stop in our three island adventure and it was the perfect way to conclude and wonderful visit to Hawaii. We certainly hope to be back in the next two years and would love to stay in the cottage again.

We really enjoyed our way-too-fast 9 nights at this lovely property over Christmas. Sydney is a fascinating individual - talking to her for a couple hours is something I will remember for decades to come! The property is an astonishingly large estate (coffee farm) - you literally need the map so as to not get lost over these 25+ acres! There is just something incredibly satisfying about picking an orange from a tree and immediately eating it. The cabin itself was great - a lot of attention to detail here on her part. The best-equipped kitchen I have ever seen in a short-term rental. Boogie boards to borrow. Various kitchen condiments - so we did not have to go out and buy them. Great advice from her on local restaurants and groceries. My advice is to start literally every morning with a 45-minute stroll around the grounds - after a nice cup of coffee on the lanai while overlooking the waterfall and Pacific Ocean. She might laugh that I am writing this - but the most striking (revealing) thing to me about Sydney and her husband is the utterly basic mailbox their own marvelous house has many hundreds of yards away at the roadside - it looks like it cost maybe max $25 and must have 25 years of rust on it (?); I just loved this as a symbol of the kind of old-school Hawaiian modesty that she and her husband exude! In my neighborhood in suburban Atlanta, someone would surely make a fuss about such a "crappy" mailbox. Just a great stay on a lovely Maui trip! Saying 5-stars just does not do this place justice!

We stay in Maui every year but always ocean front. This was a wonderful break from routine! The cabin is lovely set in the Maui rainforest but still a close drive to some of the best beaches on island. I highly recommend staying here for at least part of your vacation!

Usually our Maui stays default to oceanside stays. This time, we shook things up and stayed with Sydney on her coffee plantation. WOW! At night, after an evening of cocktails on the lanai watching the sun go down behind the West Maui mountains, the birds serenaded us to sleep. The property is gorgeous and Sydney's passion for the heritage & history of it is apparent. The cottage was well-equipped, her coffee delectable, the honey divine. And, we were just 5 minutes from Makawao shopping (and I did) and mountain bike trails (and hubby did). Sydney was super helpful with local resources and very responsive to questions before & during our trip. We will be returning in 2022!

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of our Maui babymoon. We really loved the place. It has a great location in the upcountry, close to the cute little town of Makawao, a short drive from the beach and Haleakala. Our host Sydney was fantastic, very friendly but gave us space if we wanted to have privacy. She gave my wife a farm tour which was awesome and she learned a lot about the area. This place does not have the cheap "continuous rental" feel like some places do. The view from the back porch is incredible! There is no AC there which could be a turnoff for some people, but it's in an area that is much cooler than the lowland beaches. There are also loud, invasive coqui frogs that chirp all night and roosters that seem to be confused about when sunrise is, but this would be a thing anywhere in the area. Just bring earplugs.Overall we loved the place and would definitely stay there again on a future visit to Maui.

We stayed in several spots during our 11-day trip to Maui, and this was a really special spot. A check-list for departing the premise sums up the experience beautifully, "There's no need to clean the cottage before you leave. You're on vacation, leave that to us. "We wanted to avoid people with the pandemic, and this fit the bill. The cottage was amazing, with beautiful views, and the BEST rainbows. We LOVED the night time sounds, sitting on the lanai for hours in the evening (and the mornings). The very best part of renting the space was our host, Sydney. She is amazing! She showed us around the property (which is a must), and shared history, information on the flora and fauna, and her own incredible story with the property. It's priceless to have spring-fed pools to explore and swim in all to yourself (you aren't sharing with anyone!) Our little one loved foraging for passion fruit and tangerines on the property. Sydney even helped me via text with questions I had later in our trip. She was so beyond wonderful and helpful. The only downside to the property is the location right on the road. You do hear light traffic most of the day and night, but it was a small price to pay for the other positives, and the roosters drown out the traffic noise in the early morning. :) My eco-heart was so happy knowing Sydney composts on the property too - such a bonus!
