I've stayed at the Grey Gull at least a dozen times over the years. The location is fantastic overlooking the sea in the form of Loch Gilp, the old pier and lighthouse and backing onto the picturesque Crinan Canal - hard to find better! The staff are lovely (but run off their feet) and the rooms immaculate after refurbishments a few years ago. There is a lounge area ajoining a large restaurant and bar area both of which are open to all comers.
As stated I have stayed at the Grey Gull many times over the years, I have an affection for the place and this is the first time I've been less than happy. We stayed the first week of June 2024. This review refers to rooms 2 and 3 which are on the ground floor - useful as the hotel has no lift and the stairways are quite steep. We booked a double room which turned out to be room 2. Room 2 wasn't the smallest room we'd ever stayed in but it's probably the smallest in the hotel which generally has huge spacious rooms. The double bed seemed actually smaller than a double but as neither of us are exactly petite (not huge either) we asked if we could pay for an upgrade. We originally paid just over £500 for 5 nights and the upgrade to room 3 next door came in at another £170. Room 3 was clean and spacious (twice the size as room 2) with King sized and single beds. The WiFi signal was almost non existent however and wouldn't connect to phones or notepad PC (maybe that was our fault...) and the TV wasn't receiving. I fixed the latter myself by manipulating the cable and connectors which hung beneath until getting "the right spot" the TV sprung to life - no big deal. The main problem was that there was barely any shower pressure just a dribble and the water that DID emerge was barely lukewarm. The manager Eleanor apologised and did her very best to get the boiler working properly but we spent the 5 days showering in a cupful (slight exaggeration, it may have been two cupfuls) of tepid water. The water did at least heat up on the last day however the pressure remained moribund. We couldn't even wash up in the sink as the integrated plug wouldn't stay in the down position and stubbornly kept springing back and gleefully emptying the contents into the drain. I want to say that the staff were lovely.

Location was good for our needs. It was a good price. The room was spacious.
The carpets were grubby in the hall and bedroom. There was only cold / luke warm water for a morning shower. It seemed to be under staffed based on our check in and check out experience but the two staff we met were very nice.

Cleanliness. Staff welcoming. Surprised by the hot tubs
Coffee. Only used Nescafé from a tin.
Unfortunately had to move rooms twice and was offered a 3rd move.
Husband surprised me with having an upgraded room with a bath in the room as a treat unfortunately there was no cold water to the room. Moved to another similar room same problem.
Third room offer had no bath.
Problem with second room room 6 when tv which was up high to the ceiling in the lounge it was loud in the room as it was directly under us

I booked two rooms for colleagues, one was fine, the other didnt have a TV so they were moved to another room which had no heating or curtains.
Inadequate room with no heatinfg or curtains and because this wasn't thought about by my colleague until bed time there was no staff around to help.

The location is superb. The Barman Jay did all he could to make up for the shortcomings. The Restaurant serves good food.
We arrived as arranged at 9 pm, nobody on Reception just an envelope with room key. Found there was no hot water, called emergency number and barman was sent to explain, he asked whether we had been informed they had run out of Calor Gas so no hot water or heating in corridors or restaurant. It was so cold we had to go to bed fully clothed, the shower rail was hanging off wall and curtain was hanging down. Next day they moved us to a warmer room, still no hot water until mid afternoon and there was mould in the shower tray. Staff refused to take any responsibility for not informing us there would be no hot water when we arrived, so we had no chance to make alternative arrangements.

Generally the rest of the hotel was run down, the staff were very good but service was slow resulting in a long wait for food.

Outstanding staff, great room, perfect location for our visit.
No bar on Sunday evening, as a Scot returning from the dark side of down south, would liked to have wallowed in booze ha ha. And this is nothing on The Grey Gull, I wish I had made use of the Hot Tub. My Bad.

The hotel is located along the waterfront. Our room overlooked that.
The mattress turned the bed into a medieval torture device.
Coffee at breakfast was poor.
Parking lot was full so we had to park somewhere else

Tyhe staff were very friendly and helpful, the breakfasts were very good and the location overlooking the loch and close to the bus stop was ideal for me.
If I'm being picky then the window was rather small, but the view overlooking the canal was pleasant, and given how hot the weather was I was rather glad that I was in a north facing room.

Breakfast was good both mornings. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was very clean. Great location.
First morning my breakfast could have been a bit warmer if I was being super critical. Dinner was very tasty but my husband's steak pie had no gravy, just meat. He gave this feedback to the staff and they took his comments on board

The only good thing about this hotel is the view.
I was put off from the off.
The woman at reception handed me my key card and that was it. I had to ask which room number we were and how to get to the room.
Entered the room and although it looked nice to begin with it was far from it. The floors are at an angle, the bathroom door didn't close properly, the beds were uncomfortable, they also didn't have mattress or pillow protectors.
The hotel advertises free WiFi however neither myself or my child could get connected.
The breakfast in the morning was very basic. The sausages tasted very processed. We left there hungry.
I booked a triple room, a room with a double bed, single bed and a sofa bed with a sea view. We were given a room with a double bed and a single and if you craned your neck you could see the sea.

Had a family room with water view - kids loved the bath in the room - had a wash whilst watching TV!
Trick getting through some of the doors - narrow & heavy

View was lovely. Room itself was a nice size.
The wifi wasn't great. And the bed wasnt very comfy. We only had 1 pillow each. And 1 set of towels.

-Breakfast was excellent but my husband thought it was just ok. We both enjoyed our dinners. The restaurant was nicely decorated and set out. The view from the restaurant was excellent. Loved the huge picture windows which made the room feel airy and spacious. The staff in the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast were lovely, warm, efficient, polite, helpful, which all made for a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. The sauna worked and as someone who understands the benefits of infrared sauna I was really happy with this. The area is full of historical landmarks, Dunadd being the major one that had drawn us to the area. We had Loch Gilp to the front of the Hotel and the Crinan Canal at the back.
It needs it's decor refreshed. There was no view from the small window in our room which looked out to the side of the hotel and the building opposite and 1 out of 5 bulbs in the chandelier was working. The 2 bedside lamps worked but one only had 1 out of the 2 bulbs working making it seem a rather dull and dingy room. There was an electric heater in the room that didn't even take the chill from the air. It was the only form of room heating. The receptionist was not as cordial as the other staff and told us we were too early for booking in which was at 3pm.We were about 30mins to this time. However, I had asked for check-in for 1pm which was acknowledge and I have the email confirming this on my phone but I wasn't going to make an issue of it unless she did. Happily she did not and her slightly off attitude may have been due to having issues with her computer. When we asked if the bar was open she said she could facilitate this but I felt I would be inconveniencing her if we did this. Happily this encounter led us to go out and visit a few historical sites in the area and also walk along the canal.

The staff here are truly amazing! They made our long weekend superb for sure. They went above and beyond for us during our stay! I really cant commend them highly enough. So friendly and attentive. They were a really great team of waiting/bar/breakfast and reception staff, and they were all so hard-working and friendly. They are ALL a credit to the Hotel. There was one young chap (didn't get his name sadly) but he was on duty all 3 of the evenings we had dinner and drinks in the hotel lounge and even though as the weekend progressed the restaurant and lounge got busier, he was still as equally cheery, attentive and helpful to all patrons and professional in his role. All the waiting staff were. I think they give the hotel a great name as good customer service is just so important in hospitality - and this team have it in droves. They are a credit to the hotel. My hope is the management look after them well as good staff are very hard to find/retain in this current climate, and that staff rightly keep all their tips is important in this role. So my hope is that they are paid well & fairly
As for the food, it was fantastic. The breakfasts were plentiful and tasty, and the evening meals were outstanding, full marks to chef! From scallops to the delicious steak pie the quality of produce was just great and portions more than ample.
Our room was immaculate and the beds were really comfortable and cosy too, with a perfect view. It was also a large room we had booked and it was just perfect our requirements with a very large dog - who they could not have made more welcome or be more accommodating with. That in itself was very much appreciated and enabled us to relax in the evening - especially as the staff kindly reserved us a table in the lounge area big enough to accommodate us all for dinner each evening. All round TOP marks. The Grey Gull Hotel is in a lovely location with the most outstanding staff. Cant wait to return!

We opted for a sea view room. Yes, we certainly had a lovely view but it's a shame that the large television virtually covered the window. The room itself lends itself to a single room rather than double. Living in cramped conditions was difficult. We saw, with envy, other rooms (not sea view) which were twice the size. Breakfast and dinner menus were good.
There was no contact. I tried about 15 times during the day to explain that were would be delayed. Each time, the kine went to voicemail but no one ever returned the call. It led to feeling anxious as to whether we would have access at 2200 hours.
