Thoroughly enjoyed. Location is far from Alleppey but you get to stay in a less touristy spot and experience more of the real lifestyle of people living amongst the backwaters. Beautiful accommodation, comfy beds and clean private bathroom is a huge bonus.
Upon arrival, the host showed me to the room and wandered off. From other reviews I expected a warmer welcome and an invitation to explore the area / kayak / boat trips / anything.. but nothing was offered. An hour after I was shown to my room, I took the liberty of asking myself, the host then called around and organised the activities I was interested in and arranged it well. From there on, I felt welcomed and enjoyed my stay even more. Although it wasn't as much of an inviting-family-homestay experience I expected, I understand why they kept their distance as there were many negative comments by domestic Indian tourists saying the family was too forward and involved, they found any opportunity to complain. To these people I say: SHUTUP AND GO TO A HOTEL. This is a homestay and those are the things you should expect. I hope my feedback here is taken productively by the host as I truly enjoyed the experience. Perhaps it would be a good idea to cater your approach to travellers between locals and foreigners as the couple who stayed in the unit next to me felt a similar way.

It's in a quiet and remote place but it's a little too expensive.
Breakfast was poor.

This was a home stay. The two rooms were pasable. The washrooms were clean. The two boys of the family were friendly. The breakfast served was home cooked but with no choice.
The location... roads were under construction and we had to take a long detour. We were not given any advisory and reached after midnight. On the arrival day they did not even offer dinner and said we should arrange for it outside. There was no water in the room and they did not check if we needed anything. On both days there was passable breakfast, with no choice. Basically they did not have a functional kitchen. We paid too much for the services offered.

Room was spotless and comfortable. We appreciated the air con! Really special location, nice and quiet with lovely river views. Wonderful to sit out on the terrace and watch the boats float by. We really felt immersed in the local way of life. Sandya, her husband and sons Akash & Akarsh were so friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We were served some really tasty home cooking taking into account our preferences. This included fish that Akarsh had freshly caught. They were really helpful in giving advice and guidance about what to do in the area, including a sunset boat ride which we really enjoyed. The family are opening a restaurant in January which will be a fantastic asset to the homestay and the area.
There was no hot water in shower, not a massive issue for us as the weather was so warm. We were brought hot water on request. The homestay might not suit someone who likes to have choice in what and when they want to eat but we personally loved the family style cooking/eating.

The staff were friendly.
There was big cockroach in the room. Their water tank needs urgent cleaning. Water in the bathroom was deeply stained . Wifi was with weak signal and stopped working soon. No TV. Price paid was high comparing with the facility provided.

Beautiful rural setting right next to the river and paddy fields and a manual paddle ferry boat over to the next island. Poopally village 1/2 km away with nice clothes shop and tea/coffee shop.
Simple tasty Indian breakfasts. Host also prepared simple veg evening meals and one delicious fish curry. They are preparing a remarkable restaurant on site soon.
Host family all very friendly and helpful.

Excellent and clean homestay with great location just in a peaceful area, in backwaters. Very nice welcoming from Sandhya and his family! Great experience to share breakfast and diner (Sandhya is a great cook btw!) with her 2 kids and to learn about how like is going on in backwaters. They kindly arrange ayurvedic massage for us, and sunrise boat trip in backwaters. Both experience were great! If you are looking for a peaceful and amazingly located homestay with great hosts, do not hesitate to visit Punerjeni!!
For us was not a major problem, but the is no hot water in shower :-)

the family was so sweet and hospitable!! adored them. i could have stayed much longer just hanging out. the rooms were clean and cozy and the AC worked so well I had to turn it off. the location was quite and beautiful! one of my favorite home-stays in India 🥰

Hospitality, clean, patio, nice family
Price/quality not in line.
No hot water also not in the shower.
Noisy AC: 1st night okay, 2nd night noisy. Also noisy AC of neighbour kept us awake.
Rental bikes in poor condition, no gears.
Home cooking: no choice, bit boring, expensive.
Giving useful information would have been nice, for eg.
Would have been nice to have been given the information in advance that for 20 roepies one can take the local governmentboat to Alleppey: would have been a great experience for a tourist.
- the sunset boattrip was not well communicated: 1000roepies ended up to be for 1 hour, instead of the whole trip( 2 hour)
Also volunteer other restaurant options in the neighbourhood. A good fish restaurant was 2km away

Great location right on the river bank. The family was so friendly and helpful. They showed us everything. Our children and we also felt like we had stayed at good friends. Our boys were happy to swim in the river and fish with their new friend. They told us a lot about Kerala life and about cooking, because min is really excellent cook 😁 We were really happy to stay there and will neber forget.

Wonderful stay at the homely guesthouse right by the water! The house it well located with a beautiful view on the canal, very quiet, I had a nice view on the water from my little terrace at my room. The room was comfortable and equipped with everything needed. The guesthouse is led by a family and I felt like a part of the family for two days. I helped cooking once and learned fishing from on the son's. I was served delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner, and tea and coffee during the day. I was taken on a boat tour (privat with a little boat of a family friend) through the bigger and tiny jungle-like canals of the backwaters. I felt very welcomed and would come back anytime!! Highly recommended :)

Very kind, warmhearted, and friendly hosts, with a perfectly located room directly at the river. Very good cuisine, too.
We leaned a lot about the area, customs, plants, and cooking during the stay.
The room was very clean and comfortable.
We'd highly recommend this place to stay in the backwaters.

Such a clean and quiet home stay in a wonderful location right on the canal, just out of the busy central town of Alleppey in the rice fields, we had a great time. We were looked after by the loveliest family and cooked really nice traditional south India meals everyday. We were able to hire a scooter to get around and explore the rice fields. It was the cleanest place I’ve stayed all throughout India. Thanks for looking after us!

We had the most wonderful stay at Punerjeni homes - it was the highlight of our trip. Sandhya, Sinu, Akash and Akarsh were the perfect hosts - so welcoming and friendly and they did everything to make us feel very much at home. They organised an amazing sunrise boat trip, gave us lots of recommendations on what to see and do, helped us arrange transportation and they also took us fishing. We loved exploring and learning about the backwaters with them.
The location was perfect, it’s right on the waterfront and so peaceful. We loved sitting under the veranda of the cottage and watching the world go by - it was very relaxing and beautiful. The accommodation was also lovely, very comfortable and clean with the added bonus of air con.
We loved meal times at Punerjeni Homes. The home cooked food by Sandhya was incredible, everything was so delicious and a lot of the produce is either grown in their garden or sourced locally. Meal times were also great because we got to chat to the whole family and we loved sharing stories and hearing about life in Alleppey.
It really was a great experience and we’re so glad we found Punerjeni Homes. We’d highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Alleppey. Thank you for an amazing stay!
Nothing, everything was perfect.

Punerjeni is everything that the previous reviewers have been saying and more.
The homestay is a separate dwelling facing the backwaters. It is simply decorated, but spotlessly clean and has everything you'd need.
You can relax on the verandah to watch the world go by on the waters or take a boat ride or go for a walk in the village through the narrow alleys between houses and gardens...
This business is clearly a labour of love and a matter of pride for the whole family. They seem to intuitively know what you like. And it is the little things that they do, that sets them apart...
For example, Sandhya, the hostess is always there, smiling and helpful, but discretely out of your way. She is a great cook. She prepared delicious curry from banana flowers which were home grown, and from clams which the children had handpicked from the back waters. Akash (their elder son) brought us tea and sat down and talked to us about his school and showed us his medals. Akarsh (their younger son) showed us his fishing photos and gave us tips on the best route for our evening walk. Sinu (Sandhya's husband) showed us what the tamarind (kochinel) fruit looks like before it's market packed and rushed in to take us to show a man who was toddy tapping.
In the short span of a day, we enjoyed a walk in the village, learnt about their daily life, how they celebrate festivals, about rice growing, their schooling and ambitions...
We could have easily spent 2-3 days in their beautiful village enjoying their genuine hospitality. May be some other time soon...
