About this cabin rental
The Dakotais a new, modern, four-season, log-sided cabin on Lake Algonquin in the southern Adirondack mountains. The Yogi and the Dakota were built in 2016 by David and Jennifer Woodward of Wells, NY. The cabins were named after their two dogs they raised for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. My Wife Crystal and I have been guests at both cabins many times throughout the years. David and Jennifer were always the most gracious of hosts which made the experience that much more special.
In 2022 Crystal and I became the new owners of the cabins. We could not be more thrilled to be able to continue to enjoy the cabins and to have the opportunity to share them the with our guests.
We are a family friendly property requiring guests to be a minimum age 25 unless accompanied by a guardian. Dogs are welcome with prior approval. In the spring, summer, and fall, enjoy canoeing, kayaking and fishing using our canoe and kayaks. Paddle up the Sacandaga River or over to Lake Algonquin directly from our property . Our boats are available based on spring and fall weather. Boats are always available from May 15th to October 1st. Our grill is charcoal, just bring your charcoal and lighter fluid and enjoy outdoor cooking! - or just sit back and enjoy the wilderness that is the North Country. Behind the cabin is a large flat area for activities and a fire pit for s'mores and relaxing in the evenings. On a clear night, the stars are amazing!
It's a short walk or drive to the town beach, where you can swim or soak up the sun. Or, explore the many hiking trails in the area, leading up mountains, to waterfalls, or into the solitude of the forest.
In the fall, the leaves are spectacular! There are many beautiful scenic byways you can drive right from our doorstep.
In the winter, enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, tubing, ice skating and snowmobiling. Hamilton County has some of the best Snowmobiling in NY. Our cabin is directly on the NYS trail system with access to hundreds of miles of groomed, marked snowmobile trails. We also have plenty of parking for your snowmobile trailer.
The first floor features a living room with a leather sectional sofa and a 42"flat-screen television with DIRECTV and a DVD player. The dining room includes seating for six. There is a modern kitchen with a stainless electric stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave oven and coffee-maker. The downstairs bedroom has a queen-sized bed. The bathroom has a bathtub and a washer and dryer. There is a screened porch out the back door, and a full open covered porch out front.
The second floor includes a full bathroom with a shower. The upstairs bedroom has a full-sized bed and twin bunks tucked into an alcove, and a 32" flat-screen television with DIRECTV and a DVD player.

We loved our time at the Dakota! The access to kayaks and canoes was a highlight! The covered back porch was lovely for evenings outside without bugs! Our dog enjoyed the big yard and the extra touches inside (bowls, couch covers and a toy!). All the kitchen items right there - you thought of everything (except a strainer). The location was perfect! Make sure to stop at Uncle Carl's Coffee shop across the street! Best coffee and chai!!!

The Dakota cabin was adorable and very clean. The bed in the downstairs bedroom was very uncomfortable to sleep on though. My girls absolutely loved the bunk beds! I wish it was a little more private. I didn’t realize how close the other cabin was, so I was always telling the kids to be quiet when we were on the porch early in the morning. Also, everything is far away, there wasn’t much to do that wasn’t a far drive, or that we would have to leave the dogs alone for an all day trip. I should have done a little more research on the location before booking. But all in all it was a good trip.

Enjoyed a very lovely 3 day girl's weekend here with my mother. The cabin is very cozy and nicely furnished in addition to being clean and well kept. Host was responsive and welcoming. We will likely look to stay here again for our next long weekend escape.

Our family of five plus our pup stayed at the Dakota for a little getaway weekend for my husbands birthday. The cabin was even nicer in person than in the photos, very clean and very well appointed with everything you could need. My 3 boys loved the bunk room which was perfect for them, and there was even a dog bed and bowels for our four legged girl. The one and only thing that I could say is that both my husband and I found the downstairs bed to be a bit uncomfortable.
It was still a bit too cold to take advantage of the canoes or kayaks, but we did make a cozy fire in the fire pit after going on some nearby hikes.
The kitchen had everything I needed to make dinner our first there. Well stocked with any type of pot/pan, utensils you could need. Our second day we had taken the quick ride to Northville to check out the cute town. We stopped at the school so our boys could play on the large playground and then had dinner at the Alpine Grill on the way back to the cabin. We had a nice meal with many choices for everyone.
We had a lovely relaxing weekend and all agree we want to go back when the weather is warmer to take advantage of all the cabin and area has to offer.

Beautiful cabin in quiet area. Was looking to snowmobile but mother nature didnt corroborate. Ended up snowshoeing to mountains, moxham and casacde. Had a fun night in speculator for the anual burning of the Christmas trees. Would definitely come back it i get a chance. Thanks again

We loved our stay at the Dakota. It snowed unexpectedly on our second day and as soon as it stopped, we were delighted that the owner had the entire driveway plowed for us! The kitchen is especially well furnished and we had everything that we needed for a lovely weekend away!

Communication with host was great. John was very responsive.
The cabin was easy to find. Parking is open and spacious. It’s super cute! Decorated nicely. We loved the fire pit out back as well as the enclosed porch. Interior was roomy, perfect for 2-4 adults.
Both my husband and I thought the mattress and couch weren’t super comfortable. The shower tub was also pretty small.

The stay was great, we hiked all day and used the cabin for sleep and fires at night! Our two dogs loved the cabin and the toys that were left for them. I thought the dock was honestly closer than described and that our dogs would have decent access to swim but did not! It was also very close to another cabin which had 3 large dogs which was very hard with limited privacy due to lattice fencing! But overall since we did not stay all day at the cabin it was great!

Excellent stay at a beautiful location. Super clean with every amenity. Thanks to the property owner John for his communication before we arrived. Very smooth. Hope to be back very soon!

We’ve stayed at this property several times and it doesn’t disappoint. The owners are very easy to work with and provide a digital guidebook that’s really helpful for planning your stay & the check-in / check-out process. The house is in Wells but you’re only a short drive to Speculator or Northville that have good restaurants & shopping. We went for a weekend in September so the weather was starting to dip and was cloudy for most of the weekend, but there’s still plenty to do. Or if you choose to close by, then the house is a short walk from the lake and you can kayak or find a hiking trail that’s only minutes driving distance from the house. We absolutely love it up here and will stay again.

Very impressive stay. Love John. We recently had to put our little girl pug down and he was more then accommodating with us. Also showed so much empathy. Will definitely make our way back once we get a new furry family member.

We were so happy to see how beautiful the Dakota was. Very clean and updated. Had everything we needed and was dog friendly.
The only thing we were disappointed in was we thought the water and kayaks were closer as my husband was planning on fishing from there. The picture online looked like there was water closer, or so it seemed.
Otherwise, we were very happy with your property.
Thank you!

Our family had a wonderful visit. This was our second year staying with this host. The cabin and the location had everything that we were looking for. We were able to kayak and hike everyday. The cabin is incredibly clean and well stocked. We will definitely return!

Enjoyed staying at the Dakota for a few days of hiking and kayaking. The house is well kept and all the instructions very clear; making it an easy stay. We paddled the river and the lake, tooling around to watch turtles and birds and a pair of loons. Auger falls nearby is a nice hike and there are many other trails within a reasonable drive. panther mountain a climb, but view well worth the effort. If you are into art, there is an amazing artist in wells who provides tours of his indoor and outdoor galleries with an appointment - John Van Alstine. Very nice stay!

We booked this VRBO as a last minute to visit my daughter at a local camp. The cabin was perfect, clean, and had everything that we needed. The check in/check out process was flawless. We would absolutely come back. Thank you to John and Crystal, the owners. Thank you for allowing us to bring our dog too!

This house was so homey, cozy, and comfortable! It was the perfect getaway for my family. The dogs loved it and so did we! The owner was super attentive and even got presents for our pups! Such a great time. I hope to go back one day!

John was very helpful and communicated with us in a timely manner. The cabin was clean, had everything we needed in the kitchen, and had plenty of extra towels, blankets, etc. The guestbook made it very easy to navigate where things were on the property and made check in and check out very smooth. We got out and about and hiked in the area. Then made our Thanksgiving dinner in the cabin. We had a rainy day where we stayed in watching Netflix and playing games (provided by the host) which was fine by us because the cabin is so cute and cozy. Bonus, we got to bring our dog with us. And John and Crystal even left a new toy out for her to play with! We had a wonderful stay.

On behalf of Carole N. and Lee K. September 2022 stay: Concluding our stay at the Yogi in Wells, NY we found only one problem; where to end the praise! It would not be with the comfortable and matching Adirondack furnishings throughout the porch and all nine interior areas. It wouldn't be with the bright and clean pine walls nor would it be with the matching high quality kitchenware. It would not end with the lovely room layout either. The full host of new appliances with matching marble countertops in each full bath as well as the beautiful kitchen only prolong the praise. Laminate floors, quality windows, climate control, screened deck, Adirondack art, and entertainment center inspire yet more praise. The adjacent outfitted shed is generously equipped with all manner of high quality supplies spanning the seasons of Adirondack enjoyment. The back yard leads to a nice selection of six kayaks and two canoes with secluded access to beautiful Lake Algonquin. The praise however, continues as we experienced last minute travel disruptions that would have ruined our vacation...ordinarily. But John Ponticello is no ordinary host. Thank you for your patience and gracious accommodations.

Great house, clean, well stocked kitchen, lots of games, Netflix, beautiful views, fire pit, screened in porch, and ample parking. This cozy house had it all. The host was wonderful at communicating and offered dining suggestions and had a great "things to do" book. Highly recommend staying at this cabin.

I was extremely impressed with my stay! This house was very clean, adorable and I could tell that the owners took great pride in making the guests feel comfortable and at home. Little details showed me how much they care. I even recommended this property to my Aunt and her family will be most likely be booking in November, if available. I truly recommend this cute little rental to anyone. I stayed with my husband, children and dogs. Grateful for the memories :)

My family and I had a wonderful time staying at the Dakota! John and Crystal thought of everything and we felt right at home. Their digital guidebook was a great way to plan our trip. The cabin was spotless and has a fully stocked kitchen which made cooking during our stay a breeze. We loved the games and our black lab loved the toy the they purchased for him. It was so easy to communicate with John, from booking our stay to having him answer any questions we may have had. We can't wait to come back again!

What a fabulous place to stay! From the check in process to leaving, it is a five star place! Chatted with John via text and was super pleased. Besides being a beautiful place to stay, it’s centrally located to a lot of the Adirondacks, from the Balloon Festival in Glens Falls to Blue Mountain in the Northwest! We didn’t even get a chance to ride to Lake Placid! The in depth guide of the house and places to eat or go was exceptionally done! Maybe next year, yup we have already booked it! You won’t be disappointed staying here or even next door at the Yogi! Thanks again for a grand time.

ADK getaway with family members
First the pros: John is amazing at communication. All the amenities are brand, spanking new, right down to the fancy bbq utensils! The cabin is well-equipped and very clean. It‘s wonderful to have the canoe and kayaks available at no additional cost, with life jackets and paddles, and everything you need to enjoy time out on the water. It‘s greatly appreciated that linens and (beautiful, new) towels are included.
Helpful tips: there are two cabins next to each other - sufficiently distanced but it would be helpful to have a photo showing the two together so you can evaluate desired level of privacy. The people renting the other cabin were great. The two cabins would be great for two families or larger groups of friends to rent both. Other than salt and pepper, you‘ll need to bring other basics, like cooking oil.
We enjoyed our stay very much. Thank you, John!
