History of Castle on the grounds of Stormont House: Built on a rocky outcrop overlooking a bend in the river the castle was much prized for its strategic location. The all-powerful O’Briens of Thomond laid claim to the place and took up residence there for a few centuries.
During the sieges of Limerick in 1690/91 it drew the attention of William of Orange and his lieutenant-general, Godert de Ginkel. The ‘grim Dutch gunner’ trained his ordnance on the castle destroying it. The ruins are just inside the gate of Stormont while behind the house is an area of old woodland.

The house was lovely, clean, well furnished (in a way that makes you feel like you’re visiting somewhere special), and spacious. We loved waking up in the morning to the spectacular views and returning home after sight seeing to a company friendly kitchen and comfortable living room. The hosts who passed off the keys were an added treat: gave us the inside scoop to get away from more touristy attractions to more local ones, and made us feel like we were friends.
