The location was very convenient, and in a truly beautiful spot.
The convent is a clean and beautiful place. The view from my room to the courtyard was very pretty, and the breakfast was good. The last day, two ladies even brought my breakfast to my room without me even asking- I thought that a very thoughtful gesture.
The staff were all lovely, with only one exception- the manager, who I believe, owns the place. I am disabled, and overheard her making a joke about me and disabled people to her staff, which, in addition to being completely non professional, put a real damper on the entire stay.
I asked to meet with her for a few minutes ( I was going to dicuss this)and she agreed .
She never showed.I waited 2 hours.
Other than the discriminitory behavior of the manager, the stay was very nearly
perfect.

This place could easily be a 5-star hotel but they are in serious need of investing in equipment.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of A/C in the rooms, we were very uncomfortable during our 3-night stay.
On top of that, a smell of mold welcomed us inside their so-called closet due to the lack of ventilation.
Finally total lack of furniture to properly store our clothes (only hangers) which made our room very messy quickly.

Going into our stay, we knew this would be a unique experience and it did not disappoint! Convento de Sao Francisco is surely one of a kind.
The parking was a bit limited but not a problem for us. It feels like you are entering a castle when coming through the large front entrance. At first we were a bit unsure where to go, but the young girl at the front desk welcomed us warmly and gave us a brief tour.
The room itself was incredibly spacious and you feel like you're saying in a castle. So if you are looking for a traditionally cozy, finished hotel this is certainly not for you.
The bed was large and comfortable, as well as the bedding and pillows. Our room had a view into town (the park next door) as well as into the back garden.
The shower was a bit awkwardly set up, but the water was warm and comfortable. The stone of the bathroom vanity was also very classy but fit the style of the hotel.
While I found a cockroach the first morning of our stay, again I feel this comes with the territory of essentially being in a semi-outdoor environment and is NOT a complaint. Similarly, you may want to bring ear plugs here, as it seemed every footstep from upstairs could be heard, as well as neighboring showers (oddly at 4am on consecutive nights...).
The breakfast did not have any meat, but was very, very classy and tasty. The cheeses, fruits, juices, and breads were all delicious. We would definitely stay here, and wander the halls of a "castle" again!

The pool was not well cared for - water was murky - one day the cleaning robot was left in the all day and generally there was white fluffy stuff swimming in the water like mold/algae

We had the most wonderful stay at Convento
de Sao Francisco. Staying in the property is an amazing experience. Our room was very comfortable and nicely furnished and the bed had lovely linens. The convent property has so much atmosphere and is furnished with beautiful period pieces as well as comfortable couches. As it was January we did not use the pool or garden but they looked very nice. The breakfast was very hearty and very good. We had local fruit, yogurt, cheese, eggs, cereal. Everything was fresh and really tasty. Waking up to eat pineapple and bananas from the garden is a great experience!
The hotel hosts, Jose and Manuela, were so helpful and kind and gave us good directions.
We visited in January so the town was quiet but I would like to come back to see the marina, beach and town squares in the warmer temperatures! The town is very convenient to the main city, the airport, and other tourist sites. We loved our stay in this unique and comfortable hotel. Thank you!

What a wonderful retreat! We absolutely loved the setting, the antique building, the tall ceilings, the incredible breakfasts. A truly unique stay. Of special note, the owner was of special assistance to us when I needed to see a local doctor. And they accommodated an early breakfast for us when we needed to fly out early on our last day. Highly recommended

Wonderful experience. The owners and staff were extremely welcoming. They made us feel like it was our home. The rooms & property are beautiful with lots of nooks and crannies to explore, and sit and read or chat. The pool & garden are nice to relax in, and the hotel has Wonderful views of the Ocean and Islands. Breakfast was very fresh, delicious, and healthy. I would recommend building in time in your schedule to relax on the hotel grounds, it is well worth it! We definitely plan to return and stay longer.

The hotel was amazing. We stayed all over the island of Sao Miguel on our trip and this was by far our favorite place to stay. It's beautiful and the owner is so sweet. The photos don't do this place justice it was beautiful. They grow their own pineapples and serve them with breakfast along with cheeses and eggs.
