About this cottage rental
Step back in time to a more leisurely age and holiday in a historic Rangitoto bach. Book to stay overnight on Auckland’s iconic volcanic island.
Bach 78 is located at Islington Bay near the Islington Bay wharf, and Motutapu Island. The bach is a 1 and a ½ hour walk from Rangitoto Wharf or a 2 and a ½ hour kayak from Auckland.
Since the 1920s the baches on Rangitoto have been available to only a few lucky families but now you can join them. Bach 78 has been lovingly restored with the addition of modern bedding, cooking and toilet facilities. Supplied in the kitchen to use are utensils, pots, pans and a 12 volt chilly bin to keep your food cool.
Bach 78 is located directly opposite the Islington Bay Wharf on Rangitoto Island. It has 2 bedrooms, gas cooker, BBQ, solar powered lights and a chemical toilet.
There is a network of well-defined walking tracks giving access to the volcanic features of Rangitoto and the native bush restoration and archaeological sites on Motutapu. The views from the summit of Rangitoto is a must do feature of time spent on the island. Both islands are pest free and you will see native birds and other native wildlife often absent on the mainland.
While the rocky shoreline of Rangitoto can make swimming difficult the sandy beaches of Motutapu are just a short walk away.

We had two nights in the batch during July, I didn't notice the no heating aspect of the listing but it wasn't too bad in the end. Mugs of milo and warm clothes, plus the hot water bottles supplied, stashed inside our sleeping bags for bedtime and it was completely ok. Such a great spot so close to auckland but you really feel like you have gotten away and out of Auckland.

This is a truly special place, steeped in natural and human history. Amazing plant life, stunning bird life and fun fishing.
Entering this house is like stepping back into a simpler, quieter time, but there is still everything you need.
Quincy is the consummate host, communicative, friendly and chill.
Thanks so much for sharing this piece of Aotearoa old world goodness with us.

Great access to Rangitoto and Motutapu and loved the feeling of being ‘back in time’. Very clean and great hospitality from Steph and Quincy.

A wonderful overnight stay at bach 78. Fantastic location, we were incredibly lucky with the weather, fish jumping outside the house, swimming off the wharf in May, stargazing at night and a great short hike there and back from the ferry - magic!!

We loved staying here! It really is a gem of a place and such a wonderful opportunity to experience. Steph and Quincy were so kind in showing us around. Of course it is rustic, but if you are expecting that then you’ll have a great time. A rare treat

Had a lovely two nights stay. Communication was great, welcomed on arrival and loved every bit of the vintage bach! So much for the kids to explore and do .
Just needs a few more forks 😊

We had such an incredible time staying at this bach. The location is nice and quiet, close to a fantastic snorkel spot, Motutapu island, and the beautiful coastal track. I would have spent a whole week there if I could! Quincy and Stephanie were fantastic, lovely, and helpful hosts. One of the coolest places I've ever stayed.

Loved our stay here - such a beautiful place. Hope to stay again in the future.
(For those with young children be aware that the upper bunks don't have rails.)

The history and remote location is what makes this stay most special. Set in picturesque Islington Bay, once the tourists go for the day you literally have the bay all to yourself. Star gazing, board games, camp dinners and general chill time is what this is all about after a big day exploring the island. Photos are as listed. Be aware if you have small kids you need to go across the bay to use the public toilets.

Wonderful, friendly hosts, beautifully decorated (like the best bits of your grandma’s house), incredible location. We loved the peace of being on the island once all the day trippers had gone home. So special. Kayaking around the bay was lots of fun. Loved it completely and hope to be back for longer next time ❤️ Thanks Q & S

Spent an overnight on Rangitoto in historic Bach 78. Only regret is we only spent one night! So much to see and do. The bach itself was very nice and provided a unique experience. It’s beautifully situated on Islington Bay directly across from the wharf, allowing for a view of the sunrise right outside your door. Kayaks were available for use, as well, although we didn’t have enough time to use them. Our host, Steph, was very nice, helpful, and informative. She ran us through all the quirks of the bach and provided us with some history of the islands and suggestions on places to visit on the island that matched our interests. She also had pre boiled a pot of drinking water for us. I really can’t say enough nice things about the bach, Steph, or the islands themselves!

The heritage listed baches on rangitoto are a unique accommodation to get away from the city without going to far.
The bach looks authentically restored with a few added amenities (fridge, phone charging and electric lighting) and kayaks to go exploring in.
The places is very tidy and nice to stay in with a little outdoor area to eat and play games. By the nature of it, it's obviously not a high end new build but if you are after a bit of tramping with a decent place to stay the night, this is a great choice!

Had a wonderful weekend with family at Bach 78. Perfect spot for relaxation, birdlife, sea swimming, great base for walking - it’s worthwhile getting up early to enjoy the sunrise from Motutapu, and it’s just as magical to take it easy.

This is a very special cottage; one of just a few baches that dotted the Rangitoto coastline in the 1930s. A perfect trip back in time; not at all far from Auckland. Recommended 100%.

Loved our time on Rangitoto island! Communication for check in/check out was excellent. The bach was a wonderful escape and glimpse for the children to a time without internet. Highly recommended.

Beautiful little spot for a few nights to get off the grid and relax. The historical Bach has everything you need for comfort and a stunning location on the water front. Lots of great walks and scenery and history. Highly recommend. The hosts are so welcoming and accomodating, thanks for the amazing stay

We had the most amazing time staying at Bach 78. The place is so well preserved and original and as soon as you arrive it feels like you have entered paradise. Our 11 and 7 year old sons loved kayaking and exploring the island. It was the most relaxing holiday we have ever had. Quincy & Steph are super helpful and great to deal with.

As expected and enough info provided to plan what we needed to take with us. Thanks!

This is a beautiful property - like taking a step back in time, in the best possible way. We loved the access to the water and it was fantastic to be able to use sea kayaks straight off the ramp. We were able to anchor our small boat just off the wharf and right in front of the bach also. The cooking and shower is primitive but manageable and part of the charm of staying at a property like this. Rock shoes were the best investment for the kids. Thanks to our great hosts who made sure we had everything we needed.

Step back in time and enjoy how it would have been in a 1940s bach…. Although there is a fridge… enjoy a swim and wharf jump and the sounds of the sea. Great night away with a 3 hour costal walk back to the ferry for family.

Untouched paradise. Great for the soul. Beautiful, peaceful outlook. Watched the rays and fish in the bay, listening to birdsong. Quincy & Steph are wonderful to deal with. Definitely recommend a visit.

We could not have loved our stay more. The batch is gorgeous, so cute and it was sparkling clean. Our hosts were lovely, and really helpful when we needed it. The bay is absolutely beautiful, using the kayaks was a highlight too. Only regret is that we didn't book more nights!

We loved our stay at the Bach on Rangitoto. The cabin was so cute, the location felt really remote and special despite being so close to home (Auckland) and the walks around the island and beaches on Motutapu made for an amazing trip. Thanks to Quincy and Steph for a great stay!

we were very tired when we arrived after minding 3 wee grandaughters for w few days. We walked into the cottage in grey weather and the sanctuary of the old style comfort was perfect.
So many memories of past holidays although we had never stayed here before.
Thank you to the island team of Qunicy and Steph for their input. We had a wonderful time exploring, reading, watching the water and birds and even the very wet walk out along the shorleline track was a positive.
Thank you to those who are maintinaing these cottages and making them available.
