The room was REALLY hot, and the only form of AC was this tiny manual one that just blew lukewarm air so that wasn’t fun. The shower drain also didn’t drain and after a 5 minute shower, all of the water was flooding over, but I mentioned this to Andre and he said he’d fix it. Plus I was only there for one night so it wasn’t a big deal.
Here’s where my very poor rating comes from:
Upon arrival, I asked if it was ok if I paid for the room on departure and they said it was ok. I wanted to check out this waterfall about 20 min by car from the lodge, and then go straight to the airport after. Since there were no Ubers around the area (it’s pretty isolated) Andre offered to drive me to the waterfall and then come back and pick me up and take me to the airport. I thought this was such a kind gesture since he did not say anything about it costing money. I probably should have known, but we had all good chats and got to know each other so I thought he was just offering. I packed up all my things and headed to the living room to pay when Andre said they ONLY accept cash. I had been paying with card my whole trip and only had like $7 in colones so I told him I would need to go to an ATM. He drove me there, and my card kept getting rejected most likely due to me being in another country. I told him this and asked if he had Venmo or PayPal or Zelle or anything to do a bank transfer. He said no, but my flight was soon so we continued to drive to the airport. He then asked his sister if she had PayPal and she said yes, so I thought ok perfect I’ll just PayPal her. I didn’t have any wifi to get a connection to PayPal and so Andre used his hotspot from his phone but my app continuously said it couldn’t log in. Only then did he tell me that the full amount was going to be 100 dollars. My room was only $42 so I was confused about that price and then he said he was charging me for the ride. I thought that it was so sneaky for him to spring that on me on the way to (continued)
the airport without disclosing that the ride would be over 60 dollars. I would have just taken a bus or something if I would have known that. So anyway, I ask for his sisters info, give him mine and tell him I’ll pay her when I get back into service. I got home and still for whatever reason can’t log into my PayPal without an error message. From the time I’ve been home till now which has been maybe under two weeks, Him and his sister and friends have persisted to message and call me on WhatsApp, try and add my personal Instagram account, and email and threaten me saying that he’s going to “expose” me on social media if I don’t pay him. I literally had to block him and so many of his people that have been trying to reach out to me. I told his sister on WhatsApp that I can’t log into PayPal and since they have no other way to receive money I’m trying to figure out a way to pay them but she doesn’t seem to understand and they continue to harass me. It honestly is pretty shocking and invasive. Be warned about this owner. Plus it’s overpriced for what you get.

Charming family run place that is a combination of hotel, hostal and campground.
The place is clean and well kept with cozy common areas.
Great location with easy access to the rivers.
Filling and tasty breakfast.
Few options for food in town. None of them particularly good or cheap.
Breakfast at the lodge wasn't cheap either.
Better cooking facilities at the lodge would be great.

I'm a budget solo traveler and the value for the money is excellent (I was given a large room for the same price as a smaller one and was pleasantly surprised by the size and amenities). The room was quite clean although it's always difficult to keep floors clean in dry season here because of wind and dust. Bugs weren't an issue (insects are part of everyday life here, so if you're squeamish don't visit CR!). The property has nice communal spaces as well. There's a beautiful river nearby to swim in and I highly recommend the La Leona waterfall tour! Lastly, the owner was really nice and very helpful.
The fridge needed a good cleaning and there were only extremely bright ceiling lights. But I knew this from other reviews so I brought a portable light (I love my Luminaid!).

The unit we rented was with a nice private terrace. The owner is very nice.
No AC. Some crawlers in unit, lizards etc. It's in nature so I guess it's normal. Room is very basic, not all types of plates are available in four.

Beautiful place.

This place is right across the street from tours departure point to La Leona Waterfall and canyoning . There are three Soda's affordable restaurants from walking distance from the lodge.
Also there is a beautiful refreshing stream called Poza la Pipa where you can swim and its free. And finally you are 20 minutes away by car to the Rincon de la Vieja National Park where you can do an easy hike to see mud pots and fumeroles.
The only thing i would strongly recommend to the owner is to add air conditioning in the rooms , even though there were fans it wasnt enough for this time of year which was end of March.

I enjoyed my stay! It's a nice property with a beautiful garden, in a great location to explore what the area has to offer. The owners are really great, very helpful and friendly, can help you organise tours etc. The room is simple but enough for a few nights.
The mattress of the double bed is not in a good condition, very soft and falling through. I slept on a small bed, it was better.

The bed was oké, not as hard as the most beds in Costa Rica we had in five weeks.
The hotel is opposite the La Leona waterfall, also other things are near by like the Rincon Vulcano park.
Expensive for what it is, the room looks very boring, had a bad smell/air and the wall was very dirty with a lot of stains on it. There we are lot of ants in the room, normally I don't care but these were also in our bed and got bitten several times. We just stayed one night because we arrived late.
The hosts don't speak english and didnt share any information about trips or tours. When we arrived after a five hour drive we didn't got a warm welcome but it's was directly about what we need to pay.. maybe because they don't sprak english but we didn't feel very welcome. The son (i think) is very friendly.

Location is excellent, across the street from a delicious soda and close proximity to Rincon de la vieja National Park, waterfalls, and blue pools / rivers. Owners are nice and it was clean.
In April gets really hot and lack of AC was apparent at times. In my room specifically there were no windows except one to the common area which I had to keep covered as there were other guests. At night, I felt that the florescent light inside the room was dark and insufficient.
3.0 / 5.0
Nice covered patio with big shared fridge and tables.
We got some local tips from the owner. Good cheap soda right cross the street.
So many ants and other insect in the room which made it very uncomfortable at the end.
It was super hot in the room.
No lamp beside the bed.
