About this cottage rental
forestmillholidaycottages co uk
This charming one bedroomed Victorian stone cottage is ideal for anyone seeking a relaxing break exploring the town and its local eating houses, cafes or for those seeking a more active time using it as a base to explore the mountains and rivers.
Ty Bychan (little house) has recently been upgraded to a high standard. The sitting room has a fab wood burning stove for those cosy nights in (a basket of wood is provided during the colder months).
Upstairs is a lovely bedroom with rustic furniture and a luxurious king size bed, and a shower room.
Outside there is a small courtyard where walking boots and wet weather gear can be stored. This area gains access via very steep, narrow steps to a shared pathway leading to the small garden with seating and BBQ. PLEASE NOTE: the description of the narrow step steps and ensure you are happy you can navigate them before booking the cottage.
Ty Bychan is “in” Hay on Wye and has many amenities including independent shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs and of course the plethora of book shops to enjoy. As the cottage enjoys a central location in Hay there will be traffic noise heard usually daytime during the week, if you require a fantastically rural cottage with total peace and quiet we have another cottage a converted mill available to view at forestmillholidaycottages.
The surrounding countryside boasts an area of outstanding beauty within the Brecon Beacons National Park offering many outdoor activity opportunities such as canoeing on the River Wye, cycling on the tracks and lanes, mountain biking and walking in the Black mountains and the Brecon Beacons.
Whatever you chose; whether adrenelin fueled or relaxing Ty Bychan will provide you with a warm comfortable environment in which to enjoy stay.
We are dog friendly but due to the size of the cottage, one large dog or two small dogs are preferred, but please do discuss other options with us.

A lovely cosy cottage with great facilities - just what we needed for a short break. Great location within easy walk of all that Hay on Wye has to offer - independent shops and cafes, pubs and restaurants. Easy to walk out and explore too without using the car if you don't want to. We'll be back!!

Hay -on-Wye is a great place to visit, and Ty Bychan is well located. The property is lovely - loads of character, but with the mod cons. The shower is outstanding. A couple disappointments: 1. were informed shortly before arrival that WiFi would not be available after all 2. this is likely a time of year thing, but there were tractor trailers loaded with harvest thundering by several times an hour.

Our stay at Ty Bychan 15 Swan Bank Hay-on-WyeJune 2022
The property is very well equipped, cosy, lovely and clean, and welcoming. It is perfectly located, with only a very short walk into Hay for shops, pubs, restaurants, etc, and just a 5-10 minute drive to the Warren, or to Glasbury, to go swimming, sunbathing, and have a picnic. At Glasbury you can also take a leisurely 5 mile canoe ride (apprx 2 1/2 hours) back to Hay (even if you have never canoed before) and we would highly recommend the canoe trip, it will be a fantastic and memorable experience for everyone, for sure . We had the most wonderful, relaxing holiday experience at Ty Bychan Hay-on-Wye.
Kind regards
Mark, Sonia, and Buddy (our cocker spaniel)

Happiness lies behind the Red Door!
We've visited Hay on Wye many times now and have always loved passing the 'little cottage with the red door' and wondering what it was like inside! Well, now we know - and we weren't disappointed. A beautiful, impeccably clean and welcoming home from home, that is deceptively spacious inside. We were there on a rainy, cold November weekend & it was a real haven after a day walking and making the most of all that this lovely little town has to offer. The hosts, Mary & Jo, were great at communicating and very flexible and accommodating wherever possible. The heating was efficient (there's a woodburning stove in the front room too, with logs provided, but we didn't use it) and the water was lovely and hot. Beautiful big bathroom and - this has been mentioned by other visitors, but it's true! - the most comfortable bed we've ever slept in! Wonderful pillows too - it really made all the difference to our stay, because we so needed to relax and have a really good sleep. Lovely touch of milk in the fridge and welsh cakes and local jam to welcome us. Our little dog loved having her bed in front of one of the big radiators and because the downstairs is fully tiled, we didn't have to worry too much about possible muddy paw prints! As stated, there is free parking in the community & sports centre a short walk away and it was no problem to walk our bags round on a sunny morning. The lovely town of Hay has so much to offer (even out of the festival season) - special walks along the beautiful River Wye and, of course, the bookshops, but also other independent shops and art galleries. Well worth a visit and, for a couple who wish to rest and explore, this is the perfect base from which to do so.

Perfect cottage, wonky guest!
The cottage is delightful, and hosts Mary and Jo very welcoming. Not quite perfect for me - not because of any fault of host or cottage, but because I have various ‘wonky’ bits and hadn’t realised how dependent I’ve become on several aids I’ve come to take for granted at home. (Mary and Jo are upfront on the site about the disability-unfriendly steep stairs - my problems are different, and they couldn’t have known, so no stars lost at all) — but spotless, well equipped, and beautifully situated - lovely! Thank you.

Lovely well-equipped small cottage
A great location just on the edge of Hay-on-Wye a very short walk from the Offas Dyke trail up to Hay Bluff and Hatterall Ridge, the river and Hay town centre. Not a cottage for anyone with reduced mobility - which the listing is very honest about. If there is anything negative to report it is the traffic noise from the road outside, otherwise perfect, we will be back!

This comfortably furnished & picturesque little cottage is a fantastic base for exploring Hay & the surrounding area. A choice of riverside walks, pubs ,restaurants and shops are right on the doorstep & there is free parking nearby. Perfect spot to stay - excellent location!
We were very pleased to have found this property to stay at while in Hay. It was very close to restaurants and the town core. We walked everywhere and even got in a hike to Hay Bluff, although the weather wasn't very co-operative. The property had everything we needed and was very convenient as we were able to make our own breakfast. We could have made all meals there as the kitchen was fully equipped, but we were on vacation!! The only thing that might have been better was to have wifi available, but there was a cafe with it and we took advantage of that.
All in all, a perfect little spot to hang our hats for a few days and the extra bonus was I found Cornishware to purchase in town.

Came compete with hedgehog!
Stayed here after a walking holiday and it was the most perfect oasis to laze in. Very friendly owners and a minute or two's walk from Hay's shops - also nearly right opposite a lovely little secret footpath to the church via an old well, and from the church down to the river. Even though it is what in Hay counts as a "main" road there was no noise problem. Great shower and the most comfortable bed I've ever come across. Also the most magical higgledy-piggledy garden with a very friendly robin - and on my last night as I sat reading in the evening, a hedgehog clambered out of the hedge to say hello. Just wonderful, thank you!

We loved it
Adele is an incredibly thoughtful host. The cottage was lovely and totally welcoming, down to a vase with beautifully arranged flowers. Spotless and comfortable, the cottage is within easy walking distance of all the shops. If you're there on Thursday, don't miss the market. The cottage and the town were an unforgettable experience.

Cozy, clean cottage with most amenities
Conveniently located, tidily outfitted, well thought out and clear communication. Basic accommodations, clean and cheerful. Narrow stairways, tiny fridge, tiny stove, nothing more than is needed for a short stay, but everything that is needed. Loved the tiny airtight wood stove. Hay is wonderful, and this cottage the perfect base to explore from.
