About this house rental
This apartment rents Saturday to Saturday.
Little Island House is a two story home in Bass Harbor, on the water, with two apartments, an Upstairs and a Downstairs apartment, which are totally separated.
One enters the Upstairs level by the outside stairway to the deck and sliding glass door. Step into the living room area, with a floor-to-ceiling granite fireplace and cathedral ceiling with skylight. Airy and light, it has large windows facing the harbor on three sides, a sofa and coffee table, ROKU TV, two armchairs by the fireplace.
The dining area follows, with an oval wooden table and four chairs, two corner lamps on small tables.
The kitchen, with tile counters and hardwood floor, is well supplied and has a great view of its own. You'll find everything you need for cooking (including a lobster pot), coffee, or wine. Four burner gas stove, fridge. Kitchen linens. Cleaning supplies under the sink.
A study area at the foot of the stairs to the bedroom is perfect for setting up your computer, writing, or 'working from home' (high speed Internet).
The third-floor bedroom, with skylight and window, has a queen-size bed, large closet, two dressers, and louvered windows that open up inside to the cathedral ceiling and stone chimney.
The bathroom/shower are around the corner from the kitchen.
The apartment sleeps two. It has central heat for the off season, excellent ventilation in summer, and all the firewood one would like. All linens (bed, bath, and kitchen) are included. Immaculately clean, lovely decor. No smoking, no pets.

Glad to be on 'the quiet side': Views are beautiful. Bass Harbor has been photographed for the cover of a National Geographic book about New England and has been the site of several movies. The lobster fishing boats are always interesting, and if you love wildlife, eagles soar over the harbor daily. We counted twelve herons in the low tide one September day and have watched loons, ducks, terns, and gulls work the harbor.
Although we're only thirty minutes from Bar Harbor, we are essentially very different. Bass Harbor is a small fishing village and working harbor on the southern end of Mount Desert Island. We're called 'The quiet side of the Island.' There's plenty to do here: The Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, Wonderland and Ship Harbor (part of Acadia National Park) are only a mile or two away. At Little Island Marine, the small boatyard which shares the peninsula with the house, Island Cruises makes nature trips Monday through Saturday, and charters private fishing or sailing trips. Restaurants are within easy walking distance.

The Little Island house has magnificent views of the harbor and inlet. The home is clean, the host have provided everything you would need for a stay. There is great communication with the hosts. Lastly, the town has lots of restaurants and shops and is not too far from Bar Harbor. There are many great hikes just minutes away and several ponds for paddle boarding/kayaking. There is something for everyone!!

When we walked in we were in awe of the view from all of the windows in the home. It was very clean and beautifully furnished. We were very close to Thurstons for delicious lobster. I would recommend this rental property to everyone.

This lovely upstairs cottage was super clean and had all the supplies possible needed for our stay. We enjoyed the water view during high tide. Certainly interesting to see how low the water level is during low tide twice a day, Very quiet on this side of the island. Close to a couple of beautiful trails and the Lighthouse. Easy to communicate with owner.

This property is located in a very quiet neighborhood with the best views of what makes Maine iconic - mountains, water, boats, fog, wildlife. It was simply a spot that was good for the soul. We were torn each day with exploring and hiking or sitting on the deck to enjoy the changing tides and the beautiful sunsets.
It was clean, so well stocked, and had hosts who were receptive to our questions. I honestly hate to share information on this little slice of Maine and keep it to ourselves, but share, I will! Make the reservation, and enjoy! Thank you for being a huge part of our ninth stay in Maine. We do love it there!

This was our first trip to Mt. Desert Island. We loved that the house was located right at the water's edge. It was very comfortable and we enjoyed watching the activity of the harbor. We also enjoyed a number of sensational sunsets from the deck. We would love to come back and stay longer next time as we felt we only scratched the surface of things to do in Acadia.

This was a really wonderful place to stay in all ways. It was on the quiet side of the island, which we loved. The views from the condo are spectacular, the place was very well cared for and well equipped and was such a comfortable place to be. The owner was really responsive and kind. We took a wonderful nature cruise that was family run by the owners kids and loved it! We had to leave a day early but will definitely try to return!

Perfect spot to appreciate MDI with a 270 degree view of Bass Harbor — which is a scenic working harbor on MDI. Everything was as promised and very responsive hosts. We will be back!

We couldn't believe this place when we arrived. It was absolutely spotless. So spotless, in fact, that you could eat off the floor! There wasn't a even a mark on the wall! The watercolor of the Little Island House hanging on the dining room wall was beautiful as well. And we couldn't have asked for a better view. Waking up each morning to the sunrise and enjoying the sunset at night was incredible! It was so quiet and serene even with a tourist attraction next door and neighbors below us! I would recommend this place to anyone. Charlene, you outdid yourself! We didn't want to leave but we hope to come back some day. David and Linda McLean

Quiet retreat with spectacular scenery
My husband and I loved our week here in Bass Harbor. The cottage was perfect and met our expectations ten fold. This property is of the nicest VBRO properties we have rented over the years! Being on the quiet side away from all the people and the touristy places was perfect for us! The sunsets views every evening were a bonus! Thanks Charlene for everything!

Peaceful perfection!
Husband and I were both delighted with this lovely place: easy communication with the hosts; wrap-around view of a quaint working harbor with mountains in one direction and islands and the sea at the other; beautifully furnished with a very well equipped kitchen; easy access to Acadia National Park if you can tear yourself away from this little gem! We can't wait to go back again.

Retirees scenic getaway
A lovely, well appointed space with world class views. Charlene was accessible, timely and helpful---obviously an experienced host. Great fun to watch the harbor activity. We had a wonderful time. Our friends rented the unit on the first floor and we hiked, visited a couple museums, Asticou Garden (azaleas in bloom!) and rode the ferry to Swan's Island.

This home was a perfect fit for us; my husband loves everything to do with boats and I love adventure and nature. Our mornings included drinking coffee and watching the lobster boats either on the spacious deck or through 270 degrees of picture windows! Then onto exploring the area. Acadia trails are only a few minutes away either to the ocean or deep glacial lakes. Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mountain were about 1/2 hour drive, so an ideal spot. Back to the house...the kitchen has everything you need, the fireplace added wonderful ambience at night, and the bed was quite comfortable. There's a large flat screen TV but we unplugged all week so didn't even use it! The bathroom was small but perfectly adequate but the trade off is large and open living space which to me was more important. And as advertised, the bedroom is upstairs and everything else is downstairs. The yard is inviting and Charlene definitely has a green thumb! She was prompt in answering all my questions. The check-in and check-out process was as easy as I've ever had.Overall, we can only say good about this home and Charlene as our host!

This was our 5th time staying at Little Island House! We love it! Even those inevitable chilly rainy days that creep up in Maine aren't onerous when you stay at LIH! Make a fire in the fireplace and cook up some home made clam chowder in the gorgeous kitchen, or take a nap in the loft bedroom...So beautiful looking out on Bass Harbor, watching the lobstermen bringing in their haul for the day! You can buy fresh lobster everyday at the wharf next door. The best part is being on the "quiet side" of the island and away from the hustle and bustle. And Kim and Charlene's son runs the "Nature Cruises" each day right off their dock! You can learn all about lobstering and life on the islands.

Great place on MDI‘s quiet side
This is a wonderful place to stay on the quiet side of the island. Right at the water, a working harbor on three sites, one gets to enjoy terrific sunsets from the deck. The Appartement is very clean and well-appointed with everything you might need during your stay; if you don’t mind the stairs that lead to the upper unit, and within the unit to the sleeping space, this is a great place to stay.

Charlene and her family have created a little island oasis. The home was immaculate and stocked with everything you would need . We definitely be coming back!!!!

Little island getaway
If you don’t mind being away from Bar Harbor this is a great place. Very clean and well stocked with everything you need. South harbor is just a short 5 min drive away for dinner or supplies. Bar harbor has a larger variety of places to eat which is about 20 min away, not an awful drive just not down the street. We ate a couple of times I’m South harbor but would recommend going to Bar Harbor for better food. Only place I would recommend that we ate at was Coda . Every where else we ate was sub par food compared to what you could have in Bar harbor for the same price.
But I would highly recommend staying here and doing the harbor tour that leaves right next door from the house. Eli does a great trip.

A gem on the quiet side of MDI
Clean, bright and well appointed, this place sparkles even when the fog rolls in. It's a very comfortable, quiet house with plenty of room inside and out on the deck. Charlene is warm and friendly and ready to answer any questions. It's worth the drive to Bass Harbor; bring your binos to watch the boat and bird activity out on the water.

Stunning Location; Great Hosts
The property is stunningly situated with up-close views on three sides of Bass Harbor; a busy working harbor. The spacious, modern interior is very well maintained and very nicely provisioned. There is a great fireplace well supplied with fire wood, kindling, paper and matches. Charlene is a warm and friendly host who has done a great job at providing everything one could want for a week at Mt. Desert Island.

The BEST VRBO of the many we've stayed in worldwide!
Where can you find a true picture of Maine
Through each pane of glass in the house?
It's the Home Away hide-away VRBO
So well-managed by Charlene Strauss!
You enter the home, it is gorgeous, well-stocked----
There's nothing about which to grouse!
You breathe in Bass Harbor's crisp air from the deck;
It is perfect, the Little Island House!
It's peaceful, relaxing, and stunning to boot,
Yet less than a half hour away
From Acadia's beauty and the Bar Harbor scene
Where that touristy stuff oft holds sway.
Now, Bass Harbor's found on the island's quiet side,
With aesthetic charm eliciting "WOW"s,
And the best place, in our view, to stay when you're there
Of course, is the Little Island House!
