Our family of 9 (6 seniors, myself, + 2 children) stayed at this lovely property. Plenty of rooms/beds to accommodate a large group. 1 bedroom is separate, a studio apartment adjacent. The house had everything you could need. Well stocked with bedding, kitchen items, appliances. Heating was on so we never felt cold. Garden to enjoy meals/sunsets. Quiet neighborhood. The hosts were easy to reach and friendly and also kind enough to bring us a welcome cake! Did not explore too much on foot. It's short drive to Matlock and Matlock bath. We enjoyed the area and found it safe and relaxing.
Only access to the kitchen/dining area/garden are down spiral stairs. I underestimated how much of an issue this was for the elder folks, who felt the stairs were daunting/dangerous. If you have children or elder folks you may want to consider another property.
That there was a hiccup with VRBO where they never sent me any sort of reminder about the second payment. I made the initial booking, paid the deposit, then days before our stay (months after booking) I was sent emails from VRBO with check-in and property info. I thought we were set. The owner came one morning while I was asleep, demanded to speak to me immediately and was quite irate that the second payment hadn't been made. I was unaware since I'd never received any email. The host initiated a request for 2nd payment. I got the message and sent payment then and there. Could have been addressed in a calm, friendly manner instead, IMO.

Very helpful owner who brought us cake! The property has everything you need for a group of friends, with 9-10 separate beds. Downside is it is bit cramped - particularly the kitchen and the narrow spiral staircase. But for the price it's great and we'll probably go again.

The Old Mill was a great place to celebrate a birthday with plenty of space for the 3 generations of our family. Imelda's cake was a bonus!

Nice house but a very tired garden also the stairs to the kitchen are shocking & unsafe for young kiddies to walk down also the older generation as very steep very tight very poor design but a nice location but I’d certainly change the stairs as we wouldn’t return purely for that factor

We rented the property for a reunion of 8 women friends over 60 as it provided enough bed space to spread out. It was ideal and we had plenty of laughs going up and down the spiral staircase, some of us with creaking joints! The owners were very helpful and we enjoyed Imelda's chocolate cake. Only thing missing was a folder of instructions for the use of the equipment and numbers such as local doctors etc, and we'd have liked a visitors book to write in.

Excellent location we could begin our walks directly from the property. Everyone commented that the beds were very comfortable and the lounge had plenty of sofas enough for everyone.
The stairs to the kitchen and dining room were a bit steep for some of the older members of our party, but the dinning area was spacious for us to eat in. Good value for money and would recommend.

June family holiday from USA
All 10 of us had a lovely holiday (5 adults and 5 children.) Beautiful setting, gorgeous views and countryside. Local butchers and post office. We were lucky to be there for the village carnival, so much fun, just like stepping back in time. Terence and Imelda were great hosts, Imelda baked 2 delicious chocolate cakes for us during our stay. Lots of room for us all, My husband and I stayed in the cottage which was comfortable.

Family holiday - three generations
The main property is on three levels with a spiral staircase between the bottom floor and the middle floor and a more conventional staircase to the bedroom on the upper floor. The lounge is on the middle floor and the kitchen and dining room on the bottom floor. This did not cause our group of 5 adults, aged between 35 and 67 years, and 5 children aged 7 to 10 years. I think the children enjoyed the novelty.
The place is very well equiped with cutlery, crockery, kitchen utensils and pots and pans. The big dining table could seat 10 comfortably and there was also a small table for 2 or 3.
The cottage, which sleeps 2, is completely separate, also well equiped, and the entrance is not in the same courtyard but is 20 metres up the road from the main gate. This splits the family up but meant that the oldest member could have some peace and quiet.

Spacious property in Holloway
This is a great place to stay with lovely walks in the valley along the canal and past all kinds of industrial heritage, old mills etc. Much more is in easy reach by car. The property itself has a quirky layout which makes it feels even larger than it is - and means big groups can comfortably enjoy the space without feeling crowded. Great value too.

Base camp
Very interesting and quirky house. Great views over the valley and would be a lovely spot for walking from. We visited for a family wedding where we needed space for a large group. We were out most of the time, hosts couldn’t do enough for us and also baked a delicious cake on arrival. The spiral staircase is narrow and quite steep. My only criticism would be that the house was cold when we arrived and didn’t really warm up until the following day. I suspect it had been unoccupied for a while with the heating being off/low prior to our booking.

Great for friends and family get togethers.
I stayed with 8 of my friends to celebrate a belated 50th birthday delayed due to the pandemic.
We had everything we needed to enjoy a weekend with friends going on a local walk using the local pub very friendly and just relaxing in the peaceful countryside. Would also like to say a big thank you to the owners whom had baked us a beautiful chocolate cake very much appreciated.

well positioned property
Property worked well for us with 4 different households, one of which had a baby and a toddler, so downstairs rooms very useful. Also cottage was seperate. Spiral stairs were a little challenging especially taking children down. Overall we really enjoyed our stay. Good location and handy shop close by. Very good pub in next village

Well equipped spacious property.
Lovely to all be together again. Very well equipped. Parking a bit difficult as large family coming from different areas so 4 cars.

Perfect place for a non-beach holiday!
The Old Mill was the perfect size for 14 of us (grandparents, two families, unmarried daughter and boyfriend). The facilities and equipment are ample and generous. The lounge is a lovely room for everyone to come together. There are flowers everywhere outside the property, which is attractively built in local stone, and apparently goes back to 1790. The one tricky feature is the original mill spiral staircase, but you soon get used to it. There's a lot of history locally - I hadn't realized that Florence Nightingale's home was literally opposite the end of our road; and the Arkwright miles are just a couple of miles away - but you're close to lots of key attractions, which the green, lush Derbyshire countryside hides away in the background very effectively. All of us, from 3 years old to 73, had a brilliant time, and the care and pride of the owners in their property contributed significantly to that. (As did the homemade chocolate cake which they presented us with...!)

Stunning location and building.
Great host, strange bed arrangement but with the cottage also available the 10 of us were very comfortable.

Lovely place, full of character and home comforts
We had a great time at The Old Mill and Cottage. Terrence and Imelda were lovely hosts, they even baked us a welcome cake. The place itself was nice and clean and had everything you would need for a comfortable stay.
Great local walks and not far from Matlock Baths.

Great house, perfect for family get together
I'd never been to Matlock before. It's a great place, steeped in history and lush natural landscaping.
Terence is a great host, gave good information about the area and once we'd checked in, he left us to it. Although he was very friendly and approachable, so if we did need anything I'm sure he would have been happy to assist.
The property is ideally located and quirky in a good way, being an old mill. Well suited to young families and older parties alike. It was easy to make cosy in the evenings.
I would definitely recommend and might even be back for another visit, as still plenty to explore around the area.
Cheers Terence and Imelda!

Beautiful house in a beautiful location, the house and cottage were very well equipped, there was nothing we couldn’t find that we needed 😃 the owners were very good, let you get on with things but were there if you needed them and Imelda baked us a fantastic chocolate fudge cake 😋 such a nice touch, we would definitely stay here again and definitely recommend to anyone else 👍🏼 Thanks Terence and Imelda ❤️

Cards players weekend away
The cottage was in a very good location. It was clean and tidy but quite chilly. We were staying on a particularly cold weekend but it would have been nice to have a fire or some additional heating in the main living room.
The house and cottage accommodated us well but the kitchen is well equipped but quite small. We appreciate that the spiral staircase is part of the original building but found it a bit tricky and think that anyone with mobility problems needs warning about how steep it is.
The owners were very friendly and helpful and the cupcakes were a nice touch.
We enjoyed our visit to this area very much. Thank you.

Nice house
We were a family of 11 away for the weekend. The 5th bedroom is out of the house and down the street so this was a slight negative however the lounge room was fab for us all to be together.
We enjoyed the dining area however the stairs were very dangerous and we struggled getting up and down a few times (however there is a sign to say they can come and help you if needed).
Thankyou for the lovely cakes! And the lollys were lovely for the children.

Lovely stay together with our family
We really enjoyed our stay. Lots of accommodation - in various places but it all worked well. Able to host our extended family for an afternoon as well, Imelda was a wonderful hostess and blessed us with her incredible cupcakes.

Excellent accommodation in a great location
We were very satisfied with the property and all 9 of us had a most enjoyable family get together. The accommodation was clean and furnished to a good standard and we were impressed with the well equipped kitchen. We had good weather throughout our stay and were able to enjoy time outside in the patio garden. We appreciated the homemade chocolate cupcakes brought to us on the Saturday evening by the owner Terence’s wife....thank you!! It was good to have Cromford station nearby as some of our party arrived and departed by train. During our stay we visited Matlock Bath, Matlock, had a very nice meal in the local pub, and enjoyed the many rhododendrons in full bloom at nearby Lea Gardens. We would certainly consider a return visit to the property in the future.

Perfect for a family gathering
The property was perfect for a large family gathering. Plenty of sleeping areas, well appointed and spotlessly clean. The Old Mill sits in a picturesque village close to a number of local attractions

Characterful, welcoming, lovely views and very good value for money.
We were welcomed with a large tin of chocolates instead of their usual home-baked cake, as my wife has a gluten allergy. (I don't think our grand-daughters had any objection to this arrangement!) And the shop/cafe/post office a few yards up the road even had some gluten-free items available; though as weekend visitors we weren't there long enough to try them.
The main house was full of character. It has a spacious lounge and feature fireplace. A spiral staircase (not recommended for disabled access!) goes down from the hall to the dining room, kitchen and lower bedrooms. There is a ground-floor bathroom and twin bedroom and a very nice double bedroom in the tower (but mind your head going down if over 6ft.). The owners live in an adjoining section of the building and the main courtyard has parking for 3 visitor's cars. A self-contained cottage next door has a double bedroom and double bed-settee. There was a good supply of utensils and accessories and loads of toys, books and games for both kids and adults. We did find a few faulty items, such as a stuck tap, that appeared not to have been reported by previous occupants. The owners thanked us, ordered a plumber, and gave us a £10 discount.
The location is very convenient for back-road access to Matlock Bath and many other attractions, without having to fight your way through the traffic in Matlock town centre.
We have already recommended it to other friends and family.

Well appointed house in a great location
The house was well appointed and spacious, with a very large lounge that groups of up to 15 can comfortably sit around. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. The location is lovely - a mile away from a nice pub, a mile away from a river, and not all that far from small towns and the Derbyshire Peaks.
The only small thing to be aware of is a very steep set of stairs down to the kitchen and dining area. This is fine for most but I'd be cautious before letting someone who is a bit more frail to walk up and down. That said, as long as they are sleeping upstairs you could manage without them using the steeper stairs.

Generous, Convenient and Well Equipped
We hired the Old Mill and Cottage for a family holiday to celebrate an Anniversary. Our party totalled 6 adults and two children.
We were all very pleased with our choice of bedrooms and facilities and really impressed with the way in which the property was equipped and supplied. Although we needed to bring Bath and Hand towels this wasn't really a problem.
The spiral stairs down to the Dining Room and Kitchen take a little practice but we were soon quite proficient.
The comfortable and roomy lounge was perfect for getting together. Our granddaughter (age 7) was delighted to find a brilliant dolls house and toys, whilst the adults had a range of books and games as well as a full Sky TV service.
Lots of fridge and freezer space together with the oven, microwave and dishwasher made it easy to do our bit of self catering whilst a huge array of crockery, cutlery and glasses meant we rarely ran short of implements
The owners are just lovely. Very obliging and willing to help. We were fortunate to enjoy a Cheesecake ready in the fridge when we arrived and some home-baked chocolate muffins later in the week.
In the village, the local store.post office was handy and the Jug & Glass Inn do a really excellent meal.

Very enjoyable holiday
We really enjoyed our stay here. Plenty of room for the ten of us, well equipped kitchen, toys, books and games. Spiral staircase took a bit of getting used to but added to the fun! Owners very friendly and helpful.

Gorgeous, quirky and perfect
We were a Hen party and it was perfect. It was lovely that the Bride-to-be was able to stay in the "tower" with a gorgeous view. The owners were very welcoming and looked after us very well. The spiral staircase was a gorgeous feature and a really nice addtion to the property. I would highly recommend it.

Nice quirky property clean, and well kept
Ideally based for the Peak District. Total change from normal cottages in a good way. Thoroughly recommend to anyone visiting the area. Received a gorgeous chocolate cake form the owner during stay. Recommend the Jug and Glass for a meal and drinks and visits to Chatsworth House, Heights of Abraham, Tram Museum and Buxton all within easy reach of this property. Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Wood.

Alton Towers & Matlock Bath Trip Visit
Cannot fault the hospitality from the Owners, property was clean and well maintained, home baked chocolate cake arrived Saturday night which was lovely with a cup of tea. Spiral staircases is a challenge but its part of the character and you get used to it! Owners have thoughtfully put tea making facilities and fridges on the top level and the bottom so no need to carry hot drinks about. Nice little touches like bubble bath/shower gel/dish washer tablets/salt and pepper make this a real change from other rental places. To finish off my Son left his teddy in one of the bunk beds, Mr Wood packaged this up and was back with us at home very quickly and will not accept the postage paid, I would recommend this place and will be back again ourselves.

A Wonderful Birthday Treat
It was a surprise treat for my husband's 80th birthday which we shared with several friends and family. We were quite daunted on seeing the spiral staircase to the lower floor where there were two bedrooms, kitchen and dining room, but we soon got used to it although getting the luggage and provisions down was quite an adventure. If we come again, we shall bring a long rope to use as a pulley system. It was quite dangerous for young children.
Despite that, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to friends. We were made very welcome and the halloween cake brought to us on Saturday evening was delicious surprise and very welcome. Thank You.
