Great location, we really enjoyed the little explanations around the house on the history or the meaning of everything. The host was so lovely and made us feel at home immediately. Very welcoming and warm. We would highly recommend staying at Sofuan.
Everything was great, we have nothing bad to say.

Beautifully presented original style Machiya House. We loved sitting by the garden and also using the amazing traditional cast iron bath.

Host was extremely accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble.
House was very well maintained and well equipped. Everything was spotlessly clean. Clear signage in Japanese and English as to how everything worked. Lots of interesting details in the house explaining its history.
We stayed in 3 different Japanese traditional houses while on vacation. Toyko, Kyoto and this house in Kanawaza. This house was by far the best!

An old traditional Japanese house, but renovated. It is very comfy and relax home. The host is super thoughtful. Let us realised not only the history of the traditional house but also the Japanese spirit.

Our host Kazuyo-san made us feel like family; her warm welcome was a highlight of our time in Japan. The house was enchanting--an authentic hundred-year-old structure appointed with every imaginable convenience. Local sweets greeted us daily. We enjoyed the beautiful interior garden view, the inviting shamisen guitar, and the marvelous Japanese soaking tub.

Beautiful house with very peaceful feel in an amazing location. Felt transported back in time. Story of property told in notes placed around the house. The bath overlooking the garden is an experience not to be missed especially in a rainy day. Very friendly host - Thank you Kazuyo!

Great communication & coordination for a super easy check-in. Served tea and cookies and told us about events, activities, and restaurants in the area. Beautiful home that offered an authentic experience, bath and garden were lovely.

Above and beyond expectations. Comfortable, beautiful and cozy. Located about 15 minutes walk from the train station, and less than 5 minutes from the amazing park. The house is amazing with little charming surprises around every corner. The kitchen and rooms are spacious and the iron cast bath is unbelievable. The host made us feel at home. Wish we could have spent a few more nights there
The house is old so some floor boards creak and in the cold nights we needed to turn on the heating. Not necessarily an issue, I didn't mind any of it but just so you know in case it might be an issue for you. For me it was part of the charm of the place

Beautiful machiya house with great facility, very clean, quiet and comfortable. Location is amazing, 3 minutes walk to Kanazawa castle park and Omicho market. Around 1 km to Kenrokuen garden and Higashi Chaya district. Mrs. Kazuyo Fujita is a wonderful host. She welcome us with matcha and sweets which is a very nice gesture.
Only 1 key is quite inconvenience for us. Everybody must leave the house and come back together. Suggest to provide at least 2 keys.

The host met us at the door in a traditional kimono, showed us around the property, told stories of growing up in a similar old home and then conducted a formal tea ceremony (additional cost). FANTASTIC. The aesthetic of the rooms and garden are spare and calming while the bathing area redefined what are must-have features (Japanese tubs are wonderful). We traveled in the middle of winter so experienced the property as locals would have ‘back-in-the-day’. Very little insulation so the rooms were cold. The owners manage this with room heaters in all of the rooms, a thick down comforter, hot water bottles and a fabulous under the table heating feature.

The owner is delightful. She was in great contact and promptly answered any questions we had. She met us to let us drop off our bags and then again later to walk us the the house, indulge us with tea and treats and to give us the keys. The house is just a few minutes from the fish market and walking distance to everything! The house is beautifully restored and very cozy!!!!

Really beautiful building and lovely welcome including tea. The bath is amazing too.
Most chairs were stools which was sore on my back (a very minor issue though!)

What a wonderful experience. If you want a glimpse into more traditional Japanese living without having to be afraid you won't understand any custom, this is a great way to get an immersion with Westerner friendly approach. The host is very patient and speaks English. She welcomes you to her home like at a Ryokan. But you have the house all to yourself after a welcome tea and sweets. There are Western style beds and typical amenities available. The thing that makes this house so special though is that you feel you enter history with and a boutique hotel. The Zen garden is beautiful, the modern JP bathroom kitchen as well as decor wants to keep tradition up while bringing it into the 21st century. Very respectful approach to all craftsmanship.
The host also has several good restaurant/cafe/bar recommendations available. Very helpful in general. And she is the only host that has sent a follow-up message after I left. Such a nice gesture - as it should look like.
Additionally, the location is perfect. Right in the middle of the action/history. Everything is in walking distance.
the weather. ;)

I have to say, this place is luxurious.
Old fashioned, antique even but deluxe.
Kazuyo-san is a wonderful host.

The perfect choice for a confortable and quiet stay in Kanazawa. A very beautiful old japanese wooden house, also confortable and well equipped, in a very convenient location, close to the main sites to visit in Kanazawa. And, last but not least, a very warm and efficient welcome and service by the owner ! We spent 6 wonderful days and would be glad to come again.

Perfectly located, traditional Japanese house with friendly host for whom nothing was to much of a fuss.
Would highly recommend.

The property is the most quaint property we’ve ever stayed in. A traditional old house ( machiya) lovingly restored with modern amenities. The bath is a sight to behold- a large iron tub that is wonderful after a day of exploring Kanazawa. Nestled in a quiet neighbourhood between Omicho Markets and Kanazawa Castle, and an easy walk to the Higashi Chaya ( old town) district.
The hostess was absolutely wonderful- greeted us and made us matcha with sweets.
Could not recommend Soufuan any more highly!

Our hostess was the best part of our visit. So friendly and helpful. Introduced us to the history of the property and Kanazawa. The property itself was also very special. A great experience to stay in traditional housing - 90 years old!
