About this cottage rental
Pedro Herrera Casita, Est. 1857
The premier historic rental property in Tubac, this charming territorial-style adobe casita, built in 1857, was home to the village’s first postmaster, Pedro Herrera. Unfortunately, Pedro and the rest of the residents were forced to flee the town for Tucson in 1861, due to repeated raids by Cochise's Apaches out of the nearby Santa Rita Mountains. The first postmaster never returned to Tubac. Today, the Pedro Herrera Casita has been lovingly restored and updated by the current owner, an internationally known novelist. It offers a comfortable, romantic retreat with all the modern conveniences, including central heat/air conditioning, and evaporative cooler, Roku streaming service, and wireless internet connection. A complimentary signed copy of one the owner's novels is offered to renters upon check-in.
Set on a terraced and beautifully landscaped half-acre lot, shared by the owner’s residence, the casita is shaded by old-growth deciduous and fruit trees and is only minutes from the Santa Cruz river and the Anza Trail, offering wonderful walking, hiking, biking, and birding through magnificent old-growth cottonwood and mesquite forests. Less a desert landscape than it is a riparian one, the area is a favorite vacation destination for birders who come to see the incredible diversity and fecundity of both resident and migratory species.
The 750-sq. foot casita is furnished in Colonial-style antique furniture, and includes one bedroom/one bath; a queen sleeper sofa; fully-equipped kitchen; separate laundry room with washer/dryer and utility sink; brick patio with gas grill and umbrella-shaded dining table. Although only steps from Tubac’s lively shopping streets, the Pedro Herrera Casita is its own private enclave, offering our guests tranquility and serenity in an Old World atmosphere.

We loved our time at the casita in Tubac - everything was very clean and well laid out for a comfortable, relaxing vacation. The host was kind and met us promptly when we arrived, and we couldn't imagine staying anywhere else in Tubac.

Great little historical casita in a wonderful location in Tubac. It had everything you would need and beautiful little oasis in the back to sit and enjoy some fresh air. The decor was cute as well and everything was very clean.
Thank you.

If you enjoy staying at historic properties and are planning a trip to Tubac, I would highly recommend this property. The home is within walking distance to Tubac which is a plus. We loved everything about the property and Jim, the host, has thought of everything visitors might need for their stay. We enjoyed sitting on the covered front porch and the lovely side porch. And the inside of the home is comfortable and artistically decorated. The kitchen has absolutely everything you need, so on our next visit, we plan to cook more meals there. There is a water filtration system, so that was a big plus too. Although we didn’t use it, there is a lovely back patio with a grill for cooking outside too. The home has a washer and a dryer, something else that is a plus. The bed was comfortable and there were wardrobes and a dresser for clothes if you are staying longer (which we absolutely plan to do next time). There is air conditioning, but we only used the swamp cooler since it kept the home very comfortable. TV streaming had lots of choices and the sofa, desk, dining table and reading chair in the main room was very comfortable and functional. Jim, the host, is an author and enjoys making sure his guests have a wonderful experience! He made my husband’s birthday memorable and enjoyable. This was our best VRBO property yet and we are looking forward to staying again in the near future!

Great Casita
This is a very old property, yet Jim has done a great job of updating it without taking away from its old beauty. It was a very comfortable pleasant stay. A very quiet area with much beauty surrounding the house. It is right in the center of the art district and yet seems so far away from things. Loved the time I spent there. I will be back.

Absolute perfection!
My husband and I stayed at Jim’s charming casita with the expectation of taking long day trips to explore southern AZ. However, we found ourselves not wanting to leave the warmth and comforts of this little gem. We explored the shops and restaurants of Tubac (Soto’s Outpost is our favorite – you must try the chicken mole enchiladas!) then would look at each other and decide to just go back and relax at the most wonderful home away from home we could ever hope to find.
Jim is a fantastic host – from the clear instructions prior to arrival to his personal tour of the casita and lush gardens that embrace the home. We felt like family. You will find all you need at the casita, and if there is something you don’t find, Jim will bring it to you. The bed is like crawling into a cloud, the linens soft, the bathroom spotless, and the living room a perfect place to end the night.
Staying in this historic casita with its lovely outdoor space has us feeling as if we stepped back in time into an authentic little home in Mexico.
We are home now in cold Colorado and wish we were back in the warm embrace of Jim's casita!

Stay in paradise
We've stayed in Tubac several times but this historic casita is the most peaceful & relaxing of all. Jim is an excellent host and provides all the amenities you would need. We've booked our second stay for the end of 2021 and plan to make other reservations in 2022.

Anniversary rental
We recently celebrated our 50th anniversary at this casita. We wanted to do something different this year and this seemed intriguing and relaxing. It didn't disappoint. The outdoor area is absolutely beautiful; perfect also for our dog. She had so much fun running and exploring. Tubac has so many fun shops and restaurants that it takes 3 days to check them out.
The casita is very comfortable with all the historical touches. Loved the old gates in the adobe wall.
We left feeling refreshed and hoping to return some spring when the foliage would be even more beautiful.
It was only when we were leaving that I discovered Jim was the author of a book I read last month. What a pleasant surprise!
We highly recommend this rental .

We were delighted with our stay at this historic and charming Pedro Herrera Casita in Tubac. Amy was a great host and made everything perfect for our stay. Kitchen has all you need to cook or enjoy local takeout meals. The back patio was so relaxing and quiet for morning coffee and the songs of the many birds in the area. An Arizona Cardinal would arrive each morning atop a pole to sing his song greeting a new day in the morning. We look forward to our next stay at this quaint property. Thank you Jim and Amy, Bruce Peterson

Great place! Right in town.
Very rustic with a lot of character. Just some water on the floor Wednesday. Amy came over to check it out. No water this morning.

We loved this high desert hideaway located right in the center of the Tubac historic district. A perfect place to unwind, relax and enjoy the walkability of the town and surrounding trails. Jim was a fantastic host and made us feel right at home.

CASITA PERFECTA!
Our week here was wonderful!
The casita is accurately described and photos current. If anything, the casita and property are understated! Artistic touches, quality cookware, sharp cutlery, reverse osmosis drinking water, and Boll and Branch organic sheets and towels! The bed is like sleeping on a cloud 😀.
There is a lovely rear patio and side patio, each with seating and tables. Fruit trees and flowers surround the property. If you enjoy birds you will be greeted by many Lucy's Warblers and Broad Billed Hummingbirds within 8 feet of your eyes from the chairs on the front porch.
Our host, Jim, was friendly, pleasant, attentive, and all around professional in providing a top notch stay.
We wanted to take his little dog Paulette home with us!
We really could not have wanted to change anything. Thank you Jim for ALL of the extras that you gave us!

The best place in Tubac
The Casita is charming and thoughtfully provisioned in every detail. It is close to shops and the Anza Trail and really might be the sweetest spot in Tubac—redolent of history and place. You really feel you have been somewhere that still has style and soul. Can’t recommend highly enough for those not requiring a pool or golf.

A little slice of heaven!
A magical property and a wonderful host. I thought ‘must return here’ the day I arrived. Lucky me, I live up the road in Tucson, so I can. Gorgeous walking paths abound nearby. Tubac has a lot to offer itself. Fabulous getaway!

A 2 week vacation
Perfect place for our vacation where we could also bring our dogs! We brought 3. Nice, large totally fenced in yard. Owner has 4 dogs and they all became friends. However, if you don’t have dogs they are well behaved and wouldn’t bother you. The little casita is full of primitive antiques and has a casual and comfortable vibe but also all the modern comforts you would want. Right around the corner from many shop and galleries, and also hiking and birding. The host was very accommodating and friendly. We would definitely go again!

Tubac Casita
My husband and I booked this property for a long weekend and enjoyed it very much. We loved the historic feel with the antique wardrobes, cupboards and chests, but modern where it needed to be - very comfortable bed, purified drinking water system, WIFI and good, hot shower and a TV, of course. Jim was a friendly and informative host - took the time to show us the casita as well as the surrounding property and gave us some good suggestions for things to do in Tubac. We were able to take our dog with us, which was a big plus. Would definitely recommend this property!!
